Is It Me or Has The Blackosphere Run Out Of Things To Talk About?

That's totally racism! She should leave him! Be strong sister. Beyonce teaches us this!

That’s totally racism! She should leave him! Be strong sister. Beyonce teaches us this!

This ain’t funny so don’t you dare laugh, but I think that Black thought has run out of ideas. And I’m not talking the rapper from the Roots crew. No, I’m talking the majority component of Black conversation starters and “influencers”. Yes, the Ebony’s and Essence’s and Clutch’s* and Madame Noires*, etc.

Basically, the places that Black folks congregate to discuss Black issues. VSB included though I’m going to give us a TOTALLY non-biased pass since we’re a two-man deep operation. But it seems like, actually, it IS like, there are four topics worthy of talking about in the pages of Blackness – relationships, race, pop culture, and self-empowerment.

I’ve perused all of the Black intelligentsia pages – and I realize thats probably a misnomer – and there’s very little to do with politics and health or anything that isn’t purely opinion based. This isn’t to say that I don’t think that Black folks don’t have opinions on politics or finances (Black Enterprise is one good source), but it does seem that we stay as far away as possible from those topics in some of the most popular sources for Black “material.”

Now, I’d be intentionally ignoring the elephant in the room if I didn’t point out that those sites are largely (actually totally) geared towards women and maybe the vast majority of women who might read those sites couldn’t give two f*cks with a soda on the side of a partridge in a pear tree about partisan politics, sequesters, or anything in the political realm that doesn’t include the words Michelle Obama.

It’s possible that I’m completely ignoring the impact that sites like The Root and Huff Post Black Voices have on the community at large. Either that or I only follow and pay attention to the wrong pubs, but it really does seem like no matter where I go I see the same ho the exact same ideas and posts written different ways are presented. When I visit some of my more enjoyable mainstream (read white) sites, they’re chock full of all types of topics. I mean you can read posts about the role mice play in the World Cup. Or how electricity totally f*cks up the game for ladybugs in Santo Domingo. I’m not even saying that all of the things I read are good, interesting, or worthy of reading. But there are a slew or random but fresh ideas on lots of fresh and random topics.

Maybe its just that in the Blackosphere, there aren’t a lot of larger sites dedicated to news and thought in the same way that a Daily Beast or Huff Post or Slate can be. Even on sites like The Root, it seems like all the posts bottleneck right back into the racial component. Which isn’t wrong per se. There’s nothing wrong with that. And it’s important to have the facilitators of such conversations making sure that those angles are always pursued. But we still can’t seem to get past the Big Four.

Of course, there’s always the side of the argument that shows that I’m not even close to being accurate. That there are sites out there tackling all of the important issues of the day and adding new and insightful ideas to Internet and catalog of Black thought. Which is possible, but really, I don’t think that’s the case. I’m starting to think that for the most part we like to talk about those things because its one area where our opinion is all that counts and it doesn’t require being overly informed on any topic. And if you’re attempting to appeal to the most people at one time, then broad simple topics is the bread and butter to keep folks coming back. Even here at VSB, that argument can be made.

Maybe, Black folks online really only have a few things to talk about. Or maybe those of us online creating the conversations don’t think the audiences care about anything else. Or maybe OJ didn’t do it but did it at the same damn time.

I don’t really know.

But I do have to wonder, have we run out of things to talk about in the Blackosphere?

Talk to me.

I would tend to agree with you. It appears that most sites are in a reactive mode which allows for the event to dictate the discussion instead of the author stretching us and creating something that spawns a dicussion outside of the big four.

I have to agree..It appears most urban blogs do seem to center their subject matter around the same four topics. I was actually discussing with my friend about the whole “black twitter” situation and how if something pops off in relation to brown people, all the bloggers simultaneously tweet about the matter at hand. And I can get the full story by reading through the different bloggers perspective of the events.. But yeah it does appear politics, and finances are not popular in the urban blogosphere.

Not enough black republicans to have a balanced discussion. The web would be just like FOX, MSNBC, and CNN strutting Richard Steele and Armstrong Williams out over and over and over again to represent the other point of view.

    short answer: yes.

long answer: no, we just need to branch out a little more. for instance, how well did your recent blerd post do vs one on relationships (or anything that pits men vs women).

while many writers write when inspired, some sites post articles they know will drive page views/comments/increase revenues. i try to stay away from sites like those.

i also tend to read my blogs via google reader, so im not distracted by pop-ups/ads and tempted to read the comment section (i go directly to the site if i know i want to leave props/comment).

this post would be a good opportunity for people to share what they are reading. its a great way to be introduced to something they might not have on their radar.

another good way to branch out is to check the black web blog awards and check out blogs under different categories than what you are used to. might learn somethin!

“while many writers write when inspired, some sites post articles they know will drive page views/comments/increase revenues. i try to stay away from sites like those.”

Yeah, it gets pretty bad at those kind of sites. Clutch does that more and more. They are always sure to get tons of hits on any post that are thinly veiled Black male bashing posts. I know they need hits but it gets trite. But, I think that being a commercial site can lead to lowest common denominator type stuff for revenue sake.

      • http://www.youtube.com/user/pervertedalchemist1?feature=mhee Perverted Alchemist

When I used to post there, I noticed there was a pattern with certain writers (See: Britni Danielle and the worst offender Kristen West Savali). Their articles alone brought out the worst in people as well as the worst people (and you know who I speak of- no need to name names…)

Whaaaat? You know you got to hit us up when you come.

  • Malik

Well it’s because a large portion of Blackosphere is built on humor and broad personalities. It’s kinda difficult to get that Dr. Amos Wilson or Harold Cruse type dialogue and discussions going when there is a relentless need to always provide some sort of levity. It doesn’t help that readers aren’t really comfortable broaching certain discussions. It’s the writer’s duty to present that material in some sort of way that gathers people. Not all at once, but building on top of it.

    • Malik

Additionally, there are still other ways we can talk about the conversations we already as having instead of rehashing the same things over and over again in slightly different ways.

    • Rewind

Honestly, you can’t force people to be smarter. So we have to become more creative to garner attention. The problem is, as easy as it is to be creative in this day and age, it is consequently just as difficult, since almost everybody else has the same dilemmia and has the same amount of access to the resources to be heard as you.

  • http://www.alltherightquestions.com Justmetheguy

Yeah P.J. I noticed this months ago and figured it was for the same reasons you named. Especially this:

“I’m starting to think that for the most part we like to talk about those things because its one area where our opinion is all that counts and it doesn’t require being overly informed on any topic. And if you’re attempting to appeal to the most people at one time, then broad simple topics is the bread and butter to keep folks coming back. Even here at VSB, that argument can be made.”

Couldn’t have said it better (I’m sure Obsidian will love today’s topic too. Especially for the that first sentence in the above quote)

“Maybe, Black folks online really only have a few things to talk about. Or maybe those of us online creating the conversations don’t think the audiences care about anything else. ”

I agree with the 2nd sentence. It’s the same thing with rap music nowadays. The rappers and execs are scared to “experiment” with less cliche topics and more diverse subject matter so they follow the “formula that works” (either that or they’re just playin a cruel endless joke on us all). Can’t blame em for that (the formula, not the joke) because people are not only creatures of habit, but they’re only interested in discussing what they care about and these 4 topics are battle tested and consistently outperform the more specific and unorthodox topics.

I think black folks have a lot to talk about but don’t expect each other to be able to relate or to want to talk about anything outside the “Big Four” so we stick to “safe” topics (I’m speaking in person as well as online). Maybe a lot of us are just too passionate and involved with the Big Four to give much thought to anything else…that doesn’t apply to me, but I’m sure it does for a lot of ppl. At the end of the day we only have so much attention to donate to different causes.

    • Kema

“Maybe a lot of us are just too passionate and involved with the Big Four to give much thought to anything else…”

Applies to me! Lol.. but seriously many other topics we all agree on so it becomes an amen corner.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/pervertedalchemist1?feature=mhee Perverted Alchemist

I would love to see a Black run blog that could talk about something other than their usual stuff. However, considering most of the Black blog’s demographics, that isn’t likely to happen anytime in the near future.

    • Rewind

I don’t believe that we are so passionate about the Big 4 that we don’t talk about anything else…because we do in our everyday lives. We talk about politics, the economy, parenting skills, the change in generations, reality vs. dreams, etc…we do that with our friends and family. I don’t think worldly topics are dedicated just for loved ones, I think we can have those same conversations with absolute strangers and still enjoy ourselves.

      • http://obsidianraw.bravejournal.com Obsidian

The problem isn’t that we discuss the Big Four; its that we act as if we’re a time warp with it. As I’ve said in my remarks below, we don’t introduce anything novel at all, and in fact we as a group conduct a kind of Orwellian crimethink-prevention scheme that more or less polices us…and at the same time, hampers us, from getting anything done.

        O.

    1. If we had as much privalege as Whites, we could leisurely talk about unorthodox subject matter without a care in the world as well. But we constantly talk about subject matter that gears towards the perception of Blacks in this society because we don’t. So…there’s that….

    2. Black people are more diverse than given credit for. There are a myriad of subjects that, unless the blog was created to discuss that specific subject (like movies, Naruto**, etc), won’t get talked about because it won’t draw a lot of people. The Big Four are topics that, regardless of their background, most Blacks seem to be interested in discussing.

    3. I honestly don’t mind the repeat topics. They’re interesting to have and I learn something new every time. Which is great because that’s why I engage in these discussions in the first place.
