Swimming and gymnastics. Talk about it!

VSB
  • QueenRaven23

well, I missed our girls taking home the gold.
And I love Michael Phelps and Lilly King. That is all.

    • LMNOP

Wait, you missed it? Hasn’t it not come on yet?

      • Val

It will be on in prime time.

        • LMNOP

Okay, that’s what I was expecting. I didn’t even realize I could watch it earlier.

    • Illumina

If you have cable, most of their credentials will give you access to the NBC app.

Right now I’m watching the replay of the beam apparatus from team finals. I love that I just look at the routines without having to listen to the commentators.

      • LMNOP

Can you watch this stuff on demand if you have cable? I can’t stay up to midnight, but the US women’s gymnastics team is kind of a big deal at my house, and we WILL be watching that one way or another. I love that it’s no surprise they got the gold too.

        • Illumina

Probably not. I have to go to the NBC sports app on my tablet, PC or Roku. They have all the live events or full replays of earlier events. I’m loving that so far. I can’t watch NBC’s TV coverage for more than 10 minutes.

          • LMNOP

            Hmm, I might try that.

        • grownandsexy2

I have Comcast and its available on demand.

    • RaeRae

Looka here…Lilly King looked right in the camera and let it be known that it was some BS that a swimmer from Russia was still able to compete after testing positive for doping. Then she hopped in the pool and put up and came out GOLDEN!!! WHAT!!!!

  • Val

    My thoughts so far…

    – NBC sucks
    – NBC sucks
    – NBC sucks
    – That swimmer chick needs to mind her business
    – I can’t wait for track and field!
    – NBC sucks

    • QueenRaven23

Are you talking about Lilly King?

      • Val

Yep. If she wants to talk about doping and cheating then she needs to stick to her own sport. And it’s not like that stuff isn’t going on in swimming.

        • QueenRaven23

I was laughing. Everyone’s calling everyone out, which is sad. But at least she got a gold. I posted a pic on my IG. People on wikipedia had her as “Putin Destroyer” and something about the Russian Cheaters.

        • Question

She was specifically talking about swimming (at least initially) because her biggest competition in the 200 backstroke was fined and suspended for doping earlier this year (Russian). So her comments about a clean win were because she beat Russian-homegirl by .03 seconds in what was supposed to be her (Russian-homegirl’s) best event.

          • Val

And then she went on to talk about track and field. She mentioned Justin Gatlin and Tyson Gay by name. Which was my point. She needs to worry about her own sport.

            • Question

Gotcha. I only saw the first 2 interviews she did immediately after her backstroke win. But now she’s the defacto spokesperson on doping in sports? Blah.

        • Cleojonz

I didn’t hear about her commenting about other dopers. I know she spoke specifically about a Russian competitor in her own race which I don’t think she’s wrong to do.

        • TheVilleintheA

          “She young”
I see Lilly King as a kid who reporters probably took advantage of the fact that she is young and probably won’t give a politically correct answer to whatever they ask her. But if she continues to compete as she gets older she will probably use “supplements” to help her recover from training. Initially the supplements will be accepted by USA Swimming, The Olympics and other professional organizations in swimming. Time passes and it’s no longer accepted and she could get caught gasp!”DOPING”. That’s pretty much what happened to Maria Sharapova. Many athletes use supplements and sometimes they may rely too much on a trainer’s word instead of the sports professional organizations guidelines.

          • NonyaB

Yeah, no, Sharapova is guilty as fxck. She and her team were notified about the ban many times by the World Anti-Doping Agency and others, several months before it went into effect. Yet, she tried to say she didn’t know? Technically, she’s been breaking the law for years because despite being living in the US since 7yrs old, she’s knowingly been using a non-FDA approved medication for over 10 years. That med is made only for treating chronic heart conditions, to be taken 2-3x in a year max. She thought her last minute blonde tears and damselling would save her.

            • Cleojonz

And she STILL couldn’t beat Serena.

              • NonyaB

Okay?!! I hope a petty angel whispers this into her cheatin’ ear before she falls asleep nightly. ?

    • LMNOP

I’m surprised NBC doesn’t offer a special “Olympics package” where they just charge you to watch the olympics on nbc.com. Check for women’s gymnastics on youtube or something though.

      • Val

I guess they make more money from making people wait to watch in prime time? But the funny thing is, I haven’t watched anything on NBC during prime time. I see all of the interesting stuff in my fb feed during the day.

        • LMNOP

I was reading something about how NBC usually loses money on the Olympics, but the increasing number of people who don’t have cable makes this better for NBC, I don’t really remember the details, but I thought it was weird that they do this and expect to lose money on it anyway.

          • Val

Yeah, that’s weird especially since Comcast owns NBC now.

          • Negro Libre

Probably because it allows them to advertise their shows.

But yeah, pretty much no one cashes in on the Olympics, it’s just a great way for those in real estate and construction to get tax dollars, aka a Donald Trump wet dream.

          • Question

I don’t see how they lose money. They spent $1B acquiring the rights to broadcast the Olympics and then sold $1.2B worth of advertising before the opening games.

I call BS (on NBC, not you)…

        • Betty’s Babygirl

          – Paying for TV sucks
          – Paying for TV sucks
          – Paying for TV sucks
And that’s why I only pay for Netflix ::)

          • Val

I agree. I have Netflix and now Sling. And I may let the Sling go.

      • Cj

They have a live channel if you have uverse.

        • Catherinewshearer1

          <<s:i. ?????????????????????????????????????????????????????:::::::!!bz849a:….,….

    • Kas

I have to figure out a way to watch track and field live. Tape delay is no bueno.

      • LMNOP

        nbc.com

        • Kas

          Thanks

        • Val

Don’t you need a cable customer number to be able to see that?

          • LMNOP

Yeah, but if you do have cable you can watch it online live.

            • Kas

              Val doesn’t have cable.

              • LMNOP

I know, nbc.com was advice for you.

      • Val

Yeah, I know. But other than leaving the country I’m not sure how else we’re going to see live in track other than maybe some prelems.

      • Cleojonz

NBC is live streaming, no downloading or extra plug ins required. I’m watching (sort of, US isn’t playing so I don’t really care) Rugy right now. I remember trying to live stream 4 years ago and the connections would be horrible and it kept freezing my computer. It’s so much better now.

      • mahoganylawlady

NBC Sports app. They’ll send you reminders of when the events you want to see are on too!

        • John Henry

You need to have a cable subscription to use it. Other than that, I think its like 5 minutes a day…The app sucks.

          • truthseeker2436577@yahoo.com

            I agree.

      • NonyaB

This is next level battle in entertainment regulation: Now that internet-only and internet-to-land TV is fully a thing, businesses need to figure out how to dismantle the mechanism that enable just one channel to have monopoly on broadcasting a global event, which would help all cable channels too.

        • Gibbous

When I lived closed to the Canadian border, watching the Olympics on the CBC was WAY better. And we got to see other countries do stuff. I mean, there are other amazing athletes out there.

          • NonyaB

True. US channels are so US-centric, it’s ridiculous.

    • It’s on tape delay because of you west coast people. Rio is only an hour behind the east coast so we could be watching it live.

      • Val

Nope. It’s on tape delay so NBC can make more money by putting the good events in prime time.

        • SororSalsa

And stretching them out until the bitter end. I watched the ladies gymnastics team finals online today….so much better. Although I might pick up NBC if they actually have Leslie Jones on. That would be worth watching.

          • Cleojonz

I really can’t wait to see how they will actually use her. Obviously she can’t do exactly what she was doing on twitter. It would just be one long bleep lol.

      • Question

Other NBC channels show live events:
Bravo is showing all tennis events
        Telemundo
        TNT
        MSNBC
        NBCHD

The annoying thing is it requires effort to figure out which events are coming on when…

        NBC sucks.

        • K_

YES!!!! thats whats killing me!! we are days in and I cant figure out where or when to watch what I want to see. they just have this hours long chunks of time and only say “volleyball, gymnastics and shooting) like when !!!! you just gave me a 4 hours block

    • TeeChantel

Yes to track and field. I feel like it’s the highlight of the Olympics.

      • Val

Yep, it’s not really the Olympics until track and field starts!

        • Cleojonz

I got swimmers so I call foul on this comment lol. But I really can’t wait for Track & Field.

    • When does weightlifting come on? I’m entirely too busy to keep up with the schedule…

      https://hhharris.wordpress.com/2016/08/09/hearing-angels/

    • K_

what happened with a swimmer chick? I been at work all I day I keep missing everything. and maybe NBC will pick up one Leslie Jones gets there if they let her actually commentate on something instead of just interview

    • TRACK STARTS FRIDAYYYYYYY

      • GenevaGirl

I’m married to a Jamaican who is keeping a countdown of when the “real Olympics” starts!

        • Tracylroberts2

          <<n:i. ?????????????????????????????????????????????????????:::::::!!bu52a:….,..

        • Ruthbjames3

          <<eo. ?????????????????????????????????????????????????????:::::::!!mu334b:….,……..

    • NonyaB

The swimmer Lilly King addressed the doper in swimming (Efimova). She didn’t proactively call out the others mentioned – she was asked about them in interviews. Frankly, I can’t blame anyone for speaking out. The games is a claustrofxck from a regulatory and fairness/ethical point of view. How do you keep waving strict rules over athletes’ heads, then be selectively lenient, especially to repeat offenders? An entire country’s team like Russia declared guilty then unbanned? WTF should you feel about your life as a clean athlete who has sacrificed so much when this happens? I was glad some offenders were called out and others booed, bet they realize they’d have been better off staying away.

    • MsKeisha23

NBC’s coverage is asstastic. They need to let Sam U El and Leslie Jones commentate on all the events!

  • A.G.

Aren’t swimming and gymnastics on tape delay tonight? I think gymnastics has already happened, but you know, ratings.

    • KC

You are correct on all counts.

    • Val

NBC puts all the good stuff on tape delay. Because greed. Everyone else in the world but us gets to see the Olympics live.

      • A.G.

Thanks to Twitter, I got “spoiled.”

      • NonyaB

Haven’t been watching but apparently, you can sign up for free trial with sites like SlingTV or playstation to watch realtime then cancel before trial ends.

        • Val

I just signed up for Sling. You can watch some things live on NBC Sports channel. So far the only good thing I’ve seen live was women’s basketball. Otherwise it’s been stuff like rowing, etc. Most of the other stuff they show on that channel is on tape otherwise.

          • LMNOP

If Comcast wasn’t the devil, I would tell you to just sign up for the lowest level cable for the month and cancel, but they are the devil, so this process would be time consuming, unpleasant and you would somehow owe them an extra hundred dollars for your $12 worth of cable.

          • Illumina

I think I’m about to cancel Sling and stick with PS Vue. Their credentials work for more channels than Sling.

            • Val

Yeah, I’m going to check their channel line up and if I can’t change the channels I currently have then I’m going to cancel too.

So far, other than those basketball games, all I watch is HGTV. Lol I really don’t want to pay $25 a month just to watch HGTV.

          • NonyaB

Good to know. Noticed NBC so lame that even gifs/3-sec video it has on twitter are geo-protected. At this point, I mainly want to catchup on opening ceremony performances (which CBC streamed online but didn’t save) and closing.

    • QueenRaven23

Which helps, but sucks because my gym isn’t showing it when I’m working out.

      • A.G.

It comes on at 8 EST so try catching it then.

        • QueenRaven23

Yea, that’s when I’m there. I was ticked last night. I Walked in to little league baseball.

          • Kas

            Sucks

    • Cleojonz

      Swimming finals are live.

  • Illumina

For those you who are living the no-cable life, Sony has a new service out called Playstation Vue. It’s only available on the Playstation 3 and 4, Apple, Android and Roku devices. If you sign up for the free trial (credit card required), your credentials give you access to the NBC sports app which allows you to watch everything in real time and without NBC’s commentary in some instances.

  • QueenRaven23

    Is Serena out?

    • Other_guy13

      In Doubles..yes…did she loose again?

      • QueenRaven23

I know she’s out for that, but I heard she had a match or two today. I know she has to be tired.

        • Val

She lost in singles too. She’s out.

          • QueenRaven23

It seemed like she was just out of it. Like she has not had a break at all.

        • Ess Tee

It looks like she is, in fact, out. Boooo!

  • Brass Tacks

I think its fitting in this section to send a Happy Birthday S/O to the best Two Sport athlete evar!

    Happy Birthday, Deion “PrimeTime” Sanders!

  • NonyaB

Y’ALL. Have got to check out the interactive breakdown that NYT did of the excellence that is Simone Biles:
    http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/08/05/sports/olympics-gymnast-simone-biles.html

    • Cj

Thx that visual trajectory was bomb. They really did right by her on this one.

      • NonyaB

Right? I enjoyed the matter-of-fact, “here’s the math, biology and physics behind why y’all can’t touch this pint size dynamo on her worst day” explanation.

        • Cj

Soooooooo there was controversy with the Italians in 2013 world because one of their gymnasts said maybe they should paint their skin black so they can win and a coach backed it up by saying judges are seeming to favorite more athletic than artistic routines (paraphrasing). Welp bish please take yo bitter, melanin deficient azz, the heck on cuz NYT got them receipts and they coming for ya neck.

          • LMNOP

            Wow. How ignorant and hateful.

Also, notice how you DONT see Italy out here competing for silver.

            • Cj

Yeah he also went on to say that you don’t see a lot of black people swimming because they don’t have the buoyancy. Can you believe that ish? Nt who’s, she still won and they’re no where to be found soooooooo……….

              • LMNOP

Ha! I can’t wait for him to see in 20 years when black people are dominating the sport of swimming.

That’s so stupid though, obviously all people are buoyant, that literally just means you can float. You don’t win the olympics for being buoyant.

                • Cj

Welp apparently he’s so buoyant his brain floated right out his ears now there’s only hot air which oddly enough explains his aloofness.

              • Cleojonz

No you don’t see alot of black people swimming because it’s hella expensive, there aren’t a lot of pools in inner cities, and the time commitment is crazy. I only have little people swimming and I’m amazed at the cost of it. It gets more expensive as they get older and need more pool time. You figure suit, cap, goggles and just go swim. Nah, that’s just the beginning.

The perception is changing though and girls like Simone Manuel and Lia Neal are helping with that. I was just at a big regional meet last week and I was SOOO excited to see so many people of color. NY Metro area and Potomac Valley had a strong minority presence.

                • Cj

Maybe I’m biased, but I haven’t seen a sport we didn’t come in and fcuk up. Think Venus and Serena tennis, think Tiger golf, matter fact there’s a black fencer and Polo player tearing ish up, but their makes escape me. Look at the female boxing team. All examples of mostly melanin deficient sports except boxing and killed it. Literally almost always comes down to resources. That’s why they don’t want us to have nothing. We were literally bred for this.

                  • Cleojonz

I agree. Once we become involved we tend to excel. Like you said it’s a matter of resources and learning about a certain sport in the first place. Lacrosse is another sport that comes to mind that is becoming increasingly blacker.

BTW I love Ms. Muhammed the fencer. She is just breaking up all kinds of perceptions.

                    • Epsilonicus

In Baltimore, a lot of the private schools won’t play the public schools for that reason.

Also, the greatest college lacrosse player ever, Kyle Harrison, was Black and went to my school.

                    • Cleojonz

You’re a real sport watcher right? Did you see that feature they did about the inner city kids playing polo? It was a recap. Two of the kids featured as little kids went on to college scholarships and are doing amazingly well but they of course had all kinds of problems and people trying to bar their access when the program first started.

                    • Epsilonicus

I missed that one! I used to want to play water polo. My mom could not find a program in Baltimore.

                    • Cleojonz

Not water polo, the kind on land with horses. It was pretty amazing. I have ridden horses before but I could not even imagine being coordinated enough to do what they do on a horse.

I’m actually surprised there was no water polo program when there when you were growing up. I bet there is now though.

                    • Kas

                      Polo is super expensive

                    • Cj

I want to see the one where they’re in the pool and Le Clos looks over to see that Phelps is way ahead of him. Lol

                    • Dougie

I went to high school with Ibtihaj. She’s dope.

                  • Dougie

Now imagine if we didn’t create our own sports (basketball, football, volleyball)… We’d dominate all sports.

                • NonyaB

Exactly. As if BP, especially those living in beach or riverine areas worldwide all don’t swim.

                • Kas

My freshman year of college, one of my White acquaintances was surprised that I knew how to swim. A couple of my White friends quizzed him as to why he thought that. Apparently he had been doing some big brother stuff with poor inner city kids. My friends actually pointed out how stupid his reasoning was, and there weren’t woke by any means.

              • NonyaB

Cause BP ain’t human? The fxck with the ignorance levels of some people. Like, gawd forbid BP perform outside the assigned lens used to view them.

                • Cj

We’re not human, we’re fxcking super human. They’ve done everything they can to kill us and we’re still hear, still fucking ish up, throwing it in their faces.

          • NonyaB

I saw that! All I could think was she lucky she said that trash then not now because the dragging woulda been 2x as savage with the current mood now. Heyll, seemed like some on Twitter still wanted to drag her in arrears, after finding out it happened in the past. LOL. And to think the dumb bish came 5th in that race! Had nowhere near a chance of winning anyway.

            • Cj

I’m sayin tho. And everyone on the podium was white or white adjacent so that was just pure jealously and hatred. I hope she watching from home tho.

    • Thank you so much for posting this! THis is incredible. Simone Biles is a real life superhero straight up. smh

  • will_the_thrill

Gabby has this purple lip. She got this hair tied up, but this mug is beat. She came to slay.

  • QueenRaven23

Welp, guess I’ll be on the treadmill all night watching the games lol

  • Has anyone tried using a vpn?

    • Val

I heard someone else mention that. Apparently you can watch the Olympics live if you have that, right? But I don’t really want to know what a VPN is.

      Techies, what is a VPN?

      • Illumina

        Virtual Private Network.

it will create a private connection to a server say in Britain, masking your IP address so you appear to be connecting from Britain when you really aren’t.

I’ve used CyberGhost and Private Internet Access.

        • Val

Okay, cool, thanks. Do you have to pay for CyberGhost or Private Internet Access?

          • Illumina

Cyberghost looks like it does have a free version.

            • Val

Thanks. I’m going to look into this because I really want to see track live. I’d love to be able to see it on the BBC site.

              • Illumina

                I don’t blame you.

I really enjoyed watching gymnastics qualifying on Sunday with the NBC sports app. I got to watch it live and I think they were using the BBC feed. Commentators were so much better.

              • Kas

Will have to try this myself.

      • It just hides the fact that your in the US.

    • Illumina

I tried it for the opening ceremonies on Friday and it worked ok. The speed was little slow for me and there was a bit of starting and stopping.
