Why Niggas With Advanced Degrees Hate It When People Lie About Having Them, Explained

So, I have to say. Although most of the criticisms about Dr. Umar Johnson seem to be valid, the one that makes me feel a certain way is how hard some of you degreed niggas are going in on his supposed lack of a doctorate. It seems elitist and classist; as if only a Black person with those credentials is allowed a platform.

Hmm. I can actually see how it might seem that way, as geographically incorrect Africa medallion soaked in Thunderbird with sentience “Dr.” Umar Johnson’s claim that he forgot to renew his PhD paperwork was met with unparalleled glee and mirth. Niggas had more fun with that than we do at Six Flags.

But that’s more about the fact that it exposed his particular convergence of falsehoods than any sort of classism and anti-Blackness.

Eh. Maybe your claims would be more valid if it weren’t true that these same jokes at Johnson’s expense were made from your iPhones and Macbooks (created by college dropout Steve Jobs) and published on Facebook (created by college dropout Mark Zuckerberg). I guess its only cool when White dudes don’t have the degrees.

You’re still missing the point. It’s not about whether Johnson has one. There are tons of laudable and respect-worthy niggas sans degrees. Jesus, for instance, didn’t even have a GED. And it’s not like degrees are some automatic dispenser of wisdom. It issue is that he lied — and still continues to lie — about having a PhD. And that the lie was conceived out of the same bucket of swirling and swindling fuckshit that his mythical connection to Frederick Douglass and his claims that he’s the world’s most requested scholar were born out of. His life is a microwave-friendly tray of lie manicotti, and the false degrees are just the cheese.

This makes sense, but it still doesn’t explain why some of y’all are going so hard on that.

Well, Black people who did manage to earn an advanced degree know that shit wasn’t easy. They remember the years devoted to school; the countless hours studying and editing and experimenting and writing and submitting. They remember the myriad roadblocks in their way. The schools in the middle of fucking nowhere they may have had to attend. The blatantly racist classmates. The blatantly racist faculty and advisers they may have had to prove themselves to. The rejections of their theories and work; the doubts of their work ethics and intelligence; the relentless self-doubting and questioning if they should just quit school and get a “real job.” The student loans still chasing them around; attached to them like a fart stuck to a cheap blouse. The disrespectful post-degree job offers.

And so, after dealing with all of that, it’s not hard to see why they’d be especially harsh towards someone who rolls up like “Yup. I got one of them degrees too. We’re degree twinsies!

Also, its not just about degrees. Like, imagine if you were a fireman. And you went through the grueling mental and physical training necessary to be one. And you’re out there risking your life and shit to fight fires.

And then one weekend you go to a BBQ. And the fire on the grill gets too hot. And someone takes a bucket of water and splashes it on the grill. And then that person decides to get a fireman’s Halloween costume from Party City, and starts calling himself a fireman. Even starts going on panels with the costume to talk about fire. And then people on Facebook listen to his speeches, and start saying things like “This dude knows everything about fire! He’s a motherfuckin Fire Maven!” And then he starts calling himself The World’s Most Requested Fireman, and starts a GoFundme to finance his own fire station.

And then, as a response to a friend lauding his fire genius and fire bravery, you say, “Well, actually…he’s not really a fireman.” And then you get accused of being a fire coon by his followers.

You’d feel a certain way about that, right?

I guess so.

Exactly!

I see a title but wheres his dissertation

Even my Masters thesis is up online and can be downloaded (for a fee)

Why is he talking about “renewing” doctoral paperwork

Either he has the degree or he doesnt

        • Cool

The pdf not being available online doesn’t mean he didn’t receive the degree. Common sense. This whole slander article is based on the degree not the dissertation.

          • NomadaNare

When the entire rest of your class has their PDF available online and your name is not present in the graduation materials it implies he either never had a defense or failed it which would mean he probably is an ABD candidate

Source: I am a PhD candidate at a tier 1 research institution

                Love your handle.

            • NonyaB?

And when the school you claim either doesn’t exist or clarifies it never granted a PhD to you or you were never enrolled in that program or they don’t even offer that major, it means ya ain’t got it. That fraudulent fool has run on too long. I hope the IRS drops a nice audit on him – he needs to account for almost 1M in donations that he’s eaten over the years without buying any school or being a registered charity as he claimed.

              • sleep

None of what you said is true. His doctorate has been confirmed.

                • NonyaB?

*YAWN* All of what I said is true: The school itself did not confirm his earning a PhD, only that a Johnson attended but not listed as graduated. For whatever reason, the writer at The Roots checked with some “clearinghouse” as opposed to directly with the school. Until the school itself (including his PhD supervisors) confirms directly + produces his thesis (which is mysteriously unavailable despite all others from that school being online) + produces visual evidence that he is the same Johnson who went there and graduation video (which is mysteriously unavailable despite all others from that school being online), I don’t believe the liar.

AND It’s also not a lie that he scammed money – he’s failed to account for all the donations he’s collected, govt records show he didn’t buy any school building as claimed and never even registered any charity.

He’s still a liar, fraud and charlatan.

                  • sleep

Lol. Denial is one helluva drug. Now clearinghouse is lying for Dr Umar Johnson. Smh. They already showed pictures of Dr Umar Johnson as psyd student. Also Dr Umar Johnson never said he bought a school building. What are you talking about. You’re just making up stuff.

            • Cool

Well well well. It looks like your favorite non-black owned news site(theroot) has apologized to Dr. Umar Johnson for slandering his name and credentials. Will you be apologizing too?

‘It turns out that Umar Johnson is a doctor of psychology. The National Student Clearinghouse verified it for me late last night after researching his files. You can view the certificate here(link in artlcle)’

            • sleep

Welp, turns out he wasn’t lying after all. His doctorate has been verified..

              • NomadaNare

                I saw

                Hes still a fraud

                • sleep

That’s your opinion. And you don’t have a lot of credibility right now.

                  • NomadaNare

He collected three quarters of a million dollars for a school hes supposed to be building

He is not associated with a 501c3 and has not released a public account of his finances nor an account of what happened with the money nor build or renovation plans nor any indication that he even still has the money

He supposedly choose a site to build a while ago but AFAIK has made no plans to purchase this site

When he supplies any of those things he technically wont be a fraud but will still have to answer for the sheer amount of bs hes been spouting especially with a legitimate PsyD

Anyway good luck with your hotepery

                    • sleep

He doesn’t have to make a public account of the money. It’s none of your business if you didn’t donate. But for those who did, he gives updates every two months via email. And he never chose a site to build the school, he said he was looking at a couple of different sites. If you don’t like his ideology, say that. But don’t make up ish just because you don’t like his views

Anyway good luck with your feminazism

          • orchid921

HahahahahahaNO. Any registrar’s office at any college in the country can verify this with a phone call or e-mail. There’s even a national clearinghouse for this. Nice try, though.

          • “The pdf not being available online doesn’t mean he didn’t receive the degree.”

Find it for us to settle the argument then, bruh. It shouldn’t be that hard.

“This whole slander article is based on the degree not the dissertation.”

And how much money did you donate to him for the Frederick Douglass Marcus Garvey Leadership Academy for Black Boys?

Sweet on all levels. My job has tuition reimbursement up to 12500 annually so that’s how I paid as well. Not a penny out of pocket.

                    • SororSalsa

That is such a blessing. I got my tuition paid for my MBA, and the best part was that I didn’t even have to come out of pocket. My company gave me a letter to take to the school, and when I registered each semester, they would bill my employer so I never had to pay. The only thing I had to pay for was books, and I got $500/year for that.

I heard this… and I wondered if maybe someone got it confused and he actually meant he has to renew his psychologist certification? Those do expire.

            • SororSalsa

Umm, if he’s that confused, does he even understand how this thing actually works? If he had the degree, wouldn’t he know that it’s the cert that has to be renewed, not the degree itself?

              • sleep

That’s what he said. He never said he he had to renew his degree.

Have you read the dissertation or nah? Because damn it, it’s not on here.

        • miss t-lee

          I mean…I’m glad someone said it…

        • Cool

What does that have to do with if he has the degree or not?

          • You want to use the title doctor, then you better either have had gone to med school or finished your Ph.D.

            • Cool

Or you can have a Doctorate of Psychology (PsyD)

              • Junegirl627

                or be a vet

              • Love Heals

Which he presumably doesn’t have either since that doesn’t get “renewed” either. I feel very comfortable saying this fraud doesn’t have even a passing acquaintance with what the dissertation proposal requires, much less the arduous actual work (research, etc) and ultimately the defense. Full disclosure: I intend to get a PhD in Psychology. However, having seen many others getting doctorates in myriad fields, I’m somewhat daunted. Okay, total honesty: I’m shook. And I feel vicarious offense at such blatant lies and disrespect. (Remember, he simultaneously claims to have the aforementioned degrees, while maintaining they have no value/merit.)

                • DocMaldo

Please don’t be shook. I have mine in education and I have friends who have theirs in a variety of disciplines, including psychology. It took me 5 years (got married and had a baby halfway through), but it was slow and steady progress. And that’s the way that most of my peeps got through…slow and steady progress. If you are good at project management (or running marathons) you should be fine. ;-)

                  • Love Heals

Aww, thanks. Just reading this. Congrats on the marriage and baby!!! I really appreciate the encouragement and I’ll keep slow and steady in mind. Regarding marathons and running, in general…lol. I got myself vibram 5 finger shoes-in the wrong size, then kept promising to do it. Sigh. Thing is I often run instead of walk when outside regardless of shoe type. Just nervous. Smh.

              • RaeRae

He doesn’t have that either. He did not successfully defend the dissertation. He can refer to himself as Doctor Whoever all he wants, but he cannot be offended when people call him on it.

                • sleep

Actually his doctorate has been verified. So…

            • Furious Styles

Or change your name to “Doctor”.

          • MakesMeWannaShoopShoopShoop

Universities have a habit of making available all successfully defended PhDs.

            • sleep

              You were wrong. lol

          • Furious Styles

            1) if he lies about that, then what else is he lying about? Answer: a lot.
            2) “leaders who dont need no degrees” don’t have to lie about having them.

Scratch a lie, find a thief.

            • sleep

Turns out he wasn’t lying though. Lol

      • Junegirl627

No he doesn’t he admitted it at his town hall and the root investigated the claim as well.
        http://www.theroot.com/we-fact-checked-umar-johnsons-hotep-tantrum-with-roland-1796798532

        • 44isnojoke

I might have missed it….but did you actually go to his meeting?

        • sleep

Stop lying. His doctorate has been verified.

          • Junegirl627

I’m not lying. I got receipts

            • sleep

Then why did the root apologize and admit he has a doctorate? Tell the truth. You never heard him say he doesn’t have a doctorate did you?

              • Junegirl627

Yes I did hear him say that. But since you are so doubtful. of me and my word why don’t you ask yourself this. Of all the completely ridiculous stuff I have told you he said. The disrespecting Black women, thedemand for $50 with no guarantee that he will even give you the infomation you are paying for etc. etc. etc. Why is the only thing you are challenging me about is his education. the least relevant part of this whole batchof Umar Johnson fuckshit schmorgesborg

                • sleep

His doctorate wasn’t irrelevant when your people were writing articles about him not having one. I didn’t see you in the comment section saying whether or not he has a doctorate is irrelevant then. It’s only irrelevant now because you and your people were wrong. But to answer your question, I don’t know of him disrespecting Black women, nor do I know of him asking people for 50 dollars. Do you have proof of this, or is it just something you heard other people who don’t like him say?

                  • Junegirl627

I have proof of everything including him saying he will go back to school one day and finish his paperwork to get everybody off his back.

And you’re right I wasn’t saying that it wasn’t relevant before. I do think he uses his title of “Doctor” to give his bone headed idea some legitimacy. I do think he uses the title to intimidate the less learned people. That doesn’t change. My opinion doesn’t change. He’s still a smoke and mirror charlatan.

                    • sleep

What’s the name of the video where he said, he will go back to school to finish his paperwork? I don’t believe you, because it makes no sense. It’s been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that he has a doctorate. So why would he lie and say he doesn’t? That makes no sense.

                    • Junegirl627

Why would I lie? He lies so people give up that $50. I’m not getting nothing. I went and he said that he ain’t finish because he didnt want to work for white people. He never made sense. He is a fraud.

                    • sleep

You have a reason to lie, because you don’t like him. It makes no sense for him to lie for years about having a doctorate, then suddenly say he doesn’t after its already proven that he does.

                    • Junegirl627

Wtf!!! Were you there? No you flicking weren’t. But I was. I know it helps you sleep at night to think that this is some conspiracy to get you to stop believing in Umar. Some group ina secret conference room put me out here to tell you lies so you won’t Listen to Umarsbeasy to understand answer. But that just not the case. He doesn’t have all the answers and you are just as lost disoriented and flucked up with no compass just as the rest of us trying to find our way.

Now I’m trying to be nice to you. But you’re starting to make it hard. So I am going to say this one last time. I am not lying. He said that he didn’t finish his degree because he didn’t want to work for white people.

Now go to sleep Sleep! Let it go. Move on and pray that one day you get to diddle his balls for all I care but leave me alone

                    • sleep

Okay, fine. But you know they’re going to put the video out in a couple of days on Alkebulan Mind youtube channel? I’m not trying to call you a liar. But can’t you understand why it sounds crazy for someone who claimed they had a doctorate for years to suddenly say he doesn’t? Then a couple of days later his doctorate degree is released. That just doesn’t make sense to me. But we’ll see in a couple of days.

                    • Junegirl627

Alkebulan Mind?! You not trying to call me a liar? Yo your meds are wearing off. You care too much.

                    • sleep

I don’t think you’re lying anymore. I think you misunderstood what he said. Just like when people thought he said he had to renew his phd, when he really sad he didn’t renew his license to practice psychology. But we’ll see when Alkebulan Mind releases the video.

                    • Junegirl627

smh, think whatever helps you sleep at night.

                    • sleep

Alkebulan Mind is the name of a youtube channel btw. And they were filming at the lecture you’re talking about.

                • sleep

Why would he say he doesn’t have a doctorate when it’s been proven that he does. Keep it real, you know you never heard him say that nonsense. You’re just repeating what you heard from other people. Either that or you’re blatantly lying.

                  • Junegirl627

So once again the fact that he thinks that black mothers can’t properly raise their own children and he promises to create a school with only black men as teachers (even though that’s illegal because discrimination) does matter you want to discuss him saying he don’t have a degree.

                    You sad shitgibbit

                    • sleep

He never said Black mothers can’t properly raise their children. He said Black kids need both their mother and father. This is empirically true. Black people raised by single parents do worst than Black people raised by both parents in terms of economics, education, and incarceration. And he never said only Black men could work at the school. He said only Black people, men and women. And he did say, that’s going to be hard to do, because it’s illegal to discriminate based n race.

                    • Junegirl627

This was addressed today at the Root. They did a very good article. I highly recommend it: http://www.theroot.com/we-fact-checked-umar-johnsons-hotep-tantrum-with-roland-1796798532

I thought for a second there you were stanning for the brotha and I was just gonna log off and say it’s one of them days. Liquor. But you came back at the end.

Yea. If I ran that 25 miles only to be greeted by you at the end talking about how hard it was and you drove there. We gonna have a problem.

“Black people who did manage to earn an advanced degree know that shít wasn’t easy. The disrespectful post-degree job offers.”

    This.
    Whole.
    Thing.
    Right.
    Here.

Especially at a PWI. I was supposed to be a deadbeat dad with 10 babymommas working at a car wash right now.

    • Kat

Reminds me of when I was in the military and these two white guys in my unit…who I had been working with for at least a year, asked if I had kids. I said yea, two. My momma raising them. Cause you know…all of us black gals have kids and ish.

i strung them along for another month or two, talking about my imaginary kids and the struggles I was having with raising them long distance and they daddies (plural).

Another coworker overheard and laughed long and hard. That ended the ruse. It was fun though..stereotyping and ish.

      • JamieBell

Because my son and daughter are a mixture of four races, and look noticeably different to each other, I was asked outright if they had the same father. And as a young mother, on more than one occasion I was admonished by STRANGERS for having a baby, even though I was married.

Because all black women have more than one baby daddy, of course, and we all have those children without benefit of a committed partner.

I lost my mind. No one would think of asking a white woman if her blonde and brunette kids have the same dad.

        • Kat

Exactly. Assumptions based on skin color. They actually got mad at me for playing the stereotype game with them. My first question back was why did you assume I had kids? When you can answer that openly and honestly…we can talk.

          • Floridallewis

But you clearly stated that they asked you if you had kids. Asking and assuming are two entirely different things. Just because they asked you clearly doesn’t mean they assumed you had kids.

            • Kat

We worked together for over a year. Ten hours working the meteorological counter. 12hr shifts on several field problems. Never once did I mention kids. Having or wanting. One had kids. The other didn’t. I knew because they both spoke on it. Showed pics. Shared stories. So yea. No.

              • Baken Greese

Just because you didn’t mention not wanting or having kids still doesn’t mean they knew if you had kids or not…I’m not trying to be rude or insensitive about it, but that situation didn’t come across as them stereotyping you.

        • Question

This happens to me and both my kids have the same mother and father. Its just that both of my kids were born light (I’m Taraji Henson’s color, my husband is like Mahershala Ali’s color but has green eyes) but slowly got darker over ~18 months. Ya know – the dark ears thing…

Its amazing to see white people trip over themselves finding “nice ways” to ask if my husband is Black or if they have the same parents.

          “What are you kids?” Girls.
“No I mean what’s their background?” Black.
          “Oh…Black…???”. Black.

          • JamieBell

In the Caribbean, because of all the mixtures of races, we are very used to the “What are you?” question, and it’s not considered rude – it’s like asking what someone does or where they grew up. My kids have an African-Amerindian mother and an African-European-Indian father, so people always ask, just like they would ask a Chinese-European or a Lebanese-Indian what they are. We don’t mind it here.

But thinking that my having brown or black skin means you have the right to make assumptions and judge me on your assumptions (I could be an unmarried 23 year old with 4 baby daddies, it’s no-one’s damn business)…no, you looking for it from me.

            • Ms.Moon

Genetics are weird. There is a saying a black woman can make any race of child and it’s kind of true because many black people from this part of the world are just racially mixed. I remember seeing Finding Our Roots with Gates Jr. and Mae Jemison said her interpreter in Korea told her she reminded her of his auntie and it turned out she had Asian DNA. Many a time we don’t know who we are because Africans were deliberately separated during the slave trade and during slavery no matter where we were there were white men that took advantage of that situation and then there is the general messy tea that is life.

          • Aye Bee

My god children’s father responds to the question of “what are they mixed with” in reference to his children is “African American and Black” people’s faces are hilarious bc at first they seem perplexed then realize he was being sarcastic.lol

      • MsCee

I love you Kat. This hit me right in the tickles. Reminds me of the time my professor asked me if both my kids have the same father. I responded “do yours?” And somehow ended up in a meeting with the department head. Mind you I have ONE child.

        • miss t-lee

It’s only fair you asked that question.

        • MissRosé

          *BLINK*

        • Love Heals

WOW. The effrontery to friggin’ ask that.

        • Kat

When I tell you I had serious fun. Had done named them youngins, personalities and everything. I was sharing stories of their day. They even asked why I had never mentioned my kids before then. I looked all sad and embarrassed and told a story of being a poor black gal from a broken home.

And I’m just baffled as to how you ended up in the department heads office. What happened as a result? I mean you asked them the same question they asked you. No snark.

          • MsCee

I had just given birth to my daughter and still retained my academic scholarship, yet they tried to say they felt I “needed a break” from school to get “refocused.” Needless to say that attempt failed. The President of my college and his wife were my mentors. It was nothing to reach out to my friends in high places.

        • grownandsexy2

Pisses me off. What made him think you had 2 kids? He could ask you a question but when you turn it back on him there’s a problem? Who did he think he was anyway?

        • Janelle Doe

Man. If I get a meeting; professor gets a meeting
*in Oprah everyone gets a free car voice :-)

      • Effrom Robinson

You are my hero, I wonder if I should talk about all the kids I have and how I don’t pay child support. I was working on a PhD, you know I couldn’t pay for all those kids!

        • Kat

Do it! I had the most fun not drunk in months during that time..lol I was tired of being the only anyway.

I remember going to a meeting once on base and walking in and seeing more than four black people present. I said out loud… “Is we having a NAACP meeting and no one told me?” They didn’t laugh. I did. For about two minutes. Giggled silently for another ten.

Another time (and I swear this the last story) I complained about an anti-drug pamphlet that only had the darker hued people/hands holding or using drugs. I’m like…so no one previewed this ish before sending out to the entire Air Force. That got me up the chain of command.

        • grownandsexy2

Do it and report back. lol

      • Brittany Sherrelle Roberts

This man is a charlatan, plain and simple. There’s nothing elitist about calling him out for claiming a title that he did not earn but ur um the little joke you played is positively dripping with elitism. I get that your intentions were to teach your colleague a lesson about treating black ppl as a monolith but you went about it the wrong way

My mother clawed her way out of a cycle of poverty and abuse, the likes of which few could scarcely imagine, with her three kids from two baby daddies as her sole motivation.

Neither she or my ex heroine addicted father graduated high school and never even got their GEDs yet each have worked along side people with degrees. Because you don’t escape the belly of the beast w/o knowing how to game the system Had my mother gotten wind of your little game it would have been like a knife to her gut.

She is already tormented by the emotional scars of her past. Of her religious fanatic mother who beat her so badly that her and her siblings used to pray for death. Of her drunken father who is the literal embodiment of the temptation papa was a rolling stone right down to the multiple wives he abandoned and didn’t bother to divorce before marrying another as we the store front preaching

She told me of the time he passed out drunk and pissed himself at her school assembly. Some of her happier memories are of him pretending to beat her behind a closed door to save her from a true beating from my grand mother. Every time she hears the song Mrs Jones she remembers the teacher who cleaned her wounds with tears in her eyes. Again these are the happy memories.

And she got it easier than her older sisters my grandmother had as 13 yr old mother who ran away from an equally abusive aunt after she was orphaned. My grandmother had to leave her younger siblings and promised to come back only for them to move away that so tha she didn’t see for the next 20 yrs.

My family encompasses every freakin negative stereotype there is about black people; drug addicts, drug dealers, 6th grade drop outs selling dope to their i family. My grandmother mother spent her whole life on public aid. My mother spent 14 years on it. Two of my cousins have scars on their face from when their father cut them for trying to stop them beating their mother. Well just one now b/c one was murdered.

One of my cousins died as an infant and the other was taken by the state. Did I mention the older brother of the dead baby was a child of aunt slit her wrist over that. She didn’t dye though. She just went to jail.

Honey this ish is just the tip of the iceberg. So had my mother heard about your joke she would have been gunning for you. She would have had that employee habd book, which she weilds like a sword at every job, out and following you around with it til figured out which rule you broke so she could repor you to HR.

        • Brittany Sherrelle Roberts

BTW that would be the reaction of an evolved version of my mother. The one.married for 17 yrs to a sgt 1st class with a.nice house and a benz. The 21 yr old who spent weeks lying awake at night to keep the rats off her daughters would have found some girl to jump you. They’d never say a word so youy wouldn’t know why you were getting beat up so you couldn’t trace it back to her.

Make no mistake, I don’t approve of vsuch behavior but that’s just how it would have gone down. Your game would have opened those old wounds and reminded my mother how she used to get jumped only to come home and have her mother beat her again for fighting.

Hood chics be looking for a reason to siphon their pain onto another. Don’t give ’em a reason.

      • Tlholohelo Makatu

I work in a work environment where the race demographics are fragmented, you can’t say there’s more black people than white people or vice versa, but considering how corporate South Africa is (i.e. still dominated by hwites), our workplace is pretty diverse. When it comes out that I have a child, people are surprised to hear it but I’ve not had anybody flat out ask me if I have a child or how many. One time though, I was travelling with my son (he just turned 1) and I was at a kiosk at Charles de Gaulle airport, the vendor asked me if he’s my little brother. I thought ‘damn, do I look that young?’. That wasn’t the first I been asked that. But apparently I don’t look like I’m anyone’s parent…

      • Baken Greese

Maybe they asked if you had kids because you are a woman???

        • Kat

If that was the case, why not ask it a year prior? I don’t assume anyone has kids..cause I don’t have any.

          And asking because I’m a woman…oh. okay.

          • Baken Greese

I was only basing that off of your statement. You really didn’t go into detail about it, I didn’t see anything stereotypical about the question they asked. But unless you had some type of incident with them, I didn’t really see anything wrong with the question.

      • leo

Ha. Did this when I was in graduate school working as a server on the weekends for extra cash. Customers automatically asked about my kids? My thesis was my baby named Charlie. SMH, I rarely bothered to correct anyone/prove myself. Whatever to them all, I got extra tips + I graduated.

      • Hilary B.

…how did they assume if they asked? …maybe I’m reading this wrong.

That whole segment is my life from questioning my work ethic, to doubting my ideas (mind you, all my ideas were published and their crap failed or was rejected). Even with all that, even with 15 publications, I’m met with, “We don’t think you’re quite ready to be an independent researcher.” I can’t even… so yes, when Dr. Umar Frederick Douglass wig comes along, I’m salty.

      • Love Heals

So sorry to hear that. Please persevere. I firmly believe that sometimes gatekeepers work tirelessly to demoralize you because they are fully aware of how influential you could/would ultimately be. I wish you a satisfying triumph.

      • PinkRose

I’m hanging in there right with you, though I’m a couple years you from finishing my PhD.

    • Junebug Spade

YES. My thoughts exactly. I’m one of those brothas who had to leave the comforts of the I-95 Mid-Atlantic corridor to go to hell-frozen-over in the Rust Belt to earn his advanced degree. Most of the white people on the faculty and staff and most of my classmates were cool, but there was this one really condescending white administrator who took potshots, like “Well, it’s probably a great time to be here, what with affirmative action and all and you being a minority.” I was like WTF?!? Then I had a certain white female classmate who wasn’t even a generation removed from being white trash ask me during a break from a “Marriage and Family” seminar class if black women had more kids out of wedlock because they were just “more loose.” But yeah…everything the writer above said, YES!

I’m sorry I just disagree. Granted, I just graduated and I’m about to start grad school next month, but I just don’t see myself as caring that much. Maybe y’all just care more than I do (generally and about this), but I couldn’t care less if someone is running around saying they have an advanced degree or a degree period when they actually don’t. I don’t get why y’all are so bothered. It’s really not that deep.

Truth. Everything is not equivalent just because some people want the status, don’t want to do the work and don’t really know what it is.
