Hardest.Question.Ever.

This morning I found myself humming the words to singer Joe’s song “All The Things Your Man Won’t Do”.  This was a good song.  There’s no two ways about it.

But was it a great song?  I’m inclined to think that it had greatness potential.  But then it went away and nobody remembers that song unless its playing somewhere.  Just like Silk’s first album, Lose Control.  Everybody remembers their song “Meeting In My Bedroom” from their second (or third…whatever) album, but every damn song on Lose Control was top shelf, pal.

Unlike T.I.’s “Whatever You Like”…that’s not top shelf.  Ask L-O.  He’ll tell you.

But even those songs pale in comparison to some of the love songs of the 60s and 70s.  Bobby Caldwell’s “What You Won’t Do For Love” kicks rocks on most of the songs from the current crop note-wranglers.  So this got me to thinking.  And you know what happens when a brother like myself starts thinking.

I start pondering.  And thoughting.  And ruminating.

This evening I was driving back home from out in Maryland and R. Kelly’s song “Honey Love” came on.  Now that song was meant for gettin’ your Clarence Carter on.  But above all else, it was just a good song that seemed innocent enough.  But we all know that his mind was telling him nooooooooooo, but his body had the Verizon Network.  So I delved further and realized that R. Kelly is responsible for some of the greatest love songs of our generation (“Like That” is a personal favorite).

Another random thought:  Most of us wouldn’t be here if not for music.  Believe it or not, your parents probably got their monkeystroke on with some Isley Brothers “Between The Sheets” playing in the background.  They just don’t tell us so that they don’t ruin these songs for us.

So, now that you’ve firmly been taken to “so what’s the point” land – here is the point.  What is the best love song?  This is one of the hardest questions to answer because there have been so many love songs.  Hell, I can’t even come up with my own definitive greatest love song.

But I can tell you this, I do have one song that if a chick I was dating told me she didn’t like it, she’d have to go.  Like for real.  The song?

Con Funk Shun’s – Straight From The Heart.  I’d straight drop a chick if she told me the song wasn’t good.  I’d do the same with Donny Hathaway.

So people of VSB.com, who are celebrating this Friday like its your last, what is the best love song ever?  And similarly, is there a song that you’d cut somebody back for?  Basically, what’s “your” song?

(And don’t worry, I’m gonna be coming up with my own too.)

-VSB P aka THE ARSONIST aka TANGLE JIG P

By the way, in case you missed it, you can go and listen to me on Juice Radio with Miz D and “Real Talk Now” were I was a special guest for today’s Battle of the Sexes show.  We had a lot of fun and I got pretty ignant at some point, I’m sure.  Check it out here:  www.blogtalkradio.com/juiceradio

  1. Oh well, hello Kamakula. Seems like I’m on top 2nite *snicker*

Best love song is a toughie. But R. Kelly’s TP2 album got some great ones. (given, a bunch were great FREAK songs). I dont feel like digging deep 2nite. Will return with specifics in morn

Best heartbreak song: “Love Don’t Love Nobody” by the Spinners. That song is filled with angst.

    • Oh, ummm any song my Uncle Luffa V is panty-drop-inducing too. Well, BIG Uncle Luffa. Not the lil Luffa who’s curl ain’t… ain’t… quite curl all the way over.

      • LMAO @ Luvvie, why’d I hear Cedric in my head and see the visual of the circular motion with his index finger illustrating the rogue curl(s).

PJ, you’ve had the misfortune of meeting someone who is not down with Straight From The Heart? Where do you find these people? Just the idea of that is offensive. I’m mad I’m mad off a hypothetical situation lol.

So for love songs, since its late I will drop a few of my personal faves:

Anything by Sade, Love is Stronger than Pride is a great one.
Maxwell A woman’s Work owns one of my heartstrings
Lauryn Hill’s X Factor (as sad as it be, it be making you reflect and shyt)
Definitely anything by Big Luffa (air daps Luvvie)
Love, Need and Want You Ms. Patti
        Debra Laws Very Special

        • I love Very Special… I couldnt remember who sang it though and love need and want is on one of my numerous posts below… LOL my favorite love joints off the lauryn album where
NOthing even matters and Tell Him

        • Overit, I like your list…you can’t go wrong with Sade or Maxwell. Every time I watch that scene from Love & Basketball and hear that song, I tear up.

          • Girl I love that song. I def remember that scene in Love &Basketball too. Omar Epps/ Q’s a*s messing with our emotions and shyt. I also like the original by Kate Bush…but def listen to Maxwell’s more often.

    • hmm, so you’re noticing it’s a bit lonely up there. why don’t you come down and join me for a bit, i’ll have you singing the best love song ever ;)

    • I loved R. Kelly and I think he has some great songs.

But it’s hard to call them great when you consider he might be thinking about a 12 year old girl while singing them. :(

  2. “Forever, For Always, For Love”…Lalah Hathaway’s version, which I believe is much better than Mr. Vandross’, at least in my mind.
    “Baby Love” by Mother’s Finest
“Sunshine of Your Love” by Cream…don’t sleep on those last two cuz they are “unconventional” love songs. Peep those lyrics!

And every duet that Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell sang. I was playing that at work today, lip synching for the Marshmallows. They loved the show.

        • Wait… does that mean I can bring my tape or House Music….

“big booty snizzles, they think they are the ish….. let met me bang”

i was ova here practing my footworks ans errthang!

          • “aw sh*t, here we go, hititfromtheback, beat that h*e”

Upon reflection, those are some effed up lyrics, but my Wessside roots won’t let me sit still if I hear em

    • good job, Luvvie! i have most of these songs on my playlist. on wednesday i was randomly listening to Kirk’s “It’s Over Now” and thought to myself, “self you gotta add to this to the President Obama playlist”

  3. Broke up song – Love TKO, T.P.
Aint seen you in a long time song – Get Here
In Love Song – Loves Holiday, EWF

  4. AWWW Dayum PJ just 1? I mean I have different love songs for different moods.. I love Etta’s At last… but I also like Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls, All the man by Whitney Houston, LOve and need and want by Patti, Love makes things Happen, Pebbles and BAbyface, This time by Shanice and Kwame? Celine Dion Because you loved me, Mr Big Be with you, Cyndi Lauper Time after time, Guns and Roses Dont Cr, Meatloaf anything for love…and I havent eve touched the 60s and 70s ATlantis-Isley Brothers, Gently-Ready for the world……I mean

    • I am going to be ridiculed for this, but I can take the heat.

Listening to ribbon in the sky makes me wanna rip off my own ears and donate them joints to charity.

      I hate that song.

      • I am going to be ridiculed for this, but I can take the heat.

Listening to ribbon in the sky makes me wanna rip off my own ears and donate them joints to charity.

        I hate that song

to the corner for the night, van gogh!

      • It’s a Stevie Wonder song and as much as I’ve Stanned for Mr. Wonderful since ummmm…1973 (according to Mother n’ Daddy), it’s stereotypical. Stevie Wonder has 100 songs (at least) that are better.

        So, I feel you, Overit.

      • yes, you shall be ridiculed thusly. and um…

y’all are insane if you think Intro’s version is better. and i’m not even a huge Stevie Stan.

however, for those in DC…i’ll let you all know when it is, but be on the look out for the DJ Spinna & Bobbito Wonder-full party that we do at Liv. It’s Stevie music ALL NIGHT LONG and I promise you it may be one of the best parties you’ll ever go to.

        cross my heart.

      • I hate that song
        but
        “Rocket Love” is the joint

And hands down all time best baby making music masterpiece is
        Marvin’s
        “I Want You”
        If it’s playin’
        you gone do the
        whole damned thang.

      • My favorite is Master Blaster Jammin, with That Girl and Part Time Lover coming in right behind it.

        • my fave stevie joints (in addition to the ones already listed) are Master Blaster, Signed sealed delivered, My Cherie Amore, If you really love me, For once in my life, Do I do, Sir Duke and these three words.

        • “That Girl” is one of my theme songs. It’s what I play when I’m getting ready to go out, because it ups my Sassy-ness by 84%. I love a song that sounds like it was written to/for/about me.

I can’t even name a favorite Stevie Wonder song. I have to name albums when it comes to him. My favorite Stevie Wonder album is “Fulfillingness First Finale”, w/”Talking Book” a very close second.

    • “Overjoyed” – Man… This song right here… Stevie was plotting “Over time, I’ve been building my castle of love…” You know how long it takes to build a castle. That’s what you call commitment and dedication. Let this be an example.

And he did all this work before this chick even knew he was trying to get at her. So maybe he was a little stalkerish. But it’s a castle and you don’t do all that work to just skeet on the sheets when no one is home. That’s some forever type schitt.

      • And he did all this work before this chick even knew he was trying to get at her. So maybe he was a little stalkerish. But it’s a castle and you don’t do all that work to just skeet on the sheets when no one is home. That’s some forever type schitt.

LMAO yes it is… yes it is BUT I love that song…his version and the mary j one from the Michael Jordan commercials…

        • “….I love that song…his version and the mary j one from the Michael Jordan commercials…”

Yep, I’d be glued to the screen everytime it came on.

      • ….that at any given moment could be the absolute bestest in the world.

so true, i love most songs mentioned on here, but it really depends on the mood. any one of them could be my fav at one point.

    • My favorite Donny Hathaway song is “Love, Love, Love”. It’s a mid-tempo beat, but its still so romantic. Those lyrics…*sigh*.

      • Donny anything kills it, but in “A Song For You” lies one of the deepest most profound declarations of love that ever heard.
“I love you in a place where there’s no space or time.”

Loving someone on that level….I just can’t explain it, but I love that song, and long to give and recieve that level of love from a woman one day.

    • i know i said that i’d dead anybody who didn’t love “straight from the heart” but folks that know me understand my love for donny. like i’m pained by his suicide…that happened months before i was even born. that brotha had a voice from heaven. he never made a single bad song…not one.

      brotha just gets spiritual.

  5. oh and Endless Love-lionel and Diana
    Your song-Elton John
Nothing compares to U -sinead oconnor
    Eric Clapton Wonderful Tongiht
    No Doubt-Dont Speak
    LL Cool- I need Love
Roberta Flack The first time ever I saw your face
Boys II Men Bended Knee, Ill make love to you, Trying Times, PLease dont go,

  6. Sheet, Boys II can be dangerous. We def need to have categories:

    Luvvie Dovey music
Thug thizzle my mind is telling me no
Eff you couch let’s do it right here
Music that makes you feel you have A-new-lise on life

All I’m saying is, we need categories, like Shay-d said, different moods call for different tunes. Khia and Celine Dion’s Because You Loved Me cannot be on the same cd, call me type A, that’s how it be for me.

    • Yeah categories are needed but um, Khia?!?! Really?!?! I was with you ’til right then. Unless there’s more than one and I’m getting them confused *hoping*? I would have to disinfect any list she was on. That chick just saddens me…

      • LMAO @ Southern Girl, h-e double hockey sticks NO khia is not on my list. and even IF she were to be, she def would be off after her outrageous Respe me performance on VH1, what WAS that?

I was just making the point that there need to be different categories, clearly i drew too much of an extreme lol.

    • Luvvie Dovey music
Thug thizzle my mind is telling me no
Eff you couch let’s do it right here
Music that makes you feel you have A-new-lise on life

e-twin, your category names are priceless!!! good job lol

  7. first let me start by saying Luffa V is in a class all by himself and you could jus create a list alone of Luffa songs and 8 out of 10 times an adult owes his life to Luffa-shoot I’m pretty sure the reason there will be pitter patter of feet in the White house come Jan 20th is cause of Luffa. Ok well having said that my (i will cut u where u stand with razor blades and watch u bleed to death cause u must be the antichrist) all time love song “Love won’t let me wait” Luffa

    • IH, we could hang. Uncle Luffa is in a league of his own, and when he said “Goodbye”, that time it was for long. I cried. Yes, Luvvie cried.

      • luvvie unless you produce a cornucopia of people, you are not a thug, not a Nore “Superthug” (what what), u r not even kinda a thug, you do not have thug essence, nor thug sprinkles… if nothing else you are a sensitive psuedo-thug that needs hugs. but i still luv you like a play cousin fo sho!

    • you shole right about Luffa..one of my alltime favorites is So Amazing….and one of my favorite get it joints is
Creep by Luffa.. sing it for me four times. creep, creep, creep, Creep…

    • how on earth did i leave Luther out…i’m ashamed. i used to sing my heart out to “love won’t let me wait” and “a house is not a home” in my dad’s game room when i was little. i wore those records (yes, records) out… i just want to know what the heck i knew about love at that age. you would’ve sworn somebody broke my heart in grade school. ha!

      • just want to know what the heck i knew about love at that age. you would’ve sworn my heart somebody broke my heart in grade school. ha!

girl shyt.. you knew that Lutha meant what he was feeling.. I love songs that as my gay friend describes
“make you wanna turn the radio up and just sang loud”

        • Am I the only one who’d sing “All Cried Out” (lisa lisa and cult jam) in the mirror with a sad face?

I was a child when that song came out. But I took it quite seriously. lol.

          • V.E.G – that song “I’m All Cried Out over you…” had some memories…back when I thought I was in love but didn’t know what love was.

            • It’s in my car right now! I love that song. Let’s throw in the begging I wonder if I take you home, or lovey dovey Head to Toe, too.

              • am i the only one who realized much after the fact that Lisa Lisa in fact, couldn’t sing for sh*t?

i was watching lisa lisa vides one day on vh1 Soul and i was like, man she sounds like an ass with nails.

              • “am i the only one who realized much after the fact that Lisa Lisa in fact, couldn’t sing for sh*t?”

I feel like I always knew, I just didn’t want to acknowledge it.

          • VEG seriously.. I started to add that when I was writing that comment but since its not really a love song I left it out…I LOVE all Cried out..the Lisa Lisa and bow legged lou version….

          • I used to sing “Superwoman” by karen White in the mirror with a sad face and a side ponytail. I do not know why I had to have the side ponytail, but I rocked it out in the bathroom. Of course I always ran the risk of one or more of my four brothers and their corny arse friends listening outside the bathroom. I did not care lol.

            • The side ponytail was my hair style in 7th grade. This is before I graduated to the Pebbles haircut.

Maybe I will rock a side pony tail tomorrow…

              • Maybe I will rock a side pony tail tomorrow…

I have been sporting this all week… LMAO thats how you know I think I am cute… I almost cut some bangs..

              • please don’t. lol. unless it’s tastefully gathered at the nape of your neck and hanging over your shoulder in a ladylike fashion. no glitter or gold stars for something hanging of the top of the side of your head like a redux of ‘ol girl in napoleon dynamite. deb?

              • unless it’s tastefully gathered at the nape of your neck and hanging over your shoulder in a ladylike fashion. no glitter or gold stars for something hanging of the top of the side of your head like a redux of ‘ol girl in napoleon dynamite. deb?

LMAO mine is a huge afro puff …..tastefully pulled to the side.. with reddish gold highlights……I know the picture that comes to mind..but that aint what it looks like.. LMAO

              • V, u rock a side ponytail and our friendship is over. You hear me?? Over!!! You aint gon bring down my property value by rocking a side ponytail. I got a reputation to uphold.

            • Lol mine was (and still is) “Come Back To Me” by Janet Jackson. I used to be a tortured soul, looking out of my window, waiting for my lost love to return…wondering if I’d have to live my life all alone.

              I was all of 6.

              • me my sisters and these three dudes that lived 2 houses down use to do full concerts outside
they would do the neutrons.. my heart beats for you or Perfect Gentleman Oh la la/the boyz lucky charm, Dial my heart
and we woud be The good girls and do itching in my heart, or salt n pepa

              • “Lol mine was (and still is) “Come Back To Me” by Janet Jackson. I used to be a tortured soul, looking out of my window, waiting for my lost love to return…wondering if I’d have to live my life all alone.

                I was all of 6.”

                Why are we right ——->here<——-?

Except that I was 9. LMAO

              • “Why are we right ——->here<——-?”

                You act surprised, BBMo.

You know you and Miss t-lee are my e-twins. Maybe we should just crank dat triplet.

              • you know… triplets run in my family. let’s continue the tradish.

my aunt and 2 of my uncles are trips… born right after a set of twins.

can you say my a$$ is in trouble when i finally get knocked up?

              • multiple-multiple births. that’s just crazy. twins and then triplets?? i thought 2 sets of twins was rough.

good luck with pregnancy BBMo lol

              • “can you say my a$$ is in trouble when i finally get knocked up?”

This makes me sad for your uterus.

              • Lol mine was (and still is) “Come Back To Me” by Janet Jackson. I used to be a tortured soul, looking out of my window, waiting for my lost love to return…wondering if I’d have to live my life all alone.

                I was all of 6.

LMAO, who did we think we were?!

          • “Am I the only one who’d sing “All Cried Out” (lisa lisa and cult jam) in the mirror with a sad face?”

No, you’re not. Did you use a hairbrush for a mic?

This song is actually the one and only song I’ve done on karoke (sp?).

No seriously. Somebody spellcheck that for me. Please and thank you. :)

            • You’re spelling is fine, PBG.

“… My tears will burn the pillow… Set this place of fire ’cause I’m tired of your lies…” – Lisa Lisa might have inspire Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes to set Andre’s tub on fire…

              Music is so inspirational.

              • ““… My tears will burn the pillow… ”

It used to worry me that her tears were that acidic and shyt.

      • ” i just want to know what the heck i knew about love at that age. you would’ve sworn somebody broke my heart in grade school. ha!”

Tell me about it! Shai – If I ever fall in love was my JOINT when it came out . . . I had the tape in my walkman, and I was all of 10 years old when that song came out. . . according to wikipedia.

  8. That is a hard question, Pmoney! But if I had to answer that the first song that comes to mind is: “A Song For You” by Donny Hathaway.

If somebody doesn’t like early Stevie Wonder (and let me define that for the masses- PRE- Woman in Red) I might have to cut them.
Also, “You Don’t Know What Love is” by Rachelle Ferrell, “Happier than the Morning Sun” and “Seems so Long” and “Make Sure You’re Sure” all by Stevie… “Be One” by Phyllis Hyman, and Roberta Flack “The First Time Ever I Saw your Face” That’s all i have for now…

    • “The First Time Ever I Saw your Face” – This is when you know your nose is open. “I thought the sun rose in your eyes,” “I felt the earth movein my hand,”for realz Roberta? Yeah, she was gone.

  9. I have a few:

        • who you telling? i used to ice skate backwards to that sh*t with a jheri curl and a twinkle of summer love heartbreak in my eyes. “do you feel my heart beating? do you understand?” …hee, hee

          • who you telling? i used to ice skate backwards to that sh*t with a jheri curl and a twinkle of summer love heartbreak in my eyes. “do you feel my heart beating? do you understand?” …hee, hee

me too..but I had a Hawiian Silky.. not just a regular Jerri joint.. LMAO and looking back at those pictures taught me never to fall prey to “trendy” again

            • to be exact, Miss Patterson had a Quadra Curl, you only had to use activator once a week or twice tops. uh yeah, and i’m convinced my mother did not love me from age 10-13. i had braces too, yeah…i was one awkward puppy.

              • \why in schoolpeople tried to say,”Naw this ain’t no curl, it’s a ‘wave Nouveau’”…? womp

cause a jerri curl was on those little skinny rods but a wave nouveau was achieved using the 4 bar wave joints…it didnt have a curl but a WAVE.. BIG difference… LMAO and then they use to have it faded into a V shap in the back..with three lines on each side..add an open face gold tooth and you was slick the shyt in my highschool….

        • even though i’m 6 feet under at all the jheri curl references…eternal flame was the joint.

      • “2520’s make great love songs too. I love this joint too…I got a lot of them on my first post I think….”

        What about (2520 Love/Breakup Songs) . . . .

        Staind: Everything Changes
        Staind: It’s been a while
Staind: Zoe Jane (love for daughter)
        Radiohead: Creep
        Jet: Look What You’ve done
John Mayer: City Love (reminded me of New York while I was away . . well Manhattan . .not Brooklyn)

College made me all eclectic like and sh!t.

    • “I Want Love” by Elton John is a good one. hey, can we have a karaoke night in d.c. during inauguration week. i say “yes we can”… Pmoney hop to it and find us a spot.

      • LMAO. Do you know I was thinking that as I was thinking of songs? That would be hilarious. Actually, I think this must happen.

          • lmao, can I be in charge of forming the groups? Certain ppl need to be a solo act, such as Yung$$$ and Luvvie. Not sure what they will sing but I’m laughing already.

            • lmao, can I be in charge of forming the groups? Certain ppl need to be a solo act, such as Yung$$$ and Luvvie. Not sure what they will sing but I’m laughing already.

as Long as I get to do my Bobby Brown mix complete with pelvic roll and weak a$$ rap interludes.. LMAO Bobby was the first and best at throwing a wack a$$ rap into the middle of an r&b song and it still being bumpin…
cause when Im on the mike the call me freddie
cause Im ready to really get paid
and anybody steps in the way they get slayed
my name is Bobby, thats what they call me……

              • yeah shay i can def see you as a solo act. fine, you can be bobby brown, only if i can come out of nowhere and do my fav BB wack arse rap:

The truth about Roni, she’s a sweet ol’ girl
About the sweetest little girl in the whole wide world
She’ll make the toughest homeboy fall deep in love
Said once you had a Roni you will never give her up
She’s a special kind of girl that makes her daddy feel proud
You know the kinda girl that stands out in crowds
Found a tenderoni and the Roni is so right
I think I’m gonna love her for the rest of my life…..

i know yall are singing along, don’t front.

              • i wanted to be that girl in the tenderoni video. if i recall correctly it was a concert video. didn’t she do some coy non-rhythm havin’ dance for him or something? i’m too tired to go on youtube right now. but that was back when i had a crush on bobby (gasp!)

              • but that was back when i had a crush on bobby (gasp!)

dont be shame.. bobby had it going on…even with the gumby, the biking short and suspenders he was sportin in the every little step video

            • Overit, I do a MEAN karaoke. And yes, I work best alone. I MAY draft some back up singers to flank me though. Anyone down?

And not you VEG. You gon try to upstage me by dressing in your Diana Ross costume and headdress wit sequins. I just wont have it.

    • Speaking of 2520s…. “More Than Words” – I will sing this aloud in the grocery store (That lite rock station will have the pinktoes looking at you crazy).

        • Trin Trin.. LOL that joint was a fave especially at the end when he sings

          oh oh oh OH…..
          HI FIVE.. speaking of which

stand up in it? (those might not be the exact words) LMAO

      • Hi Five!

        She’s playin
        She…but she likes me
        She liiiiiiikes meeeeee

        I miss the 90s:(

      • man, i remember the first time i heard freakin’ Ebony Eyes. and i HATE smokey robinson, but man do i love that song…

        “…and i bet you didn’t knoooooow thaaaaaaaat, ebony eyes…”

        • Rick with the staccato ad libs. Punctuation after every word singing azz.

But, “I loooooooooooove youuuuuuuuuuuu”, it’s still the business.

        • ““…and i bet you didn’t knoooooow thaaaaaaaat, ebony eyes…”

Singing right along with you Panama. That became my theme song.

        • or great parents who exposed their kids to good music. You can tell alot about a person by their musical taste, lack thereof and their childhood..

im finding some people may have been musically abused as kids LOL. j/k but not really.

          • this is a good point. i know my parents raised me right by just having the good music laying around for me to dig through. though, my parents lose points for blasting both Rod Stewart and Kenny G on long road trips.

i had to dig for the good music myself.

            • i know my parents raised me right by just having the good music laying around for me to dig through.

same here. even before i hit elementary school, my dad let me play around in his music pile. i was exposed to everything from Bach to Barry White. i LOVED opera, especially–i could really perform to some opera (i was extremely dramatic as a child). by the time i was 5 i knew how to work his stereo (he had a tower that played records, tapes, and cds). i loved going up to his study room and rockin out. ahh the good ol days

      • lol…im 22…i just tend to think most of the music being dropped lately sucks like hell, so i been digging up all the old school sh!t and songs i remember from my childhood…

    • Ur choice of “Waiting in Vain” didnt even cross my mind. Maybe the fact that ALL reggae artists do a cover version of this song has killed it for me.

  11. A coupla Mikki Howard joints would make my list, too

Love Under New Management and Baby Be Mine

Bob Marley’s Waiting in Vain, definitely, would be on my “Unrequited Love” list.

  12. I have so many “that’s my songs” but here are my top 5:

    Girl by The Time
Fire & Desire by Rick James & Teena Marie
Love & Happiness by Al Green
    Do Me Baby by Prince
Three Times a Lady by The Commodores
    etc.

      • i remember some years ago that a radio station put Fire & Desire up against If This World Were Mine.

and let me say, i was flabbergasted that everybody thinks Fire&Desire is a better song than If this world were mine which is just ABSOLUTELY ONE OF THE MOST WONDERFUL SONGS EFFIN’ EVER.

i don’t really care for Fire & Desire.

        • “and let me say, i was flabbergasted that everybody thinks Fire&Desire is a better song than If this world were mine which is just ABSOLUTELY ONE OF THE MOST WONDERFUL SONGS EFFIN’ EVER.”

these people you speak of, they have no soul

        • If this world were mine which is just ABSOLUTELY ONE OF THE MOST WONDERFUL SONGS EFFIN’ EVER.

true statement. but i do like Fire & Desire.

        • I forgot if this world were mine.. I love that joint

I would lay at your feet (moving head side to side with beat) all. that. I . own.. youve been so good to me….
AWWW yeah thats the jam right there.. I cant choose between that one and Fire though they are both classics…

        • Panama, “If This World Were Mine” is a great song too don’t get me wrong, but there’s no comparison…both are good in my book. “Fire & Desire” will always be in my top 10 list.

      • My favorite Commodores song

        “Still”

that long pause at the end and then Lionel comes back and says still….***swooning***

        • Still”

that long pause at the end and then Lionel comes back and says still….***swooning***
Dayum IH we are musical twins almost..I love that song and that part for the same reason…his voice kind of breaks on the whispery still…

        • ““Still”that long pause at the end and then Lionel comes back and says still….***swooning***

Intellectual–I can see him singing that song now…Lionel knew he could sang—not sing but sang…lol

      • Speaking of Lionel Richie…

“Just To Be Close To You” – “A man with no di-rec-tion. No pur-pose.” , “No one to love and no one to love me”…. “You made my jagged edges smooth”

        • “Just To Be Close To You” – “A man with no di-rec-tion. No pur-pose.” , “No one to love and no one to love me”…. “You made my jagged edges smooth”

          AWWW Mayne..thats a joint too…

      • ““Three Times a Lady by The Commodores
etc.” Shelia you went back to the crates for this.

Comeback Girl – It’s just something about old school R & B…I listen to it all of the time.

  13. How could I forget about Prince?! Do Me Baby is one of those “gon get, get it, get it, get it” jams

    • lol Overit–Prince knows how to write some slow jams. I also like “International Lover”…but I’m a Prince fan so I could go on all night naming favorite slow jams by him.

      • “Prince knows how to write some slow jams.”

yeah he does, prince knows exactly what he’s doing lol.

    • a few more that came into my head:

      Jesse Powell-You
Vanessa Williams-Save The Best For Last: I cant figure out if I like this song, or I like it cause my best friends loves it..weird.
And I can’t believe I failed to mention Earth, Wind & Fire.

  14. The “this Love ain’t free list”

-Ain’t Nothing Going on But the Rent, Gwen Guthrie
-What Have You Done for Me Lately, Janet Jackson
-Bills, Bills, Bills – Destiny’s Child

    …wait, these aren’t love songs…never mind

  15. a few of my fave 2520 joints not already named…

Aerosmith-dont want to miss a thing
your still the one Shania Twain
baby I love your way-peter frampton
Fly me to the moon-frank sinatra

  16. Top 3 songs of my life (If you can’t get with these, we really might not make it:

Never Felt This Way- Brian McKnight
    Whenever Wherever Whatever-Maxwell
    Sade-No Ordinary Love

These songs are the first that popped into my head because they have had significant impacts on my life. Nothing has yet budged these three.

    Others:

    LOVE AND BLISS
    Daydreaming-Aretha
    So Amazing-Luther
    Des’ree-Kissing You
    I Can’t Say No-Natalie Cole

    TORTURE AND LONGING

    I Can’t Make You Love Me-Bonnie Raitt
    I Never Dreamed You’d Leave In Summer-Stevie
    Ain’t No Way-Aretha

    Falling-Shai
    Lick-Joi (guilty pleasure)
Poppin-Chris Brown (DON”T JUDGE ME!!! I know he’s barely able to legally get it but this damn song just does something to me *shame* But he is cute though…)

    *thinking* have more later

  17. what about
you send me swinging by mint condition
whatever you want, lay your head on my pillow, and it never rains by toni tony tone
and Ask of you -Rafael Saddiq

  18. This is the most impossiblest question I has ever been asked.

Sigh, okay. First off, there’s no way I can pick just one, because like some other folks, I am very type A when it comes to my music, and I have favorite songs for different emotions, lol.

But for love, I shall giveth you 8 jams:

Love Ballad- LTD & Jeffrey O
Giving You All of My Love- Carl Thomas
    Ready or Not- After 7
    Sweet Love- Anita Baker
    Everything- Mary J. Blige
    Somebody Loves You- Patti Labelle
In A Sentimental Mood- Duke Ellington
You’re The One I Love- Jesse Powell

Now if we were talking angry songs, sad songs, party songs, or lusty songs, there would be at least 8 “all time faves” of those too.

  19. Rene & Angela “You Don’t Have To Cry”..alone I’ll be right by your side you’ve found a new home.

Lalah Hathaway “I’m Coming Back” the outdoor version. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rn7SSdVVLr8

Luther Vandross “Never Too Much” ..a thousand kisses from you..

    Fiest “Inside and Out”.

Donny Hathaway (I’ve loved Donny since birth. There’s tons of mainstream stuff he rocks out) but some of his best work is the little known stuff. I really think ” I Know Its You” is the most telling best love song from him of all time.

Frank Mccomb “When You Call My Name”..Sometimes I’m thinking he’s singing about God. I guess thats the best kinda love song there is..where the joint gets spirtual.

Tammy Terrell/Marvin Gaye-”Your All I Need To Get By”

    • Rene & Angela “You Don’t Have To Cry”..alone I’ll be right by your side you’ve found a new home.

I love this joint… and her version of Smile
Angela can flatfoot blow!!! yes I said flat foot.. I am from the south and proud of it dayumit!!!

    • “Rene & Angela “You Don’t Have To Cry”..alone I’ll be right by your side you’ve found a new home. ”

Comeback, that used to be my jam too. The thing is I was a young girl when I first heard a lot of these songs but they stayed with me into adulthood.

  20. A Womans Worth-Maxwell

    CHocolate Legs-Eric Benet

    Back at One-Brian McKnight

    Greatest Sex-R.Kelly

some song by Janet Jackson that will get your juices flowing just listening. I cant remember

    YOur love is ooh
    Every beat of my heart

    one me
    I cant sleep(and the remix)

and his stupid songs but they were still bumpin
    you remind me
Gotham city and the Gotham city remix…

  23. total – ‘kissing you’.
bob marley – ‘turn your lights down low’
marvin gaye – ‘my love is waiting’
letta mbulu & caiphus semenya – ‘ziph’ inkomo’ – a south african classic about old-school love
thandiswa mazwai & tshepo tsola- ‘ndi linde’ – a beautiful long-distance love song.

    and finally…
jah rule ‘what would i be without my baby’ – i’m serious – he’s saying all the right things!! think about it…

    a classic.

    • “and finally…
jah rule ‘what would i be without my baby’ – i’m serious – he’s saying all the right things!! think about it…

      a classic.”

      …cause every thug needs a laay-dayyyy, bay-bayyy!!!
I might have been able to give this a pass, if I didn’t immediately think of Ashanti caterwauling to the sun, moon, and stars on this track.

Now, that “I wanna be yo’ chick” was my ish.

      • that my ish too…”ill always be here when you need me… rule baby, cuz boy you down for me, and you ever have to worry, you know ill make it in a hurry…” i love that song! i just had a crazy flashback to high school…

  24. off topic, nobody came back to say what the first post-election announcement day at work was like with barack obama officially confirmed as the POTUS-elect. Did everyone act as crazy as they threatened to?? ha ha ha ha!!

    please share!

    • I didn’t act out too much. Most of my office was about Barack (although I think there may have been some undercover McCainites cause some folks just went silently along with the convo).

Lots of smiles, random hugs and dance moves though.

  25. maxwell for sure can still get my panties wet, but i tend to move it around a bit. i have a special “quietstorm” playlist on my ipod just for those times and a very strange song has been getting a lot of play to put me in that lovey dovey mood.

“another love song” by justin timberlake.

i really don’t care for the kid, but i ain’t gonna lie, i’ve repeated that damn song more than 4 times in a row!

    other notables that i rotate

    a long walk- jill scott
    emotional rollercoaster- vivian green
    on & on/afro freestyle/ bag lady-erykah badu

  26. Am I the only person who isn’t real big on “slow jams” for the purposes of ahem…”gettin’ it in”?? I feel music…I feel it. It moves me, that’s why I’m always dancing, no matter who is watch or what’s going on when I hear a song I love.

I need a song that is going to set my pace and match my rhythm. Slow jams ain’t really it…ya feel me??

    • Don’t feel ya dawg, BUT I like a nice mix… I defintely can’t “do the do” to jazz though *shrug*, I did learn in college not to “do the late night do” on Saturday to the quiet storm, because when it switches over to the gospel it kinda kills the mood a tidbit, um, a smidgen….

    • Am I the only person who isn’t real big on “slow jams” for the purposes of ahem…”gettin’ it in”??

      yes.

joking. i actually agree with you…i’ve never been able to really get down to music cuz i’ll be busy listening to the music…telling her to shush at the good parts…

  27. It’s a couple songs that automatically go on your Late Night’s CD.

As Jana.love said Maxwell and Vivian Green
    112
    “Meeting in my Bedroom”
Jill Scott will make you want to run around naked, her songs are so nasty I love it

  28. “best love song ever?” I can’t say best song ever because I don’t have enough sticktoit-ness to ride for one song like that, BUT great songs for “Clarence Carter-ing ” :) :

    1. Jill Scott-Crown Royol
    2. Joe- Table for Two
    3. Carl Thomas- about 90% of his first album
    4. Prince- Darling Nikki (makes me want to dance on a pole for some reason)

My only stipulation on music: If he listens to West Coast music and LOVES IT…. he’s cut off.

  29. Off the top of the dome…..

Good Break Up Song – O’Jays “Your Body’s Here With Me (But Your Mind is On the Other Side of Town)

Gladys Night – “Neither One of Us”

Good Love Song – Method and MJB – “Your All I Need”

I’ll probably be back with more.

  30. On the sad love song tip, Luther will make you cry alligator tears. When I was going through my divorce I listend to way to much a “House Is Not A Home” and “Superstar”, not to mention some “Rocket Love” by Stevie. Marvin didn’t help either he has a whole album about the pain of his failed marriage” Here My Dear”.
Straight up depressing stuff their, beautiful but depressing.

    • Lalah Hathaway sang me through my divorce w/her “Outrun The Sky” album. The sad song was “We Were 2″ and the “ok, get it together” songs were “Stronger” and “Outrun The Sky”.

      • My “get it together, it’s over so just move on” soundtrack was a whole bunch of ignorant rap music and then some Smokie Norful and John P. Kee. The rap music restored a little of my confidence and the Gospel gave me hope and evened me out agian.

      • i actually enjoy listening to Hear My Dear, because of all the drama behind it. this ninja made a f*ck you ALBUM to his ex-wife to pay off his alimony. LOL. ingenious. i just laugh when i listen to it like, “oh he MEANT that line right there…”

        • That was one of the most gangsta things ever done in the history of recorded music.

Just another reminder for all you foreigners…that’s how we roll in DC!

        • LOL. ingenious. i just laugh when i listen to it like, “oh he MEANT that line right there…”
I think that everytime i hear “anger’
But here my dear is a hood party favorite..that and womack and womack lets you know there will be drank, herbal refreshment rotel, hotwings, sweet tuna fish and some hardcore dominoes and spades playing..

  31. This list could go on for days so my truncated list of all time best love songs
    As – Stevie Wonder
I want you – Marvin Gaye (But its gott to be the 20 min joint)
I choose you – Willie Hutch
I love you – Aretha Franklin
In love with you – Erykah Badu and one of dem Marley’s can’t remeber which one
Everytime he comes around – Minnie Riperton

Best break up song is a lil eaiser for me…
Ain’t I been Good to You – Isley Brothers

  32. I missed ya’ll yesterday…dayum cold tried to take me out!!!

Silk was a hot group. I loved “If You”. Now that’s a booty jam. :)

    So you asked.
what is the best love song ever? And similarly, is there a song that you’d cut somebody back for? Basically, what’s “your” song?

Best love song for me? I got 2
    Stay In My Corner~The Dells
    It’s Forever~The Ebonys

Yeah the lead singers sound almost the same, but I love the lyrics of both, combined with some of the most heartfelt singing just makse me melt. And, that’s a hard thing to do..lol.

    Couple others I love
Just to Keep You Satisfied~Marvin Gaye
    Natural High~Bloodstone
    Love Ballad~LTD
    You are My Starship~Norman Connors

Yeah I hope he would appreciate the old skool, or we just might not be getting along…lol

  33. my personal faves:

I Want You – Marvin Gaye
    Adore – Prince
I Love You More Than You’ll Ever Know – Donny Hathaway

    classic.

  34. Someone already mentioned it by Adore is hands down one of the greatest love songs of all time.

“… You can crash up my ride… Well, maybe not the ride… But I got to have your face all up in the place”

And P. I will have you know that I bought the CD maxi single of “All The Things Your Man Won’t Do” and went through a phase where I listen to that song ON REPEAT every night for weeks if not a month. When it started to annoy my roommate, I used headphones. So it has to be a great song.

    Other Favs:

“Love” – Trinity 357 remaking that song was an oxymoron because that was an abomination. Part of the greatness of that song was that it would have been interpreted so many different ways.

“Our Love” – It’s a toss up. I’m always down for the original but Mary J. Blige’s version was on point too.

“Love of My Life” – B. McKnight on falsetto for 3+ minutes. Awesome.

“Orange Moon” – So many people slept on this song.

“Silly” – Niecy makes you understand what unrequited love is all about. She combed her hair AND poured the wine and some nigaraguan had the nerve to stand her up. Sadness

“Lovin’ You” – That high note is exactly what love sounds like.

“Millionaire” – A recent addition. But I think giving up a sure thing to take a chance on a maybe speaks volumes on how someone feels about you.

“Guess Who Loves You More” – This man said “In fact, I’m on my way right now.” after straight stealing a chick from somewhere else. Damm.

“Mo Better” – I haven’t heard anyone say anything about this song not neva it is unarguably* the best song on that album.

“Handcuffs” – This was brought to my attention just recently but what better way to say how you feel than to mark your territory by keeping a woman “barefoot and pregnant”. Mine.

“Lovin’ You” – TTT has done it again.

“Love Ballad” – If you don’t know, your mama did not raise you right.

“Distant Lover” – No explanation needed.

I’ll be back with more. I can do this all day.

*If you did argue, it would just be proof of your ignorance.

    • Exclusively Donny Hathaway…

“You Were Meant For Me” – Yes I was.

“For All We Know” – This is some powerful schit right here.

“Giving Up” – *nods head in agreement*

      “Love, Love, Love”

“He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother” – Love is not all about romance.

I think it’s safe to say that “A Song For You” and “More Than You’ll Ever Know” have been well represented among VSB’ers

Side Note: Listening to “Someday We’ll All Be Free” and thinking THIS should be Obama’s Inauguration Theme!

    • Exclusively Luther…

“Superstar” – “Long ago and oh, so far away…”

“A House is Not A Home” – I think Mother Deviant might disown me if I did not acknowledge this song.

“Love Won’t Let Me Wait” – “This here, right now, at this very moment, is all that matters to me. I love you. That’s urgent like a motherphucker.”

“Never Too Much” – “I just don’t wanna stop”

    • “If This World Were Mine” – I left this off of the Donny and Luther exclusives, because both versions are slammin’.

And yes I did use slammin’ as an adjective.

    • “All I’ll Ever Ask” – Najee ft. Freddie Jackson… Blame Midnight Love

“You Are My Lady” and “I Don’t Wanna Lose Your Love” also great ones by Freddie J.

    • I think we should be friends lol. Your list has all my jams on it. And Mo Betta was definitely the best song on the CD.

    • Mo Better really is a beautiful love song. We’re all looking for that person that makes it better.

      *sigh*

  35. I can’t answer this because I have too many favorites. I can’t even come up with the best album, much less best song. My favorite songs are by Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Maxwell. I probably wouldn’t cut someone over one song, but I do know people who don’t like R&B period and they would have to go.

  36. “By the way, in case you missed it, you can go and listen to me on Juice Radio with Miz D and “Real Talk Now” were I was a special guest for today’s Battle of the Sexes show. We had a lot of fun and I got pretty ignant at some point, I’m sure”

yes..yes you did get ignant P-Fiddy..but that was really a fun listen-and I even agreed with you once LOL. And realtalk and Ms. D were great hosts. You all need to do that again.

  37. Wow this is definately hard to narrow down. Ok a couple of my favorites.

    1. At Last-Etta James
    2. I Believe in You and Me-Whitney Houston
    3. Brown Skin-India.Arie
    4. Stars-Kindred Family Soul
    5. Woman-R. Kelly

I am sure i will have more later.

  38. These tracks are the truth:

    1. With you I’m born again– Billy Preston
    2. Here and Now– Luther (skinny) –I admit this joint is a bit cliche now but it’s still a banger
    3. If this World were Mine– Luther (medium)
    4. A House is Not a Home– Luther (Big)
    5. Superstar– Luther (Big as Hell)
    6. You’re my latest, Greatest Inspiration– Teddy P
    7. If only you knew– Patti Labelle
    8. A Song for You–Donny Hathaway
    9. I’m So Proud– Main Ingredient
    10. I go Crazy– Paul Davis (this country bumpkin sang the hell out this joint)
    11. More Than Words– Extreme (y’all don’t know nan bout this joint. this is some 80′s rock fo’ that @ss)
    12. All I Do is Think of You– Troop (“I can’t wait to get to school each daaay!” ‘Nuff said)
    13. Religious Love– R. Kelly — This track will make you have s*x in a church (mosque, kingdom hall, temple, etc)

    • 11. More Than Words– Extreme (y’all don’t know nan bout this joint. this is some 80’s rock fo’ that @ss)

      Trust me, I know Extreme.
      I had the album…lol

You’re killing me with the big, skinny and medium…by the way…lol

    • I already mentioned “More Than Words” up a few posts (well, more that a few).

“What wooould you do, if my heart was torn in two..” Oh yeah. We fux with Extreme.

“My friend” you are late to the party but you still get cool points.

Now, #6, that Teddy P., that’s that schitt.

    • D* I am mad at your skinny, medium, Big, Big as Hell distinctions… **smh**

my least favorite Luffa song is Here and Now,

but you had me at “With you I’m born again”…cuts 7&8 you would get the panties (if I wore some) and 12 well you would have a stalker…

    • LOL great list…. I love Im so proud and If only you knew… dang how did I forget those joints???and co sign religious love I named that somewhere above but its bears a repeat. Also
All I do is th ink of You…..mmmhmmm..Great List

    • I personally like the Jackson 5 version of “All I do is think of you” better. Just seems like it was made for Michael’s voice… Troop’s “Spread My Wings” is the ish too. Rooftop dancing, hammer pants, the works!

  39. I’m a n***a so they are…

Let me see it – UGK

Give me that p***y – Lil Webbie

Don’t Save Her – Project Pat ft. 3-6 Mafia (Especially Crunchy Black’s verse)

Tela ft. Eightball and MJG – “Shonuff”

J/K Those are only good for hoodrats when getting your “I don’t have any self respect and I just wanna get my nut on” lol

I’m sure it’s probably Lenny Williams

That ninja know he was beggin’ on that song.

But it kinda get’s annoying with all the oh oh oh oh.

It sounds like some one poking him with a needle.

    Wood Has Spoken

  40. I don’t know if anyone mentioned it already because it is highly slept on, but my wedding march was Golden by Chrisette Michelle. When I tell you the entire wedding party, my guests, my parents, his parents and even his slightly a-holeish friends were all crying….

As far as the others… let me jump on my ipod real quick and get back to ya…

oh, as i mentioned before, the proposal jam was I’m Ready by Mint Condition… yeah, my life has a soundtrack.

  41. Too many songs. My brain might explode. But here are a few that I can’t live without:

Adore – Prince (obvious, but oh so necessary)

Whatever – Jill Scott (“Do you want some fish and grits? I’ll hurry and go get it”. Now that’s love to me)

All In my Lover’s Eyes – The Isley Brothers (Puts your between the sheets action on a slow burn)

Arms of a Woman – Amos Lee (A track a lot of people are not familiar with. They should be)

Cherish the Day – Sade (“You’re ruling the way that I move, and I breathe your air” … brutal. I love it)

Whenever, Wherever, Whatever – Maxwell (I dated a man who didn’t even listen to music and made that our song. He

Love’s Divine – Seal (I marvel at this song. It’s like the most vague, yet eloquent explanation of love)

Cristo Redentor – Donald Byrd (My absolute favorite jazz joint. It simmers for a bit and then hits you with the horn. Beautiful!)

Quisiera Ser (unplugged) – Alejandro Sanz (I understand just enough spanish to know this song cannot be funked with)

And I once dead ended things with a man who told me he “didn’t get” Otis Redding. That is a complete deal breaker. You must love Otis.

    • Love’s Divine is up there too. At my old job that song would come on and I ‘d have to excuse myself to the bathroom lest the coworkers see the tears, mistake it for weakness, and try to play a playa…

  42. I would have to cut, and to the quick if someone said they weren’t feeling R.Kelly’s “I will Never Leave” or Prince’s “Adore” or Dwele’s “Lay It Down” (I know, but he’s just sexy like that to me–I tell everyone, my lust for young men will get me arrested one day…) *shrugs and puts head down slightly*

  43. Love music topics! But I have too many favorites :(

Love, so many things I got to tell you…

Amel Larrieux – Make Me Whole
    Mo Betta – Raheem Devaughn
I Only Meant to Wet My Feet – The Whispers
    So High – John Legend
Never Felt this Way – Brian McKnight version (corny I know)
The Closer I Get to You – Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway
Just Me and You – Tony, Toni, Tone

I Keep Letting You Back In…

    Ex-Factor – Lauryn Hill
    I’ll Die – Floetry
    Smoking Cigarettes- Tweet
    I’m a Mess – Anthony Hamilton
    Green Eyes – Erykah Badu

    I Wanna Make Love…

Feel Like Making Love – Roberta Flack
    All I – Jill Scott
    Lay Down – Floetry
    Warmth – Janet Jackson
    Naked – R. Kelly
Sad to say ? TP2…it goes hard

I’m sure I have more, just can’t think of them now lol

    • Naked is one of the greatest hits of our time. You gotta love R. Kelly’s sick, p*ssing-on-kids, pedaphile-@ss!

    • Ok, Bailey. Your friendship request is now under serious consideration. It looks promising.

“Smoking Cigarettes” – I think Tweet as an artist is seriously uunderrated. Both of her albums were solid.

“Green Eyes” – What can I say? I have eaten a lot of vegetables in my time.

      • I totally agree with you on Tweet. Both of her CDs were good. I kinda put her in the same category as Teedra Moses, who no one has mentioned but her first CD was great.

And I’ve definitely eaten my fair share of vegetables lol. They’re hard to swallow.

        • “Backstroke” is hands down Teedra’s best song. That’s some serious “I don’t know why I’m still with you. Oh yeah. it’s the dyck” music.

          • “Oh, Papi. I sit and. think about. all of the. things that we. go through. and I wonder why I stay with you but there’s something in your backstroke…”

      • As far as Tweet goes….the Second album sucked. Major disappointment. Smoking Cigarettes was incredible though.

        • I can’t agree homie. I’m Done, Taxi (remake but still good!), Small Change, Where Do We Go From Here. That CD is aight.

      • shay d….were are cosmically linked today.green eyes is my sh!t. love smoking cigarettes and always will from tweet.

  44. I think someone should do a scientific study on the percent of Black kids conceived to:

**Any Luffa V song, or R. Kelly’s “Greatest Sex”. I think at least 35.8%

  45. I think someone should do a scientific study on the percent of Black kids conceived to:

      ***hangs head in shame***

    • I see you D*… I see you.

Jamie Foxx had mad hits on that first album. Now that album had folks in comas. Some of them are still sleeping.

      • Yes!!! Someone jacked me for my Boomerang soundtrack, and that song was the reason I was so mad.

      • That song relaxes the hell outta me. Its just so simply made, and I think that’s what makes it so great.

    • oh my gad.. How the He.ll did I forget Tender love….and I loved November Rain but I am slick a fan of Guns and Roses…Use your Illusions 1 and 2 was that hotness…and Heaven by Brian Adams…Brian got some love songs for you a$$ as well…Good job
Never lie…i had a dude sing this to me in 6th or 7th grade…LMAO

      • “i had a dude sing this to me in 6th or 7th grade…LMAO”

Oh Snap! I sang that ish to a girl in 6th or 7th grade!!! Wait a second…Trina Jenkins? Is that you?

      • At least you got a sweet serenade. I got Freak Me by Silk in the 7th grade… on the school bus. In front of everybody. I wanted to jump out the emergency exit (I was painfully shy until about 11th grade).

  47. I’m dancing to this at my wedding-

    “Always”- Atlantic Starr

    Other faves:

    For the grown-up in me:

“Cherish the Day” and “No Ordinary Love”- Sade

Reverting back to college (very puppy-lovish but if my baby played this panty-dropping would occur):

    “Don’t Leave Me Alone”- Ashanti

    • “Reverting back to college (very puppy-lovish but if my baby played this panty-dropping would occur):

      “Don’t Leave Me Alone”- Ashanti”

Realizing you were in college when Ashanti dropped that record made me feel very, um, mature.

      Enjoy your youth.

      Sigh.

    there are so many…

    • You’re in pgh too? I love Misery by Amel Larrieux. And you’re right about her performing live. I went to one of her concerts and she does the craziest things with her voice. That woman is the truth!

        • If a person who had never been to the U.S. read this blog, they would probably think that Pittsburgh is the place to be.

            • oh. it’s VERY livable. except in the summer time when they shut down all major routes and miles of highway simultaneously—that’s when the Gem loses her pearls and and her mind.

but is it crackin?? only when Gem’s around…

              • Gem…P-Burgh sucks @ss through a straw! Champ knows it, PGH Muse knows it, PBG knows it, you know it and I know it. Let’s all just stop this foolishness already. *scoffs @ Most Livable Places*

              • lmao!! as much as i hate *ducks from pgh muse* the burgh, i can’t say it “sucks a$$ through a straw” becuz it has a lot of good and redeeming qualities.

that being said—i’d never stay here. once i grab that ph-to-the-d, the Gem is OUT on the 1st thing smokin!!!!

              • I don’t know anything about Pittsburgh…never been there. I know I love Philly and everybody I’ve ever met from Philly. Philadelphia grows some of the nicest people.

          • lolololololol…. sheesh… if guffawing loudly at work on a blog that I shouldn’t be on could get me fired… then i would be more done that that burnt black squirrell with the black crackhead teeth ash from somebody’s post the other day… That was a hilarious reply D*… da burgh ain’t that bad…but i’m biased…i’m a native.

      • what you doin in pgh?? you from here?? working?? going to school??

my name is Gem of the Ocean and i am nosy as h3ll.

p.s. ava bar on highland ave 6-8p tonight!!

          • Hey girl, I heard it was about his mistress or sumpthin??? I love this man. Him, simply red, Robin Thicke, the bee Gees, Hall and Oates… the most definitely put on for blue eyed soul

          • Laylah” by Eric Clapton is an incredible song!! Scandalous story behind it too.

and the Unplugged Version is OFF THE CHAIN…
            Drops of Jupiter – Train
I love this joint.. your list rocks!!!!!
            Sarah Smile… good one…

          • “Laylah” by Eric Clapton is an incredible song!! Scandalous story behind it too.

yeah. he was in love with his best friends girl, which is effed up by itself, but even more so when you learn that said best friend was george harrison from the beatles.

the fact that the four minute piano exit was also used as the main theme for “goodfellas” just adds insult to injury

    • P. Gizzle,

this is a pretty great list! That Bitter album is incredible…albeit depressing as f*ck. That Jaguar remake is nuts, too. And who can forget about “Love Ballad” and “I love you more than you ever know”. Good work, kid!

    • oh… I forgot my Keisha, Mary, and Mariah Cuts…

      Love – Keisha Cole
Thought You Had My Back- Keisha Cole
      Heaven Sent – Keisha Cole
Be Without U – Mary (this was prolly THE wedding song of 2007 )
      We Belong 2gether – Mariah
Fly Like A Bird – Mariah
      Vision of Love – Mariah
      My All – Mariah

      • Keisha and Mary are both some hoodlums. But they can make some hits. Well…Mary makes hits but can’t sing. And Keisha can sing her @ss off.

    • Misery – Amel Larrieux (btw this girl is BAD live)

did you see her a couple years back when she performed here for Soul Garden?? she shut it down!! me and my girls were up front, when she did her last song she came up to us and we were singing in the mic lol. we got to meet her backstage. she’s dope.

        • hmmmm i must have seen you then. my memory is terrible so i can’t recollect. maybe i’ll see you tonight. not sure if i’ll be around that late, but we’ll see.

      • I am soooo mad! Her concert here a couple of months ago was canceled. :-( I have all of her albums. She can do no wrong to me. We can be new? beyond? weary? make me whole? *sigh*

are ya’ll up on alice smith? LOVE HER. if not, you most def need to check her out. she’s a bad chick…

    • Oh and thanx P.J for making me think about Silk’s Lose Control… i got my first CD player when this album came out. The best song on this album for me is “Lose Control”… great song… i forgot all about it. I’m going to have to find now…

  52. “I Gave to You” – Last song on Lose Control.. First in my book.

“Go On Without You” – The whole world came to an end and then recreated it self. That’s what’s up.

“I Wanna Get Next to You” – I can’t believe no one including myself mentioned this earlier. Awesomeness.

    • ““I Wanna Get Next to You” – I can’t believe no one including myself mentioned this earlier. Awesomeness.”

I always think of that scene in Car Wash when I hear this song. The pats of butter falling on dude’s head…lol

  53. Simply Beautiful by Al Green. This song is understated, funky and s*xy than a muhfugga. It sounds like he is just freestylin’ over a guitar and a snare drum. This song should be played (on repeat) on a Sunday morning when you and your loved one are in the kitchen wearing matching white drawls and tees, cooking up breakfast. you feel me.

  54. Alright, here is a list of some of my favorite love songs, be they bitter, unrequited, just flowery, etc.

Basically, just that good emotion-music. early.

    1. Barry White – I’ve Got So Much To Give

That’s it for now…I’ve got more…believe you me.

  55. Dont know if anybody already mentioned Ben E. King’s “Stand by Me,” but that’s my number 1. If you don’t like this song you are a cold and heartless bum and need to be dropped quick!

I also think Van Morrisons “Moondance” is super romantic. That song was made for getting close and cuddly in the crisp fall air. Ahhh….Lahv…

    • Dont know if anybody already mentioned Ben E. King’s “Stand by Me,” but that’s my number 1. If you don’t like this song you are a cold and heartless bum and need to be dropped quick!

this song always just makes me think of the movie, and four kids rolling through the woods looking for a dead body aint my idea of romance

  56. SO I feel like I’m mad late, and its not yet Noon in the Chi. But still I pushed forward past the 70 comments and repys to declare my one of My fav’s

Lauryn & D’Angelo- Nothing even matters…. oh or Secret Garden Barry White…

BTW: Any Luffa V, Isley Bro’s, Sade and Maxwell will hit the spot too.

SIDE NOTE: R. Kellz doesnt write or sing love songs… He makes f*ck tracks, do me baby hard songs, give it to me papi…. I think I got carried away. Now I’m having flashes, got to go find me a church fan

  57. “I’d rather be with you” by Bootsy Collins

This isn’t a slow jam but this psychadelic funky @ss negroe sang this joint from the heart.

Song Quotable: “i’m gonna stick my love in your eye so you can see me coming, baby.” ….not cool

  58. how could i forget….

    “Break You Off”- The Roots

Best song ever. Seriously made for doing the do…

Everytime Eye Close My Eyes – Babyface

Never Should’ve Let You Go – Hi Five
    Obstacles – Eric Roberson
Night and Day – Al B. Sure
    Sting – It’s Probably Me

  60. I am yet another lurker that finally HAD to say something!

Floetry- Getting Late and Say Yes

Those ladies knew how to get a man bucky naked with the quickness. Seductresses they were…

  61. I hate this question. There is no single greatest love song, because there is no single greatest love. It’s all a matter of opinion and personal preference.

I like Donny Hathaway’s “A Song for You” just the picture he paints in those words is enough to make you wish you loved someone that hard. Or that someone would love you that way.

  62. I have been making a list of songs I need to add to my fake I-Pod.

Thanks VSBers for giving me a reason to further procrastinate this weekend.

    • lol @ fake ipod.

i’m making a list too. becuz a lot of these songs went up in flames with my old pc in the crash of ’06. some jams never made it to the new comp and my memory is just p*ss poor. thanks guys!!

  63. Here are two that come to mind:

    Get Here- Olete Adams

I can play that song over and over and over again. LOVE it.

Nothing can come between us- Sade

  64. gotta go with three:

    “crusin” by smokey robinson
“heaven can wait” by paleface jackson
and, for unrequited love, my surprise choice is,
“passin me by” by the pharcyde

  65. Common, “The Light” – Love the video, love the message.

*pauses to bookmark this. page. right. cheer. so I have a go-to list when I get my new laptop*

  66. Also gotta throw in “My Cherie Amore” while I’m at. Specifically for those of us who have kids. When I hear that song I think of my ex-wife’s daughter; her name was Amor, so that one always touches a nerve with me.

  67. Anyone who had The Box in the late 80′s might remember
Anquette, I’ll Always Be There For You.

Oh and Jill Scott, He Loves Me – those high notes hit me right in the heart.

  68. VSB – you need to proclaim Friday’s old school fridays…lol

Next Friday, I’m doing an old school slow jam mix on my blog. This week is all about President Obama :)

  69. You know who didn’t get any love today (arguably ever)…

My dude Darien Brockington. That joint “I miss You” is really crazy, dunny.

    • “Everybody needs something to believe in, everybody wants somebody to love…”

The best “not quite 2 minutes” on that album.

“Think It Over” is also a good one.

    • You know what.

      I love you.

“Come On Over”, “I Got What You Want”, the “Lover & Friend” interlude…sigh.

There’s something about “I Miss You” that is really sexy, even though its supposed to be a sad song. Just like “Please Don’t Go”, and “Lonely Heart” from Boyz II Men.

LMAO girl YES>….those joints was made for some break up to make up

  72. I am so surprised I haven’t seen the ultimate love song listed here, yet:
I Will Always Love You, by Whitney. That song still brings me to tears.

Just a little tid-bit: The version that we’re all so familiar with was the first time Whitney had sang it in the studio. It was so powerful and so real that they decided to keep it based on that first run-through. So at the end, when it sounds like she’s crying…well…she really is. Ahhh I’m overcome by emotion!

  73. This post reminds me of the last time I visited a club, when a lushie friend of mine insisted that the DJ play something with a “dirty guitar”. She persisted and protested, until finally he had her thrown out. After she left (yes, I stayed), he played 4 songs that fit the description, including the intro to D’Angelo’s “Lady” and that interlude from John Legend’s first (?) album.

  74. Here is my list of recent S*X tracks. Use this information with caution (I will not be held accountable for broken backs, hyperventilation, hernias, or other s*x related injuries):

    2. Bed– J. Holiday
    3. Say When–Tommy Redding (off Ginuwine’s latest release)

    11. Beautiful- Me’Shell Ndegeocello
    12. We Should Be– Trey Songz

NOTE: If these tracks can’t get you the drawls…you should just apply fire (or hot coals) to your nether-regions because you’re beyond help. HAA!

    • Good List. Here are a few that I’ve been listening to whilst in my celibate solitude:

      • Are you testing yourself with these selections?

How long have you been sans goodies? Did you consult with your doctor before going on said diet? It’s not for everyone.

  75. First of all, 815 comments. DEFINITELY a VSB record. Thats NUTS

Al Green’s – “Simply Beautiful” will be playing on my wedding night. PERIOD

  77. First off, I wanted to say that I’ve been lurking for a sec now but finally felt inclined to add my $0.02 I’m a paramedic by trade and this blog has kept me from curb stomping some of my patients at 3 am when they call me for a stubbed toe.

Secondly, I thought I was the only person who really felt “Alright” by Jamiroquai.

Lastly, I wanted to add two more gems: Geno Young’s ‘Honeydew’ and Raheem DeVaughn’s ‘You.’

    Take care.

  78. Uhh yeah, I’m not reading all these comments. And since I’m so late, folks probably won’t read this.

Anyway, to me, the greatest love song ever is “I Used To Love H.E.R.” by Common Sense. I know it’s not the typical “love” that one would immediately think of, but his expression of love for hip hop mirrors mine. Coincidentally, this is my favorite hip hop song of all time.

  79. Someone To Believe In – Randy Crawford (love this song)

Purple Rain & Do Me Baby – Prince

    Bitter Earth – Dinah Washington

Make Me Whole – Amel Larrieux

Baby Hold On To me & How Many Times – Gerald Levert (almost anything Gerald, but off top that’s all I could think of.)

Speechless & Cater To You – Beyonce/Destiny’s Child (had to say it… didn’t want to, but had to!)

Lay Your Head On My Pillow – Tony! Toni! Tone!

Just wanted to add some songs that may not be mentioned already.

If I Ever Fall In Love – Shai

    Feenin’ – Jodeci

(since I’m so late just thought I’d on some more

Jill Scott- I think it’s better interlude (It should have been a whole song)

    Musiq- love

    702- I still love you

    Tyra B. Still in love
    Seether ft. Amy Lee- Broken

  84. Nothing even matters by Lauryn Hill featuring D’Angelo, is far the best love song ever. The lyrics are spellbounding and the part that gets me every time is when D says ” I dont need no alcohol, your love makes me feel ten feet tall.” Without it I’d go through withdrawl cause nothing even matters at all…..wow pure genius, need I say more

  85. Thanks Janee- I scrolled all the way down with my mouth hanging open that no one mentioned a Prince song…
