By now, everybody should have heard the hubbub about the women of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority winning first place at the 2010 Sprite Step Off. Oh, and if you’re Black and have never heard of them, it’s because they are a white sorority. Peep game.
Yes, you read that right. A white sorority won a national step competition that prominently featured Divine 9 organizations. Our rhythmically-challenged, recessive gened sistren from the University of Arkansas, walked into our house, wiped their feet on the rug (they are Southern afterall), stayed, ate, then walked out with a win that I’m sure surprised everybody. Now, I’ve seen their routine. They did a good job. I have not seen the other routines so I’m not in a position to speak on their winning (and apparently due to a “discrepancy” Sprite has upgraded the 2nd place Tau Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha into a 1st place tie with the ZTA chapter – sounds like pandering to a gang of angry ninjas), but I will say that I’ll bet your last month’s rent that the “white girls doing Alpha steps efficiently” factor weighed heavily on their win. It’s like seeing the mentally challenged 6’15″ kid dunk on somebody. It looks WAY worse than it actually is making it look way better than it will ever be on a historical scale.
But like I said, they did a good job and I didn’t see everybody else. However, this did make me think about the fact that, “hey, white chicks won a step competition against a GANG of Black folks whose sole purpose was to win a step competition. Here they go again. First it was jazz, then it was rock ‘n roll. They jacking us AGAIN when we least expect it.” If we’re not careful, there’s more to lose.
Such as?
Glad you asked.
1. Spades
Spades is debatably the national Black card game. But more and more white dudes that hang with Black dudes are playing. Don’t be surprised if one day, White Jon takes his knowledge to Iowa and a spades tournament gets going with one Black team from Des Moines losing in the first round and then spades hitting ESPN 8: The Ocho with no Black people and being moderated by Bill O’Reilly. Look what happened with Uno. You don’t remember do you? Exactly.
2. HBCU’s turning into OINHBCU (Only in Name HBCU)
Morehouse had its first white valedictorian a few years back. It only takes a few and next thing you know beer pong and body shots replace good old fashioned weed and 40 night. I’d be more worried if Spelman had a white valedictorian. Black dudes probably weren’t paying attention. Ain’t no sister gonna get upstaged by a white chick on her her home tuf.
Oh wait. the Sprite Step Off.
Sigh.
Nevermind.
3. The Hood
Hm. Wait, they got that too, only they changed it from the hood to the neighborhood and brought in Starbucks and started walking dogs at 3am and raised property values so high that folks can’t afford to live there even if they ho themselves out 9 days a week and on Sundays.
Ah! I got one.
4. R&B and Neo-soul
Though for some reason Justin Timberlake, Robin Thicke, Joss Stone, Amy Winehouse, and Duff seemed to have gotten insane hood passes. Oh yeah, and they sell more. And Robin Thicke married Paula Patton. I think I’m sort of losing this one too.
Hm.
5. Tyler Perry movies
We need not be careful here, I was just running out of options, though I know quite a few white people who watch Tyler Perry movies. Possibly because a train wreck is a train wreck and we all can’t help but watch. At least he’s getting money though.
What’s my point again?
6. Hip-hop
At least Eminem is currently the only really viable white cat with enough hood credibility to truly be a threat, but he’s from the D so, I mean, who can be mad at that. However, producers are becoming by and large less Black and more other. And the best producer of the New York sound is from Texas. My point is that anything can happen. Hell we took over golf and a Chinaman is the tallest NBA player.
7. Swagger
I see more and more white people rocking that Black man swagger that so many of us fall back on when we forget to graduate from Everest College.
But at least…
8. The myth
Isn’t going anywhere.
I’ll stop there since really, there’s nothing that white people aren’t moving in on. Lest we forget, The Color Purple is a Spielberg directed movie. Help. Us.
Good people of VSB, I’ve failed. Can you think of anything we haven’t lost that’s in jeopardy if we don’t pay attention?!
Help.Me.
I.T.T.

“Don’t be surprised if one day, White Jon takes his knowledge to Iowa and a spades tournament gets going with one Black team from Des Moines losing in the first round and then spades hitting ESPN 8: The Ocho with no Black people and being moderated by Bill O’Reilly”
Look….I know Iowa sounds like this straight up frozen tundra of Whiteness (and it is) but there are enough of us here that we’d have multiple Spades teams in this tourney and we’re going all the way baby! Spades is one of the ways you prove your Blackness hasn’t gone soft by being here too long. Not only here in Des Moines but there’s mad Black folk in Waterloo too. As to Mr. O’Reilly hope all is well, he can kiss the Plantiff and the Wifey.
This may sound crazy but we may lose our claim to our love of God. Now you know nobody love God like Black folk love God, but White people are trying to be on the come up. Do you think Jimmy Swaggert was getting Black folk money like Joel Osteen is getting into TD Jakes’ monies? Mega-churches are trying to get everybody. White folks are joining AME & Baptist churches all willy nilly. Its crazy out here for somebody trying to catch the Spirit.
I want to say fashion, but did we ever really have it? Most of the designers that get shout-outs or made popular by us are White and then they get cred because of who’s wearing it. Yea, you’ve got Sean Jean, RocaWear, Baby Phat, etc. But do those make as much as Tommy, Timbalands, Polo? Or am I out of the loop because I’m in Iowa and have limited access to Black owned products?
@Madame Zenobia,
Am I really first? I’ve never been first before! Its a victory for all of Black Iowa!
@Madame Zenobia,
“Its a victory for all of Black Iowa!”
LMAO!!!
@Made In Hawaii, actually the dude i’ve played with is named “white mike” stats are as follows: avid junk talker, hell of a spades player, seen him run a boston on a nooka, got a black girlfriend, known to drop a black dude who thought he was that nigga to steel on, Im pretty sure he refers to himself in the fourth person (calls himself a nigga)
i haven’t played spades in years got to get my spades on and teach my kids…..
@Madame Zenobia,
Yea, you’ve got Sean Jean, RocaWear, Baby Phat, etc. But do those make as much as Tommy, Timbalands, Polo? Or am I out of the loop because I’m in Iowa and have limited access to Black owned products?
i’m interested to know this too. I mean, my assumption is that sean john is the only black clothing line making serious money, but i could be wrong and sh*t. its happened a couple times before
@Madame Zenobia, Look….I know Iowa sounds like this straight up frozen tundra of Whiteness (and it is) but there are enough of us here that we’d have multiple Spades teams in this tourney and we’re going all the way baby!
no matter what you say to, i will always view Iowa as the frozen tundra of whiteness…actually, that should be a new designation akin to the Dirty South, Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, encompassing Iowa, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming and the DAkotas. Minnesota gets a pass b/c of Prince, Kirby Puckett, and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Oh yes, and Morris Day.
@Panama Jackson, you can’t not throw in the scourge of the anti-party state known as UUUUUUUTAH! (makes my blood run cold just mentioning it, never wanna go)
@Madame Zenobia,
“This may sound crazy but we may lose our claim to our love of God. Now you know nobody love God like Black folk love God, ”
um there was this thing called the Crusades..
I’m depressed now.
Thanks.
@meka,
dont be depressed. its friday and its a recession and we have six inches of new snow on the ground on top of the 6 inches of ice/dirty snow from the storm three weeks ago and…nevermind. i’m depressed now too.
@meka, you’re welcome. i do my part.
whatever you do, don’t pull a “Boner”
too soon?
@Panama Jackson,
Dayum…was it even 24 hours?
*giggling*
@Panama Jackson, *brief aside* I had no idea that Boner’s father was Chekov from the original Star Trek.
Can’t think of anything that’s not because everything is in jeopardy.
“Ain’t no sister gonna get upstaged by a white chick on her her home tuf.
Oh wait. the Sprite Step Off.”
AND let’s not forget the 2009 White Homecoming Queen at Hampton University… this ish is getting out of control.
*smh*
We just shouldn’t have took over so much after abolition of slavery and desegregation. They’re coming back w/ a vengance nastier than the 10 plagues of Egypt…
but we didn’t know.
*sigh*
@Made In Hawaii, it’s cuz black ppl believe in obeyin rules and bein “fair” might need to institute a “jim crow” kinda rule on homecomings and step shows……just sayin
@Blacklaw,
I totally agree with this. Hello, white people invented cheating, nepotism, grandfather clauses and fractions of people and somehow black people missed the memo that this is how to get ahead. Cheating to win is the whitest thing you can do. Stuff a ballot box and enact a 1/8th rule or some shit.
@Blacklaw,
I agree we play fair, we’re welcoming and accepting and although these are good traits that don’t seem to do much in the way of preserving our own or advancing.
@OftenConfused, co-sign but its almost like we generational stockholm syndrome, like the Ritzs (my new word for the whites) were “kind enough to give us freedom” so why put a fight when they co-opt our sh*t. We gotta channel our inner Selassie/Toussant..get out sh*t back.
@Made In Hawaii, i think the main point here is that when white folks enter competitions normally won by Black people and do a good job and the judging is done by humans, the “white folks doing Black stuff well” factor will give an undue advantage.
we see it all the time in the Black community, it’s called “light skint points”
@Panama Jackson,
“light skint points”…I’m so using this
@Made In Hawaii,
iDied at “We just shouldn’t have took over so much after abolition of slavery and desegregation. They’re coming back w/ a vengance nastier than the 10 plagues of Egypt…” LOL
“You don’t remember do you? Exactly.”
Funny.
@iceberbeauty,
welcome and sh*t
@iceberbeauty, yes, welcome.
and thank you. i do try.
Soon there will mess around and be:
-a white 1000-yard rushing running back
-a signature basketball Nike for a white player that brothas will rock
-a white chick setting up a beauty shop for the sistas
There’s already a bunch of white Keishas
We really don’t have that many domains to ourselves at this point.
Probably already have been…but I mean a white cat quick, fast, and dominant enough to where scouts won’t look at ONLY brothers ever again. His name will probably end in -ski too.
@Man About It (of Stuff Ghetto People Like fame),
White running backs aren’t extinct, just endangered, like white receivers and cornerbacks. There was a white running back that was a Heisman finalist this year, so they’re still around, only, not so much…
But here’s something to ponder: who’s the last white guy to have a signature b-ball shoe? Much less a Nike one?
@Maximillian, Pete Maravich had his own Adidas shoe, but I don’t think B-ball shoes were that big back then, let alone signature ones.
@Man About It (of Stuff Ghetto People Like fame),
“-a white chick setting up a beauty shop for the sistas”
I know a few white chicks that can lay some hair.
Would I let them on my head? Probably not.
@miss t-lee,
I never thought I’d let a White girl do my hair either, but my stylist for the last three years has been a White girl and she is bad. She helped me grow my hair and keep it healthy, her weaves are the truth (I keep my own hair though.) I started going to her after I saw how she did my friends hair and I’ve been going ever since. Her shop isn’t just for Black folk though, she can do anybody’s hair. I really like that I don’t have to sit in the shop for five hours while she tries to do my hair and ten other peoples at the same time.
@Madame Zenobia,
Yeah…it’s the same way here. The white chicks that do Black hair, do all types of hair. So I can’t really knock their hustle, way to expand your business…lol
*IDK, I’m still iffy about letting one of them do mine, but hey…ya never know.
@Madame Zenobia, uh oh another white person with the “growing hand” a la dude from “Good Hair”
black stylists need to be put on notice
@Man About It (of Stuff Ghetto People Like fame),
“-a signature basketball Nike for a white player that brothas will rock”
this is the main the reason why the nfl has eclipsed the nba in american popularity. while the nfl glamor position is dominated by white men (manning, brees, brady, big ben, etc), there hasnt been a white american nba superstar since…larry bird. (not counting john stockton and chris mullin as superstars). basically, its easier for “mainstream” america to be dogmatic about a sport where the super duper stars look somewhat like them
@The Champ,
Never thought about this but I’m sure this is true (or at least a factor). See this is why I read VSB!!!
@The Champ, one reason that is, is because just like how the prototype scouted running back or wideout is a brother to the exclusion of all others, the prototype scouted QB is a 2520, and he’s a lock for the NFL is his first name is Matt.
It’s probably gonna stay that way as long as we have guys like JaMarcus Russell going bust so loudly.
@Man About It (of Stuff Ghetto People Like fame), Well….we still have the 100-yd dash and the Ques…..
no?
2520s walking dogs at 3am is a tell-tale sign that your hood is changing. That means they’re not scared/cautious anymore.
They can have the Tyler Perry Movies. And House of Payne. And that Meet the Browns Show too. I’ll wrap ‘em up in one of Madea’s moo-moos. As long as Scorsese is not directing Belly 4 we should be okay on that front.
Oh, and the day that THIS drops in full will mark the official death of R&B so they can vulturize that too.
But, if more YTs are swagga-jackin’ does that make it more socially acceptable now?
@Maximillian,
2520s walking dogs at 3am is a tell-tale sign that your hood is changing. That means they’re not scared/cautious anymore.
ive said this a million times before, but i’ve always maintained that white people are safer in the hood than black people are. like, a white guy jogging through garfield (one of pittsburgh’s worst neighborhoods) wouldnt be susceptible to harm the same way i would be if i were just walking through
@The Champ, it depends on what hood cuz in my old neighborhood in DC, ledroit park/bloomingdale, white people STAY catching Ls. i’m on the listserv and there’s always some white person out at 2am walking around getting their iPod tooken.
yes tooken.
or getting tied up. black folks in bloomingdale (DC) dont play.
@Panama Jackson,
DC stand up!
It aint just in Norf East either. Gallery Place startin to get a lil grimy. Wait til it warm up and all the youngins in sittin on the steps across from the Verizon Center. I seent many 2520s cross at F and 7th to avoid them.
@The Champ,
I’ve always noticed this. I think it’s because black ppl are scared to mess with the 2520′s but have no problem effing up our own. I don’t get this mentality.
That’s part of the reason why 2520′s can take over the hood because when they move in one section at a time nobody runs them out and the spread. However if “well to do” black folk tried to bring up that same area they would be ran out with crime.
the chicks droppin it at the end made that a “good” performance….the rest was regular
I did see the whole thing and I will say everyone was very regular even the Bruhz….(sigh)
side note…..whats up with Kappas and Alphas referring to themselves as “bruhz”
side side note whats up with Alphas rockin gold boots……like my gramma used to say: “when u start ackin like that?”
Negroes is Legal
@Blacklaw, My side notes were just in general had nothing to do with the performances……..a ni99a just sayin
@Blacklaw,
“side side note whats up with Alphas rockin gold boots……like my gramma used to say: “when u start ackin like that?”
Nearly ran up on a young man rockin some gold boots, til I realized that some thing was off…idk, I think it was some kinda band thing. Needless to say, I was a bit disturbed by the sh#t….
@DG, can’t have nothin nice……”they shoulda neva gave you ni99as money!”
@Blacklaw,
Lol…Rooo.
@Blacklaw,
As an Alpha, there are things I will no longer rock or ever rock.
Purple or red shirts or sweaters
Gold boots
Even though I used to love the song and even heard it this morning, I had to change the radio from Atomic Dog.
Bruhz
A red car or motorcycle (can’t ride Honda cycles, maybe a Ducati but it will have to be another color).
@SBMinNoVA
@Shawn Smith,
I feel you frat on the Atomic Dog, but I still jam to it, just not in mixed company.
We sang a very solemn and somber rendition of the frat hymnal at the wedding reception of one of my LB’s – only for it to be followed up by, you guessed it, the DJ rocking Atomic Dog as soon we concluded. The 2520 DJ on staff at the facility didn’t know any better; a Que told him that we might enjoy that. It was hilarious and not funny at the same time.
@Caballeroso,
I almost fell out of the floor laughing at your Atomic Dog story.
Leave it to a Que.
@Caballeroso, that is some Que ish……you’d a done it too don’t front
Another one for the list. Black girls having the distinction of being the only one with booty. The problem could be the lack of health prevention plans (Obama we need that health care reform like yesterday) or Becky is spending too much time at Tyrone’s annual BBQ. However, when you have folks like Reggie Bush wifey turning heads on the red carpet, black girl (yes.you Angel Lola Luv) are using surgical enhancements to maintain their throne.
@aceklub,
as a black chic with very little booty this angers me. although almost all my sisters can out do me at least take comfort that least I had more booty than a white chic…not anymore
@OftenConfused, the booty obession is getting ridic…as medium-sized possesor of booty I no longer attention. Now the standard for the rear has been set high thanx to these non-Blacks. You have to an astronomically large booty to get a look. (Yeah I know I should want be acknowledged for my cute face, intelligence …but i don’t do my squats for health, lol )
@aceklub, In addition to that, white girls are getting fuller lips now with face yoga, surgery, and magical lip gloss. Also I don’t know if people have been paying attention the the fashion industry, but white models are wearing Afro wigs, (Louis Vuitton’s 2010) a lot of store mannequins (H&M, Forever 21) are wearing Afro wigs as well. I don’t know what this is all about but natural sisters uniqueness are in jeopardy as well…
@T, lip yoga?- liar(insert Jay-z quote)… mannequins with afros- what part of the game is this?-smh
@Yeah…SO!?!, It’s shocking but true. Check out youtube, there’s tons of video of how yoga facial exercises can create fuller lips…
@T, that’s so stupid- who the heyll sits and thinks up freggin lips enhancing exercises… the isht pink elephants do kills me (naw l like 2520 better)
@T,
y’know what’s crazy? Becky and Susie and literally working their arses on and spending Daddy’s money like nothing in order to get AAAALLLLL of the typical features we Black women have (well…most of us)…and yet, the brothas are jumpin’ off of bridges to get a better view of Becky’s arse and are amazed that Susie can actually drop it on beat….boy I tell ya…
@aceklub,
Another one for the list. Black girls having the distinction of being the only one with booty.
you know what though? “other” women have always had booty (not booty like a typical sista, but booty nonetheless). its just that they’re not scared to show it off anymore
@The Champ, i agree with that. they used to cover it up with sweaters or ace bandages.
@Panama Jackson,
ace bandages?!?!
@aceklub,
White chicks down here stay bootied up! They have big, round booties and small ass waits. And I am talking about lily white Becky… not Myriam the Persian girl.
@Sula,
You ain’t lying…lmao
@Sula,
“Myriam the Persian girl.”
So I can use Myriam as the Persian “Becky”? If I catch any heat for this I’ll tell them Sula said it was ok.
I honestly think they can have all of that ish…I’ll take a presidency and a decent black movie every ten years…Boomerang, Love Jones, The Wood, Love and Basketball, and the Best Man…eff it.
@themagicman, I’m riding witchu on this one, Loves me some Barack Obama, but on the movie tip- wouldn’t it be bout time for one of those sans Tyler Perry? just sayin, short of the Indie films…where doze at?
@themagicman, Damn right! I’ll take Obama any day.
@themagicman, i’m not giving up spades homey. i’m just not.
I think 2520 has realized for a minute now that they’re too white for their own good. Hence all their cultural tourism (step shows, becoming Five Percenters & Rastas, etc) and all their jokes about how overwhelmingly white some of their ways and tastes really are (e.g. this):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9no3GKfAegk
@Man About It (of Stuff Ghetto People Like fame), i’m sorry…white Five percenters?
i’d need to see that in person.
@Panama Jackson, I know quite a few. The first one the founder taught was a guy named Azreal (that’s the actual spelling)
*Looks at the vid* Wow, that won(i mean tied)
Didn’t a similar thing happen on MTV’s True Life??
Hip Hop: the Grammy gave best hip hop album of the year to Eminen for Relapse. (MEGA side eye) Someone need to explain to me why Jay-z wasn’t even consider.
Get scare Mr. Jackson, now with this new book publish they will be coming for our women:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/02/24/AR2010022405727.html?hpid=topnews
The End is Near
@Mr. Gundam,
Hip Hop: the Grammy gave best hip hop album of the year to Eminen for Relapse. (MEGA side eye) Someone need to explain to me why Jay-z wasn’t even consider.
honestly, the grammy’s should have just said “pass” when it came to best hiphop album last year.
@The Champ, My bad I was just pissed when I saw that. I’m not even a Jay-Z fan and I couldn’t believe they overlook blueprint 3 after it was recognize as a number 1 for its first two weeks and Jay-Z beat Elvis in number one albums. you couldn’t give Relapse as a xmas gift. Ugggh I have a feeling the Oscars is gonna piss me off *rant over*
@Mr. Gundam,
My homegirl JUST sent me that article.
Ugh…
Happy Black History Month!
@Mr. Gundam, i don’t care how many books get published about this topic (and frankly, i’m starting to get tired of the topic, though i’m a Black man and perhaps nobody cares), but like we said here, a majority of Black men and women marry eachother.
plus, everybody knows that can’t nobody love a Black woman like a Black man. and apparently Robert DeNiro
@Panama Jackson,
and frankly, i’m starting to get tired of the topic
I got tired like 3 months ago! Enough already.
@Panama Jackson,
“plus, everybody knows that can’t nobody love a Black woman like a Black man.”
This is all I’m sayin.
“and apparently Robert DeNiro”
LOL!
Interesting points you make here Sir…
#1: While Spades is the universal Hood past time, cards is cards. As long as you know the diff between a book and a possible, I don’t care what color you are.
#2: I feel you on this, but many of our HBCUs need the help…alot of them barely have enough students to remain viable (i.e.,you went to the ‘House, PJ, so you know what kinda shape Mo Brown is in)
#4: R&B has had some 2520 representation for a minute, tho. Hall & Oates are generally considered soft-rock, but them dudes made some classic R&B cuts. The Doobie Bros. (ft. Michael McDonald)??? YammoBeThere??? C’mon man….you gotta respect the soul…
#6: I’m on the fence about this one…like you said, producers are becoming less black, and many of the ppl buying/supporting the music ain’t us. Besides, with the amount of crap that gets airplay (see Yo Gotti, WackaFlocka dude, etc.), perhaps a diff perspective/approach is necessary to push artists and their labels to be more creative… less formulaic.
Perhaps there is a sort of racial equilibrium at play here. For every major accomplishment or blk 1st achieved on our part, there is a consequential accomplishment in Negrodom by a 2520. For every brother/sister who’s named CEO of a Fortune 500, a 2520 is named valedictorian at an HBCU. For every brother elected US President, a 2520 angel up in heaven get his wings!!
@DG, yup white folks been known about spades and yes them dudes can play if they live in the hood and they are confidently at a table at a bbq….trust they have been properly vetted
cosign on the hall and oats….them dudes can sang…..actually i dont know if Oats can sing or not
lmao @ a 2520 gettin his wings….that’s classic material right there
@Blacklaw, str8-up “Man Eater” and “I Can’t Go For That”- SON!?!…
@ DG, LMAO @ “Yamo be there”
@DG, ’bout #2 (just wondering)- would it be so bad to drop the whole HBCU thing (I went to Hampton, so put the gun down)? I’m just sayin, I haven’t done any research which I might (or might not), but I thought HBCUs were started so the children of slaves could get an education or something like dat. Isn’t it a little out dated now? Not to mention, all the money we’re missing is luda(no chris)… I mean some(and by some I mean ALL) of our schools are giving 2520 FULL scholarships JUST to attend- BS.
And then, when we graduate they don’t even consider us to be on the same level… which brings up my point… how can we get “them” to see we’re just as good as they are if we only learn from and compete with ourselves?
@Yeah…SO!?!,
I’m kindly putting the gun back under the pillow as I must concede that you do raise a valid point. I just can’t wrap my mind around letting go of the HBCU’s.
While at Southern, it was pointed out how HBCU’s bridge the gap by offering a sort of second chance opportunity to some who may not have been focused in high school who would have otherwise not gotten into college. The HBCU’s would have more relaxed admissions criteria and offer remedial classes for those who needed catch up. I see HBCU’s as providing a vital community service in this regard.
@Caballeroso, While at Southern, it was pointed out how HBCU’s bridge the gap by offering a sort of second chance opportunity to some who may not have been focused in high school who would have otherwise not gotten into college.
i think thats part of the problem with some HBCUs. how the hell are you going to give a second chance to somebody who perhaps shouldn’t have graduated in the first place. that’s how you get folks who do graduate who can barely read. while i’m all for hbcus (clearly), i kind of have a problem with remedial classes being offered in college. how the hell do you graduate from high school only to be taking remedial classes in college. no wonder so many hbcus suffer from low graduation rates and student bodies that honestly don’t know sh*t from shineola.
we shouldn’t be treating our HBCUs like community colleges with 4 year degrees, but thats how some operate.
@Caballeroso, I’m not sayin they should stop their process, I’m just sayin why be so obvious with it?… Do we HAVE to anounce to the world our intentions- like in a game of poker or spades(hehe) telling the other team what cards you got prolly ain’t the way to go… they usually find a way to use it against you.
@DG, (i.e.,you went to the ‘House, PJ, so you know what kinda shape Mo Brown is in)
MoB is still operating???
and the R&B thing was a stretch anyway, there have always been dope white boys on the soul music scene like Bobby Caldwell, thing is, we just used to run it. now…folks look to Robin Thicke for good music.
i just don’t get it b/c i’m not a fan of his at all. his voice and music annoys me.
@Panama Jackson,
“i just don’t get it b/c i’m not a fan of his at all. his voice and music annoys me.”
them might be fighting words!!
@OftenConfused, fight deez. he sucks.
@Panama Jackson,
“MoB is still operating???”
I think they have an enrollment of 20 students…give or take.
Yeah, Robin Thicke is okay…of all the current blue-eyed soulsters, Jon B is still my fave…don’t know how blk ppl can be all up on Robin Thicke and JT and NOT fool with Jon B…dude had some classic cuts….
@DG,
“As long as you know the diff between a book and a possible, I don’t care what color you are.”
Hahahaha, co-sign!
@DG, well 2520s did have this thing called called slavery and Jim Crow laws that gave them 400 years of equilibrium…they don’t need more homie!!
We need 360 more years of Black folks takin over white folks worlds before they get passes. We have much work to do in Negrodom, chop chop guys!!
Those girls were steppin’ their azzes off!
Im sleepy.
@QueenT, my life is better because of your comment. i’m not sure what it was like before i read your comment but it is surely better now.
I’m P-Rican and I have to say that often times when people “discover something” and it becomes “mainstream” they act like they put the rest of us on to it…For example..Marc Anthony (Pre-J-Lo) he’s been big in the latin world since like ’91 same for Shakira, Ricky Martin (formerly of Menudo) but when the so-called “Latin Explosion” hit like ’99 all these artists were cosndired “New.” Or even the actress Sofia Vergara on Modern Family, she was big in her native, Colombia. But the biggest mystery to me even now, is how they “discovered” J-Lo’s butt?! They made it famous, to the rest of us she just a nice shape. That’s it! lol
@Miss BXNYC,
Or even the actress Sofia Vergara on Modern Family
she has nice boobs
Ummm, I got nothing. Wait, do we still have Dominoes? I’ve never personally seen a 2520 win at this game with a black person at the table.
@sanen85,
i dont remember the last time i actually saw anyone play dominoes. i live a completely dominoes-less existance
@The Champ, the ninjas that do would all rather shoot dice.
@sanen85, i don’t know that ive ever seen a white person play dominoes. ever.
then again, i dont really know any white people out side of work and family. and my family? totally not playing dominoes.
Im waiting to see black people take on curling and by “DG’s theorem,” that means that white folk get 100m dash or some ish……smh
@Blacklaw,
Word on the street is that Vernon Davis (49ers tight end) is a big fan of curling. So, it’s started.
@Stank-0, he looks like a curler.
@Blacklaw, well, we’ve got Jeremy Wariner in the 400m, is that close enough? Personally, I’m working on taking up curling. No, for real. If you see a black woman curling for U.S. in Sochi 2014, be confident that it will be me. You read it here first folks….!
White folks are losing ground to black folks too.. For so long, the great serial killers were Bundy, Dahmer, Gacy. But look at us now. We got the DC snipers, A. Sowell. I’m sure there are others. You know you got to be on some crazy muthaeff’n ish to kill people, bury them in your backyard and keep a head as a souvenir in the house all while you got the Mayor’s neice living with you. Used to be a day when I could hear something absolutely horrific on TV and know, with confidence, that it was some woods dwellin’, tobacco chewing, army fatigue wearing, cousin screwing cracka @$$ cracka. Now, not so much.
White folks ain’t gon never get us in the outrageous hair category. We got too much Yakki, glue, and time on our hands to let that distinction slip through our collective fingers. Who else you know go to the shop on Friday with the outfit, handbag, or stilettos she planning to wear out Saturday night so her stylists can match the right color rhinestones in the quick weave and on the acrylics?
@INFJgurl, “White folks ain’t gon never get us in the outrageous hair category. We got too much Yakki, glue, and time on our hands to let that distinction slip through our collective fingers. Who else you know go to the shop on Friday with the outfit, handbag, or stilettos she planning to wear out Saturday night so her stylists can match the right color rhinestones in the quick weave and on the acrylics?”
And since we talkin bout hair, they will never spend 6 to 10 hours sittin up in the shop whilst waitin to get their hair did…i think we got the whole hair associated category on lock, cause don’t ninjas also spend a bunch of time at the barber shop? (not doing their hair, but buyin bootlieg ish from young hoodtrepeneurs )….i ain’t never seen any 2520′s spendin a whole lotta time in barber shops/beauty salons…but i could be wrong. …oh, and we still got the kool aid game on lock, don’t we, and the Crown fried chicken game too, please tell me we haven’t lost those ??? i’m having a complacency flashback …why didn’t anyone bring up any of this ish the other day, we could have already started working on gettin all of our ish back by now…dang ninjas always waitin til the last minute to bring up some important ish like spades & whatnot……
@bajanflchick, I agree w/ you on waiting until the last minute. This year’s Black History Month was a blur- as much as I tried to do with our youth its like nationally nothing next they will try to take that and we will then try to shout and act out… BET played movies like the Matrix? this week… I really could have gone for Lean on Me, Crooklyn, Loves Jones, or Cosby Show or Teen Summit reruns at least…
@bajanflchick ~ Never say never to the crazy black hairdo thing. Exhibit A: Lady Gaga. If ever there was a 2520 that would up the ante on foolywang and negracy, it would be her.
@Neighborhood Hussy, DAMN DAMN DAMN* ain’t nothin safe in Negronia…
@Neighborhood Hussy,
I dunno. Lady Gaga is a celebrity whose living depends on making a scene–so I don’t think that counts. Besides, I’ve seen chicks working at Popeye’s with more outrageous hair.
@Neighborhood Hussy, i just feel a need to mention this here, i’ve tried to not like Lady Gaga, but i love all of the singles she puts out. like love them joints.
you can’t deny the gaga.
@ Panama Jackson
“i just feel a need to mention this here, i’ve tried to not like Lady Gaga, but i love all of the singles she puts out. like love them joints.
you can’t deny the gaga.”
Glad I’m not alone.
Kellz was talking about he was the pied piper…I really think it’s this broad…lol
Got me running around humming “Pokerface”.
Dayum shame.
* I guess it was gonna happen anway, I already love house…lmao
@Panama and miss t-lee,
i just feel a need to mention this here, i’ve tried to not like Lady Gaga, but i love all of the singles she puts out. like love them joints.
you can’t deny the gaga.
Yup. You just can’t deny La Gaga…
@INFJgurl, Ya’ll look good though, thats why some people stay broke in Brooklyn spendin all that money to look good and stilll livivn in the projects for $300 a month.
Panama, more details on ‘the myth’ please (grin face).
@Superior Motherload, girl, you know the myth.
shucks, its the reason more white chicks stay cuddling up to black men in 12 states plus borneo.
LOL! And attracts middle aged white women tourists to Kenyan beaches, year after year.
My first comment is why in the world haven’t you seen the AKA show?
Well the ‘discrepancies’ in my opinion were that it wasn’t an even playing field. Who left the gate open? When we go to their house we have to bring it (From back then to now with corporate america, Venus, Serena, Tiger, Barack, etc.) – when they come to our hse we get all excited and cut them slack and think it’s cute. On the standpoint of the step show: The scores should have come out from each judge after heat came up and that’s what makes it so fishy. After all who would give 2 orgs $100k if they were fairly judged? We don’t want handouts we want to play fair. Which brings me to this: How are you going to have the members of the NPHC be required to have a 3.0 and the non NPHC groups have a 2.0 and on top of that MTV had been following ZTAs around for something with a reality show so what does that say? I give props where props are due they did a great job and stepping is a lot of hard work but they weren’t better than my Tau sorors. They had the NPHC participating in this and didn’t even partner up on a larger more strategic scale to offer money to give back to our communities, offer jobs to the qualified students stepping, internships, co-ops, etc. ok I’m done
I get a little passionate abt these things.
But all in all I see it like this if they were allowed in they should have been allowed to win (if they were the best) just like at Hampton and Morehouse… although I am really pro black separate but equal on these types of things.
Now on to the subject at hand, since it’s so cool to be black now- I think that with all of the things listed on this list… Has anyone said anything about the rising # of Harlem residence?
I would like to say that they will never:
yea Paula Deen I’m talking to you lol
- have some of these ridiculous names we give to our children!
- someone said church but I don’t think they will “have” church like us no time soon.
- cook like us
- dancing (from stepping to dirty south dancing to just making something up and dropping a record)
- their rhythm & shape- they can try but with us it will always come natural and effortlessly.
- relate to the black struggle (jobs, prison rate, school, racial profiling, etc.) our heritage (in all of its shapes and forms) there is still a fine line that they just don’t want to cross. They’re like “oh yall can keep that part we’ll take the rest”
- our arrogance – that comes from within & they can’t relate. Next! *strutting off to I feel too danm good*
@Southern Belle,
When we go to their house we have to bring it (From back then to now with corporate america, Venus, Serena, Tiger, Barack, etc.) – when they come to our hse we get all excited and cut them slack and think it’s cute
interesting point and sh*t. basically, we pander to the pinks
@Southern Belle,
- cook like us yea Paula Deen I’m talking to you lol
Don’t mess with Mama Paula’s cooking though… Her banana pudding is the truth!
Sooooo… basically there was no point to this post.- smh (and to think I read it all the way to the end AND commented- FML)
@Yeah…SO!?!, the point was more love for me. and you love me. accept it. love it.
drink coke.
@Panama Jackson, 3s always be assuming somebody like them… ugh…
ok maybe a lil@Panama Jackson,
Boo
I’m drinking straight Pepsi and 7Up from now on
#7 This reminds me of that new VW commercial where the 2520 family is talking about their “swagger van”. I remember seeing it for the first time and being like…*blank stare*. Since when have 2520s been concerned with acquiring swagger??? So yeah, that one has definitely been snatched from us.
As for the Sprite Step off, my sister and her sorors attended and when they returned home, it was the only thing they could take about for like 3 days. They couldn’t understand how ZTA won and kept saying AKA was robbed (and they’re not even members of that sorotity). Apparently, it was the AKA’s on the University of Arkansas’ campus that taught the ZTAs their routine, so I guess they can claim a vicarious win for that!!!
Regardless, black folks are creative and when something gets taken from us we are very efficient at creating something new and improved and making the stolen goods seem much less desirable. I’m sure we’ll bounce back from all of these losses as well.
@More is More, Regardless, black folks are creative and when something gets taken from us we are very efficient at creating something new and improved and making the stolen goods seem much less desirable. I’m sure we’ll bounce back from all of these losses as well.
not sure i agree with this. i think that when our chains get tooken, we dont desire those things less, if anything, we want them more. we might find some new thing to do, but its reactionary, not on some trailblazing sh*t. when jazz got tooken, black folks didnt like it less, we were pissed. same with the blues/rocknroll though at least a lot of the rock bands paid homage to the blues men they exploited and got rich off of. though still, muddy waters dies broke and led zeppelins lives on in infamy as one of the best bands every (they are).
@Panama Jackson,
still, muddy waters dies broke…
was is it the lack of recognition or just poor life management that killed him?
“2. HBCU’s turning into OINHBCU (Only in Name HBCU)”
I don’t see folks, especially folks who don’t see HBCU’s as “necessary” will get too upset at this…but folk (me) that attended HBCU’s might feel some kind of way…*le sigh* d’oh well
“3. The Hood
Hm. Wait, they got that too, only they changed it from the hood to the neighborhood and brought in Starbucks and started walking dogs at 3am and raised property values so high that folks can’t afford to live there even if they ho themselves out 9 days a week and on Sundays.
Ah! I got one.”
You better stop talking about “The Farms” like that, lol! Y’all heard Orange Star yesterday…talkin’ about “East of the River”…smh
@Smiley Face, yo, word life i saw a condo on sale in Barry Farms (well across the street) for 300k. GTFOHWTBS.
there’s no way in living f*ck that anybody will pay that much to live ADJACENT to what is considered one of the realest hoods in a city deemed Chocolate City. though, once they get rid of Barry Farms, its a whole different area. you put some condos there, white folks are TOTALLY moving in. St. Matthews church service gonna go to a 1 hour service.
@Panama Jackson,
maannn…who you telling? soon as they made MLK down by the big chair “Gateway to Anacostia”; a two-way access street it.was.ovvveeerr.
Wow! I’m shocked.
@Jamaica, i’m sexxy.
@Panama Jackson, I’ve heard about your sexxiness!
This is why black people dont have anything. If you mad, go get yours.
@aBitconcerned,
thats not true. we still have february. and waves
welcome and sh*t, btw
@aBitconcerned, naw, the reason we dont have anything is b/c of a systematic system of systematic oppression that has created systems intended to keep Black people systematically undervalued and underprivleged through turbulent innate systems.
it’s systemic.
Ok. Since everyone’s just gonna ignore the pink elephant in the room, I’m just gonna put it out there – BLACK BLOGS. Yeah, I said it. If we’re not careful, we’ll be losing precious sites such as this one from whitey’s infiltration.
I see it all the time. Black writers who write directly to or for a demographic of Black readers. White people lurk and lurk to see what’s happening like peeking through the window of a party. One white person comes to the door (or leaves a comment) and says something that flatters a couple of the Black partiers. For example, a white guy may pander to the female audience and talk about how he’s dated Black girls before and how much he loves them. He may even throw a white girl or two under the bus in the process. Before you know it, everyone’s rolling out the red carpet and shyt for the white boy. I’ve seen similar instances happen on this very blog.
To a certain degree, Black people still seek white people to validate them and when they do, we welcome them with open arms. (But that’s a another post for another day…)
@Monk, I dunno if this was your intention- but this ISHT had me rolling… it’s so true, sad but true(maybe it was your delivery… I digress)- way to bring ‘em out, bring ‘em out! *watches 2520s exiting quickly and quietly*- lol
@Yeah…SO!?!,
I meant for it to be tongue-and-cheek, but I’m so sincere.
@Monk, I’d like to strike sayin 2520s and replace it with pink elephants… no?- I like it.
@Monk,
Uh oh….
@Monk,
“To a certain degree, Black people still seek white people to validate them and when they do, we welcome them with open arms. (But that’s a another post for another day…)”
I totally agree. This goes back to Wednesdays topic. Until we love ourselves enough to stop this it will continue.
@Monk, Co-sign on the last part. Everytime I hear someone bring that skeleton out it gets real quite.
But, It is something that we really should consider. Is there any group or people or country that doesn’t do anything to try to gain approval by the US Mainstream????
@Mr. Gundam,
Is there any country that doesn’t do anything to try to gain approval by the US Mainstream????
North Korea comes to mind…
The thing that I’m most upset about, that we already lost, is the ability for crazy black woman to scare a white woman. The white chics done grown a pair!
A lil while ago I got in into a parking lot battle with a WW, of course I got the spot but do you know this heffer rolled down her window and started cursing me…then proceded to get out her car and continue. There was a day that she wouldn’t have even tried to get the park once she saw I was eyeing it and she definitely wouldn’t have said anything about it.
My mother and I had an altercation with two WW in the park recently, but they finally hid in the bathroom hut.
Come to think of it, that started in the parking lot too. Hmm maybe I’m too serious about my parking spots.
@OftenConfused,
Come to think of it, that started in the parking lot too. Hmm maybe I’m too serious about my parking spots.
you’re not from cleveland, are you?
@The Champ,
nah both of these encounters were in ATL.
@The Champ,
What? Like people from Cleveland always tryna fight or something? Cuz we could just take this right outside…
I couldn’t see the video thanks fo the JO blocking, but I’m sure I’m not missing much…lol
Dah well.
Slowly but surely they start trying to take over everything because you know, they do own the world. (full sarcasm intended)
*perma eyeroll*
Those white girls should not get any credit. They stole those steps! How do I know, because those formations and steps were created by Deltas, some are over 15years old others were made within the last five years. The sorors that performed them have won regional steps shows and even one in the bahamas but I guess since they didnt compete in a corporate sponsored event no one would ever know. This piss me off so much because the sorors who performed this routine in 07-08 were women who had careers. They werent stepping for fortune or fame, just to rep their organization. Somehow these white girls must have saw a tape because all they did was take certain things out pertaining to delta! This ish makes me mad. The creaters and perfectors of that step are from the Phila/West Chester area and if they ever want to “step up” there are so many tapes to prove it. Unfortunately they didnt post their stuff on Youtube. Someone did post a video of them on YouTube but it was only their bruh tribute, because thats how they wanted it. Unfortunately when you dont rep your ish to the fullest, someone will come along and steal it! Those b*#tches are imposters
@pissed off,
“Those b*#tches are imposters”
this actually was the original title of “keeping up with the kardashians”, until the vh1 people convinced them to change it
welcome and sh*t, btw
@pissed off,
I’m sorry to tell you this but every body steals from every one when it comes to putting a step show together.
If you are a Delta, I would think that you would almost …… almost be honored that another non-recognized stepping organization saw something and emulated/imitated a performance, ….. and won.
#imjustsayin
@SBMInNoVA
@Shawn Smith, there’s truth here. i think that thing that i rest upon is this: if those chicks were Black, would that routine have beat everybody else?
again, i aint seen everything else so perhaps it would have. but after 2 minutes, i wasn’t wowed anymore and i was like, look coordinated white chicks, they must be dancers and or competition cheerleaders.
@Panama Jackson,
I thought the same thing when I watched it. If they were Black, would it have been an issue and in my opinion, I would have to say no.
They had a non stop show, some good stepping, and were on point and precise.
The AKA’s. It was some of the same old stuff that I saw 10 yrs ago when I was in school. I didn’t see anything that really had me hype (except maybe the one leg dance line).
This is one of those times I can’t hate.
1. Spades
Spades is debatably the national Black card game.
I didn’t know this was in jeopardy… then again I’m the only black person I know that doesn’t play spades so……
2. HBCU’s turning into OINHBCU (Only in Name HBCU)
I’m more concerned about HBCU’s dying out entirely. Here in Ga “they” have been talking about merging two HBCU’s with their nearby white counter parts for awhile now. Basically merging Savannah State (the oldest public black univ in Ga) into Armstrong univ and Albany state into Darton.
There are only 3 public HBCU’s in Ga, this would eliminate 2.
3. The Hood
We’ve been lost this one.. Regentrification everywhere.
4. R&B and Neo-soul
Although I love Robin Thicke, Justin Timberlake and Amy Winehouse I still think this is an exception to the rule one of the reasons for their popularity is that somethings not right. If it were mire commonplace they would no longer be special (similar to your step show theory)
5. Tyler Perry movies
Yup, he had all those 2520s in A Family that Preys
6. Hip-hop
The way sone “hip hop” is headed (ie stanky leg, all the way turn up, etc) I’ll take whatever help we can get
7. Swagger
This could be a prob but I’ve always known 2520 boys that had some swag (went to a black HS so some 2520 guys had to try and fit in”
8. The myth
NO COMMENT
@OftenConfused, 2. HBCU’s turning into OINHBCU (Only in Name HBCU)

can’t lie…i honestly believe we should eliminate some HBCUs. face it, save for a generous 10 at the top, all HBCUs aren’t exactly offering up the best education available – same for some white schools. we’re only holding on to them out of desperation and frankly, history. i’ve been to an HBCU where i honestly felt like the educaiton those cats were getting was akin to the education i got in high school.
if the school isn’t teaching anybody, is it a school?
@Panama Jackson,
Agreed and since I didn’t attend either one of the schools I can’t say for sure the quality of education that they provide. however I went to the other public HBCU in Ga and think I received a wonderful education on par with the well known PWI I also attended. Sure the PWI was able to provide some extras the HBCU couldn’t (state of the art technology, nice dorms, more courses) I wouldn’t trade my time at my HBCU for anything (the “experience”, the professors that truly cared about teaching and not research, lower student/professor ratio)
@OftenConfused,
So the “experience” is worth a lackluster education?
I doubt that access to more funding would kill it entirely. Heck, they lowered the bar for the Others at my HBCU and the campus still hasn’t changed colors.
Hi everyone,
I’ve been reading this blog for a few months and today is the first time I feel compelled to write. I just watched the video but because I have nothing to compare it to (I’ve never seen women stepping) I can’t say whether the win was justified or not. What I did want to mention is something that Monk touched on. Many of us are so happy when white people do something that is considered “black” because many of us still suffer from an inferiority complex. We click our heels at any sign of acceptance from them and run to give away many aspects of our culture only to have it repackaged and sold back to us. it’s like we think who we are and what we do have no merit until it gets the “White People Official Stamp of Approval.” Yes, we continue to evolve and create, but I just wish we respected our own creations as much as we respect the opinions of people who don’t respect us.
@Grateful1,
welcome and sh*t
@The Champ
Thanks and whatnot
@Grateful1, yes welcome. and i agree. i feel inferior. i’m waiting for a white person to come in here and tell me they agree just so i feel whole again.
@Panama Jackson,
I agree, you’re good.
@Alos, whew! glad i got that out of the way!
welcome and sh*t
@Panama Jackson,
Maybe they should tell you that you a 4!
@Caballeroso, Hey I’m a 4. Back off lol
@Grateful1,
Thanks for voyaging through my mind, gathering my thoughts, and verbalizing them in such a way.
Panama: I applaud you for this list!! *standing atop desk in cubicle w/ Black Power fist raised*. Forget FAMU, if you started shouting this info through a megaphone.. people will follow you and listen.
Just to add some extra salt to the wound:
Tyler Perry:I’m due for another 2month assignment in Cheeseland a.k.a. Holland. Life is f*ckin’ sad when white Dutch folks are able to recite entire Madea monologues to me!?
The Hood: I’ve lived in the Flatbush Ave. of Brooklyn almost my whole life. Why is it my family could be cool w/ getting groceries at the Associated market run by some cool Boriquas, but when ‘Sally & Bob WhiteGood’ move in they MUST have a D’agostino’s near by…or they simply won’t buy food in Brooklyn?? F.U. YT!!! (dying of laughter right now..cuz I’m married to Casper himself..LOL)
R&B Neo-Soul: Joss Stone, with her ‘posh’ accent and all…. Umm.. tell me Miss Stone, do the ‘lads’ in Kent really say things like “Supa Dupa, diggin’ on you” as they stroll down the street? I doubt it… And Justin Bieber (evil Canadian soul-music succubus!!!)= one 2520 Justin is already one too damn many= off w/ your head!
Swagger: there was an annoying white girl from Nashville (Kesha?Keysha?) w/ that damn “Tik Tok” song last year: I believe the phrases ‘you know we got swagger’, and ‘po-po shut us down’ are in that tune. All points of swaggerdom are now null and void for the entire Black community. Thanks Trailer Trash Tina!
And finally…
UNO! The last time I played that was in ’86, with my cousins in Honduras. Up until that point, I swore it was a game invented by and for Black-Latinos. Then I saw some of the mean Irish girls at my grade school playing it in the yard=crushed.
@GeekChicness, Kesha looks as if she has an odor.
@Wuyoung Agent of M.E.,
*nods head*
LOL! So true!
@Made In Hawaii, And not the “I just got done with my yoga class.” odor either.
@GeekChicness, “my family could be cool w/ getting groceries at the Associated market run by some cool Boriquas, but when ‘Sally & Bob WhiteGood’ move in they MUST have a D’agostino’s near by…or they simply won’t buy food in Brooklyn?? F.U. YT!!! (dying of laughter right now..cuz I’m married to Casper himself..LOL)”
or Whole Foods, which is also the rage, but no more Key Food, or Bravo???WTF?-and ROFL @ married to Casper himself, no seriously……*dead
@GeekChicness,
DEAD at the entire comment. i remember the first time on national television i heard a 2520 say the word swagger. i will set the scene. i was watching x-factor ( british version of american idol but slightly different, though you stole idol from us but i digress) and one of the judges is a ‘singer’ called cheryl cole so th act finishes and then all of a sudden she says the word, mind you shes from a place called newcastle so it sounded like suwagah. i have never excessively cringed like that my entire life.
@GeekChicness, F.U. YT!!! (dying of laughter right now..cuz I’m married to Casper himself..LOL)
Charles Barkley. is that you?
OVER MY DEAD BODY!!!
I saw some video of the AKAs, and the were better. Besides, the Matrix is sooo 2002.
@N.I.A. naturally,
So if the Matrix is “sooo 2002″, what is Rhythm Nation? (1989)
#imjustsayin
@SBMInNoVa
@Shawn Smith,
So if the Matrix is “sooo 2002?, what is Rhythm Nation? (1989)
Yes… but it’s Janet. And, I mean I’ve seen people do Matrix theme in step routines since 2002. From what I saw of the AKAs, which wasn’t much, the routine seemed pretty original. ZTA… not so much. Though, it doesn’t really matter since the judges scored it higher and declared them the winners. But, I’m not Greek, I’m just outside observer/former HBCU student who has seen a lot of stepping.
@N.I.A. naturally, the AKAs did a rhythm nation routine? LOL. if that’s true then i’m with shawn smith, that matrix is so 2002 goes right out the window. i dont give a shit if it is janet or not. rehash is rehash.
a Belle in BK related post asked yesterday, do we own our blackness? my answer thats an emphatic abd resounding YES..imitation is never the real thing.
May I also add we have been the flavor in this countries batter(Diamond D) since we got here….once the masses catch on usually we are already home, honey meaning five steps ahead LOL
@Orange of the good SE! Phcuk “River East” o_O,
ahem…..we always been the leaders…..
@kingpinenut, in terms of cool and fly slick YESSSS and I for one am not in the least bit threatened… I am assured of this!!!!
@kingpinenut,
i meant amen…
i’m still asleep……
Things that we will lose if we don’t pay attention.
1) Swag
There use to be a time when Black folks just oozed with swag. I mean Black folks=cool. When I look at movies, documetaries, etc. of Black folks in the 60s and 70s we had mad swag. It’s crazy because Black folks don’t even have the same accents they had back then. Now that we got what we wanted (which is to be integrated into the mainstream) I think our flavor has been diluted.
2) Hip-Hop
The more superficial the music becomes the easier it is for someone to enter without paying dues.
3) @ss and curves
Black and Latino have had this on lock until recently. Outside of Sixx on Blossom you never really saw a 2520 chic with @ss. Nowadays? I’ve seen 2520s that will put some sisters to shame.
4) Soul Food
Here in Detroit you got Middle Easterners with fish and chicken spots. I’ve even seen some of them actually cooking it. Usually they have a Black woman or man in the back doing the cooking. Growing up all the Soul Food places I went to were Black owned.
@Humble_One,
In moderation? Why?
@Humble_One,
“There use to be a time when Black folks just oozed with swag. I mean Black folks=cool. When I look at movies, documetaries, etc. of Black folks in the 60s and 70s we had mad swag”
Swag, or style, goes both ways. Often ppl take cues from one group and assimilate it into their own style. Case in point: skinny jeans….alot of young rappers (and brothers in general) wear ‘em now, but they likely took the style from young, grunge/ punk rock-loving white boys. Hell, just look at the rock bands from the 70s, 80s, etc….cats been wearing nuthuggers for years, so who got whose swag from whom? Besides, so many ppl nowadays just rock with fads/trends…not too much originality anymore, esp. among us.
As for @ss and curves, this has been coming for a minute now. I know here in the South, 2520 women eat many of the same things blk women eat….stuff like grits, fatback, bbq, etc. On top of that, alot of them are in the gym workin it out. Combine this with the fact that curves are in now, and Becky is suddenly a contender….I’m just sayin.
@DG,
Often ppl take cues from one group and assimilate it into their own style. Case in point: skinny jeans…
when wannabes go wrong.
@Humble_One, Soul food we can deal with losing. The more black folk shy away from soul food the longer they keep their limbs. I mean “Soul Food” got “Big Mamma’s” legs amputated and then killed her but her family celebrated her life by eating the same ish that did it. We can let the Middle Eastern folks have it. Plus, there isn’t anything wrong with having hummus as side with your fried chicken.
And boy do I detest stepping!!! It reminds me of menstrual shows and if white people want that and cooning on reality TV, they can have it. Thank goodness for Jersey Shore because it helps folks forget about the quagmire called Flava of Love.
Maybe it’s me, but none of this stuff really matters, since black folks still don’t have 2520 money, even though our ancestors spent over 4 centuries toiling in the hot sun picking cotton.
You folks can argue about step shows, spades, and chicken if you want, Personally, I’m working to collect my gd 40 acres and a mule.
From the Cherry.
P.S. The reason why YTs can jack us is because we’re so quick to give them a pass, while condemning each other for no reason at all.
@Cherry Darling, I was wondering the same thing too. I don’t care what they “take”. Are we increasing in educational and corporate prowess? Are we starting to get our foot into the door of world class businesses? Are we creating said businesses? Are we part of the movers and shakers in the economy? Blacks around the world are claiming stake, I am looking forward to Blacks here doing the same…let everybody else get preoccupied with “swagger jacking”, lets move into areas that really matter, areas that they have dominated for so long.
*ahem*
Yall DO know spades was started in Cincinnati right?!?!
That is all
@V Renee, Look at u with admiration and a circumspect side eye at the same time….
@V Renee,
Paperwork? Patents? Anything beside folklore to back that up?
Oh yeah, I hate to tell you this but I think the myth might be in jeopardy. Having had the (mis)fortune to see older black peen (live and in memorex), black tallywangs done shrunk.
Hmmm, I might need to date older men more often.
@meka, really?
What do you call older……cause um I don’t phcuk wit youngins anyway and for me thats anything under 30……
I’m overwhelmed with work on a Friday #FML… so i can only reply and not really read the other comments too in depth… hope i’m not stating anything others have already said.
As a member of a BGLO Sorority (Delta), I was highly upset by the ZTA’s involvement, let alone winning, of the competition. The discrepancy that allowed Kays to tie was ZTA being a SOCIAL org and the 100k scholarship was to be awarded to a SERVICE org.
My sentiments on this event— I’m not for PHC orgs participating in NPHC events period. The sole reason many BGLO came to be is because of being denied entry into these organizations, so what did our Founders do? They created their own. Not only do they take our culture, but they win at an HBCU during Black history month, oh the irony lol!
I don’t give the Kays much credit but the AKAs taught them they’re whole routine which is evident in their form… and they stole the table stunt from alpha chapter Kays… They say, and by they i mean the very credible folks of twitter, politics came into play somewhere for the TV show. IDK about that but my gripe is that none of the judges were Greek. How do they know what to look for in a show other than what looks good? What about difficulty, precision, stunts and steps that are unique to specific orgs?! It kills me when anything goes mainstream and in turn gets cheapened (hip hop & now stepping).
I cringed during certain parts of their routine and wondered if they truly understood (or cared about) the history behind what they were doing or were they just mocking us? Is this another extension of white girls wearing butt pads and getting lip injections because certain parts of black culture is “in” right now? Were they just a cheerleading squad (their national website calls them a “step dance team”) who got bored with their normal routines?
I went to a PWI and one year Chi Omega sorority wanted to participate in the NPHC step show (they were inspired after participating in a org-wide unity event called Greek week, where NPHC and PHC groups were paired together to do strolls, etc).There was much turmoil on the campus regarding it (much like in this case) b/c it was an obvious mockery… they got on the stage and did Patty Cake *points to face* With that said, I do give them credit for stepping hard and executed well, but i think historical and cultural aspects should sometimes be respected and observed from afar… imitation is not always the highest form of flattery…
@Eks M, Well Damn.
Roo Soror
@Blacklaw, Oop-Roo to the good bruhs!
@Eks M,
Hi Soror! Hey Bruh! You brought up some excellent point in your comment. I haven’t read many comments myself. My collegiate chapter participated in this competition and I wasn’t upset in the slightest that they didn’t win or place. I was concerned that the prize money did not go to a Divine 9 Organization in terms of what good that money could have done in our communities. The fact that you mentioned that they are not a service organization bothers me further. I was also concerned that these women won, not by formulating their own routine, but by learning another organizations routine and/or historical steps. I also did wonder if they won because they truly wrecked or because they “wrecked good enough for a white team”. You mentioned that the judges were not Greek. Does anyone know who they were?
@legitimate_soul, Hey Soror,
The judges were Chilli of TLC, Monica, NeNe Leakes, Ludacris… and i feel like i’m forgetting one
@Eks M, thats funny…..any of them even been to college?….just sayin
@Eks M,
You tell ‘em Soror!!
@BKSweetheart,
OO-OOP to you Soror… glad to see we represent here!
@BKSweetheart & @legitimate_soul,
OO-OOP Sorors, glad we’re on here representing
@Blacklaw i’m with you… ppl watch Stomp the Yard, get hype about stepping and well there you have it… lol!
@Eks M,
OO-OOP My Sorors and ROO to the Bruhs!!
This is what I think about the whole ZTA thing.
The #1 culprit of ZTA winning is… US!!! Too much complacency and entitlement. For the past 10 years, how many times are we gonna see video clips, skits, long breaks for breathing, and now America’s Best Dance Crew breaks in Step Shows? ZTA stepped non-stop for almost 10 minutes!! STEPPED. Even though the stole it.. They stole well. Everyone has seen Drumline, School Daze, Stomp the Yard, and A Different World.. So, NPC greeks now wanna do it the best too!! I went to a Non-HBCU. Back when NPHC first started INVITING NPC folks to join Yard Shows and Step Downs, people thought that it was cute that they “attempted” to step… Cut to 2010.. It is not a game now..
I will personally declare it a true 2520 Invasion State of Emergency when I c a YT Dance Hall Queen in Jamaica, until then carry on 2520s!
@Say-It-An’t-So, Bwoy stop! I will personally KILL MYSELF the day that happens!
@Say-It-An’t-So,
Does the Japanese DanceHall Queen a couple of years ago, who came all the way from Japan to win, count as better or worse than a 2520? Their reggae clubs go hard in Japan
Too late on #2. White corporations are the main donors to these institutions and therefore have implied, indirect control over the administration and curriculum. Even ignoring that fact, Integrationist, bougie Negroes usually run these schools (not all, there are still some revolutionaries aka warrior scholars holding on) and it usually ends up with “our” schools looking like Black versions of white schools. These schools are turning out plenty of white minds in Black bodies, who probably don’t even know what that statement means.
@OrangeStar616-
When I say older, I’m talking 45 and older (I’m not saying that’s old, it is just older than me). I’m 37 and have always attracted older men.
@meka, Oh aight cause I’m 35 soon to be 36, and the men I tend to prefer are close to my age maybe 34 to 40…I can’t speak on youngins LOL altho that naked pic of Santonio Holmes indicates not all youngins are lackin, and he wasn’t even on HARD LOL
Wtf is all this about cultural/racial ownership and loss? <_< *side-eye*
@MeteorMan,
Some of this is just funnin’ and some of it has more serious implications. I don’t think folks here have a problem with anyone legitimately earning anything they worked for or partaking in any activity they enjoy and respect. Yet, when something has a cultural and historical significance and it blows up just because someone else of another race does it and it cuts off those originators and that culture from benefiting from what is culturally their’s to begin with…yeah, it’s a problem. There is a long history of this and it is valid to address it and call it for what it is. I didn’t have a problem with the white valedictorian at Morehouse. He attended that school, contributed to that campus community (from the article I read) and made the grade. The article I read on him made him seem like he was a decent person. I do have an issue of a HBCU college queen who allegedly the students didn’t know, doesn’t contribute to the campus and the student body did not vote for, but is to represent THEM.
@legitimate_soul, I agree… that Miss HU mess was BS… not because she was white tho (that was adding insult to injury for me).
@legitimate_soul,
Tell em Soror!
*joking* Has dominoes been infiltrated? *seriously* I still only see black folks and latinos slappin’ bones.
@legitimate_soul,
everyone plays bones man
@panama: Thanks for the Iowa shout out..’preciate it haha
Black ppl from Iowa never get any love…
Oh yeah one more to add… Natural hair, if i see one more YT person with “locs” i’m gonna Earl
@Eks M,
Don’t come down here then…lmao
My city is full of them.
@miss t-lee,
Where are you at? I’m in DC and any venture onto U Street guarantees at least 47 spottings, lol!
See the thing is you can co-opt it but you can’t steal the essence. I almost feel like it is just in black folks’ soul to create forms of expression.
You could say that 2520s are stealing slang. No they are actually about 5 paces behind catchin onto the old shyt after it’s been discarded.
We are complaining about some WGs winning a step show by copying some moves. I understand the anger but I would be a bit more upset if they created some entirely new steps and then beasted the competition.
I guess my take home is everyone wants to be black w/o being black. You can’t cherrypick the aspects you like and expect acceptance. Having rhythm/swag/cool comes at the price of the po-lice thinkin you are a walking target.
@Stank-0,
I also want to see every 2520s hood pass, no exceptions. The reason I DON’T need to see another BPs is b/c once I see the skin tone, lips, hair, etc. I already know they have to deal with 2520s BS on the daily. They get that pass, you my non-melanin enriched compadre, don’t. Show ME YOUR PAPERS!
This ZTA group rocked and did their thing.
This post is rife with racism.
As a white person…. what would black people say if I wanted to make a list of what white people are losing to blacks: The presidency, (Barak Obama), golf, (Tiger Woods), swimming, (That black dude in the olympics), speedskating, (That black dude in the other olympics)…
At least we still have ice hockey?
The crowd loved these girls. Maybe an educated post and review would have been one where the author actually saw all the competition and then provided their assessment and analysis?…. Just a thought.
I though the civil rights movement was about bring people together.. not further dividing us….
@JLW, ugh. whatever. this is NOT a racist post at all and your “reverse racism” examples don’t even apply because at no point were white people oppressed by blacks in this country.
@Liz,
Okay! Plus, JLW didn’t even think to google to find out who “That Black Guy” is to make his/her own argument. LOL!
@legitimate_soul
and spelled the President’s first name wrong..it’s Barack, not Barak…that wouldn’t have been too difficult to find …
@JLW, welcome and sh*t.
i personally wouldn’t give two sh*ts if you or any other white person wrote that post. hell, i’m sure it’s already been written somewhere. humor is humor. and given that list, it seems like there’s a good reason white people would have to come up with that list (luckily, you did!). shucks, with Black folks taking over arenas that are white strongholds, well, its definitely worthy of discussion. though i dont even know who “that black dude” is in swimming. the only swimmer name i know is michael phelps.
perhaps an educated review of would consist of the author watching the whole thing. sure would. but that aint what i did. so deal with it. i didnt even say they shouldn’t win. did i?
i dont need to provide assessment or analysis. that’s not my lane, homey. perhaps you should know who you’re reading first. you want analysis, go to CNN. this here is VSB, edutainment is what i do. and the majority of the folks that come here, both white and Black understand that and also get where i’m coming from. you didn’t find it funny, i’m good with that.
rife with racism? lol. yeah, okay.
housing policy. that’s rife with racism. the education system. that’s rife with racism. cities set up with the INTENTION of creating a segregated grid. that’s rife with racism. banking home loan provisions and redlinging. THAT’S rife with racism.
this blog? is humor.
funny how you mention the civil rights movement. that’d be the one where a white guy gunned down the Black guy trying to bring folks together right?
THAT? rife with racism. lol. get your sh*t right.
@Panama Jackson-TEACH! I think that just took you up to at least a *4
@bajanflchick,
I agree PJ def gets that 4 status after that, lol!
@Panama Jackson,
Doubles the three to a six for me!

“““““““““““““““““““““““““““““
is obama black? just asking !
@oliver, Old Purple Lips is black enough!
@oliver, Well, he’s black enough for me. Tavissss, probably not!
@Wuyoung Agent of M.E., his farva* left him…thats black enough for me.
*(i’m from baltimore and the accent is back)
Call me a genius but I don’t see a problem. But then again, I’m not a closet racist.
white girls won a national stepshow – Stepping just went mainstream. Finally black folks have an inherent advantage at what is soon to become a nationalized sport akin to cheerleading and spelling bees.
white people at my HBCUs – unless you went to a private HBCU chances are your schools governing board is (or was at some point) partially white. Besides have you ever played beer bong, a$$hole or any other drinking games that don’t involve turn off the lights and telling secrets? For free because white people love to have someone to drink with.
Spades – You think black people thought up these card games? we had work to do! Besides spades is like the slow class’s bid whist and most white people will never figure that sh*t out.
the hood. – So instead of gunshots and troublesome teenagers on every corner, I get a Starbucks and virtually real-time 911 response? Uh huh.
R&B and Neo-soul – good music is good music. i never got this. it’s not like they are caterwauling or somehow eclipsing the 5 artists that record companies allow us to pay attention to. Some of your favorite songs were written by white people, you just don’t know it.
Tyler Perry movies – We should just let them have this one.
Hip-hop – Some of us should be trying to do this one. Have you heard the radio lately? I’m saying, when did it become cool to rap so slow that I can finish your verse like we’re telepathic? Grow a vocabulary.
Swagger – You can’t possess swagger, you can only embody it. That’s why y’all confused. Everybody think they got and they don’t.
Like PJ was saying Wednesday, we’ve gotten stale at life. We talk about how they’re stealing our culture but we’re not even trying to cultivate the important aspects of it. They’re eating our leftovers and we’re crying about it instead of thinking up something new to bring to the table.
@deviant,
You are always a delight to read.
Now I need to see Shay-d-lady’s comment to make my day complete.
@deviant,
Co-sign on everything….keep speaking truth.
And this…”Some of your favorite songs were written by white people, you just don’t know it.” Nothing but truth… without a Clive Davis, there would be no Whitney Houston….without Rick Rubin, there would be no Run DMC or LL Cool James. Goes both ways too, cuz plenty of blk producers in R&B/HipHop have done tracks for B. Spears, Joss Stone, etc.
@deviant,
Co-sign on everything. You nailed it!
@deviant, “Besides spades is like the slow class’s bid whist and most white people will never figure that sh*t out.”
co-signing 100%, -hell I still can’t find 3 other Black people to play with , but on the real…your whole post gets BIG PROPS
@bajanflchick, yep we still got bid whist…not many black people under 40 have figure that game out….and I be strugglin to find 3 other people to play with too…outside my core bidwhist crew
One thing black people might lose if we’re not careful….
ourselves
@Ally, message
I didn’t read all the above comments so pardon me if this has been said:
ASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
They have been steadily moving in on that claim to ass since Hottentot’s tour ended…
This sounds like it would be the plot to to the next Bring It On movie
‘Bring It On 27 – The Step Show’
*cringes*
@Badmovieinthemaking, Yo!!!! that’s not funny. You know that movie would sell tickets and they could used the teams from America Best Dance Crew
@Badmovieinthemaking, OMG I wouldn’t be surprised if Rainforest Productions already drafted this whole scenerio into the script of Stomp the Yard II
@Badmovieinthemaking, Okay I was half joking with my previous reply but I logged onto
and the first thing I see is the Sprite step off on their homepage LMAO!
Shouts out to my fellow FAMU alums BTW
I’m finally getting to see the video of this performance (dang work computer blocked the vid). My thoughts…didn’t see the other performances so I can’t compare them but
They did their thing. Wasn’t the best step performace I’ve ever seen but I’ve been on a step team before and I’d say that was definitely very respectable.
I’ve also been to cheerleader camp so it’s not that shocking that white girls could pick up that routine and pull it off pretty precisely
I will admit I wasn’t ready for them to drop it like that at the end. I might have given them extra points for that too because it’s really not in most white girls DNA to do that well and on beat. (just bein real) They had some genetic deficiencies to overcome.
All in all I don’t know why people got all up in arms over a silly step contest.
As for this list…white folks done already jacked just about everything on this list except maybe spades….can’t speak on the myth…but they got commercials on late night every night that might be helping them overcome that one too
@klysha, “All in all I don’t know why people got all up in arms over a silly step contest.”
which brings us right back to Wednesday….folks worry about “ish” like this, when we got much bigger fish to fry, which just gives me a big a$$ headache *SIGH, my people, my people
haven’t read the comments but…
we took bill clinton, eminem, golf, tennis, speed skating… soon to be hockey… lil wayne is a ‘rock star’ now…the white house… i’mjustsayin.
maybe they’re salty. lol
Paul Mooney told y’all they were going to take anything that we found entertaining, lol.
But on a serious note, I have a hard time (based on personal experience) thinking this is just a matter of race. I kinda feel like a lot of NPHC have problems with any other greek organization, other than themselves, stepping.
Maybe it’s just me, but I just don’t get how Divine 9 organizations can have the corner market on stepping. I’m not saying this just because it was a white group that won. I am a member of an all-black chapter of a music fraternity that, nationally, is multi-cultural. On my campus, we get looked at stupid and sideways by most D9 orgs when we try to do anything remotely black, like stepping, strolling, calls, handsigns, etc.
There will be soon more I bet.

3. The Hood: It’s ok, we’re moving into the suburbs and playing Bone Thugs as we pull into the driveway
4. R&B and Neo-soul: I’m glad I’m not the only one whose up on Duffy.
7. Swagger: It seems like YTs want all the fun of being black without having to deal with the releated hardships. ie the “Compton Cookout” a bunch of white students from UC San Diego dressed how they think people from Compton do and had a party were they ran around wearing do-rags gold teeth and bad weaves “in honor of black history month” don’t believe me? check it out.
http://www.ktla.com/news/landing/ktla-compton-cookout,0,2673438.story
I would definitely agree black people don’t have a monopoly on dancing like black people anymore,some white people I see when im outs’ dancing skillz simultaneously shock,delight and disturb me, bwahaha
One thing an individual black person has lost(my sister),is the right to say at every film that has a black man as the american president, ‘Hollywood ALWAYS makes the president black because it’ll never happen in real life!’
Morgan Freeman, after many years of faithful fictional service as the president,well aside from Mandela,he can’t HELP himself!,can finally retire from fictional office.
Man…I don’t see the big deal.
It’s just a step competition.
Seems unimportant to me.
As for the rest:
1. Spades : I’m in the military…everybody plays cards. Spades is just another game to play.
2. HBCU’s turning into OINHBCU (Only in Name HBCU): I disapprove of the HBCU concept particularly based on their attendance numbers, graduation rates, and my general confusion on their purpose. Outside of the top ones do they really matter more than any other low-tier school? Mind you I’m likely biased because I’m from Columbia, South Carolina where Allen and Benedict are down the street from the University of South Carolina. There is a WORLD of difference between them…and Allen can’t even keep it’s accreditation.
3. The Hood: Umm…Hoods are bad. Why would we want to keep those? Can I get a 24hour sushi spot?
4. R&B and Neo-soul: Music is music…look at the writers and producers behind all sorts of talent.
5. Tyler Perry movies: Am I wrong to admit I DESPISE Tyler Perry movies, plays, television shows, and whatnot. I saw a play in South Carolina when I 8…”I Can Bad By Myself.” It pretty much solidified my dislike. The first and last time my Mother ever went to anything like that too…it was a general fail for both of us. The message was so…
6. Hip-hop: Have you listened to the radio lately? What is a Wacka Flocka…and also…hip-hop…I’m thinking Def Jam…and thus thinking Rick Rubin
7. Swagger: thought we banned this word…it’s just a cute colloquialism for self-confidence
8. The myth: No comment
@Siobhan, Its all in a playful banner with a seemingly truthful undertone. (Think: Dave Chappelle and his racial skits. They are humorous, mildly offensive, yet, have some truth) I, too, am from Columbia, SC, and I know that Allen/Benedict are not under the same standards or leadership that it was 30 years ago. However, I did attend the best HBCU, FAMU, (sorry I had to promote my school) and can attest to some truth in an HBCU not being an HBCU anymore.
I notice you’re in the military. I’m not judging, but I do notice that in my dealings with men in the military, they have the psuedo-simibrainwashed concept of the world being rainbows and flowers and think that race doesnt matter. I get that when you are at war overseas, the enemy sees “american” not color, however, I feel like the military doesnt paint an accurate depiction of race relations and issues in America, especially with men. I’ve had some military men give me the most illogical excuses on race topics. However, these are based on my experiences.
…but if black people try to take over a white dominated industry, we end up getting separate quarters.
Example: Vogue Italia. They said that Black models should be recognized, and because of this, they created Vogue Black (http://www.vogue.it/en/vogue-black).
I’m going to stop right here before I go on a soapbox tirade like I so very want to right now.
@chaoticdiva,
What in the H E double hockey sticks?
Now that is a just a hot mess. Though I loved the Grace Jones video

If you saw the other sorortities compared to “Zeta Tau Alpha,” you would see that ZTA is garbage. How creative is the Matrix? I think their performance was a little whack and DEFINATELY not the best.
Alpha Kappa Alpha did a wonderful job, and so did many others. I believe that AKA was rightfully given first place. And I’m not just saying that because I’m a member (who happens to be from Arkansas).
