Mood Music.

On my way home from work today I heard a song I hadn’t heard in a long, long while.  It was none other than “Promises, Promises” by one of Original Kings of the Gloom Hand, Christopher Williams.  Man was that a good song, even if all he ever really promised to his women (and specifically Halle Berry) was some of that ackrite on the Black hand side.

*Black power salute*

Now, that song has nothing to do with the price of a 46” inch plasma television in Papua New Guinea, but it got me to thinking about the quality music in general.  It’s no secret that R&B music has gotten worse as of late.  Long gone are the days of romancing women via song.  Most R&B is more sing-talking now as the lines of rap and R&B have begun to blur.  Now it’s all singing about how much of  a G you are, which makes no sense.  Men are now singing for other men.

Confused, we are.

In fact, the current state of R&B has gotten so bad that the less romance you put in your music, the more women seem to like it.  Of course, by women, I mean women under the age of 21, but you get my drift.

So this got me to thinking, what the f*ck are people using nowadays to set the mood??  It seems to me like the only person making quality mood music nowadays is The-Dream and even he’s making the same song over and over.  Usher went out and got old on us and made a “mature” album, which basically sounded like the Brian McKnight trying to make an album for the teen set – only the exact opposite.

Even “Trading Places” just seems…strange and not well thought out.  Usher pretty much killed the mood for everything except responsibility and washing dishes.

And really, who wants to wash dishes?

Nobody, that’s who.

Now, back in the late 80s and early to mid 90s, you could run R&B albums while doing the booty-do as you attempted to get your best stanky leg going.  Whoop-didy-do.  Now, I’m not the kind of guy who listens to the slow jams while making the slow jam.  I’d probably stop mid…well, let’s just say I’d be listening to the music a little too much.  However, there’s a reason people used to make the Get Tha Drawz (actual) mixtapes with Prince’s “Adore” as the last song.

And you could always throw on some Babyface.  Hell, Mr. Edmunds would make sure that he gave you some slow to mid-tempo jams for all tempos of fornicating.

You know what, you ALSO didn’t feel uber-gay buying a Babyface album.  It was music with a purpose.  You can’t tell me that you feel completely masculine while purchasing a Ne-Yo album.

Jodeci?  Of course, they were the original R&B thugs, and later crackheads.  Hell, I can’t even really think of any relevant R&B groups outside of Day 26 and with all of the b*tchassness that Que is displaying lately, I mean, as a grown man I just can’t buy that album in good conscience.

So back to the point – mood music, where does it come from nowadays?  Me no know.  I’m old school, I pull from the stacks of vinyl.

I’d put the first 6 tracks of Jodeci’s Diary of A Mad Band up as the best 6 song-set of mood music in the history of R&B.  Plus its like 25 minutes of quality which is MORE than enough time to get your Clarence Carter on and then be out the door, right?!

That’s just me?

Oh.

Or maybe even R. Kelly’s 11 Play (I’m sorry, but you’re just not bumping uglies to the remake of “Sweet Sadie” – that must be the vulnerable time).

By the way, I’m listening to Intro’s “Come Inside” right now.  Top that.  RIP Kenny Greene.

You know who else really made some quality mood music but never gets their due?

112.  Their first album was bootyliciously inspiring.

Or even better…

SWV.  “Use Your Heart” was MADE for the trickticklin’.

Sidenote: I just have to do this.  A long time ago me and my boy were making up superhero names, and because I’m the most ignant ninja I know at times, I came up with The Tricktickler.  My superpower?  Making hoes happy.  My guitar gently weeps for my ignorance.

So, good people of VSB, with the current state of R&B what it is, what do you use to set the mood?  Is it 18th Century Celtic music with spoons as the percussion or is it some Barry White and his Love Unlimited Orchestra?

Do you go traditional and let Marvin Gaye do all of the work or are you a radical and listen to the smooth sounds of Grateful Dead Barry Manilow Kenny G Carl Thomas?

Or does everybody just hump in melodious silence?

Friends, Romans, countrypeople, what is your mood music?

-VSB P aka THE ARSONIST aka TANGLE JIG P aka GIIIIIIIIIIRL, HE A 3

Admin. Note: I’ll be in Atlanta this weekend and I realize its short notice (I completely didn’t think about this until Tuesday night and forgot about it AGAIN Wednesday), but if anybody is interested in a VSB Atlanta Happy hour, send an email to contact@verysmartbrothas.com.  I’ll gauge the interest and if enough exists, we’ll throw something together quick for Friday OR everybody can meet me on Saturday night when I KNOW I’ll be out, which might be the better option.  Either way, let a gangsta know.

  1. Reggae music, specifically roots reggae, is incredibly sexy to me. Gregory Isaacs’ smooth voice with that slow, steady bass line just.does. it for me. Same for Beres and Barrington’s slow jams.

    Dancehall, while I love, doesn’t have the same effect. I don’t think I can get busy to Sizzla or Capleton.

    And, while I adore Prince’s slow jams and live for Luther and Phylllis and Donny…these songs are for listening and reflecting and practicing my sad face in the mirror. Not necessarily for bumpin uglies.

    If I am going out, I sometimes put on my segzy b!tch music. It puts me in the right frame of mind and, never fail, I meet the hottest men when I do this. What is my segzy b!tch music? 70s soul and disco.

    • @iloVEGrits, You beat me to the punch but i agree with you, something about Beres Hammond – No disturb sign will have a sista feeling all types of way!

      • @JamaicanGirl,

        It’s that voice. It’s raspy. Manly. lol. When he sings “what you worry what the people say…” I get all tingly inside.

    • @iloVEGrits, girl you be in the mirror doing the four corners to “brickhouse”… LOL me too!! yeah but I use music to put me in that club state of mind.. it is usually hip hop for the clubs.. but I can do a little earth wind and fire and when isnt a good time for Frankie Beverly and Maize?

    • @iloVEGrits,

      Beres, Barrington, and Dennis are all great picks, but as great as Gregory is, his voice is an acquired taste. I also find that non-island people sometimes think reggae and dancehall “sound like one continuous song” so you may not want to spring Beres’ Can’t Stop a Man on a girl the first time.

    • @iloVEGrits,
      I don’t think I can get busy to Sizzla or Capleton. Getting busy to Capleton/Sizzla on time with the beat would be great workout.

    • @Panama,

      I’m definitly an 80′s -90′s R&B chikk… come inside… by Intro.. OMG e-mail me that song if u can, it was one of my favorites from B.I.T.D. Ooh-Ooh! memba “Wednesday lover! Wednesday luva, Wednesday luva there’s no other…” I get flash backs when I think about those times and the music!

  2. Well im fairly young so i am not as familiar with all of the Vinyls that you were referring too, not to mention im Jamaican so some of the first “bumping and grinding” songs i heard came from Beres Hammond or Marcia Griffith s or The Melodians.

    I can feel your pain however with the lack of R&B or shall i say quality R&B songs out there, The Dream album prob as good as it gets right now. But when all else fails you can always draw for an Isley Brothers or a Babyface those cats will surely have the bed squeaking.

    • @JamaicanGirl,

      I love Marcia Griffith. As accomplished as she is, it is so sad that people usually associate her with the “Electric Boogie”. The woman sang with the I-Threes, Bob Marley’s background group. And people can only remember “I’ll teach you, teach you, teach you. I’ll teach you, the electric slide.”

      • @iloVEGrits, And people can only remember “I’ll teach you, teach you, teach you. I’ll teach you, the electric slide.”

        is that really such a bad thing? she is a major factor in the decrease of family on family violence at reunions cause who got time to argue about the potato salad when the electric slide song is on? Hell she is probably responsible for the whole family reunion boom in the first place! LOL

        • @shay_d_lady,

          “she is a major factor in the decrease of family on family violence at reunions cause who got time to argue about the potato salad when the electric slide song is on?”

          This is so true. lmao. You could be mid-fight, you hear that beat drop and you run to find a place in the ‘line’. lol.

          • @iloVEGrits, “she is a major factor in the decrease of family on family violence at reunions cause who got time to argue about the potato salad when the electric slide song is on?”

            Oh and not to mention the fact that the electric slide maybe the only line dance that’s universal almost everyone can do it regardless of color. ” The Others” may not do it well but they sure try.

  3. I definitely have to make my own cds… ha… because its a little difficult these days (as you mentioned) to find the RIGHT mood music.

      Dot-Com really? I laugh whenever I hear that song…I would mess up everything secksy as soon as it came on…lol

    • @Camille,
      OMG I completely forgot one of Neyo’s most redeemable songs is “Say It” Definitely a baby making song. Those slow, pulsing and methodical piano notes are just how I like it. I still boggled to why he never released it as a single. I had the perfect video in mind and everything! Lol

    • @Camille,

      I agree with 9 out of the 11 you listed. I’d just add these:

      Sweet Love– 112
      Close— Tank
      Speechless– Beyonce
      When We Make Love– Ginuwine
      Trust– Meshell Ndegeocello

  4. Yes, Yes, the Isley Brothers are something fierce.
    don’t forget Marvin… I always had a crush on him….. rip.

    janet makes some really good baby making music.

    I call all of my baby makin cds “honeymoon mix” ha. yes.

  5. first let me slow clap for the mention of 112…can I touch you is a mood setter if there ever was one!!! also I dont understand how people all up on dream.. he aiight but aint he doin the same thing people hate T pain for? and aint his steelo slick R kelly circa 1999 or Ginuwineish? im just saying but my mood setters

    I do like that Day 26 co star…..

  6. I’m wit the first two posts, play some Beres or Gregory Isaacs…sizzla’s love is divine…Raheem Devaughn gets mad burn in my cd player…love me some isley brothers and marvin gaye…minnie riperton…chaka khan’s “through the fire”…estelle has a few nice songs…jodeci definitely…esp “love u for life”, dwele…

    • @trin-trin,

      I forgot about Love is Divine.

      “take these words of divine, to the princess right away…” yeah. I COULD get busy to Sizzla. lol.

  7. aww and dont forget that TP2.com..them first five or six joints was fi mood setters.. but you are right that Jodeci album with feenin? I gotta agree those first six were the bomb..is it wierd that as a woman I really dont like women singing to set the mood? l mean there are a few but for the most part a woman singing all soft and breathy doesnt do it for me…..I can sing them enroute to the spot where its going down but when the action begins? I need a little bass….

    • @shay_d_lady, I agree with you about the whole woman singing to set the mood thing but i must admit that “Janet- Do you mind” will start a fire, heck may even have a sister pulling out some tricks and things.

      insert Mike Epps- I make you hola for a dolla or do something strange for some change, i aint neva had dat done before im trying to see what that be bout.
      LMAO

      • @JamaicanGirl,
        YES! YES! YES!
        Janet’s “Do You Mind” makes me do everything she sings about in that song and then some!
        **reminiscing and smiling**
        And while we’re talking about Miss Jackson if you nasty, “Any Time, Any Place” and “Discipline” also help put you in the mood to do the do.

        • Yes to “Do Yo Mind”, Yes to “Anytime, Anyplace”. Also yes to “Rope Burn”. *reminicing and blushing*

          Janet has quite a few mood setters in her repetoire.

        • @Right Her,

          Janet has made so great mood songs…

          Would You Mind
          Rope Burn
          Anything
          Anytime, Anyplace

          I know there are so more on last couple albums that would work…

  8. For some strange reason, R. Kelly’s Ignition – the remix – gets me in a sexy mood. And I’m not an R. Kelly fan. But that song does put me in the mood for love.

    Don’t judge me.

    • @Resident GRitS,
      Girl *one hand clasped the collar of my shirt, the other raised in praise* who you telling about Maxwell. I loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesss him. Coco luxury does things to me. I honestly can’t listen to that song in public. Mmmmh, 98% of his songs are just yummilicous

      • @ofloveandotherdemons,
        ooooooh I forgot about Embrya…you are me and we are you…love it!!! :)
        Especially when he went to singing in Espanol.
        OOoooh!

        • @miss t-lee,

          …this entire CD is hands-free, mood music.

          Submerge within the light.
          Illuminate the night.
          Let your atmosphere surround me.
          Submerge within the light…all night,
          ’til we become the sun.

          *Note: There was seriously a point just now where I stopped tying and went into a daze. I gotta go…

    • @Resident GRitS,

      My top 2 Maxwell moodsetting songs are ironically 2 Maxwell songs that most people have never heard of “Seguranca” from the Red Hot + Rio album and “Softly, Softly” from the Sweetback (Sade’s backup band) album.

      Let me tell you “Softly, Softly” is the second last track (before Prince’s Adore” of course) on my “The Business/Get it” playlist. If you love Maxwell you need to have this track.

      • @Herself,

        …girl, don’t think I don’t know about the Sweetback track. I was keeping this one to myself.

        *flashback*

    • @Resident GRitS,
      Something, something the mellosmoothe version (a la love jones soundtrack) is where its at, but also whenever wherever whatever, and till the cops come knocking will get the party started right and quick lol!

      • @PrincesMo,
        oh yes and play ginuine’s “so anxious” i will literally not be accountable for my actions lol ;)

        • @PrincesMo,
          have ya’ll been lloking in my freak’em CD collection? I have a playlist called “mmmm” lol and those are on it! ::dont judge me:: lol

    • @Resident GRitS,

      I can’t believe everybody was sleeping on my boy Maxwell!!!!!! (you know he is shooting a video for Pretty Wings *swoon*)

      Seriously, Max comes on and its is like instant water works/guaranteed panty dropper.

  9. Confession: seven days rarely pass without me listening to “Promises, Promises”.

    That first 112 albulm and much of the second, yep. Their downfall was thinking that uptempo music is more “grown” than ballads (they said this in an interview once).

    All Maxwells CDs and guest appearances. “Softly, Sofly”, oh yeah.

    Much of both Raheem Devaughn’s two studio joints.

    The Parlament remake “Ill Stay” on Roy Hargove’s RH Factor CD with D’Angelo on vocals, yup.

    I have made someone stop in the middle of boning (well, 4play) and turn OFF any Dream, Akon or other such foolishness. That mess is like sexual Shamwow, if you know what I mean.

    • @Sister Toldja, have you heard Raheem’s mixtapes*? The Street Experience (Vols. 1 – 4?). If you like him I strongly suggest them.

    • @Sister Toldja,
      “That mess is like sexual Shamwow, if you know what I mean.”

      This just made me laugh…loudly!!!!

    • @Sister Toldja,
      “Dream, Akon or other such foolishness. That mess is like sexual Shamwow, if you know what I mean.”

      just know that iHate you and iLove you so much right now!! I say “the quicker picker upper” a la Bounty..but I am officially switching to SHAMWOW!

    • @Sister Toldja,
      How bout some ninja had the nerve to play R. Kelly’s double up album during the do…I mean it had just come out but dag! I kept telling myself that’s why he ain’t make it through the 3rd song you just can’t play catch real good with gorilla noises in the background…. :::chuckles::

  10. *AHEM*

    A good instrumental never hurt anybody. Sometimes you can flip a good hip hop instrumental into a great mood setter.

    See such producers as Pete Rock, the mighty 9th Wonder, and The Alchemist.

    Examples. Midnight and You (Pete Rock), Can’t Get Enough (ooh baby) (9th Wonder), and Where Can We Go? (The Alchemist)

    • @ESQuared, it’s also useful to create playlist/mix of such things so that the mood lasts as long as you do. *humming “loving you is like a marathon”

      • @Jay_Delicious,
        shhhhhh, your gonna get us busted for E-flirting again. BTW im looking material for a slowjam mega mix 6. No more of you tapping out before the end, 6 hours of “marathonness” isnt that long…..

        • @ESQuared, as long as we get to share the cell…

          …if you go 6 I’ll be there till the end… Might I actually suggest some Drake, he is new which may cause some problems but, musically his stuff is sound.

    • @ESQuared, I thought I was alone in the hip hop instrumentals…I heart me some Dilla and 9th…I love to hear the hip hop love songs too…”You Got Me” – The Roots…”All I Need” – Meth/Mary…”Paris/Tokyo” – Lupe…and the list goes on…

  11. I am saddened by the current state of r&b. My “panty drop” playlists on itunes consist of 80s and 90s r&b.
    Love you down, tonight by RFTW
    Lady Dujour, My my my byJohnny Gill
    Jodeci… nuff said
    Rockin the boots H town
    Honey love, favorite girl, sex me and most 90s R. Kelly songs
    Rain, always on my mind by SWV
    lay your head on my pillow, it feels good, anniversary and many songs by Tony Toni Tone
    Babyface… nuff said
    voyage to atlantis, don’t say goodnight, most Isley brothers
    Luther..big Luther
    and others

  12. Shock and awe and the lack of Sade in this here thread(Especially The Best of Sade). Well since I’m here I’ll include a few others. The whole(almost) freakin Love Jones Soundtrack, Musiq Soulchild ( I know he makes the same album over et over yet Onmyradio track 2 is the air I breathe). Some one already said Maxwell but how’s about Whenever, Wherever, Whatever & Submerged. *swoons then gathers self* ahem continuing on ….Al Green’s For the Good Times, and John Legend. Who remembers Boyz II Men Uhh Ahh the remix version (just me?….damn) Steveland Judkins(Morris) Moon Blue, Golden Lady, Creepin…his catalog is too extensive to continue. Anita Baker ( nuff said there) and every other artist mentioned so far.

    • @Nola Darling,

      Co-sign times 2 on the Boyz II Men Uhh Ahh remix. I definitely wanted to “come closer to Sean.”

      • @Chocolate Girl Wonder,
        Ditto

        P.S. Someone told me I looked like her about a year after the movie came out and I was NOT having it. Then I saw it again a few years back like and thought she looks like the sister I never had.

    • @Nola Darling, Sade’s love is stonger than pride is always good, also no ordinary love. def boyz II men uhhh ahhh and i’ll make love to you. Maxwell’s till the cops come knocking

  13. Ofloves’ Mixed Tape for Pro-creation
    1.) Don’t Rock the Boat- Bob Marley
    2.)Wolves( Act I and II)-Bon Iver
    3.)Flightless Bird-Iron and Wine
    4.)Coco Luxury-Maxwell
    5.)Favorite One- Revival
    6.)Marry Song-Band of Horses
    7.)Takk-Sigur Ros
    8.) Svefn-g.Englar-Sigur Ros
    9.)Heartbeat-Nneka
    10.) When the Rope Get’s Tight (Don’t Fail Me Now)-Ryan Adams
    11.) Good Morning Heartache-Billie Holiday
    12.)Radio War-Iron and Wine

    Ok, so technically most are not R & B, but I wanted to play along. Plus, most of the songs don’t have romantic/mushy/lovey dovey lyrics, but they all have these lush, rich, sort of melancholy tones that make me simultaneously swoon, depressed and sort of randy. Apparently sadness is an aphrodisiac for me. I joke. I jest. I kid.
    Anywhoooss the above is my ideal berry grinding music. Go forth and copulate, my friends.

    • @ofloveandotherdemons,

      So downloading some of these…especially Iron and Wine…I’ve been looking to listen to some of their stuff for awhile now….

      • @Datalore,
        I love Iron and Wine, they are pretty much the soundtrack to my days. I would check out Our Endless Numbered Days and The Shepherds Dog. They have a million and twenty five EPs, but only a couple of full length CDs (like the two above). I’m more than happy to share my love for Sam Beam with the world.

    • @ofloveandotherdemons,
      i love Billie’s good morning heartache but i think it’s more of a “slit my wrist”/let’s watch lifetime song more than a procreation song, but to each his own :)

      • @PrincesMo,
        Yeah, some slit my wrist music kinda does things for me. LOL. Anyway, I think I like that the song is so emotional and raw. It really is a little sensual. Or I have issues.

    • @ofloveandotherdemons, as much as i LOVE Nneka…and as much as i LOVE heartbeat…i cant see myself gettin it in to that song…that seems like one of those deep contemplating songs…i do think Nneka is dopeness tho

  14. Aww mayne another reasy for the world fan! I forgot love me down! That’s a def but concerning maxwell embrya is good but that unplugged version of his first cd is ….I…mmmmm that’s all I can say and yes the remix to boys to men uh ahh? Is extra sexy too tempo slow and my bodys calling by r kelly and s.e.x is on my mind Is a good one from my college days

  15. Silk – Freak me
    Jodeci – Freakin you
    Janet – Do you mind
    D’Angelo – Untitled (How does it feel?) – Whew!

    • @YGB,
      people don’t say freak anymore. After they stopped saying using freak as a euphemism mood music down hill. They don’t even use euphemism no more they say the cr*p out right i.e. “Get You Wet” By Pretty Ricky for that matter anything by Pretty Ricky. They sux chopsticks!

      • @BlueSkyez,
        saying the stuff outright means that songwriting is no longer considered to be a type of music lyrical poetry. Just say the first thing that comes to your mind on the beat = songwriting in today’s terms.

  16. Awww. How i love VSB music related posts! Yay! Well, to really get in the mood there’s nothing better to me than the old school cuz ain’t NONE of these young bucks bringing it like LTD, Luther, Frankie Beverly and Maze, Prince, En Vogue (Just listened to Born to Sing and Funky Divas like last nite… R&B today should just DIE!), Anita Baker (Ciara who?)… and the list goes on. But there are a couple new albums by young R&B artists that I am currently in love with. Here goes:
    J. Holiday- Round 2 Good stuff!
    Musiq – So Beautiful and the whole album. Love it
    Jamie Foxx- Intuition ( or Blame it on the Alcohol. This song is s3xxy to me for some reason :-D )
    Avant’s latest forget the name but I really like the album
    Eric Benet- Love and Life
    Usher – Here I Stand the song… can’t say the whole album but i LOVE this song. It’s so great to me.
    Ne-Yo’s album is good stuff! I like it (not necessarily s3xxy but it’s good!)
    That is all… thank you and goodnite :)

  17. I think most R&B cats are infatuated with some other man’s girlfriend, including the Dream. However, I must admit that Dream is able to set the mood for the females… interesting.

    Don’t forget about Raheem and Robin Thicke.

    In terms of ladies, Keyshia Cole’s last album was phenomenal as mood music with tracks like, “Brand New” and “Erotic” and “Playa Cardz Right.”

    • @Dr. J,

      I think most R&B cats are infatuated with some other man’s girlfriend, including the Dream.

      lol, thats because they’re all f*ckin like the same 12 chicks

    • @Dr. J, Real Talk, illthrow on rap to gauge the level of hood chick im dealin with… aint nothin like Direct TV and their rnb satellite XM channel… its like the djs are hired for cats to win in the bedroom! lolol

  18. Yo, as much as I hate to admit it, Day 26′s album is that biz. “Babymaker”??? Whoo wee!! Dem boys takin it back. It also probably helps that Will makes me a little damp.

    Also, “Secret Garden” anyone??? Yeah, enough said.

    • @nia,

      OMG. I have Secret Garden on cassette tape. LOL. James Ingram is the best. That song gave El Debarge his sexy back.

      Unless you’re talking about another Secret Garden. If so please disregard.

      • @Ms. Hall,

        Yes, I’m talkin bout that “Secret Garden”.

        But MY…ahem.. “secret garden”, is the ish also. ;) TMI??

        Show ya right.

        • @nia,

          I used to have a mix-tape with “Secret Garden” and “Moments in Love” playing back to back…complete with radio dj interruptions and few times when I repeatedly had to kick my little brother out of my room.

    • @nia,
      I don’t know why everyone is going crazy over Day 26′s album as a mood setter. I guess its okay until you hear Diddy’s voice and then that ultimately kills the mood.

  19. Man … there is a serious … serious lack of good “take em’ off and show me something, albums out so like the many above me i go back in time…
    Anita Baker, Stephanie Mills, Frankie Beverly, 90′s R. Kelly, Heatwave (cause always n forever was that hot shyt…. ), Roy Ayers, Jilly from Philly, the entire I Want You album from Marvin Gaye, Mint Condition (people really need to pay more attention to tha stuff they hide on the album)

    as for new cats makin good music, there is always Raheem Devaughn
    i like Raheem

      • @The Champ,

        It’s like that Aesop fable with the Sun and the North Wind… Cats used to and get you all hot and bothered to try coerce you out of your garments now they’re just trying to blow them away with piss poor lyrics.

        • @Chocolate Girl Wonder, Sadly enough you are correct, seem like youngins’ these days jus dont wanna put the work in. However this is a direct result of thier young female counterparts allowing the lack of energy to get them the panties….

          • @Stix,

            I hate to say what’s been said so many times but… it’s “Daddy”‘s fault they don’t have more stringent standards.

        • @Chocolate Girl Wonder,
          “…the Sun and the North Wind….”
          This just reminds me.
          I’m really flabbergasted that no one mentioned “Earth Wind and Fire YET. Play Love’s Holiday, Can’t Hide Love, Would you Mind? and its over! Y’all must be sleepy up in here.

  20. F-Action cd’s…volumes 1-53…at least I think that’s the last one…lol
    For ya’ll who don’t know these are S&C (screwed and chopped) slow jam cd’s.
    My faves S&C slow jams?
    Silk “Meeting In My Bedroom/If You”
    Kellz “Seems Like You’re Ready”
    Ginuwine “So Anxious”
    Something about those beats!

    • @miss t-lee,
      F action cds go so hard! My fave is #14 with that Splackavellie and I believe #11 with that Jon B. They don’t know.

      *Side note: I kind of like Don’t Flex by 8 ball and MJG just something about it screwed that just do it for me. (I know weird)

      • @Ms. T,
        “I kind of like Don’t Flex by 8 ball and MJG ”

        It’s that beat!!!! :)
        Make you think of all the things you could be doing to that beat…okay I’ma stop now…lol

        • @miss t-lee,
          OMG! im from houston and all the F-action cds do it for me.

          promise-ciara
          falsetto-the dream
          you already know- 112

          my bf does NOT understand… but of course.. when im happy .. he’s happy ;)

          • @CoCo,
            ::waving:: hey girl.
            I find that F-Action cd’s are an acquired taste for some…but once they get it, they “get it”.
            That Falsetto (s&c) goes soooo hard. Along with Bobby Valentino’s “Wreck”.

  21. Ok yall have listed some great song. All of which that have been featured on a cd or two. And yes P, there is not a complete album that you can by and play from track 1 to the end that will keep the mood set. But I will suggest a few 21st songs that have been found on my mixtapes (“the oooh mix, black love,…)

    Mos Def-The Panties (umm enough said. Put that nail in my coffin)
    Robin Thicke-Teach You, I Need Love
    Floetry-Imagination, Lay Down, Say yes
    Jon B.-Inside, Calling On You, Cocoa Brown, Multiple
    Monifah-Suga Suga
    Trey Songz-In The Middle
    Janet-Warmth
    Jill Scott
    Craig David-Take ‘Em Off
    Sammie-Slow
    R. Kelly- plenty but I think it’s Sweet Tooth, The Jungle, S€x Planet (the on Double Up may be named something else)

    @Camille
    Girl I thought I was the alone one some of those songs. Yyyyessss Nina Sky “Temperature Rising” YES!

    • @YaDaddyLikesIt, I could barely read your post w/o sniggling at your screen name…GENIUS I say!! sheer GENIUS! lol

    • @YaDaddyLikesIt,

      “Robin Thicke-Teach You”

      - Why am I envisioning him, ruler in hand, singing “I’m gonna have to straighten you out.”

      Yessir.

  22. Janet- Anytime
    Floetry- Say Yes
    Ginuwine- So Anxious
    Jodeci’s 1st album
    Robin Thicke- Teach U a Lesson
    Boyz II Men- slow cuts off the first album

    Nothing today moves me! Just…blech!

  23. Yo Robin Thick is tryin to put it down. N is we supposed to be beddin down the hood chicks to Jaheem. Real talk put some soca or some Dub. I don’t know what to think of this yung generation’s music choices values. Protect ya neck…

  24. In my house we pretty much get down on the old school. And my husband has a multitude of vinyl from way back when. He love it. I love it. We make love to it.

    Luther Vandross…for that guy to have been a “sugar cane” I bet he is responsible for more baby making than Dr. Michael Kamrava. The one I am carrying now was mixed with LV playing in the back ground.

    We both of our own mixed CDs of oldies that we have put together. Male and Female artists.

    There is not a lot of new stuff that really catch my attention as far as mood music. There is stuff that I listen to but I wouldn’t put it on in the hopes of getting it on.

    • @Raqi,

      Awwe congratulations on the Conception Raqui. If you ever have a craving and need someone to eat next to you to make you feel like you not a p.i.g. hog. I’m ya man. When is they coming out to play?

  25. @GOODEness

    Haha! Why, thank you. *bowing* I use to say it all the time. Just goofin’. And it has been true on a couple occasions. *shoulder shrug*

  26. KABOOM GUESS WHO STEPPED IN THE ROOM!

    I know…I know…I been gone (again) but I am back (again) so whaddup??

    ok to the task at hand…FIRST let me say that I think R&B has gravitated to being called “soul” and I enjoy both…

    I have almost all of my music on my computer and strategically placed speakers so I can play my “cumpany specific playlists” throughout the apartment! and they never skip or stop and were compiled with the man of the hour in mind…LMAO!

    that being said…there are some OBVIOUS oversights so far on these replies (and some local artists I STAN for**)…smh…rookies! lol here are a FEW examples of…

    HOW GOODY LIKES IT:

    (some) Erykah Badu
    Jill Scott
    Geno Young **

    Heavy D’s new Reggae CD “Vibes”

    and the list goes on…but I got sh*t to do…be back later…

    (shouts out to all my TWIGGAS & TWITCHES)

    • @GOODENess,

      My name is CoCoPuffs and I approve this message!

      cudos go out to Tank, Eric Roberson, Dwele, and that Love Jones soundtrack! Maxwells Sumthin, Sumthin mellosmoothe version…ah, memories

    • @GOODENess,
      I’m glad you mentioned Tank and Tweet because I was worried nobody would…. Along with many other songs already listed whose memory alone give me puddle panties…some of my fave Tank specifics are Slowly…(of course) Close… (on the One man Album)…When.. (sex love n pain)

  27. Oh yeah I forgot my old school favorite.
    The “Let’s Get It On” album from Marvin Gaye.

    Pure deliciousness.

  28. @miss t-lee

    Seriously can they reconcile? I need Floetry in my life. All that breakin-up needs to STOP! They can kill a song!

  29. oh yeah…forgot

    Floetry
    Joss Stone
    Res
    India.Arie
    Musiq Soulchild
    Algebra
    Anthony David
    Breinne Moore

  30. WHAT HAPPENED TO MY LONG @SS LIST! I had a GREAT one and it is NOT on here! I clicked “Submit” and er’thang!!

    booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo*panting, catching breath*0000000000000000000000!!

  31. @GOODEness

    “so I can play my “cumpany specific playlists” throughout the apartment! and they never skip or stop and were compiled with the man of the hour in mind”

    Classic! Just priceless!

  32. Other Songs on my “The Business/Get it” Playlist

    TLC – Red Light Special
    Usher – Seduction
    Slum Villiage – Count The Ways
    Novel – Peach
    Mos Def – The Panties
    Jill Scott – Imagination (The Crown Royal Suite)
    Floetry – Getting Late
    D’Angelo – Untitled (How Does it Feel)
    Sade – No Ordinary Love, Lover’s Rock

    Plus dang near everthing else in this comment thread.

  33. I think the problem is you’re looking for the more popular, commercial, 106 & Park type of music to set the mood, and this current crop of R&B singers don’t have any soul. Here a few of the artists on my mood maker mix cd’s….

    Jill Scott
    Estelle
    Raheem Devaughn–most songs on both cd’s
    Eric Roberson
    Musiq
    Goapele
    Raphael Saadiq
    Bilal
    Van Hunt
    Rahsaan Patterson
    Floetry
    Angie Stone
    Les Nubians
    India Arie
    J. Holiday
    Ryan Leslie

    You can’t expect children to make grown folk music….

    • @N.I.A. fabuloussince82….

      I agree with your list, 100%

      personally, I am a fan of xm radio. For those of you with DirecTv, channel 843 (Heart & Soul, formerly Suite 62) after 10pm is that hot fiyah! They never skip a beat.

      Paula Campbell ” You Make Me”…anyone?

    • @N.I.A. fabuloussince82….,

      I think the problem is you’re looking for the more popular, commercial, 106 & Park type of music to set the mood, and this current crop of R&B singers don’t have any soul

      thats a good point. i think there are cats making good music…they’re just not the ones all over the radio

  34. really I am old school also in terms of R&B and don’t really use music to set THE mood but there are a few newer folk who make the most beautiful music with a fusion of genres like Esthero………. and then I listen to alot of world music like the genre Bosa Nova with artists like Bebel Gilberto, music so sensual and sexy..I love her mom Astrud as well etc etc etc…sometimes you have to get outside that stale ass R&B box period..the DReam sucks to me anyway LOL

    • @OrangeStar616,

      co-sign Esthero. I always feel just a little bit naughty after listenting to Wikked Lil’ Grrls

    • @OrangeStar616,

      I also co-Sign Esthero.

      My Torture, I Love You, and even If Tha Mood.

      I’m not gonna write them here but the lyrics for If Tha Mood are all kinds of segzy (to me at least). You know if you got that ‘Friends with benefits’ thing going on.

  35. I guess this will be a sign that I’m under 21 (until later this year) but I like Tank as mood music, some Tyrese (like 3 songs of his), J. Holiday, Usher, 112, Silk, Day26, Avant, Bilal, Boyz II Men, Mario (yeah I said it), Ne-Yo, R. Kelly, the list goes on.

    But then I have an old soul, so my playlist’ll have Al Green and Marvin Gaye, Luther Vandross, Mint Condition, Dru Hill, Dwele, Erykah, The Temptations, Prince, Sam Cooke, Teddy Pendergrass, etc.

  36. I remember Freshman year in college I banged to Midnight Marauders…damn shame coming from a musical sophisticate such as myself.

    I don’t listen to any new R&B if I were to set the mood. My lady friends who visit love when I dig into the crates and find that old love sexy music. I usually create my own soundtrack though…nothing beats grunting, bodies slapping and bed squeaks. I play a mean timipani.

    • @CPT Callamity, I concur with making ones own score/soundtrack..thats what I loVe to hear and the best music to the ear anyways!!!!

      • @OrangeStar616,

        Another reason is because I’m too lazy to program a playlist and I don’t make mix tapes/CDs as often because I have probably close to 300GBs of music I would have to pluck from. So usually it goes from a little conversation to animal sounds in about 12 minutes. The afterglow music (read: heavy breathing and the sound of your heart beating through the matress) is comparable to classic music. My contra-basoon is wicked too!

  37. That darn Janet….I tell you what…
    Anytime, Anyplace
    Discipline
    Would you mind
    Rope Burn
    When We Oooo
    China Love
    Take Care
    Warmth
    Moist

    I listen to chexy music on a daily basis so I have sooooooo many…
    Prince – damn u/scandalous
    Raheem Devaughn – text messages
    Usher – seduction/can you handle it/that’s what it’s made for
    Jodeci – feenin (all the chronic in the world couldn’t compare to you….word!)
    R. Kelly – 12 play
    Beyonce – speechless
    Robin Thicke – teach u a lesson
    Floetry – lay down/imagination/say yes
    Jamie Foxx – storm (forecass)/weekend lover
    Jill Scott – crown royal
    Sisqo – how can i love you tonight/your love is incredible
    112 – now that we’re done/can i touch you
    Carl Thomas – lady lay your body/hey now
    Joe – Peep show

    I mean seriously….I could go all day…

    • @This Just In, I can not believe I forgot to put Sisqo on my list. I absolutely love it! Incomplete jams!

    • @This Just In, China Love is one of my fav Janet joints, also 70′s Love Groove, Someday is Tonight,
      Anything..ect yeah Janet had some hot ones 4 sho!!!

  38. My list consists of:
    Babyface
    112
    Dave Hollister
    Dru Hill
    Jill Scott
    Case
    Ginuwine
    Kells
    Raphael Saadiq
    Tony Toni Tone
    Jon B
    Rome
    MJB
    The Dream
    Nivea
    Jill Scott
    KeKe Wyatt
    Z-ro (sike)

        • @Ms. T,
          That was exactly the song I was thinking of!!!!
          Or maybe “Baby Girl” off the new album…that’s as close as it’s gonna get.

    • @Ms. T,

      Amazing. I can’t recall ever hearing any love sexy music when going over to a chick’s crib pre-boogie or during…damn…now that I think of it…I haven’t…

        • @Ms. T,

          Hardly ever have gotten the romantic cook dinner thing. As a matter of fact…I have never really had a “romantic” dinner in general. I know..I’m behind the power curve but that’s what happens when you’re a soldier. You fight wars and you go home…end of story.

          • @CPT Callamity,
            I know..I’m behind the power curve but that’s what happens when you’re a soldier. You fight wars and you go home…end of story

            Dangnabbit!!! If this didn’t make me shed a tear. Sigh.

    • @Ms. T,

      I can’t beleive I forgot Dru Hill!

      Beauty and You are Everything (the original not the remix obviously)

    • @Ms. T,

      DAVE HOLLISTER!!!! I totally forgot about him!!!!

      “wanna be down with my program..you know my steelo…i gets busy when i’m doin my thing…”

      yeeeeeaaaahhhh!!!

  39. I also like “Buy you a Drank” by T-Pain… lol. Maybe it’s the beat. But that song makes me want to sit @ a bar all prettied up and wait for a gentleman to buy me a drank…

    • @pgh muse, I could go all day on this too… but I just remembered “Take our Time” by TLC… this song was definitely the jump off. And “This is how it Works” from the Waiting to Exhale soundtrack.

      • @pgh muse,

        TLC is like Janet. You don’t realize how many mood setting tunes they have until you start listing them off.

  40. I would say that 88% of the music I listen to falls under the category of wildsegzymonkeytime jams, and none of it was created past the year 2005. The other 12% is a virtual free for all that’s rather embarassing to share. Not as embarassing as liking Raydiation *coughwhatthehellPJcough*, but still. With that said, my fellow VSBs and VSSs have excellent musical tastes, and I have nothing to add that wasn’t shared above. :-)

  41. hmmm……

    ~~~~~~~~~~~ –> memories/flashbacks about….nevermind.
    first, that 112 joint was awesome. from start to finish.
    next, i lurve luther, sade, anita, stevie and ‘nem but they are thinking/chillaxing music.
    last, i am an advocate of making your own mixes. which have included some of the following (but i’m not at home so this is a top of mind list):
    secret–maroon 5
    rock the boat-aaliyah
    lick-joi
    til the cops come knockin; sumthin sumthin (mellosmooth mix)-maxwell
    promise-ciara
    anytime, anyplace; would you mind; making love in the rain-janet
    push-playa
    falling; sexual-shai
    inside my love-trina broussard
    the softest place on earth-xscape
    insatiable- prince
    • @SouthernGirl, inside my love-trina broussard
      the softest place on earth-xscape
      Awsomeness! I love both these songs and Joi!!! Her album was a banger.
      • @This Just In,
        girl!!!! it’s in there. trust. you must’ve been speed reading. that song does some thangs to me…..
        @pgh muse,
        joi is cool. often ignored though. that scene in XXX was no joke either. that’s where i first heard that song and immediately went home to investigate and purchase. lol.
        • @SouthernGirl,
          “joi is cool. often ignored though. that scene in XXX was no joke either”
          Yup.
  42. Applause! Organic thought. You must have got some last night and more to come in the A writing like this. You had a real good start in the 1st half and continued to do so in the second. You shot 72% from tge field in thus game. So tell us what contributed to your lack of performance in previous games?
    The mood music that sets it off for me is my voice. I see we have something in common, I’m also known as the Chick Whisperer. See Ceasar Milan.
    e.g As the MVP of your fantasy orgasm team I accept this honor on behalf of all those that came before me. Cheers! If you become Milky McCreamy do note that the sound of my voice can be used as a flotation device.
  43. I feel like I did a list of songs on here before lol, but here we go again.
    Jill Scott – All I
    Floetry – Lay Down
    Usher – Can you handle it?
    Tank – Slowly
    Neyo – Mirror, Say It
    112 – Knock You Down, All My Love, Sweet Love
    Raheem Devaughn – Love Behind the Melody, oh and Breathe on Love Experience…
    Janet – Warmth, Anytime, Anplace
    R. Kelly – almost everything lol, but specifically Greatest Sex and Naked
    Surprisingly, Dream’s Love vs. Money does the trick!
    I’m sure I have more.
  44. There are some fool proof songs for me:
    grub on- trey songz
    thats what its made for, superstar- usher
    Robin Thicke
    Much of the 90′s male R& B groups… they get it goin…
    Hmmmmmm… I think my boo is in for the best night of his life tonight.
  46. I’m just gonna throw out some songs that get me in the segzy kind of mood. Not necessarily something that I would play when I’m about to do the do, but the kind of thing for my own internal soundtrack if you know what I mean.
    Toni Braxton – You’re Making Me High
    Britney Spears – Slave 4 U (You all can laugh at me all you want! I am not gonna hate on a Neptunes beat no matter WHO is singing over it)
    Madonna – Justify My Love (again say what you want but the song is still segzy
    Erykah Badu – Kiss Me on My Neck
    Lauryn Hill – The Sweetest thing
    Lauryn Hill and Bob Marley – Turn Your Lights Down Low
    Outkast (Andre 3000) – Prototype
    Prince – The One, Shhh
    Truth Hurts – Addictive
    Aaliyah – One In A Million
    Slum Villiage – Dirty, Climax, The Look of Love
    Nina Simone – I Want Some Suger in My Bowl
    Case – Happily Ever After
    Me’Shell Ndegeocello – The Heather Hunter Theme, Beautiful
    Dang I think I could do this all day.
  47. Oh and as far as that Usher song… I agree with you. “trading places” gives clues to me that they generally have boring s3x.
    “you get on top, tonight i’m on the bottom cause we, tradin’ places….”
    **yawn**
    isn’t that supposed to happen… every time?
    • @blackberry molasses, LMAO yeah Usher totally pulled his own card on that one. However, I can’t imagine him crooning about a “reverse wheelbarrow” so maybe he didn’t have much of a choice
      • @Kindred Smile,
        okay.. maybe not reverse wheelbarrow **snicker**. but seriously, what about changing location, changing orientation in space… adding props, accessories, food… i mean COME ON USHER! You are supposed to be a s3x symbol(?) and that’s the BEST you can come up with?
        Boo.
    • @blackberry molasses,
      Oh and as far as that Usher song… I agree with you. “trading places” gives clues to me that they generally have boring s3x.
      “you get on top, tonight i’m on the bottom cause we, tradin’ places….”
      i mean, to his credit, he is sleeping with a 50 year old woman. probably can’t do too many tricks without breaking a hip
      • @The Champ,
        OH
        SH*T.
        I didnt know Ursher was out here messing with one of the Golden Girls.
        (kinda makes me think thats his cover and hes out there on some Ganstalicious type deep cover…”Doin the Hommie”)
        • @ESQuared,
          I see you also stan for The Boondocks…
          Don’t you remember him in Tom, Sarah and Usher… when he got pimp slapped by Tom? That’s when I was like “Mmmhmmm… everything done in the dark… shows up on The Boondocks.”
          • @blackberry molasses,
            Say word, cause clearly Sarah was interested, and all he did was take pictures, and sing songs. When she all but threw herself at him…
            come on now…as “A Pimp Named Slickback” would say “Sounds like some ol’ gay sh*t to me”
  48. I forgot Will Downing & Rachelle Ferrell Nothing Has Ever Felt Like This. Candlelight & You by Keith Washington, and On The Floor by Brian McKnight. Beyonce’s Speechless. Mariah’s Bliss & Jason Mraz has some beautiful music to start the night off right ( I’m Yours, Lucky) *sigh* Shai and Lose Control by Silk. I think I know what this issue is now. The newfangled R&B acts are too pretty. Most of the people on this list would’ve never won class cutie. And they weren’t concerned with prancing across the stage with their choreographed steps.
    • @EssenceBK,
      Actually…YES. I was a bit sad that song didn’t get more airplay. Should’ve made a video for it.
  49. I’m a young’n, but I’m jamming to the Isley Brothers right now before heading off to class…and this is music that is required in the backdrop!
  50. For the record, “Adore” will be played during my wedding ceremony. It may be THE greatest love song of all time (if there was such a thing)…
    There are so many flavorful memories that one soundtrack wouldn’t do it justice…
    HOWEVER I currently don’t listen to any music during my happy fun time. The man is not that fond of the RnB. Much like LeBron in that Nike commercial, he doesn’t express. And let’s face it, that’s what the soundtrack is for.
  51. Hmm, 112 definitely! U already know! Next I would say Ginuwine is ok too. And I can’t forget Donnell Jones, he was great. Whatever happened to that man??
    • @Alynrochelle,
      Silk!!!! They should change their names to Stained Silk Sheets or something from all the babies they compelled people to make.
  52. Man oh man I totally have all the the songs and albums you mentioned on ipod. Although I was only a little knucklehead elementary school kid when most of these jams came out; I knew the real deal and still do. The only new cats I think who has some good jams out now on par with the old school is Raheem Davaughn, Kem, Carl Thomas, Donell Jones, Maxwell although
    those last three aren’t that new at all And OMG ATLANTA HAPPY Hour! I thought y’all was based in Maryland or D.C.?
  53. I enjoy classic 90s R&B, but I have to admit that I do enjoy listening to Pretty Ricky when “doin the do”.
  54. Don’t forget:
    Tamia- Officially Missing You, You Put a Move on my Heart
    Tyrese – Signs of L*ve makin’
    High Five – The Kissing Game
    New Edition
    Teena Marie- Ooo La La La
    Kem- Love Calls
