More #AcrossTheFence (This Time, Damon’s Parents Start A Race Riot)

Couple things about this video:

1. I’ve heard this story somewhere between 40 and 640 times, and it gets better every time I hear it.

2. I actually do incorporate it in my book. (My version of the story is much, um, different though.)

3. If this happened today — a Black couple and a Black grandmother getting racial slurs hurled at them, and responding by trashing the store, breaking an arm, and getting arrested — I have no doubt someone would have captured it and shared it on Facebook. And WorldStar.

4. The Isaly’s deli apparently never opened up again. (I’m not quite sure if they shut down because of the incident. But I want to believe that so that’s what I’m going to believe.)

#AcrossTheFence (Damon’s parents shut down Isley’s) from Damon Young on Vimeo.

Anyway, if you can, please record stories with your own families. It could be your parents or grandparents. Aunts or uncles. It could even be your own kids. Tomorrow is national #AcrossTheFence day, and we’ll share as many as we can.

I love your Pops. He reminds me of my Dad. Especially about his wife.
    No games, played.

Wish I had recorded some of the stories from my Dad before he passed last year . . . man

      • Cheech

Me too. Sorry for your loss, KP.

        • kingpinenut

          Thanks Cheech

I’m sorry to hear about your Dad.

This is definitely making me think about recording my Pops and my grandmother. They have stories for days.

        • kingpinenut

          Don’t wait e-sis.

Mother time got folks on speed dial lately.

and going forward, it might be a good idea to just get stories when you (y’all in general) and your parents are together.

my grandmothers died before i was born, and not really being around my grandpas (reasons…we immigrantz) most of the stories told to me about my grandpa are from my mom…considering that i dont know when or if i’ll even have kids..i’m seriously considering doing more to document the stories she’s told me. the technology that we have available allows us to not only have a family tree, but with the video stories, add more colour to the leaves

      I use StoryCorps it’s a cool app

My wife did a mini -family tree for my boys for just my side of the family. Funny, she now knows more about my family than I do.

    • Ache!! Yes. I shoot lil vids with my daughter and every time I watch them..it brings me joy… I am making vids when I go home!

    • I only WISH I had recorded stories from my grandparents! They would drop crazy stories, and when your expression showed that you were amazed – they would look at you like “no big deal”

I love your conversations with your Pops.

When your dad said “all kind of items,” I smiled because the way he said it reminded me of so many of my relatives.

  • K_

What an awesome story!! I’m so glad you are getting an opportunity to document your dad’s words from so many angles (video, words, etc) wonderful! I wish more people would document family history ..so many stories lost ..im still kicking myself for not documenting my grandfather MORE and losing some due to hard drive failures. he was the last in my family and died 6 months ago. I am now trying to find a way to compile all of the videos I was able to save/salvage I have of him so they won’t be lost forever

  • LMNOP

I love your dad. That’s a great story.

  • fedup

    I cannot believe that have been (let’s count them together) 1 post…ah 2 posts…ah 3..4, 4 posts today.

On one of the busiest work days I’ve had in a minute. I cain’t een keep up.

What should I do? Should I go back and look at all the giffy greatness in the comments on PJ’s post about that time Oprah called us? Should I disqus how much I am lovin these #AcrossTheFence videos between Damon and Daddy Damon? Should I try to get in where I can fit in on that post about Insecure, even though I haven’t even seen it cause this #NonProfitLife doesn’t pay me enough for cable TV?

I guess I’ll start with “These BBQ Pringles are the devil”, and, “Imma go find my mama and videotape our discussions too. You inspire me Champ.”

    • “Oprah called us” lol. We won that day.

    • People still eat Pringles? Aren’t those made of plastic and cat pee? lmao

      • fedup

Well day um Negra. Main me throw – up all in my mouf, and I haven’t even had coffee yet!

Sometimes you all you got to eat is what’s in the breakroom at work. My options were Pringles and some ashy rolls in an unmarked bag from that Thanksgiving potluck. I went for option 1. They were flavorful.

      • LOL

  • BeautifullyHuman

Your dad is a great storyteller. He seems wise and full of awesome and insightful stories. And I loved how he came to the defense of your mom and grandmom. So honorable.

Btw, i always thought you looked like your mom from photos posted, but you’re actually a perfect blend of your parents. You look a lot like your dad.

I wish they had inexpensive recording devices when my Grandfather was alive. There is nothing better than an old West Indian man telling stories.

  • Ras

Or maybe I should just grab the camera and tell my son about the goat foot woman that used the guard the Tamirand tree by the old house
