Its Time To Stop Allowing Ourselves To Be Seduced By Shitty White Women

Joshua Blanchard/Getty Images

Tomi Lahren is a terrible person.

Not misunderstood. Or just a conservative. Or capital letter White. Or even very problematic.

No, she is an abjectly awful person. She says abhorrent and hateful things, and has leveraged this abhorrence and hate to give herself a larger platform to infect more people with it and make more money off of it. She is willfully and dangerously ignorant, is either unaware of or unconcerned with historical context, and also seems to have no problem inciting violence against people protesting and brutalized by it. If Heaven exists — and I believe it does — and what we believe to be true about Heaven is actually true, if she died today she would not be there tomorrow.

She is also young, petite, and very blonde; characteristics that, in tandem, are considered by very many people to be the three most desirable things a woman can be. If she appeared on screen and the TV happened to be on mute and you happened to not be paying much attention to it, you could easily mistake her for Kristen Bell or Emilia Clarke.

This — her appearance and youth and physical presence — seems to be incongruent with who she actually is. It’s not at all, of course. She is, again, a terrible fucking person. (Do not forget this.) But everything America encourages us to believe about how terrible and dangerous people are supposed to look and sound (not like Tomi Lahren) and the type of people people who look like Tomi Lahren are supposed to be (not terrible and dangerous) suggests otherwise.

This particular strain of socialization also ignores history. Tomi Lahrens are directly responsible for false arrests, beatings, whippings, lynchings, and even executions. If you watch the footage of Ruby Bridges desegregating William Frantz Elementary, or Ernest Green, Elizabeth Eckford, Jefferson Thomas, Terrence Roberts, Carlotta Walls LaNier Minnijean Brown, Gloria Ray Karlmark, Thelma Mothershed, and Melba Pattillo Beals desegregating Little Rock Central High, you’ll see dozens of Tomi Lahrens on the front lines, clutching signs, hurling stones, and spewing hate; their pretty little blonde fucking faces twisted, evil, and cruel.

But their looks have granted them the privilege of consideration. Sometimes even kindness. (And sometimes even cupcakes.) Because women that young, that blonde, that petite just can’t possibly also be that hateful. It’s unfathomable that they could genuinely be this vile and wicked. So maybe a conversation might sway them. Or an invitation to a show. Or a hug. Or a drink. Or a date even. Or a dick inside of them. Or, shit, maybe even having a kid with them might do it. It never does, of course. Never, ever, ever, ever, ever. But that doesn’t stop us from trying. (If it’s not obvious already, “us” in this context is “Black men.”)

While both history and the present inform us that we should be impervious to whichever charms we believe they possess — that our lives can literally depend on refusing to be seduced by them — we still allow it to happen. We still want to acknowledge and engage them. We still want to be nice to them. Perhaps with the hope that they’ll acknowledge and engage us in return. But all this does is validate them. It gives them credibility for engaging us; which, in the eyes of their friends and fans and followers, is effectively and bravely slumming. It promotes their brands and boosts their platforms. It buys them more airtime and unlimited bleach. It provides them an alibi for their hate. Because Tomi Lahren can’t really be racist if she’s getting drinks with Trevor and mean mugging with Charlamagne. Look how fun she looks!

And when we allow that to happen, we’re not brave. We’re not sober. We’re not attempting to find a common ground. We’re not extending an olive branch. We’re not being the bigger person. We’re not taking one for the team. We’re not even genuine. We’re just the help.

  • Ty Ellison

Although Trevor Noah did a good job of interviewing her, I wish the Daily Show wouldn’t have given legitimacy to Coultergeist II, aka The TomiKnocker (apologies to Stephen King). Lahren is nipping at the cloven hooves of the Original Recipe Coultergeist, Ann Coulter.

    • mr. steal your costco samples

man for as “biased” as the MSM is, they been running full body blonde conservative spreads with some variation of “SHE’S PROVOCATIVE! SHE GETS THE PEOPLE *GOING*” since at least 2004 with Anne.

        • Epsilonicus

          He is controlling the narrative.

          • Me

He’s playing both sides of the fence. Agitate and soothe.

            • Epsilonicus

And that is controlling the narrative. And he became a trending topic on Twitter, his interviews are popping. His podcasts are gonna get a spike and that makes him more marketable. He is wrong for what he did but he is going to spin in a way that he wins.

              • Me

I get what you’re saying. I just don’t think it falls under controlling the narrative. I do think he’s optimizing his hits, but I think he’s just going along with whatever gets him there. To me, controlling the narrative still sticks to one avenue, just in a calculated way. He’s ruffling feathers for hits AND backpedaling for hits. No control is required to do that.

                • Epsilonicus

I think the backpedal was intentional. He knew folks were gonna come for him. I think he knew the deal and played everyone who got rowdy and upset

                  • Me

                    Hmm. Ok. I’ll take that.

  • AsamiSato

I thought that Trevor Noah was a genius in how he handled the interview on the Daily Show. And my reaction was confirmed when I looked at the comments about this interview on Glenn Beck’s FB page (which I follow because I want to know what the enemy is saying). Even the conservative assholes who love Trump thought that she looked stupid in that interview. So Trevor set her up perfectly to look like a dumb idiot to anyone with half a brain cell working. And the format and his tone made it more likely that people from the ‘other side’ would actually watch the interview and maybe see for themselves how weak these ideas are when challenged. From my perspective (as someone from a small nearly all white town where people actually believe this bs), I think that’s a good thing.

    • Cleojonz

He was so calm! This same interview with Jon Stewart would have played so differently.

      • Blueberry01

Did you ever see Anderson Cooper interview Kelly Ann Conway before the election?

        Calm and calculated…

        • Cleojonz

I can’t watch Kelly Ann Conway for more than 3 minutes but I like Anderson Cooper’s interview style as well. Not combative, but he WILL challenge you.

          • Blueberry01

            Exactly.

  • Me

The one thing I need folks to stop doing is calling people like Tomi ignorant. The woman is anything but ignorant. I watched her interview with Trevor, and it’s painfully obvious that EVERYTHING that comes out of her mouth is purposeful. The reality is that her intended audience is people who hate liberals and minorities. When I saw all those articles come out about how Trevor schooled her on his show, all I kept thinking is how he DID NOT. All he did was expand her platform beyond facebook to mainstream, which is the reason she agreed to do all of these shows in the first place. She isn’t doing this media tour to be open to changing her opinions. Her mission is to reach the parts of her audience that don’t know about her yet, and to ALSO GET DISSENTERS TO START WATCHING HER. So while we sit back and boo every time she opens her mouth or breaks bread with a black man, she increases her viewership, cashes more paychecks, and spreads her message. The lady is not ignorant. Some of us are just gullible.

    • Epsilonicus

“All he did was expand her platform beyond facebook to mainstream, which is the reason she agreed to do all of these shows in the first place”

When you get more burn on FB than many mainstream news shows, you are probably already mainstream.

      • Me

She may be “mainstream” in terms of people knowing who she is, but her paychecks aren’t, and that’s the objective in this capitalist country.

        • Epsilonicus

They brought her on because she is gonna make them ad dollars pop. She is gonna bring liberal and conservatives eyes to videos and get them replayed. In many ways you could say Daily Show needed her more than she needed them.

          • Me

Nah. The way I see it, TDS will get a one time short term spike in viewings of that ONE episode, then most of her fans that tuned in will go back to her platform to continue watching. Whereas, she will now have both an increase in fans that didn’t know about her AND haters that want to shout her down at every turn tuning in to stay up to date on her latest most inflammatory comment. It’s the Trump effect (meaning he kept getting free airtime just b/c folks wanted to be the first to tear him down, which only ended up benefiting him in the end).

          • Brooklyn_Bruin

Everybody banked, but black folks and America at large

      • Mr. Gundam

Actually I think it’s the other way around,

Before the interview no one care about the daily show after Trevor took over. Rawstory, buzzfeed, and the gawker network didn’t post about daily show, on top of the fact it was losing viewership everywhere. Tomi saved the show by doing what Jon and O’reilly did in the past.

It just sucks cause for white people this is a hypothetical conversation (auguring with racist family members over thanksgiving or christmas) that makes them feel better about how they view the world. While the OTHER (POCs, gays, trans, immigrants, poor ppl) have to go through a life or death struggle.

I feel like a monopoly piece rather than a player (someone who gets to roll the dice)

        • Ima Man-In-Adress

          Delusional.

    • Sigma_Since 93

“The reality is that her intended audience is people who hate liberals and minorities”

And that echo chamber is large

      • Janelle Doe

        And will double down

      • Me

Absolutely. I wish liberals would stop acting like our moral browbeating is swaying any of them. There is no amount of reason or compassion or friendly debating that will change the way the feel about people they’ve already decided to hate. Thinking there’s a such thing as taking them to task is as silly as thinking you can change your S.O. to be who you really want to date.

Pathetic. The opposite of love is not hate, it is indifference. Most white people honestly just want nothing to do with black people…and for good reason. 72% of black children born out of wedlock, rampant gun crime, senseless acts of violence, thug ‘culture,’ disgusting vile crap rap, who wants anything to do with such a pathetic ‘culture’?

“When I saw all those articles come out about how Trevor schooled her on his show, all I kept thinking is how he DID NOT.”
Yes. She does not care. Will not care. Has no desire to care. Furthermore, doesn’t have to care as it is being proven now. No conversation or friendship will sway her. Her money is in hate and she is making bank.

    • Freebird

Kind of how Trump won the nomination.

      • Blueberry01

        Exactly.

…and he STILL has not come put to denounce the spike in hate crimes…

        • Ima Man-In-Adress

LIAR. Unlike Shillary, who said NOTHING while cities were being burned and rioters looted and destroyed, Trump looked directly at the camera and said if anyone was doing anything bad in association with him to STOP IT. You are delusional and not very bright.

          • Blueberry01

A clip that was not aired in that TV segment, but instead was cut out because some felt it didn’t represent his overarching message at the time.

However, I’m actually referring to the spike in hate crimes that have occurred in schools and public places across America – not the reaction to the election. (Although, it’s interesting how Trump supporters STATED beforehand that they’d revolt if he wasn’t elected.)

:leans in and whispers: HRC didn’t win the election so she’s not going to be president. Thus, she’s not going to be expected to make unifying messages in this country.

          • syrup

Bannon is still his top adviser, right? Right.

    • Kris

This is why I was so disappointed that he put her on his show. This is just more normalizing, spreading and giving of new injections to the further spreading of the white supremacy disease.

      • Epsilonicus

The problem is not that most people agree with her. They don’t. Its just that the majority of folks who disagree with her dont put in the leg work to manipulate and use the media in the same way.

        • Blueberry01

What do you suggest that they do?

    • This is so true because I’ve NEVER heard of this girl until this whole Charlamagne thing came about. Now I’m curious about what she’s been saying on the shows/news that she’s normally on, but I refuse to add numbers to her audience so I’m not even trying to look that mess up. Nope.

      • Me

Same here. I heard of her once before in relation to Beyonce, but then I dismissed the whole story. Then she pops back up, and everybody’s talking about she got dragged. Again I dismissed it, but I could tell folks were going to be all up and through her FB feed looking for a fight, and she clearly doesn’t care because she’s just looking for a check and a good laugh. I’m content assuming that there’s absolutely nothing redeeming in any of her posts that needs my attention, so I’ll continue to dismiss her — especially since I learned a long time ago that I don’t actually have to go to her page to find out what she says since plenty of people are going to write about her just for the opportunity to shut her down. If anything noteworthy comes up, I’m sure I’ll hear about it through other avenues that don’t cause me to contribute to her bank account.

    • outlyer06

exactly!!!! she is no different from the rush limbughs, ann colters and sarah palins…these people aren’t stupid they know exactly how to pander to their target audience. they know exactly what buttons to push to get us talking about them…and we fall for it all the time with our fake kneegrow outrage that’ll be forgotten in 2 weeks

By its definition, I’m not in a position to be racist. But you can call me prejudice or discriminatory…

    • agreed. at this point we’re not longer shutting down her arguments. We’re training her to be on the big stage. In four years she’s going to be a heavy political figure and it’s because of moves like this. She’ll be seen as brave for willing to talk with black people even though she hates black people. She’ll be used to learning how to talk around arguments and ignore facts off the fly. We’re just making her stronger.

    • Thank you, it’s so irritating that some people don’t see the obvious noise generating PR/marketing effort that she’s engaged in and how she’s using racism outrage to fuel that.
