The Chinaman has it right. In the land of China, the people hardly got nothing at all you can rent white people. I can’t lie, when I first read this article, extreme jealousy arose in me. Why hadn’t I thought of this great idea? This might be one of the most singular brilliant ideas in the canon of great ideas ever. Can you imagine how much more successful things would be if you could add a white person to the mix? No? Well the Chinaman has imagined it and made it real.
You go, China. You go.
Shoot, I’ve been trying to throw a white person (male or female) into the VSB mix for months now because I’m convinced that it would take us to the next level. Nevermind what the B in VSB stands for. Peep game, homey.
For a day, a weekend, a week, up to even a month or two, Chinese companies are willing to pay high prices for fair-faced foreigners to join them as fake employees or business partners.
Some call it “White Guy Window Dressing.” To others, it’s known as the “White Guy in a Tie” events, “The Token White Guy Gig,” or, simply, a “Face Job.”
And it is, essentially, all about the age-old Chinese concept of face. To have a few foreigners hanging around means a company has prestige, money and the increasingly crucial connections — real or not — to businesses abroad.
As much as I want to say how ridiculous this is, it really is a good idea. Face it, renting a Black person (as has been done by the good folks at Rent-A-Negro) really only goes so far. In most places in the world, having ninjas around doesn’t really make anybody WANT to do business with you. Hell, most of us scurry from our own Black business faster than Mike Vick from the scene of a crime in Virginia. But you add white people to the mix, things don’t seem as bleak.
This got me to thinking about some other areas where having white people present might be a plus – and why renting a white person would be a great idea for coporate America. Don’t white people put you at ease? They sure put me at ease!
1. Apartment complexes in “sketchy” areas
Have you ever gone to look at an apartment but wondered if you might get shanked if you came home too late? Me too. But what if at the very moment you were questioning the existence of Buddha, two white hipsters walked out of the building. laughing and yucking it up and got into a Prius and drove off. Wouldn’t that make you think it must not be THAT bad if white people were there? Imagine it being two girls. Two random white chicks aren’t living in the hood.
I’ll take it!
2. Bank
Don’t you trust your bank not to fail if white people put their money there? I know I do! If I was some random bank I’d pay some white people to ALWAYS be conducting transactions. Everyday from 9-5pm. I’d also put them on my brochure even if my entire clientele consisted of vatos and ninjas from South Central. Quanquisha, I’d like to make a deposit!
3. NAACP Board Meeting
We’re mostly all Black here. Every time I go to a church meeting (which has been years) it’s been marred by a bunch of Uncle Ruckus like behavior between bunches of ninjas not being willing to get stuff done. I imagine the NAACP having that problem times 10. I mean their order of business one year was to hold an ACTUAL funeral for the n-word. I’m not saying they don’t get sh*t done, I’m just saying they don’t get sh*t done. But if you add some white folks to the meetings, I’ll bet the list of items for business all get addressed. One thing we don’t like to do in the crommunrity is look bad in front of the pink folks. Rent a few and keep them coming to meetings and we just might get Lil Wayne freed from jail. Bumaye Wayne.
4. Local restaurant in the hood
Once white people start going there, on purpose, all the ninjas will follow because we LOVE to be late to the party. Even if its in our backyard.Yay. Rent a few white people to sit around and eat grits and collard greens all day and you’ve got yourself a burgeoning “New Hot Places To Go” writeup in BigTownPaper, USA.
Those are just a few of the places I feel like having a white person would be advantageous. Hell, I’m gonna see if I can rent me a white guy today…just so people think I’m smart. Or is that an Asian? Who cares! Let’s rent ethnics!

I was at a dinner for an Asian and Pacific American organization at a table full of Black folks on Sunday. As the host was introducing the sponsors for the nights event and asking them to stand, my friend turned to me and said no matter where you go 2520s are gonna be in the building. Sure enough one of the sponsor tables was 2520 Central. Wait, this is in China and I was at an Asian/Pacific American event? Let me find out those dudes were rentals!
@Atypical Librarian – I went to an event that was a demonstration on Japanese culture and conducted mostly in Japanese. The audience was mostly Asian. You should have seen the looks on their faces when the stage lights came on and it was all White folks on stage.
Maybe White people are the real ninjas…always in stealth mode just popping up out the blue!

and WHAT?! they’re building new homes off Perry blvd? WHY?!?!?!? Atlanta is one of those cities where the projects were LITERALLY placed in the most out there locales possible. While Bankhead is popular now in urban folk lore, hell, unless you a Bankhead resident nobody would ever end up in Bankhead Courts or even Bowen Homes. Carver Homes was like the ONLY thing back there off Pryor Road for the longest. I know Techwood and Herndon Homes were close to downtown but hell, whited used ta didnt even go near northside. lol.
it’s so funny how they’re buidling up certain locales like that whole development where carver homes used to be. it still looks like a place you dont go if you dont live there…but at least you can die in a newly renovated duplex.

You need to visit the A. They’ve done away with almost all the projects. They tore Bankhead courts down in like 2 days. Nothings there in it’s place yet. The built new fancy intown apartments where Capitol homes were. They are shipping us out or away from the city.
The westside is coming up but not the Hollywood rd, perry area. FYI:Those new apts, condos and homes or off perry between those run downs schools and the Marta bus yard. why anyone would want to live there is beyond me. I feel about them the way you feel about the carver homes area.
They also built sone NICE Swedish looking contemporary townhomes off Marietta blvd. They are building up everything on Marietta st (near Tech), Howell mill and northside drive. That part of westside I could mess with. But anything on Bankhead, perry, Bolton, marietta and Hollywood are out for me.
I actually think Bolton may be on the come-up, too…Coulda sworn one of my 2520 coworkers bought a $300K house in that “transitional” area…

Still doesn’t ring true to me. 1) because the places I mentioned above albeit new and shiny aren’t places I would look to dwell and besides a few bold white folk I thought most of those spots were empty (I could be wrong) and 2) outside of the borders of nortside dr and Howell mill from Marietta (on the south) and I-75 on the north I’m still calling sketchy. Although I’m sure it will just take the economy to bounce back and a couple years for it to be a takeover.

I’m not saying that –for some people– there’s no appeal in cozying up with folks of a paler persuasion. There are some things that some black folks do that annoy me to no end, but I don’t see how cozying up with the others fixes it.
I totally understand the sentiments about the NAACP, and that’s why I volunteer with organizations that get s*** done (big ups to Uhuru).
The bank: when I was in SoCal, had there been a branch of OneUnited in Long Beach, I’d have been there with bells on. I totally appreciate the possible volatility of banking there, but knowing that those dollars were being funneled back to the community would have made it all worth it (although, after seeing MJ in those Jackson Hewitt and Aaron’s commercials, I’m glad I didn’t).
The neighborhood: sketchy is relative. Unless the block is hot, I can hang. If that’s where we are, that’s where I want to be. I’m not tryin’ to go all talented tenth on folks, but I’m pretty good people, and how can some of what I got rub off on some folks who might need it if I’m stuck in an ivory tower.
Restaurants: Fifth Street D*** (get your minds out the gutter), Shashamane, M&M’s (Long Beach), Vegan Soul, Papa West: great food, great service, black-owned (Well, one of these spots doesn’t have great food, but the service is outstanding.) I don’t know how I manage to find black-owned businesses that appreciate the value of patronage, but so many folks here don’t.
There’s some pretty unsavory mess to deal with in some black circles, but feeding into the “white is right” mentality degrades us. I KNOW there are some entrepreneurs here. How much more successful (regardless of current standing) do you think you’d be if folks (including our own) didn’t automatically discount your abilities because of the racial group with which you identify?
Kenisha, I totally agree with you. However, I think there is a general perception that although we don’t give credence to, many people do. Therefore, I totally see how the ‘rent a whitey’ idea could be beneficial.
When I read this, that scene in “The Five Heartbeats” wherein Dresser tries to convince Eddie that havin’ a bunch of white folks on their album cover is acceptable came to mind.

I’ve been the Rent-the-darker-complexioned-pan-african-latina for years because I fill three quotas: Latino (I still don’t know what that is…), African American and Female. I can’t say it bothers me, because it got me a full graduate fellowship.
I’d like to “rent a white person” the next time I go running in the park. Whenever my girls and I go running old ladies pick up their walkers as if we’re the characters from “Set it Off” (I see you Cleo). When did Black women become threatening?
In real life I play “rent a white person” by inviting my grandmother (who can pass) to go into Saks with me. They always think I’m “the help”… which is ok because then they aren’t following me around, and she pays.

“NAACP Board Meeting”. aka Toronto’s Caribana.
For those who dont know, it’s the west indian + guyana festival. it’s 2 weeks long, with the hypest part of it being the last weekend with the parade, the parties, the sexy and not to sexy ammurican mens with they accents. it’s huge. one of the biggest in the continent. and yet.. for years, it was always losing money. one of the biggest sources of shame in the black community. the thing brings in MILLIONS to the city..and we run the festival at a deficit??? for shame.
I’m big on events (it’s what I do for a living), so one year i decided to volunteer. i went to a meeting and came out disgusted. the adults spent the entire time talking to each other, not paying attention to what the speaker/committee was saying and just being so damn ignant. even worse was that 99.7% of my black friends TOLD me NOT to go. it’s like they knew. if it’s run by black people…expect it to start late and not be very productive. i’m always trying to prove that theory wrong (esp being a black event planner)..but sadly it usually holds to be true. (unless it’s yours truly planning that ish!) yes..im tootin my own horn. trumpet.
anyways the city stepped in and created a committee of ‘community members’ to run it. at one point in time it, because of all the in-fighting and veterans not wanting to get with the program..caribana was renamed carribbean carnival or some other damn foolishness. that didnt last long.
finally scotiabank (1 of our 5 major banks, with a HEAVY presence in the WI) stepped in 2 yrs ago to be the presenting sponsor. they re-branded it Scotiabank Caribana (which means it’s trademarked.. As someone who spent 7 yrs fundraising for diff charities, I pay close attention/am a nerd to these kinds of things. Commercialism usually gets people’s VS cheeksters up in a twist – but i welcome it. If it makes the festival more sustaining, brings in more people, makes it more reputable: im all for it. they didn’t just ‘buy’ the festival, they use their sponsorship dollars wisely. A caribana weekend transit pass. Free water at the parade (what is the ONE commodity that people will want the most at a hot outdoor event!?!?! this is smart marketing/branding!).
moral of the story: until the young folk (like me/my generation) get a chance to get in there and use our passion for the culture/event + the education our parents made us get – it’s not ever going to be trusted in the hands of only black folk again.

I went to a small HBCU, Winston-Salem State University, in NC, and there was a White girl on the drumline. There was a biracial guy who looked more White than Black who played trumpet. After I graduated, there was a White girl on the cheerleading squad. Very rarely do I see White faces on marketing materials, but what I do see is people who graduated with me in 2003! It can’t be that difficult to photograph current students!
While I was at WSSU, they did award minority presence scholarships and I wasn’t mad at the people who got them because I had my own scholarship based on academic merit. Now that I’m pursuing my master’s at a majority institution on a minority scholarship I could care less what people think. I know that even though minorities only were eligible to apply, it was also competitive in terms of academic merit.

I went to a small HBCU in GA and we to had a handful if white ppl, which any vadcwhen you only have maybe 3000 students. We had a white dude pledge Sigma and a mixed girl (who is quite bright) pledge delta. I can’t think of any black band members or cheerleaders though. Anyway my point is it’s not that far fetched.

I was thinking the exact same thing (kinda like the racial draft episode)…but if there was going to be any benefit to renting and/or having 2520s present, I would think that it would be in PREVENTING establishments like liquor stores, check-cashing places, & pawn shops from setting up shop in the hood in the first place.
#1 – One thing that I didn’t know when I rented my 1st apartment – visit the area at NIGHT. I messed up and visited a few hours before a Mariners game. All those White people in the neighborhood were the cheapskates who park in the neighborhood and take the bus the rest of the way to the game. My first night, it was all Ranchero music everything in the complex across the street. I also learned that Seattle had Border Patrol (who knew?) and they raided my bldg and the one across the street regularly. I lived there 6 months.

Before I even got to your Number 1, I already remembered seeing hipsters on Sherman Avenue near Howard University (back when I was there) and wondering if the property was gonna increase because white folks were moving in. Usually white folks around the neighborhood may be a good thing, but you gotta have close inspection on the white folks. Do they have their teeth? Are they meth heads? Are they jerking and tweaking and walking barefoot on a*s sidewalk? Is there a swastika or confederate flag on their person or do they have mullets? Not disrespect at all, but history proves people of color gotta be careful. Also proves that whoever these folks are renting gotta look the part, mayne. You can’t be renting out Cletus and ‘ish (Brandine!). Now Cletus might be good, decent folk, and cool to kick it with, but he ain’t gonna provide the service some of these renters are looking for in their ‘white person’.
Plus, I’d love to rent a white person to help me get a loan, to come with me when viewing housing. #1 and #2 rings true.
For Number 3: Them folks who ain’t gonna do ‘ish still aint gonna do ‘ish. They may, however, not want any scrutiny and fall back from being in charge of doing ‘ish or simply fall back because there is a new kwiteria (Bishop Don Magic Juan) and expectation to do ‘ish. If the raggedy folk outnumber the deligent, they might punk the white person. Then again the white person may not be about ‘ish or do ‘ish either. Just cause they white don’t mean they ’bout it.
For Number 4: Just white folks being there doesn’t mean it’s good. Plenty of the “hottest ticket” places in town have awful food and service, but just got that reputation to see and be seen. I ain’t

I know there is this one place that’s not too far from me that was always crowded with 2520′s, so I decided to see what it was all about. I went there for breakfast non the less, and the food was just so so. I know I sent food back (and I’m not a picky eater). I mean how do you mess up breakfast?

For so many to use them as some sort of barometer for all thiings successful in order to reach the promise land is so baffling, because I’m almost certain a lot of them just sit back and chuckle at the madness and extremes that a lot of people out here will go to, in order to measure up according to their standards. Basically shows that no matter how far folks excel in their personal lives and careers, or hell, as a people… it will not stop them from constantly taking a look-see over the fence to see and take notes on what the whitebread is doing or what their next move will possibly be… eager to stay on board with their “white is right” mentality, which sadly continues (in a demented and twisted way) to make them pretty much “the envy of the world.” while they can give two ishts (the other way around). Sick. Yet brilliant.

~ Most medical/healthcare facilities (i.e. hospitals, doctor’s offices, etc….well, this is excluding the dentist IMO).
~ Potential employer. I am sorry but its somewhat of an immediate red flag when there are too many of us (because in past experiences, my instincts were usually right on the money, but it was moreso based on how well they presented and/or carried themselves or NOT)….but pretty much any race of people that significantly outnumbered the rest, I tend to frown on for that matter. I prefer a much more diverse work environment, where you really can’t pinpoint which race of people are the majority…its simply well blended.
~Certain public and/or magnet schools (private goes without saying)
~neighborhood laundromat
~consignment shops and boutiques ( also known as “hidden gems”)
~garage, yard and/or estate sales (“….Oooo gurl, there’s a yard sale over in Hyde Park…you know y’eet folks be havin’ some nice isht” [mentality] ).
…..and that’s all I’ve got for now.

I even saw one dude come out of the stall, walk out the restroom and end up in the kitchen fridge, digging into the ice compartment with his bare hands. I would like to have this service for when I am attempting to get a Yellow Cab, especially in Manhattan and under suspicion of attempting to go to Brooklyn (which is usually the case). I have actually asked White folks on occasion to act like they are hailing a cab and then turning it over to me. They always oblige and the swindle always works. When I lived in Bed Stuy (Marcy Ave. and Monroe), I watched 2520s open up a restaurant on Nostrand Ave., throw a few tables and chairs on the sidewalk in front and had a few hippie 2520s sitting there drinking tea. (WTF?) It was the most out of place thing I had ever seen.

Car buying….when I went to buy my car I was contemplating taking a white male friend with me…studies have been shown that they get the best deals—black women like myself get the shortest end of the stick. He was unfortunately unavailable, so I had to settle for my dad, who as a black man gets a marginally better deal. (I think it went WM–>BM–>WW–>BW, though BM and WW may be reversed)

I will say this…yes I was an Ashley Banks. I lived in 2520ville void of all ethnicity. I longed for anyone of color. Shoot, that ONE other black boy in my school, regardless of what he looked like, was gonna be my date to the dance and chill buddy OR ELSE that ninja was gonna get the side eye and beat box everytime I saw him. Say what you want, I was thirsty. My Ashley Banks behind used to drive (with other ashley banks in my area) down to the ghetto just to feel like we were down and get some Black culture, etc. Yeah it was great, gravy, chicken and biscuits until I got robbed at gunpoint and nearly raped. Found out one of my rent-a-ghetto black friends set the whole thing up. Cause you know, it’s cute to have a drug dealer boyfriend when you’re Ashley Banks.
*sigh*…okay my point: I realized that ish would never have happened if I stayed my behind where I lived. Most all of my young drama happened because I was where I wasn’t supposed to be. Now don’t get it twisted, a white man will kill you, (because he likes the smell of your hair and you said hi to him) cut you up, and store you in his freezer for 6 months so don’t feel too safe around these parts. I had a white man flash me when I was 7 and I think that’s when I went black and never looked back…but that’s a whole nother blog.

And let me clarify for my bro Sobo and anyone else who wants to comment that I thought (as a teen mind you) that Blacks only lived in the ghetto yada yada yada…I DIDN’T and DON’T. I was a teenager feeling insecure about being of wealthy parents and was trying to be “down” and be around my people. Teenager teenager teenager…as in young, dumb, and full of prostyle.
There is nothing wrong with that all, and you shouldn’t feel insecure about it. I grew up in the hood in a single parent home, but damned it to hell if my mom didn’t make sure that when I stepped foot out of her house, I knew that I was representing her and the way she raised me. I grew up in one of the worst parts of Dallas, where seeing a 2520 man made me wonder if there was a stakeout going on because the cops never made much of an effort to come to my side of town. It’s all about how you treat people no matter where you come from. The way you grew up didn’t make less black or down than me or anyone else. As long as you remember that you are black and where you come from and who raised you, there should be no conflict. My older sister always said that we were a family full of snobs as a joke when we were kids, but in a way we were because our mom raised us not to put with ignorance. If it made us uppity in the eyes of others, so what. We weren’t rich but we knew that getting an education would allow us to get out of our old neighborhood and do better, but at the same time, you got to give back.

In the 80′s/90′s, SOUTH florida was very segregated…blacks lived in black town and whites lived in white town. My family was literally the only black family in our neighborhood. Very few blacks lived amongst whites. Of course it is different now. I Never said black=ghetto. Reread my thread. I said a black friend I had was ghetto…and he was..and I’M insulted at your hint that I’m racist. My family is from the ghetto but they aren’t ghetto. The restaurant one is too true! Oakland has been blowing up with soul food restaurants even in sketchy areas and once white people find out about it, their status is immediately elevated. There is one in Temescal called Bakesale Betty and white folks be standing in line around the corner for their fried chicken sandwiches every day! (It’s owned by a white Australian transplant..)

However, I can see you point as you go down further near the Check Cashing spot on 40th and Telegraph near MacArthur BART. Now if Bakesale Betty’s is in the Deep East or on High Street or E. 14th, then maybe…. I didn’t know the owner was from Australia.
On another note, I just found out last week they opened another Bakesale Betty’s on Broadway and Grand. They making beaucoup money to only be open Monday-Saturday 11am-2pm.
Anyplace where I am being paid or my money is being managed – Not because I think 2520s are “better”, but I believe they have a different business/work ethic and (to be honest) care about things that many businesses that are 100% ninja don’t see as important.
Neighborhood/Apartment – I’m currently looking to relocate from College Park, MD into DC. The rent is RiDONKulous!!!! (Well, probably because I’m looking in the U Street/Adam’s Morgan/Columbia Heights areas). But I digress. One of the sketchiest places I’ve ever lived was in the Bronx (216th and Barnes) . For the most part, I didn’t have any problems, but when someone was shot and killed in front of my house, I started packing. So my preference is mixed communities (I do tend to freak out when I don’t see ANY people who look like me…….*flashback of my stint in San Diego* ugh!) But, my feeling is that If 2520s aren’t scared to live there, then I don’t have to be.
CNOTE…I didn’t know you were in my neck of the woods! I wouldn’t recommend Columbia Heights to anybody. The only reason I go to Columbia Heights is for Busboy and Poets. You may get shanked between the Target and Columbia Rd. If you do U street, you may need to get another full time and part time job just to make half of the rent (and the traffic on a Friday and Sat…)

Honestly, I can’t wait for the day that I can. But, from my experiences (and I’ve had many), most of them need to step it up (customer service and product availability). I’m just saying.

This is where I have the issue (well, sort of). I feel like dedicated business owners will do their due diligence on the front end (researching successful business practices to model and somewhat mirror that), then on the back end they should reach out to the consumers (via face to face, survey, mailers…or whatever) to ask what could be improved upon. I hold black businesses to the same standard as I would do any other business.
And you’re right, you should hold black businesses as accountable as any other business… But in the spirit of this site (or Black eWorld in general), we are trying to “lift our people”… with that agenda in mind, I think we should at least let them know why we are patronizing their establishments or why we are not… Then again, if there is no outlet for you to do so, it might be tricky…
As a future business owner, and the granddaughter of a tremendous business maven, it is a sad day when people decide NOT to patronize your services based on the color of the skin of another business owner they have interacted with… When I receive bad service at Kroger, I may go to HEB or Randall’s heck I may even go to a different Kroger but I don’t decide right away that because the store is operated by a corporation in Seattle, I am no longer patronizing Seattle corporations… It sounds ridiculous because it kinda is… All I am trying to say is, a business should be a business should be a business… Discriminating against ALL black businesses because SOME (even if you tried 100, it’s still not all of them) did not do well is a bit unfair IMHO.
