***in no particular order***
1. “today was a good day”, ice cube (directed by f. gary gray)
***”today…” makes the cut for its matter of fact realness and simplicity, despite the fact that there’s no way in hell that o’shea’s 5’3 ass earned a “triple double” anywhere other than a seven foot nerf hoop***
2. “shadowboxin/4th chamber”, method man, rza, gza, ghostface killa, killah priest (directed by gza)
***easily my favorite video of all-time, and, in my opinion, the second best hip-hop vid ever made. if i had to rank em, “stan” would be 1st, “4th chamber/shadowboxing” would be 2nd, and “gravel pit” would be 2522nd***
3. “passin me by”, pharcyde
***the vid that served as the “how to pursue unproportionately attractive women, get played by them, then lament the entire female species” template for thousands of impressionable male hip-hop fans around the country. strangely, at least 37 percent of them ended up pledging kappa***
4. “stan”, eminem (directed by phil atwell and dr. dre)
***if you found dido extremely attractive in this vid, does that mean you have a thing for brits or pregnant chicks? nevermind, don’t answer that question***
5. “retrospect for life”, common sense and lauryn hill (directed by lauryn hill)
***the main reason why common’s banned from planned parenthood’s around the country***
6. “sky is the limit”, notorious b.i.g. and 112 (directed by spike jonze)
***would have rivaled “stan” as the best video of all-time if they included a scene with the kid biggie catching the kid faith and the kid tupac taking shots of louie off the stomach of the kid charlie baltimore***
7. “scenario”, a tribe called quest featuring leaders of the new school (directed by jim swaffield)
***my older sister cried when q-tip got got at the beginning of “poetic justice”. i didn’t.***
8. “dangerous”, busta rhymes (directed by hype williams)
***i’ve never smoked weed before. but, if i ever do, i want to smoke the sh*t hype and busta were obviously on when they thought up this video***
9. “the rain”, missy elliot, (directed by hype williams)
***along with mailboxes, cat litter, raw salmon, and camilla parker bowles, the image of missy in this video is what i think about during sex if i’m getting too excited and need something drastic to unexcite me***
10. “street dreams”, nas (directed by hype williams)
***was i the only one who had friends so dumb that they swore “casino” was inspired by the “street dreams” vid and not the other way around?***
11. “da crossroads”, bone thugs n harmony (directed by michael martin)
***i dont know what’s more amazing: how popular bone thugs n harmony were in the mid-90′s, the fact that millions of men across the county openly stanned for a group featuring four singing ass n*ggas with hair like sallie richardson in “posse”, or how unbelievably quickly they fell off***
12. “shake it fast”, mystical (directed by little x)
***insert perfunctory joke about mystical, shaking it fast, and prison showers***
although i know i’m right, i’m still contractually obligated to ask: did i miss anything?
—the champ
Ok, “Scenario” is still to this day my shiznit! But you forgot about Pete Rock and CL Smooth – “They Reminisce Over You” and Busta’s “Woo Hah – Got You All in Check”
@RedBeanzNRice w/Neckbones, I am more of a fan of Busta’s put ya hands where ya eyes can see..
Thats my shyt!!!! or
What its gonna be with him and Janet….
@shay_d_lady,
loved “put your hands…”
hated “what’s it gonna be…” (song and video)
@RedBeanzNRice w/Neckbones, I love that saxaphone in Reminisce over you… Now I must go youtube it. lol
@RedBeanzNRice w/Neckbones, I actually think that the song for “T.R.O.Y.” is better than the video. I feel that same way about Ice Cube’s “Today Was A Good Day”. “Check Yo Self” was a much better video.
@Panama Jackson,
I don’t even remember the video for T.R.O.Y, but that song? Always.
@miss t-lee, neither do I, and it’s my favorite hip-hop song ever.
@miss t-lee,
i do, just because for a two year span, there was a 28% chance that if you turned on rap city at any random moment, that vid would be playing
@Panama Jackson,
Yeah, Ice Cube’s joint wasn’t really a good video. Maybe I’m just partial to the video for T.R.O.Y. cause I like lookin’ at CL Smooth and those sexy lips, lol.
@RedBeanzNRice w/Neckbones, you know, CL Smooth doesnt get enough credit for being one of the few rappers who actually never talked about sh*t in any of his rhymes.
you all think I’m random, just go back and listen to CL Smooth’s verses on any album.
@RedBeanzNRice w/Neckbones,
i went to hip-hop karaoke one night at the knitting factory in nyc one night and saw a dude perform scenario remix all by himself, he knew every.single.word.for.everyone’s.verse. it was hilarious and admirable simultaneously
…i’ll also have you know that upon entrance to this festivity there was a white girl on stage performing “ms. fat booty” oh the irony.
@Carver The Great!,
“there was a white girl on stage performing “ms. fat booty” oh the irony.”
That’s hilarious! She musta thought she was Coco.
@RedBeanzNRice w/Neckbones,
That’s hilarious! She musta thought she was Coco.
if thats the case, the title should have been “ms surgically enhanced booty thats only really phat she bends over or when you look at it through a fish eye lens”
@The Champ,
That’s a long azz title.
Champ, you say it ain’t weed, but ya gots to be smokin on sumthin… or at least when you came up with this list and cross ranking. i’ma let it marinate before offering a few alternate selections.
I will grant you that Busta-bus & Missy always have the hottest vids…
@bittersweet’s baby,
Indeed…thanks to Hype Williams and Dave Meyers!
@K to the…,
Hype Williams could make a video of a Campbell’s soup can and it would go triple platinum.
@RedBeanzNRice w/Neckbones, whicih is why he cant get a job these days huh…nobody’s eating motherf*cking campbells.
@Panama Jackson,
You irritate me.
@RedBeanzNRice w/Neckbones, you love me.
@bittersweet’s baby,
i’ma let it marinate before offering a few alternate selections.
marinate deez
@The Champ,
“marinate deez”
They’re gonna be extra salty…
@Cheekie,
“Chocolate Salty B@lls” (c) Chef from South Park
Interesting picks, Champ. If we’re talking strictly videos, I have to say Outkast B.O.B. It really is a visually interesting video(to me)…and I’m not talking about the females in the vid.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q35PZ8_uFnI
I’ll think of some others once the sun rises.
@N.I.A. naturally,
and by agree i mean…those are some interesting choices Champ.
and eff moderation!!
@N.I.A. naturally,
That BOB video was hot.
@N.I.A. naturally, yeah, B.O.B. is definitely one of the better videos given how creative they got with it.
Plus, R.I.P. Bowen Homes! Westside Zone 1.
@N.I.A. naturally,
Wooo – Andre makes me wanna.
@RedBeanzNRice w/Neckbones, …you wanna leave the one you’re with and start a new relationship with Usher?
@RedBeanzNRice w/Neckbones,
girl, me too. me too.
@N.I.A. naturally,
this is a good choice. i actually forgot about this vid until panama mentioned it to me yesterday
@The Champ, and you STILL didn’t include it.
lol.
@Panama Jackson,
smh @ The Champ for not heeding your sage advice.
Nice choices. I was just listening to 4th Chamber!
I think the Pharcyde’s “Drop” video(also directed by Spike Jonze) was better than Passing Me By, for the simple fact that the whole thing was shot backwards…Although Passing Me By was the much better song.
Also, I always liked the beginning of Wu-Tang’s “Triumph” video, mainly due to Inspectah Deck rhyming on the side of the building like Spider Man. The rest of the video is kind of overdone, but the beginning is great! “I bomb atomically. Socrates’ philosophies and hypotheses can’t define how I be droppin’ these mockeries. Lyrically perform armed robberies. Flee with the lottery. Possibly they spotted me” LOL
@ListenToLeon,
yes, Triumph. me likey that one
@ListenToLeon, I agree with you on “Drop”. Champ and I had that convo b/c I think as a video, “Drop” was totally dope, but “Passin’ Me By” is the far better song.
Also, ain’t it amazing how Inspectah Deck’s entire career at this point can be defined by that one verse, possibly one of the best verses in hiphop history?
Seriously, does anybody give a sh*t about anything else he’s done aside from his world famous, “…to kick the truth, to the young black youth…” off of “C.R.E.A.M.”???
@Panama Jackson,
Seriously, does anybody give a sh*t about anything else he’s done aside from his world famous, “…to kick the truth, to the young black youth…” off of “C.R.E.A.M.”???
you know whats funny? despite the fact that he’s had an ho-hum solo career, hes responsible for the best and most memorable verse in wu’s three most popular songs. “triumph”, “wu-tang clan aint nuthin to f*ck with”, and “c.r.e.a.m.”.
i can’t think 0f any analogies to make with that
@ListenToLeon, Good choice!
@ListenToLeon,
Also, I always liked the beginning of Wu-Tang’s “Triumph” video, mainly due to Inspectah Deck rhyming on the side of the building like Spider Man. The rest of the video is kind of overdone, but the beginning is great!
this is definitely true
with the drop video, put it in the same boat as “99 problems”…vids that were trying a bit too hard to be too creative.
@The Champ, you dont think it worked with “drop”???
If memory serves me correct, I think “Scenario” was directed by the AUC homie Spike.
@Monk,
i did some research on the vid before i posted it that downplayed that myth. i guess because he was actually in the video, people assumed he directed it as well
hmmmm… I actually DON’T disagree with you Champ. I had to step back from thinking about the top hip hop SONGS and think about the Vids.
But you missed
Busta Rhymes- Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See.
I only say that because I love Coming to America so much and this vid cracked me UP. Maybe its in the top 15?
@blackberry molasses, I agree… Busta made some good videos… I liked Pass the Couvoisier (I know I butchered that spelling), too.
@Nicki Sunshine,
Yeah, that’s a good video. And also because it reminded me of how much Pharrell looked like my daddy in that video. lmfao
Don’t this hit make my people wanna jump, jump!
@Cheekie, this is a song that is only good in the club or when watching the video.
its too hype to be a song you just listen to on a random tuesday.
tuesdays are best reserved for Bach.
@Panama Jackson,
LOL @ Bach.
But yeah, that song is definitely for hype mode. Like, I can’t be listening to that while I’m at the library or something.
@Cheekie, Pharrell looks like your daddy???? (wwooooooowwwwwww). He’s a cutie.
@Nicki Sunshine,
He kinda reminds me of him. A younger version, I guess. But in that particular video he really made me think of him.
When I look at younger photos of him when he was in the Navy and those squinty, beady eyes (I got ‘em too…especially when I smile. lol) … it’s weird. Head shaped like him too.
@blackberry molasses, yeah, I think “Put Your Hands…” was a dope ass video as well. That’s the difficulty, for the most part, the songs leave lasting impressions and the videos do not.
@Panama Jackson,
I actually also liked Eminem and Dre’s “Guilty Conscience”
Nice use of the surround camera technology from “The Matrix”
@BlackBerry Molasses,
I actually also liked Eminem and Dre’s “Guilty Conscience”
Nice use of the surround camera technology from “The Matrix”
yeah, this was a great vid as well
@BlackBerry Molasses,
*nods* Definitely.
***if i were ranking these,… “make em say uhh” would be 321st***
lmao
Oh and I would add Dre’s Nothin But A G Thang to the list.
@Neenay,
***if i were ranking these,… “make em say uhh” would be 321st***
lmao
lol, just so everyone doesn’t think neenay is nuts, she’s referring to a comment i wrote in the entry before i edited it out
welcome and sh*t (i think), btw
Man you gotta have “ill be that” by Redman..
I mean the scene where that chick hits the car in that bicycle still makes me cry laughing till this day….
@shay_d_lady,
and the team chunk aerobics!
*pumps fist*
@shay_d_lady, that’s what he said!!!!!
that is one of the best videos ever as far as entertainment value.
plus the chick on the bike as ohsofine. and to go out like that/!?
traaaaaaagedy.
@shay_d_lady, wait…was this the video that starts off with the PLUS SIZED dancers? i am going to youtube right now….
@shay_d_lady,
redman is easily the most underrated hip-hop artist ever. so underrated in fact that i forgot completely about this vid even though he’s one of my favorite rappers
@shay_d_lady,
*nods enthusiastically*
Don’t really have an opinion on the videos [except to co-sign that Busta and Missy's videos were always dope].
However, I must say that I just listened to Missy’s The Rain and realized that I’ve never been so confused in my life. I just realized that she’s not talking about a DAMN thing yet that song’s raw as hell LOL
@Tyrone, if you listen to most of Missy’s songs you’ll realize that she’s not talking about jack sh*t. she specializes in interesting nothingness.
@Panama Jackson, “if you listen to most of Missy’s songs you’ll realize that she’s not talking about jack sh*t. she specializes in interesting nothingness.”
lol. This is very true.
@Panama Jackson,
“she specializes in interesting nothingness.”
Oooh, perfect! This should be the definition of her name in Websters:
Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliot. n. – she who specializes in interesting nothingness.
Hey, y’all.
@Champ: Good picks. I love “Retrospect for Life”.
Not sure these would be considered the dopest but other hip-hop videos I liked are (in no particular order):
1. ODB’s “I Got Cha Money”
2. #1 made me think of Jay-Z’s “Who You Wit” Sidebar: Loved Sprung when I was in college. Remember that movie? LOL.
3. Tupac & Dre’s “California Love”
4. Snoop’s “Who Am I”
5. Outkast’s “Hey Ya”
6. DMX’s “Ruff Ryder’s Anthem” or “What’s My Name”…don’t judge me.
7. Fugees’ “Ready Or Not”
8. Lil Kim’s “Crush on You”
9. The Firm’s “Phone Tap”
10. Junior Mafia’s “Get Money”
@Shawnta`, I love DMX.., pre all the way crackhead DMX and i was trying to think of that little kim joint.. Crush on y ou was a hawt video
I also liked Ghetto Boys my minds playing tricks on you
@Shawnta`,
Yeah, I think the Fugees ready or not video is one of my favorite videos ever.
@Omar, it would be on of mine but that’s when L-Boogie had lil boobies. i hated that shirt she had on.
yes that ruined the video for me.
actually, i’m thinking of fu-ge-la. i mean she still had lil boobies, but they weren’t on display so much. two thumbs up.
@Shawnta`,
these are all good choices and sh*t, especially “get money”.
actually, to be honest, i remember being highly disappointed by the ready or not video. just seemed over produced to me
I agree w/y’all on the Busta & Missy videos…always creative & entertaining.
also Summertime and Parents Just dont Understand by Fresh Prince
@shay_d_lady,
Yeah, Summertime is very summery. Gets ya in that Q-ing mood. Just wanna slap a rib on the grill on instinct.
I prefer “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See” by Busta.
Champ, are you still up looking for video links? LOL.
@Ms. Hall,
up deez
*”Hurt” by T.I. feat. Alfamega and Busta Rhymes
*”Shoulder Lean” by Young Dro feat. T.I.
*”1st Time” by Yung Joc feat. Marques Houston and Trey Songz
*”Dunn Dunn” by Shawty Lo
*”Dey Know” by Shawty Lo
*”Bubble Gum” by Rasheeda
*”Circles” by Crime Mob
*”Zoom” by Lil’ Boosie feat. Yung Joc
*”Laffy Taffy” by D4L
*”Magic Chic” by Do Or Die feat. R.Kelly
*”Over Here” by Young Jeezy feat. Bun B
*”Dope Boyz” by T.I.
Not saying that they’re the best, but these videos are dear to me and shyt.
@Monk,
Flag on the play! What?? Outside of Shoulder Lean I don’t recall nann one of these videos. I do, however, remember the worst use of a sample ever ( Crime Mob I’m looking at you) but the song is just as forgettable as the video. Bless your heart though. I am going to go ahead and assume these are your “guilty pleasures” vs. actual G.O.A.T videos.
@Nola Darling, you should probably ask him why they hold a special place in his heart though…lol.
no, seriously.
you never know who you’re talking to…
@Panama Jackson,
I think I just had a reaction to seeing Shawty Lo’s name. I keep seeing the video that was posted on VSB a few weeks ago with him Oj & Gucci. That video makes me happy and sad all at once.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMnwhhnnr-I
@Nola Darling, oh i feel you, but since he wont’ say it…
Monk is the director of all of those videos…
@Nola Darling,
It’s all good Nola. It’s some damn good videos on that list there though if I do say so myself (and I do). You can check ‘em on youtube or vimeo.com/presidential for more.
Knowledge is power.
@Monk, i’m sure they do. LOL.
it’s the President!
@Monk,
I don’t think I’ve seen the vid for “Bubble Gum”.
I liked the song though.
@Monk, I don’t think I’ve even heard any of these songs. Makes me feel old as dust.
@MaiTai,
Don’t feel old, no one watches music videos any more…well, at least they claim they don’t.
Good list! Some other videos I like are…
Fugees – “Ready or Not”
Nas – “One Mic”
Lil Kim – “Crush”
Tupac – “California Love”
Kanye West – “Jesus Walks”
@Leila,
I looooove me some Fugees. And I liked Nas’ “One Mic”, too. Good addition.
And Kanye’s Jesus’ Walks was pretty cool because of his wilin’ out in church. That seizure-arse dance he did always kills me.
@Cheekie,
Methinks he was channeling Adam Levine (the Maroon 5 lead sanger) in that. When Adam flails about, I can’t help but chortle.
@Beez,
LMAO @ channeling Adam Levine. Yeah, the Adam Levine seizure is a special case indeed.
@Cheekie,
That seizure-arse dance he did always kills me.
maybe my favorite music award moment of all-time is when he’s performing that song with yolanda adams, and they both do the “seizure dance” during the chorus.
@The Champ,
OMG! I forgot about that. Wow, yes that was indeed, classic.
@Leila, \
California Love… YES. Because it was all “Madd Maxx”. I’m all about post-apocalyptic drag racing across deserts and shyt.
@Leila,
I too like the “One Mic” video, but I have a sidebar about that song that troubles me, (I’m special, sue me) . In one line he says a fiend drops his Heineken… fiends don’t be drinking no imports. that is all. back to our regularly scheduled program,
@Naturally Alise,
leave it to you to take issue with that one part of an otherwise flawless song. Okay, maybe not flawless…
but still. He was tryna make a rhyme? Would you have felt better about “Fiend drops his Mad Dogg 20/20?” Nah, patna.
@Naturally Alise, not true. i got a few dopefiend cousins (westside of ATL stand up) and all they drink are corona’s and heinekins. like these ninjas look at bud light like, “who brought the piss?”
Common has some pretty good videos. My pics from him are Go, Testify, Come Close, and the video he had with Alicia Keys I Want You.
The Roots – Never Do & The Next Movement
Q-Tip – Vivrant Thang, & Getting Up
Meothd Man – You’re All I Need to Get By and Break Ups to Make Ups
@Nola Darling,
Forgot a couple:
Goodie Mob- Cell Therapy & Soul Food
Pharcyde apparently has a hit factory cause I’m thinking about Can’t Keep Running Away
@Nola Darling, Cell Therepy was a classic video definite cosign over here
@Nola Darling,
Soul Food! Yes!! I remember being a wee lass and being hyped for Cee-Lo’s part, because of his distinctive voice:
*ahem*
I keep a helping of fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, and collard greens, too big for my jeans…
*b-girl stance*
@Beez,
Good look! D*mn, I didn’t think females are up on it like that. Learn something everyday…
Bond.
@Beez,
I always liked the 1365 Wichita drive part…lol
@Nola Darling, “The Roots – Never Do & The Next Movement”
YES!
(great list though, Champ!)
@Nola Darling,
Yess…
how could I, a Philly girl, forget about the Legendary Roots crew!?
Both those vids cracked me up. Esp “What they do” with the captions. iDied.
@blackberry molasses,
I love that video!! Time to hit up youtube so i can watch it.
@Nola Darling, What They Do is definitely a classic video off of a nearly classic album (though it can’t touch Do You Want More?!!!??!).
Question though…what exactly makes those Common video’s good? And I’m actually just wondering b/c none of them particularly stand out for their creativity or anything, with the possible exception of Come Close and only b/c the chick was deaf. It went from ubergay to special and just mostly gay. And the gay came from Common’s threads which are usually mostly all gay.
@Nola Darling,
Common does have a nice collection of videos. I loved the colors in “Go”.
@Cheekie,
that song was gay
@The Champ,
Well, you asked for it:
Gay deez.
Seriously, though..I think it was more for the ladies. Hush!
@Cheekie, i dont think common has a good collection of videos. i even think retrospect for life sucked.
down with common!
@Panama Jackson,
“down with common!”
*side-eye*
Hmmm…interesting selection I must say. Champ, like someone mentioned earlier greatest videos to greatest songs that’s a tough one. I watched videos so much growing up that I can’t think of less than 50! But, I will play along:
Night of the Living Bassheads-Public Enemy(classic)
Nothing But a “G” Thang- Dr. Dre(changed the way videos were done)
It’s a Doggy Dogg World-Snoop(wigs and 70′s Gangstas classic)
One More Chance and B.I.G. Poppa-B.I.G.(can’t choose so they both go on the list)
Walk This Way-Run DMC(two icons linking up)
Freaks Come Out at Night-Whodini(c’mon now breakdancing)
Ruff Ryders Anthem-DMX(hot song new type of video)
It’s Your/Older Godz-Wu-Tang(sick truly sick video and that fire beat I really miss hip hop when they were on top)
Make Em Say Ugh-Master P(shiny, fun, tight video)
All About the Benjamins-Puff Daddy(Lox, Lil Kim when they were at least trying to rap, beat was sick, nice concept, B.I.G verse at the end with the beat change:smh: awesome)
Luchini-Camp Lo(told y’all I watch rap videos!!)
I Ain’t Having That-Heltah Skeltah(I AM HIP HOP I’ll wait for y’all to youtube it…yeah that’s that fire)
Run-Cappadonna(Fire song fire video ’nuff said)
I’m all hype now and I need to get a few hours of sleep that ain’t gonna happen so I’m getting on the PS3 til I go to work at 8 look what y’all done made do. I left out at least 20 more videos but I comfy with this list and I’ll match it up to anybody’s
p.s. I’ve been catching up on the last 2 weeks of post and y’all need Jeebus
@Gainesville Green,
“It’s Your/Older Godz-Wu-Tang(sick truly sick video and that fire beat I really miss hip hop when they were on top)”
Wasn’t really feeling the video, but no doubt that beat is STLL hot.
@Gainesville Green,
I co-sign with One Mo Chance, one of the first vids the featured so many stars in one joint, its was sexy, sophisticated even, and highly flyly LOL stylized without being mysogonistic and trife…
BBC I got uyou oepn Remix and LeLFuer LA FLAh Exo
@Gainesville Green, you have some good choices on here. especially the “Doggy Dogg World” video which was a classic inevery possible way.
I also posited to Champ that “Make Em Say Ugh” was a great video b/c the hypeness and overdone nature of it perfectly fit the song.
@Gainesville Green,
oh how i love vbs, where i have learned so much about rap and hip hop videos…i mean who knew there was even such things as videos that didn’t show tig ole bittys and ye olde round browns…
and PE night of the living basshead is funny! but wasn’t flav high in this video?
@collegebunni, flav was…but get this, there was a time when he wasn’t a crack head.
@Gainesville Green,
“Freaks Come Out at Night-Whodini(c’mon now breakdancing)”
Whoo! That’s the song.
And the title is scientifically true. At night, freaks are more prone to come out.
@Gainesville Green,
you have some good choices here and sh*t
@Gainesville Green,
Heltah Skeltah-is that the one where during the hook it goes “this is the bcc..” they were dope, good look.
Biggie-I forgot about Warning and One More chance, good look…man, I’m slippin’
From a historical perspective you have to include Tupac’s I get around because it laid the groundwork for videos prominently featuring video um vixens, and then of course Jay Z Big Pimpin for officially ushering in the era, also known as the golden age of supahead
@Dorian G.,
Tupac’s I get around because it laid the groundwork for videos prominently featuring video um vixens
was this before or after “rump shaker”?
@The Champ,
It was after, but my counter to this argument is that the video for Rump Shaker had to be women shaking their rumps.
I get around could have gone a few different directions and Pac chose to have scantily dressed women as the focus of the video to show how much of a pimp he was. It laid the groundwork for all future vids IMO cuz rappers still do that today.
I agreed with all of them except “Sky’s The Limit”.
What about the “Triumph” vid?
Busta & Hype always had some wild arse videos.Makes me miss the days of actually watching videos. Especially the summers back when BET showed nothing but vids for what was it like 6 hours during the day?
@miss t-lee, you don’t think Sky’s The Limit was a classic video?
It’s the first time kids were used to prominently wehre they weren’t the actual performers. And it was an actual good video.
@Panama Jackson,
Nah…wasn’t feeling it. At all.
@Panama Jackson,
What about Slick Rick – It’s A Boy?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjNbyyhZ_No
Nelly – tip drill
@Sankofi,
Greatest.Video.Ever.interesting.Has anyone noticed, that with a few exceptions, the vids are mostly mid-90s? Is this saying something about the current state of hip-hop and its videos?
Or is it just as an ummm more mature crowd our favorites just skew that way?
@Maximillian,
B for $1000, Alex
@Maximillian, maybe it’s a little bit of both
@Maximillian,
yeah its says alot, it says the “formula” most mofos use now-a-days is old, stale. and tired serisouly lacks imagination and creativity……..I love the vids that tell stories without being bombarded by T&A and cars and jewels on a beach or in mansion party scenes LMAO
@Maximillian,
*singing*
Maximilliaan, Maximilliaan.
hhah
@Maximillian, I actually think it has more to do with the age of folks here. Think about it…Hype ushered in the double screen sh*t in the 2000s and it was so insane when it dropped. Think about Slim Thugs “I Ain’t Hearda That” video. Dope all around.
Or even some of Kanye’s videos are great.
It’s just old head Fridays around here.
lol.
@Maximillian, it just means champ is taking back his “back in the day aint sh**” statement.
the 90s rule!
@Maximillian,
I.miss.the.90′s.
That is all.
@BlackBerry Molasses,
Word.
@Maximillian,
Has anyone noticed, that with a few exceptions, the vids are mostly mid-90s? Is this saying something about the current state of hip-hop and its videos?
Or is it just as an ummm more mature crowd our favorites just skew that way?
its a bit of both. while my heart obviously lies with circa 1993-2000 hip-hop, objectively speaking i do think videos were just better back then. i mean, other than kanye, which popular artists now are trying to push the creative envelope in that regard?
@The Champ, puffy and soulja boy. and bow wow.
I got to the end of the list and all I could think about was… What the hell happened to Mystical?
@MilkandCookies,
He’s currently in the Louisiana Prison System.
@miss t-lee,
I don’t know why but this reply cracked me up.
@Dorian G.,
I laughed a little while I was typing it.
*LOL*
@MilkandCookies, around here we like to refer to him as Mr. Rape-on-Tape.
@Panama Jackson,
word.
Same for half of Bone Thugs N’ Harmony **sad face**
@MilkandCookies,
The entire situation is very mystical.
My contribution for today:
Tip Drill- Nelly
(No misogyny.)
@Slim Jackson,
Of course you would, Slimmy. Of course. lol
Ok, now that I am awake with a clear head (gawd i love martinis…maybe too much), I must say the Champs list is definitely decent. I’ll add…
Mo’ Money, Mo’ Problems–Biggie, feat. Mase and Puff
Crush on You–Lil Kim
Outkast–Prototype
@N.I.A. T.G.I.F.,
“Crush on You–Lil Kim”
That was such a fun video, especially with all the colorful wigs.
I know you seen me on the video….TRUEEEEE.
@Cheekie,
Crush on you was the anthem of our African American Club HBCU Tour ’95. That and Hypnotize.
We had a 2 coach buses and the bus drivers were cool as shyt. Let us blast CD’s on the bus.
One of the best weeks of my life. **memories**
@N.I.A. T.G.I.F., Mo Money Mo Problems at last!
You really not going to include the video that DEFINED a whole era in hip-hop?
Throw in Victory, just for the £££ shit was on some demolition man shit.
I agree with these selections, and I just wanted to say, in regards to #10, passwords to all my freak parties are always “Gumbo”.
Sadly, I have miscreants and lowlife women rather than the likes of Melyssa Ford and Sincerely, but hell… I get what I pay for.
That is all… I’m actually doing WORK today.
@Dante_Alexander,
Who the h3ll works on a FRIDAY?
@BlackBerry Molasses,
Those who don’t work Monday-Thursday because they read VSB all day.
There are a great number of us, actually.
I’m still leaving early. I have to give out small papers with the word “Gumbo” written on them to beautiful big breasted women starting at 2:30 PM.
@Dante_Alexander,
I’m still leaving early. I have to give out small papers with the word “Gumbo” written on them to beautiful big breasted women starting at 2:30 PM.
honestly, i’d pay someone to film themselves walking the streets and handing small slips of paper with “gumbo” written on it to every good looking women they see.
@The Champ,
I’ll have the vid for you shortly.
[Ace Boogie]“I want my fahdallahs on Friday.”[Ace Boogie]
ok before I even read any comments gotta add one off the break, and then I’ll go back and read, cosign and dispute LOL…….
Xzibit….What you see is what get now…video was diff but NICE, camera angles, the action sequences, how one thing lead directly into another and they pretty much kept it moving!!!
I always like that video.
@OrangeStar616,
That is one of my favorite videos ever… it was just so clever and sh*t… and then when he had to go back to the store after going through all that, classic.
@Naturally Alise,..right LOL….
@OrangeStar616, good one. That video was so well conceived and orchestrated.
it was like a BET Uncut video, only the exact opposite. now that’s a list worth debating…
BEST.BET.UNCUT.VIDEO.EVER.???
@Panama Jackson,
BEST.BET.UNCUT.VIDEO.EVER.???
top five
1. “tip drill”
2. “p*ssy poppin”
3. “time for freakin”
4. the extended uncut version of “right derr”
5. the vid whose name i cant remember with those cats from alaska
@The Champ, Wait a sec…you forgot that song… “I Ain’t Got No Panties On” (on the dance floor). I think it was joker the bailsbondsman or some other feeble rapper.
@The Champ,
Time for freakin, time to come clean with them tight azz jeans, girl you know what i mean…
Bongos, __________, and them freaky azz hoe$
@The Champ, or the great
“tell me what that thing smell like”
and you’re talking aobut joker the bailbondsman.
i believe black jesus was the author of “what that thing smell like”
I’m feel some type of way because my favorite video is not on the list. Big Daddy Kane “ain’t no half stepping”. No special effects was needed. The boxing ring scene was the illest.
@Eff yo couch, it was a product of its time.
so basically what i’m trying to say is that it sucked.
Though I havent watched videos in a long time here is my short list:
*List probably ranks in the 100′s*
Lauryn Hills ” Doo Wop” I like the transition between two different time periods. The fashion and hairstyles were cool.
Jay-Z “99 Problems”
Puffy and Mase “Mo’ Money Mo’ problems” The suits they were wearing were weird. I like the fan effect.
TLC “Waterfalls” Very positive video. I think this video may have forced some teens to think about their choices. This video made me ask my cousin what HIV/AIDS was.
@Ivy St., hmm…you have some very good pics.
though, and like i told El Champerino, i think the 99 problems video wasnt as good as the hype surrounding it. i mean it was good and all, but i really don’t ever need to see it again.
L-Boogie’s joint was hot too.
@Ivy St.,
“Puffy and Mase “Mo’ Money Mo’ problems” The suits they were wearing were weird. I like the fan effect.”
I know they were HOT AS HELL in those Now-n-Later pleather suits, but Lord knows I loved this video.
@Cheekie,
Me too.
*throws my p(rollie) to the sky, waves it side to side, and keeps my hand high*
@Beez,
I used to always love the line, “Bigger than the city lights down in Times Square
Yeah, yeah yeah”
The way he said “yeah, yeah, yeah” all deadpan while thrusting his crotch kilt me.
@Ivy St.,
Lauryn Hills ” Doo Wop” I like the transition between two different time periods. The fashion and hairstyles were cool.
this was a great vid
Mo Money defined a whole Era.. definetely up there.
You know whats interesting is thinking about the evolution of Hip Hop videos over the past 2 decades. I’ve long maintained that Hip Hop subject matter, ambassadors, and content has barely changed since the late 80′s. I remember being a pup and my older cousins social life pretty much consisted of getting f*cked up on weekends, smashing chicks, and chilling with friends. And they always had hip hop music to accompany them, and portray that lifestyle. Not much has changed over 20 years.
The music videos however have changed dramatically. From the early days like Eric B. and Rakim mixing it up at a show, to a lot of Native Tongues stuff like Souls of Mischief and Tribe, to chilling on the stoop with Wu Tang and Nas. Then Puff got shiny with it, and in the late 90′s the budgets got bigger and bigger, and the whole era of “Making the Video” really changed the way music videos were made, marketed, and promoted in hip hop. From about 1999-2003 everyone had a million dollar video, with a million dollar director, and possibly a couple million dollar actor cameos, and well paid/known video models. Most of the videos looked outstanding, even if they were cookie cutter in nature at that point. You had labels giving guys like Murphy Lee and Joe Buddens 750k to hire Hype Williams LOL! The music video became a promotional tool. Then when the money started to dry up and other, more efficient means of promotion came about (read: Social Networks), I think you’ve really seen a lull in music video quality. Without the glossy directors and the fancy and exotic sets and locations you’ve really seen how un-creative so called artist really are. Good videos are still being made though, as Kid Cudi’s Make Her Say is proving you don’t need a huge budget to make a good video.
@Dorian G., i think you’re right about the the 1999-2003 era when folks were killing themselves to make outstanding looking videos, even if they fell flat on actual style or whatever.
i often have wondered what happened to the super quality and creative videos. i mean there are some out there. every now and then rik cordero comes thru with an interesting video. but i think largely, people just aren’t creative like that anymore. look at the songs they’re making videos for. there’s really no room to get creative. the songs that get videos on say mtvjams are all the same song remixed 100 times.
unless its kanye or of that ilk, like the make em say, joint where they’ll get somebody who’ll at least think about it.
all the videos are either of opulence or of dumb lookin’ ninjas pretending to be opulent. when all the songs are called, “i got money” its hard to shoot a creative video.
@Dorian G., There’s no point in spending more money on the videos than the amount of records you’re going to sell. MTV does not even play videos anymore so that form of media is slowly becoming irrelevant. Sad cause I wanted to be a video director when I was 10 years old.
I love the “Elevators” video by Outkast and “BOB”, they were extended of what I believe an acid trip must be. Andre 3000 was Badu’ed as hell and it showed…
@Naturally Alise, you know, Elevators is an interesting video for so many reasons.
mostly cuz it inspired a whole bunch of us down south to start rocking them turbin like old woman hats.
i had a black one.
@Panama Jackson,
I will pay ANY PRICE for a pic of this. Really.
@BlackBerry Molasses,
For real. Let’s hold an e-auction. I’d make it rain to get a pic of this posted. Like, ya’ll should make a post with a pic of Panama in a old lady turbin and that’s it…the whole post would be the picture. Would be the most popular VSB post evah. Ya’ll would get 900 comments at least.
@Cheekie, you’ll never see this pic. mostly cuz i don’t have one. lol.
@Panama,
*pout*
LIES!
@Panama Jackson,
As long as when the BOB vid came out you didn’t rock Hawk/Animal Specials with no shirt on under, a platinum wig, and furry arse boots, you cool with me.
Emulation should only go SO far.
Arguably 12 of the best rap videos
Kool G Rap – On the Run
Xzibit – What You See Is What You Get
Nelly – Tip Drill
Eric B. and Rakim – Move the Crowd
Public Enemy – Night of the Living Baseheads
Raekwon – Ice Cream (I am still trying to find the chic Ghost was talkin to in that video)
LL Cool J – Jingling Baby
Ice Cube – Steady Mobbin
DMX – Ruff Ryder’s Anthem
Cypress Hill – How I Could Just Kill A Man
Oukast – The Way You Move( Shououtt to Ki-Toy, man she had EXTRA lift back there)
EPMD – You Gots To Chill
@Humble_One,
I forgot the Roots “Never Do”. That video was a good spoof of videos then and now.
@Humble_One, just a point of clarification, it’s called “what they do”.
@Humble_One, I can visualize most of these, major co-signage on “You gots to Chill”, in that ice house freezer whateva it was =DOPE
“Jingling Baby” that classic house party, one of the few LL joints I loved…
Move the Crowd and I aint no Joke…video juke box favs LOL, my fav joint by them is probably
LET THE RHYTHM HIT EM…ahhhh that was the joint SO hood dramatic, grimey……..
@OrangeStar616, i actually like, “so whatcha sayin’” more than “you gots to chill”
you know, i think i’m gonna go ahead and commit some hiphop blasphemy, but EPMD is SO overrated.
@Panama Jackson,
WHAT?
You don’t like EPMD?
* I did like the vid for “So Whatcha Sayin” as well.
@miss t-lee, nope. i think i only really liked “so whatcha sayin”
i’m pretty cool on EPMD.
@Panama Jackson ,
I think I dug them so much because my older brother played them non-stop…for a couple of years.
@Panama Jackson, over-rated don’t know, in the late 80′s early 90′s they def had a lane in the genre and drove in that mofo, I think the production on their early stuff like the entire Stricly Business CD, Redmans early stuff like Whut, classic sh*t indeed..even some of Keith Murrays efforts like “the most beautiful thing” etc…classic material…….over-rated in what way??
I liked the Bomb Sqaud, they brought a love for the art, unique elements, and sounds made a contribution to the genre when it was purer.
@OrangeStar616, i’m not saying i dont understand their place in hip-hop. perhaps overrated is the wrong word, i dont really care for them and i think mos tof their musis sucked. the outside production for redman and keith murray was cool though.
but i never loved t.h.e.m.
@Humble_One, Oukast – The Way You Move( Shououtt to Ki-Toy, man she had EXTRA lift back there)
HER LEGS ARE AMAZING!! I work out and picture my legs one day looking like hers!!
@Yaa,
Mayne, Ki Toy was super d duper tough in that video. Lawd ham MEEEEEEEEEEERCY!
@Humble_One,
Oukast – The Way You Move( Shououtt to Ki-Toy, man she had EXTRA lift back there)
i remember watching that with my dad, and him saying to himself “ok, that ass has to be fake”
The Lauryn Hill – “Sweetest Thing” video gets honorable mention for making a lot of us believe that that was actually Tupac running through the store.
@Omar,
i dont remember that vid and sh*t
@The Champ,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNajx1cD5T4
WHAT? No “Nuthin But A G thang”? Come on. this list is wack!!!
@Liz,
wack deez
@The Champ, if ever there was a term with so much potential.
damn I forgot all about “The Crossroads”. That video was amazing indeed.
@undressingHER,
Sure was.
@RedBeanzNRice w/Neckbones,
I love the thought behind it. But it looks budget as hell now.
Love all those, and still can quote line for line me some scenerio!
@Cynthia,
and still can quote line for line me some scenerio!
i double dog dare you to do it on our podcast and sh*t
A few videos by the ladies that I appreciated.
“On The Smooth Tip”~Sweet Tee
“Everybody Get Up”~Salt ‘n Pepa
“Yeah, Yeah, Yeah”~Oaktown 357
“Paper Thin”~MC Lyte
@miss t-lee,
“Everybody Get Up”~Salt ‘n Pepa
good choice and sh*t
@miss t-lee,
Sweet Tee (***shivers in excitement**) Lord knows my young arse wanted to do all kinds of explicit and sensual things to that woman. That was a dope song, I’ve been waiting for someone to use that Parliament sample since, but haven’t heard it.
Lyte = Dopest feMC argubly. Paper thin’s delivery, intro was ahead of it’s time. You could throw it on now and it would still resonate. What’s crazy is I remember when all of the older kids at the time wanted Jettas like in that video…
Oaktown 357 made me want to do Sean Michaels & Ron Hightower stuff to them…shout out to Oakland ladies (wink).
Salt N’ Pepa- Push It gets my vote.
Bond.
A lot of this is very subjective b/c what exactly makes something the best video? I know I’m being a stick in the mud but for the most part, a lot of videos…blow.
They don’t leave much impression or really have anything to do with the song.
As far as the list, I think a lot of those listed were good, though I think Check Yo’Self was a much better video than “it was a good day”.
I think Tupac’s “California Love” was a great video, as was “Drop”.
‘steady mobbin” – ice cube
“doggy dogg world” – snoop
“what they do” – roots
that brings up a point…the roots video for “what they do” is hands down one of the best videos ever. it fit the song, it was hilarious (if you got it), the captions, and most of all…
…it’s memorable.
i’m also gonna have to say that “belly” is the greatest music video of all time. it’s the longest, had the best camera shots,a nd had tyrin turner eating a banana and looking like the gayest version of himself ever.
*no, i do not consider Belly to be a movie. it s a music video. period.
@Panama Jackson,
“i’m also gonna have to say that “belly” is the greatest music video of all time. ”
If we going there “Belly” was upstaged by “Idilewild” which was movie AND music video and better at both.
@Omar, i don’t know about htat hombre. now Idlewild might be a better music video, but as a movie? Idlewild wasn’t more entertaining than belly.
for one, i get the impression that people involved in Idlewild, with the possible exception of Big Boi were taking themselves really seriously (btw, paula patton was a pretty bad actress in that movie).
Belly? shiiiiiiiiiet, it seems like folks just showed up the day before without having read the script and were like, yo, just tell me where to stand, i got this. increased the entertainment value at least 10-fold. plus, we have the world’s worst acress (t-boz) with the world’s most ignant line:
nas: we should go to africa?
t-boz: africa? that’s far.
got to love it.
Belly! Belly! Belly!
@Panama Jackson,
nas: we should go to africa?
t-boz: africa? that’s far.
got to love it.
LOL.
@Panama Jackson,
YES! One of my all-time faves.
Nas: “I got shot.”
@Panama Jackson,
“You a ill ninja… I like your STYLE, son.”
Everyone always loves DMX’s “Smell the fart” acting techniques, yet they forget he wasn’t acting.
He was high on PCP and was wondering why all those cameras and what not were following him.
@Panama Jackson,
What They Do should be #1… great parody on what music videos had or were starting to become. There should be a What They Do pt. 2 for today’s music videos.
Wu Tang – Triumph: This video is easily in the top 5
Run DMC and Aerosmith – Walk This Way: MJ paved the way but this was also a crucial stepping stone for future hip hop videos on MTV
Kanye West – Through the Wire: Kanye usually makes innovative videos, but this is a classic b/c it put him on the map and he shot the video himself
Dr. Dre & Snoop – Nuthin But a G Thang: classic song… classic vid… simple is good sometimes
Nelly – Tip Drill: Three words… credit or debit?
@SouthernCharm, with all the strippers and hoez in that video, i think a just as appropos 3 words would be: paper-for-plastic.
youcan ask me later if you dont get that.
@SouthernCharm,
Oh yeah, that Run DMC/Aerosmith joint was too cool. Was a staple in my household.
I loved Kanye’s Through the Wire, too. Repped my city…and just the rawness and simpleness of the photographs and raw footage was great. That video was really vunerable even though he was pretty much always egotistical, but I have a soft spot for that video.
Um, so, I wonder if there are thorough intelligent discussions regarding the art of including a swipe through a lady’s arse in a music video? Like, have scholars dissected this video?
@Cheekie,
“Um, so, I wonder if there are thorough intelligent discussions regarding the art of including a swipe through a lady’s arse in a music video? Like, have scholars dissected this video?”
Michael Eric Dyson: Before discussing the logic and art of swiping a card through a lady’s buttocks, it’s important to understand the systematic nature of the term, “Tip Drill.”
See, “tip drill,” is a term referring to a particular exercise conducted in basketball practice settings. Players line up, one behind the other, and take turns tipping the basketball off the backboard of the basketball goal. The object of the drill is to not let the basketball touch the ground, while at the same time practicing speed, agility, focus, and quickness in rebounding the basketball with the aforementioned celerity.
“Tip drill,” in the music video metaphorically refers to a woman, whose sexual nature is at such a level, that she allows men to have relations, intercourse if you will, in the same form, fashion, and approach as a tip drill exercise.
What Nelly is trying to convey to the mature viewer, in this case, is that this woman is eager, ready, and willing to let my friends, homeboys if you will, and me have relations with her. If she is willing to take part in such a lewd, outlandish, profligate, salacious act such as this… then maybe… just maybe… she’s willing to let me swipe a credit card through her a**.
@SouthernCharm,
And this has been your hip hop music video breakdown.
*cue the music*
@SouthernCharm,
bahahahahahah!!!!!!!! why! why did you copy and paste that ridiculous-ness (sp)…roflmao. ihate that man that is “the dyson”
@collegebunni,
i actually came up with that. lol
@SouthernCharm,
Just like Chris broke down the Ludacris classic…
Move b!tch (Get out the way)
You see there is a b!tch in his way and he must move that b!tch. So in that he has to use the phrase. Move b!tch get out the way.
@SouthernCharm,
*dying*
STOP IT.
No, keep going. In fact, I see your Michael Dyson and raise you a Cornell West, obscure hand-gestures and all. lmfao
That dissection above shoulda been on CNN.
@Cheekie,
It will be on Black In America 3.
*giggles*
@miss t-lee,
HAHAHA! It shall have its own segment.
@SouthernCharm,
LMAO! That’s him…
Bond.
Daaaang, this was a good list. The whole thang.
“Crossroads” brings me back to The Box days when I used to request that joint (along with Crucial Conflict’s “Hay”) all the time. And I used to be deathly afraid of that ol’ dude whose eyes turned pitch black in the video (I always considered that was the Uncle Charles they missed)
I had Misdemeanor’s “Supa Dupa Fly” as my ringtone for the longest and this video is probably one of my favorite of all time. I mean, come on, Missy in a giant Hefty bag? Genius. I used to always do that dance when you cross your legs and flail your arms back leaning backwards. The cameos were cool, too. And adding the lyric “Beep, beep, who got the keys to my jeep? Vroooooom!” out of effing nowhere deserves my respect, yo.
I love how you added Busta’s “Dangerous” right before Missy’s because his “Put Your Hands Where my Eyes Can See” always reminded me of her “Supa Dupa Fly” in terms of plain trippy bizarreness. I thought they were two of the weirdest AND coolest folks on the face of this earth. And the beat to that joint is HOT like fiyah. I was surprised that didn’t make the list, though. (surprise deez?)
@Cheekie,
My favorite line from that song was
I feel the wind/five, six, seven/eight, nine, ten (eight, nine, ten)
It was genius. So simple but to me I really got the absurdity of what she was trying to convey and it worked.
@Dorian G.,
Yeah, that’s a good lyric, too. And yeah, overall it was so simple yet genius. Even the delivery of each lyric…so deadpan. Loved it.
@Cheekie,
“(along with Crucial Conflict’s “Hay”)”
This had me confused when it came out. How could the same city that gave us Common Sense give us Crucial Conflict? I thought they were from the South originally.
@Humble_One,
It’s weird, yeah.
But note that a LOT of Black Chicagoans migrated from the south. Just about everyone I know has grandparents/parents from down there. And Black folks here kinda have a southern twang to their accent.
@Cheekie,
Yeah, I love the Chi and people from the the midwest. We get along well, there is not really a large cultural barrier between them and Southerners.
Bond.
GangStarr- Words that I Manifest, Classic, Malcolm looking Guru
and MAss Appeal- we had like 17 back to back ice storms that winter, like 93, they had that sh*t in the video LMAO
@OrangeStar616, YES!!! I love Gangstarr
Did anyone mention Warren G “Regulate” yet? And seriously all of Missy’s videos were quirky and interesting, even though she did the same thing in almost all of them. Timbaland had some good videos too, but I don’t know if he is categorized as hip-hop.
“Can’t Knock The Hustle” is a favorite of mine as well. Also A Tribe Called Quest “Find My Way.” But I think favorites have a lot to do with if you like the song in the first place
@MaiTai,
Regulate- that’s what I was finna put down! Who can’t get lost in a hood tale that ensues in mass quantities of shenanigans, backed with the charismatic stylings of Sir Nate Dogg?
“the rhythm is the bass and the bass is the treble…”
out of all the early Wu joints, Da Mystery of ChessBoxn is one of my favs……
is it just me? or do one of the members of pharcyde sound and kinda look like chris rock?
Honorable Mention: Hot Styles ft Young Joc – “Looka Boy.”
Actually, the bootleg unofficial videos that were circulating through Youtube before the actual video came out were better. Just clips of pictures that had to do with each looka-boy roast. Genius.
OK…I am about to show my age!!
My list……
**Self Destruction** I still love this video & begged my mom for years for the big collar shearling that the one girl rocked in the video!! This video was our hip hop WE ARE THE WORLD!!
**Straight Outta Compton** Made me realize that Cali was gangstah. I had no idea what was happening on the West Coast!! I though everybody was just tanned and ate salads.
**Welcome to the Terrordome** Public Enemy changed my life! I grew up in a bubble until I heard PE. They talked about stuff I was feeling in my community & I immediately went and sought out these things they were discussing. This video with them marching around in army gear & throwing up fists..man it was powerful for me!
**Funkin Lessons** – X Clan & Prof X made me start calling myself an Afrikan!! He made our ancestory look cool as hell!!! “Yaa” was born shortly after!!
**Scenario** – As much as I loved ATCQ…Bustah steals this video & the song!! One of my favorites to watch!
**Tennessee** – Arrested Development. I loved them & thought this video was very refreshing. It made me think of summers spent in the country. My kids actually LOVE listening to old Arrested Development cd’s. Well…maybe they are FORCED a little LOL!
**Push It** – Salt & Pepper. Again. I begged my mom for a 8 ball jacket, legging & riding boots. She thought I had lost my mind!!
**MC Hammer** (DONT LAUGH!!) I cant remember if it was Pump it Up or Turn this Mutha. Dude was a terrible rapper but I remember always wanting to watch the video because dude could dance his a$$ off!! Everybody else was walking around pouring out Old E but dude was partying!! I respected him for that…Hammer pants and all!
I have some newer favs too…but I am an old head & quite frankly I find it boring to compare the same video concepts! Sorry!!
@Yaa, Push it and Tramp are my fav S&P vids…
@Yaa,
“Turn this Mutha”
“Hamma, you ain’t hittin’ in New York!!!”
“WHAT?”
“What you gon’ about that huh Hamma?!
I’ma turn this mutha out…lol”
I still quote this ish from time to time.
@miss t-lee,
I think pumps & a bump was THE best Hammer video EVA!!!! LOL
@Nola Darling,
No.
*I was disturbed by a gyrating man in a banana sling.
@Yaa, this is a good list lol. Hip hop classics. That Tennessee video was great. And S&P – the haircut. Whew. memories.
@Yaa, somebody’s old.
@Panama Jackson, 37 is the new 27!! *crickets*
@Yaa, sounds like that jay-z logic.
Cheekie: “Um, so, I wonder if there are thorough intelligent discussions regarding the art of including a swipe through a lady’s arse in a music video? Like, have scholars dissected this video?”
SouthernCharm as Michael Eric Dyson: Before discussing the logic and art of swiping a card through a lady’s buttocks, it’s important to understand the systematic nature of the term, “Tip Drill.”

@SouthernCharm,
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
iHateYou
@SouthernCharm,
Yes, even re-reading your comment down here, you’s still a fool. *still dying*
Okay… just watched the “Sky’s the Limit” vid again and I take issuse ONE thing.
How you gon have them baby girls booty shakin’ by the pool in grown a$$ woman outfits???!!!
That is all.
@BlackBerry Molasses,
Oh wait… I also take issue with them d@mn shiny Versace shirts. How you gon’ do THAT to innocent babies? Just WRONG.
@BlackBerry Molasses,
And now you see why I wasn’t feeling the video.
See my response up top.
No Tupac?!?!?!?
@Uncle Booze,
keep reading and sh*t
thoughts and sh*t
—each of these vids could have easily been on the list:
“tip drill”, “dont believe the hype”, “aint no half steppin”, “rebirth of cool”, “i get around”, “baby got back”, “you got me”, “doin it”, “rock this way”, “one more chance”, california love”, and “touch the sky”
—i could have made a separate list for missy and busta alone, but in order to give a couple other artists some shine i only listed their best vids
—surprisingly, for as big as his catalog is, jay-z doesnt really have many memorable vids. ironically, his “streets is watching” dvd/vid collection is what actually started my jay-z fandom.
—-it’s embarrassing to admit this, but there was a time in the young champ’s life where he assumed that there was a video for every song. imagine the disappointment i felt when learning there was no video for “terminator x to the edge of panic”. i cried in my ralston every morning for a month straight. i even wrote a letter to chuck d
@The Champ,
“surprisingly, for as big as his catalog is, jay-z doesnt really have many memorable vids.”
Probably because most of his videos are just him walking around and ish. lol
@The Champ,
“i cried in my ralston every morning for a month straight. ”
Aw, Champale is sensitive and sh*t.
Where’s Deion Sanders “Must be the Money”?
And MC Hammer’s “Pumps and a Bump” (not the speedo version, but the safer for kids to watch on the box version).
Or Weird Al’s “Amish Paradise”? Yall ain’t got nothing!
I call shenanigans on this list!
@Beez,
“Or Weird Al’s “Amish Paradise”? Yall ain’t got nothing!”
Methinks he was presented with Alfonso Ribeiro’s hood pass for the above song. He had brothas DYING laughing from that video.
Same with “White & Nerdy”. You see me rolll on, my segway!
Aside: I wish a nicca would try to be hard rollin’ on a segway. Like, if a brotha did a drive by on a segway or something? I would quit humanity.
ok ill add some newer ones and show my age, tehe.
1.teenage love affair-a.keys….school daze was the bomb
2.e.badu common, love of my life
3. aliyah -rock the boat R.I.P
4.kid cudi-day n night
5.wale- waledance, chillin
….all i got so far.
@collegebunni,
“4.kid cudi-day n night”
I HATE how this song is so catchy because the deadpan drawl of this song sounds like he recorded after an alarm clock woke up for the first day of school. He sounds like he needs a buck up little camper pep speech.
BUT, the video is nice. I like the video.
“2.e.badu common, love of my life”
I LOVE this video specifically for the slow-mo scene when she sounds like he’s drunk/high, “…and noooow there is no otherrrrr”. Cracks my sh*t up AND down.
@collegebunni, sorry but i have to do it…
i said upthread that EPMD was overrated…im gonna take that back.
now Walé is the MOST overrated motherf*cker ever. for one, he’s not that great a rapper. for two, his songs SUCK. period. Chillin is so terrible the only reason i can stomach it is b/c of the video and the shine it places on DC (much needed). i’ve talked about Drake but Walé i somebody whose buzz i REALLY don’t get.
@Panama Jackson, SKRONG co-signage here ….. dude is mediocre @ best, saw him @ Rock the Bells last year and he got boo’d if I recall correctly LOL…….then he wanna complain that he don’t get love from DC o_O …. nucca you ain’t from DC you from Silver Spring, Gaithersburg or some shat and your music ain’t hittin LOL
@OrangeStar616,
LOL!!!!!
Yeah…I’ve listened to more than a few of his cuts, and I don’t get it…at all.
Lady Caca isn’t helping him out either.
NERD- Everyone nose remix w/ Lupe, Kanye, and Pusha T
I thought this was a dope video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6Jdkqk9ij8
@A-Town Genius,
*hugs you*
You are my e-best friend for this addition. I love me some N.E.R.D and gladly shelled out the 10 bucks to download the entire album on iTunes so I could get this remix. I like the original version too, but the remix? I bump that track HARD.
@Cheekie,
Sweet! I finally got that e-friend I was looking for. Love you for that
@A-Town Genius,
I played that shit out walkin’ to class er’day fo bout three weeks. It was my damn Text message tone. Love me some Nerd and I love me some Lupe although his verse wasn’t great on this song.
Hi my name is Angel and I’m a grown a$$ ringtone junkie.:-(
I don’t pay for ‘em tho.
Do that make it any better?
@AngelicNastyness,
I played this song in the car for like a month straight whenever I was having a good day. And yeah anything you can get for free makes it better.
you know what?
Best video ever??
BABY GOT BACK!
@Panama Jackson,
And I quoteth: My anaconda don’t. want. none. unless you got. buns. hun.
Translation: I would never consider placing my goods near your vicinity except in the situation in which your derreire is quite blessed in size.
@Panama Jackson, naw its “MY Posses on Broadway” LMAO
Off-genre but do y’all remember Mario Winans’ I Don’t Wanna Know video? They don’t make angst like that no more. This grown man sat in a tub filled with water while fully-clothed to weep bout his life and lost love. A GOOD MESS!
@Thuggie Luvvie,
I think I tried to forget that ish.
I hadn’t thought about that in years, until you just mentioned it!!
1. Common (Sense) “I Used to love H.E.R.”-hip hop as a metaphor for a woman…a billion others songs would follow, but none would duplicate the emotion.
2. Pharcyde “Drop”-This it too dope. Everytime it comes on I watch til the end.
3. Public Enemy “Black Steel In The Hour of Chaos” & “Shut’em Down”-All PE videos are dope to me but these two were magnetic. STITHC was charismatic for the prison overthrow. Shut’em Down called out the corporate leeches that were/are taking from our culture without empowering us or the communities hip hop stems from.
4. Roots , “What They Do” & “You Got Me”-Dope, dope, dope.
5. Ghetto Boys “Minds Playing Tricks”-Dope Song, Classic video.
6. Scarface, “Minute to Pray, Second to Die”-Scarface is one of those artists whose entire video catalog could actually go on a list, but this video stands out because of the story telling and visuals. I wanted more after it was over.
7. ATCQ, “Electric Relaxation”-EASY!!! Do I really have to explain this one. Honorable mention to the entire catalog. I am an advocate to ATCQ.
8. Busta Rhymes, “Whoo Ha!”-Dope! When this song and video came on, you lost your mind. It makes you literally want to yell “WHOO HA!” got you all in check… Honorable mention to the entire catalog.
9. Too Short, “Cocktales” & “In the Trunk”-I am a huge Todd Shaw fan. His entire video catalog (before blow the whistle) should be noted as worthy. Notables: “Paystyles”, “Buy you some”, “The Ghetto”, just the whole catalog, lol.
10. Casual, “Later On”-I know many of y’all don’t know or forgot about dude, but he was apart of the Hieros crew. Video is realistic, simple, witty, etc. The rhyme and video was symbolic to the ‘everyday’ guy. Dope.
11. Dr. Dre, “G Thang” “Let Me Ride” & “Still Dre”- EASY. EASY. EASY. No explanation necessary.
12. Sir Mix A Lot, “Posse On Broadway”-Hate if you like, this song & video was dope, IS dope.
13. KRS-ONE, “Love’s Gonna Get You” & “You Must Learn”-You Must Learn gave more knowledge in those verses than schools were giving; Love’s gonna get you symbolized the struggle of an entire generation-mindblowing. His entire/BDP catalog. Dope, despite youre personal feelings toward him as an MC.
14. Jeru The Damaja, “Playin’ Ya self”-The kung Fu/Wing shun video. How dope was that.
15. Redman, “Can’t Wait”, “I’ll Be Dat”, “Whatever Man”- EASY. EASY. EASY.
16. Wu-Tang, “Can It Be That It all so simple” & “CREAM”-Classics, no words.
17. Eazy-E, “4 Tha E”-The dopest hip hop tribute song and video EVER. Yeah fool, EVER!! lol…
18. MC Ren, “Same Ol’ ish”-Hood classic. Showing you how scandalous it is out here…keep the Ruger close, lol.
19. Diamond D, “Sally Got A One Track Mind”-Sally was an outlier then, but the sad reality is now she is commonplace. Dope.
20. Pete Rock & CL, “TROY”-When you heard that Sax, can’t tell me you’re not moved. When you see the video where he’s showing you the pictures of family, the re-illustration of his granddad, Yo…it’s moving.
21. Ghostface, “Daytona 500″ & “All That I Got”-Who thought to take Speed Racer and do a video, DA WU!! I love it… “All that I Got..” yo, those negros were pluckin’ roaches out of cereal boxes..d*mn….water on cereal?!?…’nuff said.
22. Ice Cube, “Everything he has a video for”-I am an O’shea Jackson fan, maybe I’m biased but all of his videos are dope. I’m partical to “Lil’ arse G (remix)”, “Today was a Good Day”, “Check Yo self”, “What Can I Do”. Long live the fro’ and chucks.
22. Bloods, “Piru Love”-This is dope, no matter what you ‘ride’ or ‘bang’, you can’t front…the B-Dogs put it down, sorry Cuz, lol.
23. Do or Die, “Po Pimp”-It was ism all up in this rhyme & video. These boys were trying to put you on. That twista verse still gets rave reviews
24. Outkast, “Benz or Beemer”-Back when only a certain crowd was with them (as fans). I was one. Dope. Brought the A-town live and into your home, Bankhead bounce and all, couldn’t wait to get there, lol.
25. Kanye West, “Jesus Walks”-obviously.
26. Qtip, “Vibrant thing”-obviously.
27. Slum Village, “Selfish”-Dope song, Dope video, Dope women. Hip Hop trifecta.
I’m gonna stop because I could actually go on all day. That’s just off the cuff…I’m a beast (lol–playin’. not really…lol)
Bond. BlkBond.
@BlkBond,
wow…good list Bond.
@BlkBond,
Your list made me yell “Whoo Ha!”, naturally. Another beat I was in love with as a wee Cheekie.
@BlkBond,
I have to co-sign Do or Die, Twista blessed the track.
@BlkBond, very dope list sir indeed,
Add……Apolla Kids for Ghost
and I memba Casual… loved the whole Heiro crew, Souls, Del etc…
I also memba the Lost Boys sampled Benz or a Beamer LOL
“i’m also gonna have to say that “belly” is the greatest music video of all time. it’s the longest, had the best camera shots,and had tyrin turner eating a banana and looking like the gayest version of himself ever.”
This made me laugh so hard. I thanks ya kindly.
@Nola Darling, you’re welcome kindly.
** Off Topic**
Anyone in Detroit know of a cheap transport from Detroit to Toronto?
Just asking, there seem to be a reasonable amount of Detroit heads up in here lurking…
The Roots love in here makes me smile
See, there it is again.
As you were.
Belly? It’s all about ‘Top Shottas.’ None of that preachy Nas BS to stop the guys from selling soap.
And Shadowboxing…. word? I don’t even think that’s in the top 5 Wu videos. Don’t get me wrong, Liquid Swords is a work that even Motzart would like, but I guess can’t dig anything but the grainy first generation of Wu videos.
If Busta had gone as far as to tell everyone to kiss his Converse, that might just have been my number one all-time video. Hahaha
In my love of vintage hip hop I forgot about one of the newer vids that should be on the list and thats “Famous Girl” but Christian Rich…….BRILLIANT and DISTURBING makes one think and creeps one out………I love it, the song is dope too!!!!
What about Ghetto Boys: Mind’s playing tricks on me
Classic vid i can watch 100 times and not get tired of it
Tis blasphemy to not have The Roots classic “What They Do” video.
