VSB in NYC, Explained

(Photo courtesy of Jonathan Newton/Washington Post; Flyer courtesy of Panama Jackson/VSB)

Hey man, what’s happening?

Nothing, just bhillin. The usual.

Y’all going to NYC?

It’s in the title.

You right. You right. So, why are you going to NYC? I hear it’s the concrete jungle where dreams are made of.

Damon and I are heading to the big city of dreams to meet and greet all of our newest co-workers with The Root/Gizmodo Media. It suggests to be a jolly and merry good time with food, drinks, and merriment. We’re looking forward to meeting our new co-defendents and what not in this new venture for us.

You know what you guys should do? Since you’re going to be in NYC? You should have a meetup.

Bruh.

What? For real for real. You should.

That’s exactly what we’re doing. In fact, on the very flyer up there that says “vsb in nyc” we state where we’ll be around 830pm. We’re doing dinner there – we hear it’s awesome – and since Damon and I are muy lazy, we’re like, “why leave, why not just invite everybody to come where WE are!?” So we’re gonna be mackin’ and hangin’ at Burger and Lobster in the Flatiron district on Friday night (that’s August 4th) at 830pm.

It’s like you read my mind. So meta. What can we expect if we come out see you guys? Free drinks? Lapdances? Firebreathers?

Probably a solid mix of none of that shit. I mean, it’s entirely possible that a round of shots might be on us. It is a celebration after all, and what’s a celebration without shots. In DC, I bought a round of shots and handed them out to friends and strangers alike in celebration. Almost nobody said “thank you” either. But like Joe and Chico DeBarge sang to us….life has no guarantees.

Did you really just name drop Chico DeBarge?

Yes. Yes I did. He should send me a thank you card.

Are there any after Burger and Lobster plans?

Listen, I’m up for anything. We have a solid crew of folks in NYC that we’re always happy to see and hang with and who allegedly believe in the turn up. But who knows where the night may take us. But mostly, we’d just like to see as many folks as possible who support and helped get us to where we are today. If that’s you, we’d love to meet you.

Do you look out for people who really want to come say hello but pretend like they aren’t there to see you guys and kind of stand off in the corner, or perhaps leave and then say, “hey, sad I missed you!”

Yes. We look out for people like that. If that’s you, I promise, we do not bite. Come, commiserate, meet some new friends. Damon and I are the friendliest chaps you don’t know, and despite his recent glow up, Damon hasn’t gotten too big for his britches. He’s still the same ole approachable G. Shouts to Ginuwine.

Well, I’m convinced. See you Friday.

See you Friday. By the way, who are you?

  • BM, Superman

Is there a fake woke factory and how do I invest in it because I’m seeing everyone say this “Extroverted Introvert” bullshit.

    • Tam

What the heck is that? I always thought you were either/or

      • BM, Superman

        I guess not anymore.

        • Tam

I am so wary of labels and the new things ways of comporting one’s self.

          • Alessandro De Medici

The new label is to be anti-labels lol.

Individual complexity/incoherence has become a virtue.

            • Tam

Lol. Sorry that’s not me. I’m “stubborn”, I do not think so, but people complain about that trait and I say they’re wrong.

              • Alessandro De Medici

                Care to expand on this?

                • Tam

Apparently once I make up my mind on something, nothing any one says can make me change my mind, or so people claim. They claim that I may not even listen to the counter argument and would be out of hand dismissive. I do not think that is the case, but I concede that I dismiss people easily and tune them out especially if I think they are talking non-sense

            • Tam

              Morning

              • Alessandro De Medici

                Morning!

            • i thought the new thing was to be anti-labels except against the thing ‘one’ doesn’t like?

    • “I like to read books and party!” lazy way to appear multifacted and deep because being extroverted has a bad reputation on the internet.

      • BM, Superman

When did extrovert become a slur? #ExtrovertPride #We’reheteandactuallyenjoyingoyrselves

        • back when the internet was more introvert than extrovert heavy. a little before social media was huge huge

        • MsSula

I am an extrovert and so proud of it.
But we are definitely not the majority online. I have met a lot of people irl from online, and most of them are very quiet and shy.

          • BM, Superman

Agreed. I’m a large personality online and in person.

          • cysinblack

The internet is a haven for social misfits and shut-ins.

          • I’ve finally embraced being an extrovert after like decades of pretending to be shy because….mommy issues. I really enjoy being around people these days. #ExtrovertAndProud

            • MsSula

When I started my MBA they made us take a test. And I was like not even on the spectrum like most people.

I often go into meetings and just think about stuff on the fly. I get energy from meeting people and brains thinking. It doesn’t mean I don’t have solitary pursuits or downtime because I do. But I gather energy from being around other thinking people… reason why I have to be very meticulous who I surround myself with… bad energies will drain the fluck out of me.

    • siante

spoken like a true extrovert lol

  • I’m too old to eat dinner so late. My digestive system says have fun though!

    • BM, Superman

Its 8:33am EC time, are you in Nigeria or something Pinks?

  • Brooklyn_Bruin
    • NonyaB?

No, you shouldn’t. Errybody and errything deserve to roam free in their natural environments, which would be outdoors for animals. Same reason why I’m not for zoos.

      • MsSula

I absolutely hate zoos. They make no sense to me.

        • NonyaB?

Yep. I’ve always believed that if I can’t travel to Africa for giraffes and co. or Antartica to meet penguins, then I’ll make do with pictures and video.

        • esa

zoos take “dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth” to the most irrational conclusion. masquerading as conservation cause they destroying natural habitats.

    • PDL….HE still working on me

No. They are designed to maintain in their natural habitat. That ain’t my house. That’s roaming in nature.

    • Alessandro De Medici

It’s a philosophical issue to be honest.

The driving premise of the paper and the school of thought is that at the core of what makes a thing a human or human-like is primarily their emotions. So if we know animals have certain emotions similar to us, we should offer them rights or at the very least, offer them a certain sense of dignity. However, a very similar argument is made by those who subscribe to the gaia hypothesis, that the world itself, it’s plants, waters, air all have emotions and that everytime it is “abused” it strikes back with a certain type of vengeance of sorts.

As far as I see it, I think these ideas, especially in their modern form, stem primarily from a thing that is unique to us as humans: strong feelings of self-hatred. You see this in the tendency nowadays especially in affluent societies to consistently seek to cut down, what needs or necessities human beings require to live. Some of these people seem to even resent the fact that we assume human beings have any needs whatsoever. I’m sure if we stopped eating Animals or had no pets, they would eventually come for wheat. https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/animal-emotions/201412/smarty-plants-research-shows-they-think-feel-and-learn

So I don’t know the answer to your question, as much as I’m more interested in seeing how far our unique and human example of specie-hatred can go, before it reaches it’s only logical conclusion.

    • esa

a few animals have been domesticated, but most have not. that seems to be the line in terms of which animals benefit from keeping company with people.

  • Valerie

I just want to see the Broadway play Cats when I eventually visit NYC. Hopefully it’s still running by then.

    • siante

I just saw a commercial advertising that it’s back on Broadway. it really is beautiful, I saw it eons ago on a school trip when I was like 9 lol, but I may have to check it out myself now that I’m a grown up.

  • Kim

Burger & Lobster is literally down the block from my office but I’m also one of those people who really wants to say hello but will stand in the corner.

    • You Know I’m Sawcy

lol I’m so jealous. Wear dark sunglasses so no one can see you eyeing the exits the entire time?

      • Kim

Lmao Good idea, I’m definitely coming prepared with my shades in my bag.

    • Tam

Go and stand in the corner. Give a nice wave and smile if you are approached.

      • Kim

: ) I hate being shy. I’ll probably bring my BF, say hello and reserve a corner table incase I need to retreat.

        • Tam

I know what you mean. But do bring the BF and have a nice evening out. Knowing me, I would be excited to go and then find a reason not to go at the last minute.

          • Simms~

This is my life. Always hyped in advance and then when I get home and the bed looks inviting I find all the excuses in the world to stay in.

            • Tam

That was me on Tuesday mornning. I was so hyped about this obstacle colour run. Then Monday night I started going through reasons not to go, the first being I would have to get up earlier. When I woke I heard the rain and I was like “yes”, but then the texts came, so out my bed I went. I am so glad I did go.

              • Simms~

It always works out that way too. Don’t wanna go but then have a blast when I do end up going.

I have no sitter for Friday night else I would have gone cause I love Burger and Lobster and always enjoy it when I go there.

              • MsSula

We had a color run last month. It was so much fun.

                • Tam

Yeah. At every stop I was like, I need my colours.

    • MsSula

Go and stand in a corner. Someone is going to say hello!

    • Be friends with us!

      • Kim

lol I am…will you be there?

  • Uncle Remus

Damon has post on the Root. Y’all go ack a fool on they couch.
    http://www.theroot.com/procter-gamble-release-an-ad-about-the-talk-and-wh-1797479819

    • Tam

Lol. I tested the waters seem like those of us who had commented before are still cleared.

  • You Know I’m Sawcy

I really feel some kind of way that Philly gets no love in these meetup events #ItsNotThatBadGuysSeriously

I want a burger with a lobster on it (what else could they serve?). I want a lapdance. I wanna wear coordinating onesies with Malik. LET ME BE GREAT, VSB.

    • MsSula

It’s just a couple of hours away. Treat yo’ self!!!

      • You Know I’m Sawcy

I would but it’s so late at night I’d need a place to stay overnight :(

        • MsSula

          That’s true.

          Ricky may help you? Lol

          • You Know I’m Sawcy

We’ve discussed. Won’t work out this time around.

        • Tam

Rewind may help you out on that one.

          • You Know I’m Sawcy

Rewind act like he don’t know nobody in Philly no more. It’s fine, I’ll just try to make arrangements for a later meetup.

            • Tam

              Please be patient with him.

              • You Know I’m Sawcy

That’s my bew, it’s all love. I’ll get around to a VSB meetup eventually.

                • Tam

                  Good you had me worried.

    • Brass Tacks

Sawyer and Malik in matching onesies is the type of goals we should all strive for.

    • NonyaB?

I approve this message. Sawcita and Malik in matching onesies would be such a sight to behold!

  • Brass Tacks

Are flowers no longer a good thing?

A co worker had a flowers delivered to her office. and while I thought the gesture seemed nice, a couple coworkers commented that it’s kinda…archaic?

Maybe i’m ol’ fashioned, Is this no longer a good thing?

    • NonyaB?

      Your colleagues are from mars.

      • Brass Tacks

I thought so. But then again…I don’t know what’s considered relevant anymore.

        • Tam

You got lots of company. I think I am relying on VSB to help me navigate what is acceptable from what is not.

        • NonyaB?

Flowers is one of the most benign/inoffensive social gestures still around. Some use or view it generally, while others assess in more detail i.e. noting intentions to flower type (red roses = love, yellow = friendship/welcome, etc).

    • Tam

I am trying to think of a list of reasons why it is bad. Are they vegan ? Ethically sourced? Linked to autism?

      • Brass Tacks

No. It was a nice arrangement. I just overheard some of the commentary and it was basically like: Who does this anymore?

        • Tam

I am lost. Can’t help you because like yourself, I always think floral deliveries are nice. Can I just chalk it up to jealousy?

          • LadySiriboe

Oh absolutely. They could have shut up and let the lady enjoy her delivery, but nooooooo, they had to inject their fake feminist ideals.

            • Tam

Jealousy is such a powerful tool and hard to mask no matter what you put in front of it.

        • LadySiriboe

Hi sweeerie. It’s just bishes catching feelings because their phakk boys of boyfriends won’t commit and send them flowers.

          • MsSula

You said nothing but a word.

          • Tam

            Lol.

      • cysinblack

Being allergic is the only reason to be anti-plant/flower.

        • Tam

I know but I am thinking of any and all ridiculous reason people are coming up to be anti anything. I forgot to add Gluten Free.

    • YeaSoh

Flowers are still cool. Back when I used to get flowers I wasn’t that into it because I’m not really a flower person (or a gift person really) spending time is more my love language and my ex would send flowers because he couldn’t spend time so there’s that. As T-Lee would say know your audience.

      • Brass Tacks

I agree. Time is the most valuable resource you can give someone. But if you can’t be near them and they are on your mind. Wouldn’t flowers be a nice way of saying: Hey, I’m thinking of you?

But from what i’m hearing that may no longer be the case…

        I swear womenfolk befuddle me.

        • YeaSoh

Everyone isn’t the same. It is a nice gesture. And yeah, you could do worse than someone sending you flowers to let you know they care. So if that’s what you want to do, do it. But for me don’t bother.

        • LadySiriboe

We are not a monolith. So let me help you think of me. Western Union or Venmo money instead for a pedicure. That’s how I know you right thoughts of me are genuine. Are you still befuddled or we now super crystal clear, darling?

    • MsSula

Why do I detect slight jealousy from the coworkers?

      • Tam

That was my other conclusion after going through he bullshid hipster arguments.

      • Brass Tacks

I want to chalk it up to that as well…But didn’t want to mansplain my opinion so I came on here to get y’all opinion.

      • NonyaB?

Seriously. Can’t imagine how one could have any negative reaction at receiving flowers.

        • Tam

Cos they not getting anything besides bill and unrequited horniness. Ok I am going into my corner.

        • MsSula

Me thinks they wanted ol girl to feel bad. There is nothing wrong with flowers.

          I am a flower person.

          • LadySiriboe

I’m not a flower person, but I’d be like, as per the gesture, he is a keeper!

        • Diego Duarte

Aside from allergies? Pretty much no reason to.

      • LadySiriboe

They are. They just not outright with it.

    • You Know I’m Sawcy

I keep dating more and more people who say that flowers aren’t a nice gesture because they’re just going to die. They usually turn out to be sociopaths tho.

    • Freebird

Flowers still work for women who like good gestures and thoughtfulness. For those that are used to mostly p enis and promises, I’m not sure.

      • YeaSoh

So I don’t appreciate thoughtfulness because I’m not into flowers? Ok then.

        • Freebird

You don’t have to like flowers to appreciate the thoughtfulness behind receiving them. You know you better than I do.

          • YeaSoh

I’m going off what you wrote.

            • Freebird

You wrote that flowers are still cool.

          • PDL….HE still working on me

Exactly. I don’t know any woman that can’t appreciate thoughtfulness. I certainly do.

      • Brass Tacks

Free… iono no more. I thought it was dope. The person receiving the flowers was happy. But the convo after she went to her office was more along the lines of why are men still sending flowers like its the 90s?

        • Freebird

If you send flowers to a woman and she holds it against you leave her firmly in 2000 and now. Women are out her complaining about modern dating. I’m saying…..

    • Alessandro De Medici
      • MsSula

Total Amebos!!! And enemies of progress!!!

        • Alessandro De Medici

Lmao, I haven’t heard that word in a minute!

        • NonyaB?

Ahahaha, exactly! Enemies are always trying to truncate others’ hustle!

    • BM, Superman

90% of the time dudes who send flowers tend to overestimate their relationship with the woman in question and it becomes weird, at least in my experience.

      • Brass Tacks

I can understand that. But again, the woman receiving the flowers was HAPPY! The people watching…not so much.

        • Ms.Moon

That can also be the point of sending flowers. The woman receiving the flowers is happy and her female coworkers are green with envy it a twofer.

      • Cheech

This was my experience when I was the young dude in question.
As a married person, it is entirely different and expected every so often.

    • Simms~

Flowers are great. Those people are haters.

    • LadySiriboe

I am not a flowers girl. I also would not like my significant other sending them to my office. I’m private.

Having said that, in the event he sent them, I would give him a thank you call and have a talk with him 2 days later.

      And it’s a GREAT gesture.

      • YeaSoh

My sister!! It’s like looking in a mirror! Must be a Scorpio thing

        • LadySiriboe

          ????

        • LadySiriboe

My dear I think it is a Scorpio thing. I’m the most unromantic woman on earth.

          • YeaSoh

Me too. I just want to eat good, laugh and hang out. You do that, you good.

    • Hugh Akston

      lol

    • Brooklyn_Bruin

      They single? Figures
      They attractive? Figures

    • siante

Were they men or women commenting?

      • Tam

        $0.10 on women

        • siante

haha! I got my money on hoteps/white men – $1.00

      • Brass Tacks

        Women.

I’m the only BM in my office, so I was like let me check in on here to make sure Im not reading this wrong.

        • siante

welp then every body else commenting is right. The flowers put envy into the heart of the women in the office- which means women still love this gesture.

    • old fashioned = bad

    • esa

for some folks, the game it to take people out of the game. the power of sabotage is profound.

    • Cleojonz

Sounds like jealous heiffers to me. It’s still a good and thoughtful thing to do.
Unless of course homeboy caught wind of an office husband and is publicly staking a claim lol.

      • Bishes still be jealous, doe. They probably couldn’t their Tinder fuck buddy of the week to send them a dandelion weed.

        • Cleojonz

HA HA HA Not dandelion weed though!

    • PDL….HE still working on me

That would change if someone sent to them.

  • BM, Superman

There is a town called Peru, Indiana? Wow. I wouldn’t name sh*t after anyone or any place in Indiana, that’s the ultimate insult. State has to be the least interesting state in the country. I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy.

    • LadySiriboe

      Indiana has very good colleges.

      • BM, Superman

        Yes! Huge fan of Perdue.

        • LadySiriboe

          Aaaaaaayyyyye!!!!!! Yazzzzzz!!!!! Me 2!!!!

    • Diego Duarte

Apparently there’s a Peru in Nebraska too. Though I’ll steer clear from either.

    • Tam

While you at it you might as well rename all spanish sounding /origin names.

      • BM, Superman

Jalepenos will become Jollypenos. (Had a boss who used to say this.)

        • Tam

I suppose that is how it was meant to be pronounced

    • i drove by Brazil.

      Brazil, Illinois.

about to move there too, i heard the womens were cute
