the tallying is taking a bit longer than i anticipated. with this in mind, i’m going to post the results (and my thoughts about them) in tomorrow’s entry.

after reading “is she cute?”: the one topic men and women never agree on…and why–an entry that touches on the different ways men and women judge female physical attractiveness–my girlfriend came up with an interesting activity for the next game night.
***btw, game night = a rotating monthly event where 20 to 30 of our friends get together on a saturday night, drink rum, eat chicken wings, and play spades, wii, taboo, and whatever else will ensure the maximum amount of fun, drunken flirtations, and occasional hurt feelings possible***
her idea: print out 10 pictures of random women, and have both the men and the women present rank them from 1 to 10 (not rate, mind you. rank). then, tally up the rankings, and see how the cumulative male score compares to the cumulative female score.
although actually pulling this off at a game night would be a logistical nightmare (seriously, imagine trying to do this in a roomful of two dozen ridiculously educated and ego-rific muthaf*ckers, whose drunkenness and horniness has given them the collective attention span of a vick brother. actually, on second thought, this might actually be entertaining as hell), i thought her idea was a great one. for all the talk and theory that men and women have different ways of assessing attractiveness, i’ve never seen any empirical evidence that we actually do.
with this in mind, we’re going to do a little experiment today. below i’ve posted pictures of 5 attractive men and 5 attractive women, each with varying hairstyles and complexions. none of these men or women would probably be considered a perfect “10“, but each would probably rank at least in the “6” or “7” range by most. this is intentional.
each picture is also numbered.
your task:
***for the pictures of the women***
vsb’s and vss’s: leave a comment ranking the women from 1 to 5 (for instance, if you left a comment saying “42154“, this would mean that you thought “4″ was the most attractive, “2″ the second most attractive”, “1″ the third most attractive, etc).
***for the pictures of the men***
we’re going to do something a little different.
1. vss’s, rank the men from 1 to 5, same as you did the women
2. vsb’s, rank the men from 1 to 5. but instead of ranking them based on how attractive you think they are, base your ranking on who you think the women would be most attracted to (for instance, if you left a comment saying “42154″, this would mean that you thought “4″ would be first on most women’s lists, “2″ would be second on most women’s list, etc)
***also (vsb’s and vss’s), it won’t hurt to type your reasoning for your decisions if you’re able to articulate them.***
i’ll tally up the vsb’s comments and the vss’s comments at noon (the time when the comments usually reach the halfway mark) and at 5pm (when the comments usually slow down) and post them in the entry.
my predictions?
1. for the women, i’m guessing that the vss’s will go “32415″ and the vsb’s will go “43152″
2. for the men, i’m guessing that the vss’s will go “51324″ and the vsb’s will go “14253″

Legality aside, this test would be hella interesting if it included pix of 10 VSBs and VSSs…I wonder how many of us would agree to 1) bravely submit a pic of ourselves to be ranked; and 2) remain objective about it.

The rest, I’m sorry, are 3′s. In no special order, here’s why:
#4 looks borin’ as hell; #3 looks like a daschund with a wig (and it looks like she’s tryin’ to push the girls in your face); #s 1&2 look have on too much damn make up, #1′s expression is a little scary, and number 2 looks old as hell (but I probably think that because of all that face paint).

3 – He’s my fav! He’s chocolatey, has his natural goin’ on, he has a solemn expression, but it’s not rigid; it’s a bit easy. His lips are a little crusty lookin’, but they’re not cracked. Hell, they’re kinda luscious. Mmm-boy!

Case in point, Lenny oozes sex appeal although he may look a lil’ unclean at times (I’ll wash him down and have my way though!), but in the picture posted not as much. I also like well-groomed men and bohemian men. Neither is mutually ( a well-groomed man can be bohemian) exclusive and the attractiveness factor sometimes has to do with a man’s personal style. Yes, I peeped the earrings on 5 and the past diva dude talk, but his shirt doesn’t look smedium and he doesn’t have on stunna shades at night. Plus, none of my exes resemble 5 (yay!). I understand the rationale for the separate instructions for ranking the men. So, for those who will read this comment early on, let me burst whatever bubble you may be in. Those instructions are there to sidestep any potential “a man ranking how attractive he finds other men is gay”. The double standard is clearly implicit in the lack of similar instruction for women.
However, there is nothing new in all this. And technically, the two instructions, different as though they may seem, essentially both ask the same thing, rank the men according to how attractive YOU find them. Whether you pretend it’s how attractive women will find them is irrelevant, you are the one doing the ranking anyway. So, I tear away the shield and render all male responders suspect.
Unless of course you are willing to grow up and realize that a man rating or ranking the attractiveness of other men does not itself give any real insight into his sexuality. Or certainly, given that the Champ has already preselected the pool of pictures, there is not enough variation for anyone to statistically make any remotely meaningful guess on the sexuality of respondents to this survey.
All that being said, I actually will be posting my ranking later this morning/afternoon. For various reasons I won’t go into, I’m not in the state of mind where I can do this. I am in a state of mind that allows me to comment on certain things and will likely be up for the next 3 hours, but other functions, like ranking attractiveness or writing some code (which I bet will only take me 1 hour max later this morning) feel impossible – like that part of my mind is just walking in circles. . . which is annoying because I was hoping on getting that done so I’d have time to goof off in the morning.

It’s ok for guys to rate another guy’s “attractiveness” as along as we’re actually rating his ugliness and not his cuteness, if that makes any sense at all. Here’s an example: If I’m standing with my homeboi’s and a dude walks by and I say, “Man that ninja is uglier than a mofo! What’s up with dude’s teeth?!”, then the homies would probably join in on the discussion of how utterly oogly said ninja was. Or if I saw a dude with an ugly mug with a pretty chick and I asked, “How did he pull her?!”, the homies might reply, “He must be paid!” Now let’s say I’m standing around and a dude walks by and if I were to I exclaim, “Man that dude has a nice jawline and some exotic looking eyes”, I’d would mos def end up homeboi-less.
I know that doesn’t make sense, and I know that by judging a dude’s unattractiveness, we’re actually judging his attractiveness in reverse. I get that, but this male hypermasculinity is a complex and strange entity.
Of course, scenario #3 would never happen cause my comment was written with an implicit “Pause. No homo” in mind:-)

I disagree with that, obviously. I think men can discuss attractiveness of other men without a need to directly or indirectly immediately proclaim their non-homosexuality to their other male friends.
If you see a good looking dude with an attractive chick do you then pretend he is deficient in some way so that you can comment on his attractiveness or pretend lack thereof? Or do you find some other fault which allows you to comment on how/why he could be with the chick so you bypass this issue altogether.

The really amusing/confusing part about it is that we {being the 100% heterosexual portion} are comfortable living under that constant cloud of suspicion. Like we as men aren’t waiting to be liberated from all this homophobia so we can openly judge another man’s attractiveness without fear of persecution. It’s not some freedom we secretly desire! And to answer your question about what happens when we do encounter a “good looking dude”….well I don’t know cause I honest to goodness only see ugly dudes and non-ugly dudes. Like if I was grading on an absolute vs. a relative scale, the only grades dudes could get would be a D-, an F, or a n/a.
My ex girlfriend had a huge crush on Columbus Short. To me he’s just an n/a like 90 percent of dudes on earth. However, in this specific instance where Champ was 100% right was in playing to the least common denominator. Had he phrased the instruction to strictly judge the male test subject’s attractiveness, many guys, including yours truly, wouldn’t have responded. And it’s not because I have to protect some non-existent reputation in a semi-open forum where virtually no one knows me offline. For me personally, when it comes to a man’s attractiveness, it actually is quite simple: I just can’t do it. I am completely incapable of evaluating the physical beauty of a man’s facade. If I could, I would, but I can’t, so I don’t. LOL. If I did, I can assure all my sexuality would survive intact and continue to thrive! You seemingly can do the whole evaluation thing. If so, you are obviously (in at least one capacity) a deeper and more intricate person than I, and I commend you. But with that being said, it’s pretty darn easy for any of us to knock off points because of some out of control razor bumps or a messed up grill:-)
I will give you this, this type of dialogue is pretty taboo. But it didn’t start with us. For ages we’ve referred to even inanimate things that we find pleasing to the eye or endearing because of its utility (e.g. ships, planes & automobiles) in the feminine sense almost without exception. Wrongly or not, we {society} view beauty as a primarily and inherently feminine concept. Many men–and I’ll throw myself out there again–including I, but definitely not all, are just hard wired that way. I can’t be reverse engineered, and quite honestly, the status quo is just fine by me.

No rhyme or reason, I just went off of instinct and vibe. Though after reviewing my choices, I think for the women, their smile had a lot to do with it…and possibly breastses, but who can really say…It’s two dimensional….but yeah, uno and dos…there is simply something off with their smiles.
After some sleep and eating my omelette this morning, we need more variety in the women. I’m notoriously bad in articulating skin tone and frequently describe folks by saying “She is a couple shades darker/lighter then you”…, but it seems like the dark skinned chicks ain’t get no love?
Smiles factored in heavily, as well as decolletage displayed. Also, I’m not a fan of make-up. Seriously, if you look like a different person when you put on make up and it’s part of your daily routine…that’s not really not my style. Make up is meant to accentuate natural beauty, not hide it.
#3 just has a sweet and innocent vibe to her, if a bit insecure…like she would just need some simple encouragement/reassurances.
#4 would have been my top choice if she was wearing glasses. She seems self assured while maintaining a distinctly feminine quality.
#5′s big a*s smile is what got her here…that and chicks 2, 3,4, 5 all have nice necks. The nape of a woman’s neck is important. #1 is just short cuz she’s covering up her neck.
#2 is wearing a bit too much makeup for my tastes, as is #1.
#1′s eye shadow rubs me the wrong way. I see chicks use waaay too much eye shadow or eye liner. Especially chicks who use yellow or pink eye shadow to match their outfit…unless you’re a cheerleader, a flag girl or a dancer…naw…just naw…also chicks who wear brightly colored lipstick…that kills me.
So yeah, my preference is for a much more natural looking woman….and depending on what perfume these chicks are wearing could affect my order as well… a delicious smelling woman gets a lot more leeway then one who’s not as delicious smelling.

Very interesting experiment. I’m curious to see the outcome. I’m a west coast lurker so by the time I get back the first results will be in. For my rankings I’m disregarding clothing and accessories and just concentrating on the physical attractiveness. I’ve also tried to disregard that I’m familiar with some of the individuals. The exception being Lenny who is fine and will always be fine to me (even though this is a jacked up picture of him) so he automatically gets the #1 spot. I had a harder time with the men because I’m not really attracted to 5, 1 or 3 so I would need 5 shots to do 5, a couple more to do 1 and the whole bottle to do 3 so that’s how they ended up where they did.

From years of having these discussions with my husband, I’m betting the men will rank the women 43251. While I look at the face, symmetrics, teeth, general appearance; I know that my husband stares at the breast and the shape of the hips. If he can’t see them, then he has to extrapolate from the data on hand. That is generally ALL that he is thinking about.
For my own ranking of the men, symmetricality plays a huge part in what I find attractive. So no odd lumps, bumps, or lazy eyes that may indicate a problem in the gene pool. Yes, I’ve already had all the kids I’m ever planning to have but am always alert to flags and markers indicating problems with the DNA. Yes, Darwinism can be cruel.

This one was hard for me b/c I think these women are pretty equal when it comes to their level of attractiveness. As much as I wanted to pick the brown-skinned woman first and not play into the belief that “light is right” I didn’t make her my number one choice. This impacts how we rank. Plus, the picture quality between the samples are too varied(Glamour shots vs polaroid instant camera). There is no way you will come close to getting unbiased results. I know this isnt a serious research attempt on your part, but i’m just saying, these factors will definitely skew your results big time if you were truly looking to get some level of accuracy…even if it for sh*ts and giggles.

#2 (women) has great facial symmetry, and all of her features compliment each other. I’ve also seen her, head to toe, and she has realistic curves. Honestly, the rest can be thrown in a bag, shaken up and dumped out in any order.
#3 (men) looks like he would have beautiful teeth and a gorgeous smile…plus, he looks like he might have some height and that clothes would hang nicely on him. Again, he has great facial symmetry.

i’m particularly partial to natural hair (isnt this yaya from ANTM?) and darker skin, so 1 wins almost by default for me–4 was next more because of the picutre itself, she looks business oriented and comfortable at the same time, her face is alright and there isnt much to tell what her body’s lookin like-but she appears to be someone i could see having a conversation with–3 is in the middle because she looks fit and like a home girl, but the only thing the picture ascentuates is her breast…perky but not large, and her hair doesnt look real–2 was next mainly because i just like her better than 5–and 5 was last because its not a good picture, you cant even see her entire face, not a good pic for assessment purposes.

It’s funny how many women don’t get the attraction to Number 3, or Bria Myles as she’s been exposed.
Before I even googled her name, I thought her smile made her stand out. Like several cats have said, her smile and face and package looked kinda of innocent, and as a man, it’s been my experience that guys value innocent, pretty chicks. Now, we also dig chicks who exude sexiness like Jim Jones exudes funk, but innocent pretty broads are at the top of the totem pole. When you add in her body, which is freaking AMAZING, well, she should be the headliner for this list bar none.
Also, I’m shocked that so many women like Lenny Kravitz despite the fact that he has a Forrest Whitaker, or lazy eye. I would think that a dude with an obvious physical imperfection like that would not be so universally loved but obviously I know nothing about what women like.

1- I love her hair and smile. Even though she’s wearing makeup, she doesn’t appear “made up,” which indicates to me that she’s naturally beautiful anyway. Also to be honest, she probably looks the most like me so I’m not surprised I picked her

2 – Looks a little older, so as a young guy (that looks really young or so I’m told) that’s a bit of a turn off. I don’t want to be dating someone that looks like she could be my mother. But I dig the hair.

2 – Light skinned dude with even features. Clean cut. Looks kind of Swizz Beats-esque. Physically in shape. Also, holding a ball and wearing a jersey which through my awesome powers of deduction I figure he’s an NBA player of some kind.
I assume women will like that as well.
5 – (It’s becoming increasingly hard to describe what I think (physically) makes guys attractive to women, so bear with me)
He looks like the type of cat that I wouldn’t be upset to see with my sister. The blazer/shirt combo implies that he has at least decent taste in clothes.
Though the earrings, and absurdly thin mustache give him an air of “prettiness.”
Get rid of them.
3 – I’m going to take a wild stab at this one and guess that homie is a model, which implies at least a mild degree of “zestiness.” Which is weird because that runs counter to his very masculine face.

He has a real “natural” vibe going on.

He probably gets more butt than all the other guys on this list combined.
