Well, On The Bright Side, At Least “No Frauds” Is Proof That Nicki Minaj DOES Write Her Own Rhymes

Despite the claims of Remy Ma and many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many others, I’ve never subscribed to the belief that Nicki Minaj employs and relies on a cadre of ghostwriters to prop her up. Mainly because it’s a claim that always seems to resurface whenever there’s a popular female rapper who also makes no effort to hide her sex appeal. (See, Kim, Lil, Brown, Foxy, Trina, and even — gasp — Becky, Darth.) As if a woman can’t be sexy and spit at the same time. And “No Frauds” — Nicki’s aggressively underwhelming response to “SHEther” — should finally be the nail in that theory’s coffin. Because its solid, concrete proof that she, in fact, writes her own rhymes. Because if she had a team of ghostwriters working around the clock for the past three weeks — brainstorming and burning the midnight oil — they definitely, absolutely, totally would have written something better than her 40-degree-day-ass verse in this 30-degree-day-ass song. (Also, the irony of an actor who regularly raps about “running up on niggas” and a Fisher Price: My Very First Gang Sign blood hopping on a track called “No Frauds” isn’t lost on anyone. Young Mula. Baby.)

And yes, I know Nas took months to respond to “The Takeover” with “Ether” and, based on that precedent, we shouldn’t jab Nicki about it taking three whole weeks to respond. But that was in 2001, when niggas still used dial-up connections, AOL, and Ask Jeeves. Today, if a big news story breaks and you happen to write for The Washington Post or the New York Times or even VSB, you’re expected to be able to produce 600-1000 solid and publishable words on it immediately. Not a day after it happens, but in an hour or two. We just have a different expectation of the immediacy of media. And, in 2017, three weeks is a long ass fucking time to wait for lukewarm basura.

  • KNeale

I feel like Remy won the battle but lost the war. I am a Nicki fan but this exposed to me her limits and how scared she actually was. But I wish Remy would not have been so focused on her and focused on her own music. And Nicki being more “famous” matters now (unfortunately) as now the conversation is all about who will sell more and not about the bars. Sad situation really lol.

    • Annalise Keating

“But I wish Remy would not have been so focused on her and focused on her own music.”

with the press and publicity tour Remy has been through since she released shether, it almost seems like she needed this Record/beef to sell records and for publicity. As opposed to relying on the her skills alone to speak for itself

      • Kylroy

Seconded. Put it this way – VSB might be be talking about Remy right now without this feud (emphasis *might*), but there’s not way broader pop culture takes a single glance at her without Nicki being involved.

      • LegallyClueless

I keep hearing this argument, but Remy been doing interviews since she got out, and had a double platinum single, and nominated for two Grammys all while bigging up Nicki. Before Shether dropped she was already doing promo for her and Fat Joe’s album…

        • KingsCounty

yea but since the diss, she’s been doing odd press for a rap album, like do rappers go on wendy williams to promote albums? i dont know but i thought it was odd. then she did some cable access looking show where she dissed foxy brown being deaf.
remy didnt plan this beef so she couldnt have predicted this to promote a flopping album, it kinda just fell in her lap and she jumped on it.

          • Annalise Keating

“remy didnt plan this beef so she couldnt have predicted this to promote a flopping album, it kinda just fell in her lap and she jumped on it”

            I see no lies here

          • LegallyClueless

Wendy said it was already booked but who knows the truth, Another Round is a great podcast produced by Buzzfeed (not a cable access show lol); Remy def got some shine due to this but I don’t think it was only because of it.

It just reminds me (to a WAY smaller scale) of when ppl said Kanye’s VMA stunt made Taylor Swift when she was selling millions before. It definitely introduced her to a group of people (mainly black) who didn’t know her music, but she was doing pretty good. Same with Remy, she was in her lane, doing her thing, people loving her comeback story and her Black Love with Papoose.

            • KingsCounty

i really wished she woulda dropped music without fatjoe. we have been waiting for Remy, not fat joe.
personally i think the project flopped cuz nobody wants to hear fat joe.

  • Courtney Wheeler

Hmmm. Should I even bother and listen to the response? I’m already over it…

  • panamajackson

The irony of the “No Frauds” title is the most entertaining thing about the record.

    • Which makes it even more disappointing.

    • TheCollinB

A great time to promote Rock Ross’s remix for “Buy Back the Block” with Nipsey, Slim Thug, E40 and Fat Joe who are all literally buying up the property in their respective cities and neighborhoods to keep things black and black adjacent.

      • Doug Chu

I’m here for that kind of community development.

    • miss t-lee

      Agreed.

  • Annalise Keating

What does it mean when a diss about how many men nicki slept with, how many people she splits her profits with is considered a better than diss than talking about remy risking her career, 8 years with her son/ 8 years in prison for a measly $1000??

Can’t say I Side with either Nicky or Remy on this one.

    • SoonToBeMrs

Remy ALL MUTHAPHAKKIN day. I don’t even care if she was talking about pumpkins, potatoes and stilletos.

      • Annalise Keating

I can’t disagree that Nickis song was lame. But I refuse to Side with Remy on principle ?

        • SoonToBeMrs

I refuse to side with Nicki on principle too.

          • Annalise Keating

We agree on this. Hence why I said I don’t pick either one. ?

            • SoonToBeMrs

No we don’t. Because I picked (that’s a hengrish word right?) a side. Lol.

  • A.G.

If Remy can’t perform “SHEther” and the song has now been taken off Soundcloud, YouTube, etc, does that mean Nicki still “wins” even with this weak song?

    • panamajackson

Nope. Just like you can’t erase Chris Webber from U of Michigan…we all know what happened.

      • A.G.

Right. Some shadows you can’t get rid of.

      • Reggie Bush and OJ. won Heisman’s too.

        • A.G.

          And where are they now…

          • Reggie is rich (I mean dude eeked out an 11 year career at running back) and OJ is in the hoosegow.

            • TheCollinB

OJ is about to come up after he gets out. Those two shows turned that n*gga into gold for television.

              • Yeah, today’s trash media will get him paid.

                • miss t-lee

Yeah, it’s about to be heylla specials and documentaries all over again.

            • Val

              Reggie is a semi-bust.

              • Kylroy

I’m hesitant to call anyone who plays regularly in the NFL for a decade a bust. Possibly a disappointment, but that’s a matter of relative expectations.

                • Val

When you consider the hype and expectations when he hit the league, he’s definitely a semi-bust.

                  • Kylroy

If he had to be a Hall of Famer to be considered an unqualified success, then I guess you can call him a semi-bust.

                • miss t-lee

You make it long enough to get that pension, and they could call me whatever they want.

              • Only if you go by those expecting him to be a bell-cow running back. Any one with eyes knew he wasn’t a between the tackles guy.

                • Val

I didn’t say he was awful or not a decent running back. He had his moments. I said when you consider the expectations and hype when he entered the league he’s, not a bust, but a semi-bust.

                  • I don’t put that on him. GM’s and scouts got him drafted to high. Just like Ted Ginn. The GM from the Texans who passed om him got fired for making the right call.

            • B-Dot Willz

let us also add the Reggie’s side piece/baby mam is now doing alright after his blunder.

          • Kylroy

Reggie seems to be doing OK…

            • SoonToBeMrs

He out here thotting and getting side babies with Kim kardashian look a likes.

              • TheCollinB

                You like what you like.

                • SoonToBeMrs

…and you keep falling how you fall?

                  • TheCollinB

                    These are facts

                  • TheCollinB

I’m guessing but your avatar you have a trail of trevante’s?

                    • Blueberry01

Lissen, homie. I would only need one Trevante. #BlessYouOhLordForYourHandiwork

There wouldn’t be no trail of nothing after him – unless he’s an a** cuz I can’t stand jerks.

                    • TheCollinB

You and my wife both then, she loves that n*gga.
Good for that guy tho huh?! :/

                    • Blueberry01

It’s okay, TCB. I’m sure that you’re still Big Sexy Soft Nose to her.

                    • TheCollinB

The most I’ll ever be is cute to her….which is awesome because every grown man wants to be cute! Again, :/

                    • Blueberry01

Awww…lol. Ask her to upgrade you to “handsome” as a birthday gift.

                    • TheCollinB

Or, or I could just ask Serena Williams to back hand me in the neck with a tennis racket. No n*gga ever wants to be cute, the two words have no correlation.

                    • Blueberry01

D*mn, homie. It sounds like the way that she refers to you is important. Have you talked to her about how it makes you feel when she calls you that?

If not, perhaps you should. Trust me when I say that no women truly knows how acutely our words affect a man…well, until after he starts being passive-aggressive.

If so, give her suggestions on what else she can use instead of something that reminds you of Serena Slam.

                    • TheCollinB

I was a little too “prop 64” last night to respond, but your response made me think way more than I expected it to.
I don’t mind not being her type but to me a woman isn’t looking for “cute”, but if cute is what it is then I can’t change that to her.
no convo to be had tho, it is what it is.

                    • Blueberry01

TCB, you trippin’ right now so I’m just going to attribute it to the weed.

                      1) How do you know that you’re not her type? Did she force you to marry her and make babies with her by gunpoint?

                      2) How do you know what ALL women want in terms of attractiveness? Or, even what the terms that they use to communicate male attractiveness mean TO THEM?

Her saying someone is “cute” could be her way of saying that you meet her standard of attractiveness when she was looking to check that box. Or, she could have called you “LotusFlowerBomb” since you think that “cute” doesn’t have a nice ring to it.

And I DEFINITELY think a convo needs to be had because: a) this is important to you; and b) she probably doesn’t know how this makes you feel or she would have ceased in using the word.

But I’m curious as to if there are other underlying concerns that you have that would need to be addressed:

                      1) Do you feel good about the way you look?

                      2) Are you confident that she finds you attractive?

                      3) Do you believe that in face of the multitude of men that she encounters daily that she KNOWS that no one can compare to her husband?

That’s the homework that you need to do.

                      #NamasteMyN*gga

            • A.G.

I like Kendrick but let’s be honest Control was trash! Shether is trash and so is No frauds and the other two corny a$s songs she made.

      • A.G.

        ??? same here!!

  • TheCollinB

you know who won this battle?

    Sony music

Why come? The deal Nas had when he originally made Ether was crap and he subsequently owns basically none of the original Ether record. Ron Browz who made the beat owns very little of it. Sony’s lawyer team put some real bars together and told Remy and radio if you spin that shyt, rap it at a club, even hum that mother fucker they’re suing. But they’re going to let it rock on iTunes because they now get everything on it if it’s purchased through iTunes.

    Stay woke

    • miss t-lee

      Great breakdown.

  • For those who don’t get Champ’s “The Wire” reference;

    https://youtu.be/7ttbQTz8tAE

A highlight in a TV show filled with highlights.

    • ‘Yerzus

Ohhhhh. I’ve never seen this show so I didn’t get it. And I had to watch this twice to (I think) get it. Idris soundin all hood is maaaad distracting.

      • KingsCounty

you know what, i’m gonna pretend i’ve never seen the wire now.
i’m gonna be that guy at parties. a lil social experiment

        • ‘Yerzus

Lol don’t. People look at you strange.

  • HouseOfBonnets

All I know is Nicki can no longer claim queen of rap without being questioned Stans be d##med. While Remy had her fumbles she still has the win.

I expected better from the best verse on Monster.

    • SoonToBeMrs

But she ain’t never been no queen. Those are false claims and she should be sued.

      • HouseOfBonnets

We know this…… Stans live in Bizzaro world.

      • I guess queen by default. Nicki rose when there wasn’t any credible competition against her.

        • SoonToBeMrs

          Please.

    • miss t-lee

I’m just trying to figure out who bestowed her that title?

      • HouseOfBonnets

        Herself…. Out of nowhere.

        • TheCollinB

I’ve made two such claims in my life and they’ve gone unrefuted:
          1. In college I had the softest nose in the 7 cities area of Virginia.
          2. In the 21-35 male age bracket I have the best seasoning hand on the western seaboard.

          • ‘Yerzus

            lol Softest nose?

For real though. He jumped his azz straight into the fire.

          • Pretty much. Though Rosenberg and Nick have history with each other. He trashed Starships (which earned it fair and square), and she decided to pull out of SummerJam as a result.

          • KingsCounty

i kinda hate part time rap fans hot takes on rap battles, rap beef, rap subliminals etc. its just so frustrating.
its like watching football with a person that doesnt know the game but is trying to have a thorough conversation saying tom brady got a triple double. thats what some of yall on this site sound like. i just want yall to know that i’m looking down at yall.

rap beef is a marathon not a sprint, fans constant begging for an immediate response then getting it and being mad it isnt what they wanted it to be is trash.
when we rush the artist we get trash. i hope Remy takes her time before she responds i’d rather good music than rushed trash.
all the disses in the meek/drake battle have been solid, except for the one meek rushed to please yall.

    • HouseOfBonnets

I mean Remy posted sheather in less than 48 hours….. We have the technology imo.

Also in the case of meek he waited and it was still trash so….

      • miss t-lee

Exact we have all the technology.

      • KingsCounty

yea and papoose wrote her a 7 min song. pap does that in his sleep. and remy wrote a response in what 4 days and we already know that was trash…

        • HouseOfBonnets

Still the tech is here for a response Meek vs. Drake put that in motion….either adapt of falter.

          • KingsCounty

the tech has always been here.
we rushed jayz to respond to ether, he rushed super ugly and took it to hot97 immediately.
it was rushed, and it was trash.

            • HouseOfBonnets

              that’s debatable

        • FeeFee

How do you know papoose wrote her song?

          • KingsCounty

            my ears.

            • FeeFee

              oh…ok…

    • TheCollinB

Remy comes from battle rap tho. She is of the cloth that if someone is trying to get at you she’s ready to get to it. She stepped outside her box with the second record but I believe Remy can write bars for Nicki all day.

      • KingsCounty

thats what angers me about her diss records. she didnt need Papoose to pen Shether, i’d much rather hear Remy than Pap. Remy is nice, like real life nice with the wordplay. so her 2nd diss was rushed because of fans gassing her.
my argument has always been that subs are better than name calling diss records anyway.
all the subs remy been throwing all year have been fire. thats what i want more of.

        • TheCollinB

Word to Biggie subbing Jeru right to Preemo’s face while Recording “10 Crack Commandments”

          • KingsCounty

like this silent war between Jay-Z and Drake right now is golden to me. drake is trying to raise his voice to papa and jay is smacking his hand hard in almost every verse he’s dropped lately.

            • TheCollinB

It’s been great. I don’t know that I’d wanna be drake balancing between the Jay bars and Kendrick bars he could succumb to gettin bodied at any moment. But he’s managing well.

        • KNeale

Whats the source that Papoose write the track?

    • KNeale

You had to insult everyone before you gave your opinion? Because we disagree with your opinion we are all “part time rap fans” aka unqualified/fake? Damb. Why it had to be all that?

      • KingsCounty

cuz i’m looking for a battle lol
        everybody in fighting mode

but na its not really an opinion i disagree with, just the “new rules” that dont exist that ppl are swearing by. rap doesnt follow any rules, disses come whenever they come and we sit up straight and enjoy.
i hate the idea of this have to respond with an equal record in 48hrs or your career is over. it hurts the quality of the music. lets the artist create.
