Phylicia Rashad Defends Bill Cosby, And That Sound You Hear Is Shit Hitting The Fan

 Andrew H. Walker/Getty Images

If you ever wanted to know exactly how “shit hitting the fan” sounds, it’s the noise Black America’s making this morning as news that everyone’s single favorite person ever, Phylicia Rashad, has come out in defense of Bill Cosby, vehemently disputing the claims that her former co-star sexually assaulted 20-something women.

Rashad said this was all an orchestrated campaign to keep the 77-year-old comedian off the air.

“Forget these women,” she said. “What you’re seeing is the destruction of a legacy. And I think it’s orchestrated. I don’t know why or who’s doing it, but it’s the legacy. And it’s a legacy that is so important to the culture … Someone is determined to keep Bill Cosby off TV, and it’s worked. All his contracts have been canceled.”

And that’s all I’m going to say about that.

  • Yonnie

Having never heard of “Showbiz 411” until yesterday, I choose not to believe this statement. “Forget those women?” Nah. Not Ms. Rashad. I can understand not wanting to believe something so vile about someone you love and respect. But I can’t see a very intelligent woman like her saying something so horrid. Debbie Allen said the allegations were “hard to believe” and asked “Why now?” (*eye roll*). I would expect Phylicia Rashad to say something along those lines. I’ma need to see a video before I believe she said this.

    • camilleblu

      “Forget those women?”

i feel the same way – that just seems like such an *off* statement to come from her.

      • Andrea

It sounds really “On” to me. Roger Friedman was “On” it about getting page clicks today.

        • camilleblu

          ah…yes, you’re right.

    • Andrea

Yes. I’m gonna wait for an actual statement from Phylicia. I would like to hear that fragment of a sentence in context.
Something tells me I won’t have to wait long since “Showbiz whoever” has forced her to comment on the matter.

      • MeridianBurst

I looked for the video of it when I heard. I’m waiting for the footage and I think it will take that before it really sets in for me.

    • I’m inclined to agree with you. According to the short biography at the end of the post on “Showbiz 411” “Roger Friedman began his Showbiz411 column in April 2009 after 10 years with Fox News.” I need to hear it from Ms. Rashad herself and a more credible source.

    • bertamae

Many things are based on how we choose to hear. Her saying forget these women means she feels that this is larger than them and that this is being orchestrated by someone else. So to her they do not matter because they are pawns.

That is what she means by forget these women.

We really have to disconnect from reactionary mode and start “thinking”.

Anyone who has studied PR knows a PR campaign when they hear and see it. That is what happened with this situation. These allegations with Bill Cosby have literally been floating around for about 25 years. The difference is that we had a more respectable media and media outlets did not earn their money by click bait.

That is what Debbie Allen meant by “Why Now”

This is not new. It is just that we are a more gullible society.

If we take a step back and stop trying so hard to be keyboard warriors and express outrage when we are told to be outraged.

Some people use the noodle that is in between their ears and…think.

      • Andrea

Does this mean I am using my noodle if I accept this 1 writer’s version of a conversation as fact? I am very familiar with PR. I am also very familiar with writers.

        • bertamae

I am just saying that we need to question things and not let ourselves fall into a narrative. The person who interviewed Ms. Rashad has come out and said that she is correct, people are taking what she said out of context.

          http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/01/08/phylicia-rashad-misquoted-cosby_n_6435776.html

Also, is it a true statement that over 25 women have accused Bill Cosby of sexual assault?

          • CourtneyrrR

We learned about Questioning things in j.r high school. The moment you stop questioning Authority, which is your right, is the moment that they will rewrite everything within their favor. I don’t know if he is guilty or not but, NO ONE is asking them the hard questions that need to be asked. The same thing could be said for Cosby. I need to know the ENTIRE picture and I’m sorry, we don’t have it yet before I can say that someone is guilty. You have many INNOCENT people, sitting in jail right now based off of what was said etc. Many people who died in prison, based off of lies. This is why , something of this magnitude, has to be dealt with appropriately and not tried in the court of opinions or the court of the internet. It’s not a laughing matter between both parties involved.

      • CourtneyrrR

Thank you for the intelligent post.

    • camilleblu

“When he married her I didn’t mind, but then she got
pregnant and I didn’t want Cliff and Clair to have another kid. So we
had to hide her body, which took me away from — took Cliff away from
touching her and playing with her because I didn’t want the audience to
      see that.”

      just.ew.

      • miss t-lee

        So bizarre.

      • Pinks

Right?! You didn’t mind that he married her? All sorts of “nucca, whet?” in that statement alone.

        • camilleblu

girl…but how he caught himself mid-sentence…

So we had to hide her body, which took me away from — took Cliff away from touching her and playing with her.

          disgusting

      • jimbo

Not really, from a writer’s point of view. You want a character to have a certain image in the mind of the viewer, and it seems to me he’s saying that his real life respect for her as a mother made him hesitant to treat her on camera as the character’s romantic partner physically. That’s typical of male attitudes toward mothers, though also reflective his own failure as an actor.

        • camilleblu

i disagree. i feel like he really, really said was that he enjoyed *touching her and playing with her* – as in he was getting his jollies on the low, but once she ruined it for him once she got pregnant – he was no longer attracted to her. kinda like a predator that likes them until they turn 11…after that, he’s no longer attracted bc they are *too old*.

          • Rachmo

            I just shuddered

        • afronica

If he had said, “It wasn’t my plan for the Huxtables to have another kid, so we had to write and block around that,” I’d buy what you’re saying. Writers imagine full and detailed lives for their characters. When the actors portraying them go off script, it’s challenging.

But the squeamishness that comes through in his comment makes me think he’s giving an intellectual reason for a visceral reaction. What you read as “respect for her as a mother” strikes me as “mother equals non-sexual being.” That kind of attitude is so funny to me because how else did she get to be a mother? Most telling is his inability to get that old thing back after she had the child. His thrill was gone. If the “problem” was that the actor took her character off script, once the baby’s out, why did Cosby still have a problem? Issues and levels, I think.

          • camilleblu

            we so >>>>>HERE<<<<< we there.

    • Angel Baby

WTH is that running?! It looks like an octopus and a turkey. SMH

      • miss t-lee

        I’d be lying if I said I knew…lol

        • Angel Baby

lol girl why you using images and don’t know what they are?! That’s some **** I would do! bwahahahahahaha too funny

          • miss t-lee

            HEE HEE!

      • Lea Thrace

It is an octopus. Mimic Octopus (Thaumoctopus mimicus) to be exact. Has a really awesome ability to mimic other species and behaviors not native to it. It’s one of my faves!

        http://youtu.be/t-LTWFnGmeg

        • miss t-lee

*shooting star* The more you know!
          Thanks, chica.

        • OSHH

I knew they were smart but this one on some genius level, I love Octopus too.

          • camilleblu

you know what? i just saw a video the other day of a man that put an octopus into a glass jar filled with water with the lid on it, and then set the jar inside a tank of water. that octopus unscrewed the lid from inside the jar to escape.

            • Lea Thrace

Yeah. I love that one. Octopi as super intelligent particularly when you consider that most of their nervous system functions arent even controlled by a brain per se. They fascinate me.

I’ll still eat some good calamari and sushi tho. I’m a paradox wrapped in an enigma. #shruglife.

              • camilleblu

                lol…i’m so down for sushi…

sn: have you ever unexpectedly rolled up on an octopus in the ocean irl? i did once and damb near drowned..scared the shyt out of me, lol.

        • Angel Baby

Wow then WTH did it see moving like the first gif in the water ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! I swear I love water but the Ocean is so eerily mysterious! Ahhhhhh!!!!

    • Another reminder to myself that I don’t know these folks.*

*Yet I think Wolverine and Kermit the Frog are real.

      • ED

First thing I thought of when I saw this post! We don’t know these people!

        • That wall between characters and those that portray just keeps getting thicker and thicker. I don’t even want to know what kind of fucked up things Dabnis Brickey has to say about this.

          • miss t-lee

Someone has to find Dabnis and interview him.

            • WE NEED TO KNOW.

            • Has anyone asked Elvin what he thinks about all this?

              • miss t-lee

                Or Martin?

                • When Rudy’s friend Peter found out, did he run out the house and head home?

                  • miss t-lee

Mayne! I loved Peter’s chunky run.

                  • Val

How could you all forget about Rudy’s friend Bud not Bud?!

                    • Bud will get back to us, he just has to talk to his brother first.

                    • Val

                      Lol. Right.

                    • Bud does not have time to comment on women’s issues, his chauvinist big brother told him to pay us no mind.

              • Deeds

                What do the grandparents think?

                • Did anyone poll Cliff’s obstetrics patients?

              • How about Elvin and the lame daughter’s twins? What do they think?

      • Andrea

The guy who wrote the article lost his job at Fox over Wolverine. I think Wolverine is real too.

  • ?

Im not surprised AT ALL. Everyone on that show strikes me as all about respectability politics just like Bill Cosby. I low key expect them all to feel this way…except my sis in my head Lisa Bonet.

    • PivotTable

Lisa Bonet will not stand for this shit. That’s why she quit that bish in the first place.

  • Freebird

The evil men do in this world is sometimes/many times cosigned by the women in their life.

    • camilleblu

      truth

Sad but true. It’s like those momma’s who KNOW their baby is the debil but will swear on a stack of bibles that he is a “good kid”

      • Freebird

when a young person gets murdered where im at and the young man responsible is caught (and everyone around the way know mookie did it) , i often wait for his mama to talk about how he was a good kid and wanted to be an environmentalist.

BOL!!! Environmentalist just kilt me dead!!

  • LJK

“What you’re seeing is the destruction of a legacy. And I think it’s orchestrated.” Come again?

I’d like to think the Claire Huxtable we all love and know wouldn’t have accepted this from Heathcliff…but Claire is a figment of Bill Cosby’s imagination.

LOL awe I miss these types of shows. Remember the episodes where she started speaking Spanish?! I just loved her.

Or remember the movie “Polly” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzh6_IDf10Y?!?! That used to be one of my favorite movies when I was young!

      • This is my all-time favorite movie. I just knew that I was going to grow up and marry Jimmy Bean.

        • Angel Baby

LOL these types of movies with Black synchronized dance steps and joyful singing or stepping is what made me want to be in a soro when I was young! Ah to be young again with all the possibilities! LOL

    • CourtneyrrR

lol. I know so many black women like this. Give and take 50-50 :) I love how heathcliff just shuts the heck up. lol

      Much respect to Ms Rashad.

    • CourtneyrrR

*waits for folks who took time to complain about coverage of reality shows to provide substantive commentary on this*

      *sings*

have i told you lately that i love you????

    • BreezyX2

      Hey Bew *blows kiss*

    • Agatha Guilluame

Hey baby girl. How’re you feeling today?

      • camilleblu

        lolololol…yew ain’t shyt.

      • pretty girl

        lmao!!

    • PunchDrunkLove

Why, what are YOU waiting on? Someone needs to re-write the rules of what folks can and can’t do cause somehow folks have things twisted. People can engage in what they deem convo worthy. Some issues for some people may run a bit too deep, some folks take offense and take it straight gutter if you’re on opposite ends….as we’ve witnessed lynch mobdom, so forth and so on. Why would a person want to bring substantive dialog when there’s no real exchange??

‘Member the chick being told eff you and all kinds of other derogatory suggestions on Cosby??? Don’t remember? Go back and read. Okay then, we keep it simple and agree where we can….blatant ignornace = reality tv

      • Rachmo

        What are you saying here?

        • PunchDrunkLove

          What I just said….

And on that note…..later gator. Some (not all) of y’all sitting on “stay ready” is just ridiculous. Gone back to lurking #staysoutoftheconstantfray

          • Agatha Guilluame

No wait Punch…what do you think Sham was implying/saying…because based on your response to her…I think you think she meant something she didn’t…

            • PunchDrunkLove

Mybe I should get off ready for the “stay ready”….ya think? lol If I’m wrong I apologize :)

That “stayready” was for the Rachmo chick…I ain’t taking that back

              • Rachmo

What is this stay ready business? Is this like “on fleek?”

              • That “Rachmo chick” asked for clarity and you went from 0 to 100…..but nevermind…..

and please stop tryna make fetch happen.

              • Agatha Guilluame

Okay, let’s walk this back. Did you feel Sham’s comment was a shot at you? Or the counselor chick from the Cosby post?

Because I think she was just referencing that weirdo from yesterday’s Love and Hip Hop post.

                • Rachmo

Aaaand this sums up my question. I was confused how Cosby and LHHNY were intertwined.

          • Rachmo

I’m not even being snarky. Are you saying you don’t like reality TV? I am for real wanting to innerstand.

          • Rachmo

I’m even more confused. Stay ready for what?

          • Nawl but seriously, we’re having a hard time understanding your stance, purpose, or point in your comment. I read it 18 times and I still dont get if youre agreeing with Sham or not.

            • PunchDrunkLove

              LOLOLOL…I know boo, I know

              • Well if you dont have the time to make yourself clear then your point couldnt have been that important. Ah well.

          • Agatha Guilluame

Oh shyt. You posted this an hour ago but I’m only now seeing this comment. I was so lost on the back and forth between you and Rach but now I get it.

            You’re absolutely right though. There are a few of us that “stay ready”, myself included. In fact, another VSS who also “stay’s ready” said this to me this morning, she said;

“If there is dragging duty we on it. Clowning, got that too. Aint shyt, jacking a post…yup. Random pop ups to cuss folks…why not. Subliminal comments…on fleek.”

            And another VSS (also part of the #stayreadycrew) replied;

            “And?”

            *does b-boy stance*

Listen, it’s not right. We’re terrible people. So like, if at some point, you felt ganged up on or your thin skin was torn up from a dragging…I’m sorry. Legitimately and sincerely.

I remember my first dragging (on here). It was me versus the VSB staff. It was brutal. I still have bruises from it. And I’m still salty about it (Sidenote: FUCK YOU PJ). So I get it. So if at some point Sham was an a$$hole to you, then somewhere in the deep wells of her heart, somewhere down deep, I’m sure she’s sorry too.

            Signed,
            Agie, VSB Diplomat

            • PunchDrunkLove

Lissen Agie, No back and forth between that Rach girl and me…I just walk away when she comes near me….it goes back a few posts…IJS
I get it. I’m okay with “stayready” when it’s what, I dunno, durty but funny and funny but not cutting. Stayready actually brings a certain element that keeps it funny. I just don’t like folks tryna take in there some other kinda way. Not my place though to tell folks how to be….so.. Imma hush here…lol
              That Shamgal is another.
Dragging is for those that wanna be initiated. I just wanna hang around, not get too close. At the end of the day, it’s all good. If hawt topics, I lurk, laugh, post (maybe), if not close the screen and turn on a movie while I work. I leave the office and head home. I ain’t taking it in my chest though to go blow for blow for blow for blow…Imma stop at some point and just leaves folks standing there.

      • camilleblu

to be fair…the chick from that cosby post came swinging hard straight out the gate. so, i’m not sure why it wouldn’t be expected that folks with feelings just as strong as her wouldn’t respond in kind.

        • PunchDrunkLove

Honestly, I didn’t think so…there’s been several posts on Cosby, so we could be speaking on two different topics. I agree though what happens when everyone have strong feelings and opinons.

          • camilleblu

oh, ok – we’re talking about the same post. the one where that chick said she was a counselor (or some shyt) and then said that if it wasn’t reported immediately at the time it didn’t happen, that it’s bc it was a lie. a guest told that girl fuck you bc she had been assaulted, but had not reported it for whatever reason. i thought the fuck you was valid in that particular instance bc you can’t negate what someone has experienced based off of whether or not their experience fits inside your box.

      • God Shammgod

I don’t know what your comment has to do with me addressing someone who says that we waste our time on reality TV only to be a ghost when we’re talking about issues in the black community (which they complained about in the first place).

You want to stand in your truth, which is an unpopular opinion, you don’t get to choose how folks receive it. You want to cape for a woman who rolled on the scene saying that the women’s statements weren’t valid because nobody had bothered to directly email her the reports filed against Cosby over the years then so be it. Again, asymptotic to the point I was making, but it sounds like you had some feelings you needed to get out, so feel free to sit on the e-couch and vent.

But say what you mean. Say that you feel some type of way when you say things and folks don’t like ’em. Don’t hide behind other peoples fights. That’s corny.

        • PunchDrunkLove

My point is…let folks be, stew in their own igorance, beliefs, whatevs. Dialog is one thing, dragging that dude’s comments from his social page and posting here is silly and ignorant. EQUALLY foolish. ‘Member yesterday? Didn’t your mama teach you trying to belittle reflects back on you??

All that other junk you posted today, I didn’t read….lol I don’t read…ever!! It’s just so neither here nor there for me. I’m still working, making mad mad money, living my life.

Quit showing out….K? I’m NOT impressed.

            • I wanna reply to this with a gif of ppl applauding, but I fear that would make me a “stay ready” so i wont…..Jury’s still out on wtf that means exactly, but better safe than sorry, yaknow?

  • Im just……what?

  • Val

This is causing me to have two opposing thoughts in my head. I must get rid of one of those thoughts in order to be able to process the magnitude of the unbelievability of what she said.

    • Rachmo

I haven’t written a real comment on this post bc I was processing and short circuited.

      • Val

I know, right. I’m still processing. But, like they say; eventually people will show you who they really are. I guess we’re all meeting the real Phylicia for the first time.

        • Rachmo

          Hi Phylicia :-(

  • Medium Meech

This may sound like sacrilege but I’ve always loved Claire but something about Phylicia Rashad rubbed me the wrong way. I love Debbie Allen, but something about Phylicia her always made me think she was the type to tell other women to disappear. Maybe all these people running to defend bill are motivated by the sound of their Cosby show royalty checks disappearing.

    • JAC

      You know it.

    • Val

“…motivated by the sound of their Cosby show royalty checks disappearing.”

      Something to ponder for sure.

    • You speak that truth Meechie. Tempestt, Elvin, Dabnis and little Peter are freaking out about #ThemChecks

    • pretty girl

Phylicia always came off as an uppity bitch. But she’s my bitch. And I love her.
