Bad-Ass, Kick-Ass Black Female Lawyers Are Running 2015

Three thoughts going through my head while watching and reading about Maryland State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby’s press conference this morning:

1. Add me to the line of cynics genuinely surprised that the entire book seems to be getting thrown at these officers. Not only was one of them charged with murder — which, while (somewhat) vindicating, still stings to see — they were also charged with false imprisonment…which stings even more. Basically, they grabbed Freddie Gray off the street — kidnapped him, basically — and murdered him…for no reason. And this wasn’t a quick or “clean” death. His spine was severed, and he spent seven days incapacitated before finally dying.

Although it’s been said already, I’m going to say it again. Fuck these motherfuckers.

2. Marilyn Mosby is a very attractive woman. Watching this almost feels like watching an actress play a lawyer instead of an actual lawyer. This could have been a scene from Suits.

3. Is anyone having a better 2015 than the kick-ass Black female lawyer? It’s already been confirmed that Michele Roberts is bringing the fire next time to the NBA.  And between her, our new attorney general, Mosby, and Kamala Harris (and others I’m sure I’m forgetting to mention), there are a bunch of high-profile kick-ass Black female lawyers who happen to be doing some high-profile kick-ass shit right now, and I’m here for it. Because where the hell else would you rather be when a bunch of bad Black lawyer chicks announce “I’m here to chew bubblegum and kick ass…and I’m all out of bubble gum” than wherever the hell they happened to be?

I’d like to think that the outrage and subsequent protests played a part in these charges being brought so quickly. Also, I’m reserving my jubilation until we see some actual serious, hard convictions handed down.

    • menajeanmaehightower

This. I’m happy but we still have another big hurdle to get over which is having these officers convicted.

    • *Sidenote*

Am I wrong when I say that the whole “Freddy Gray severed his own spine” meme is the most a**hatted police excuse ever?

      • KB

No sir you are not. I can’t believe they even let that statement come out of their mouths.

        • TeeChantel

Yes. The “pre-existing medical condition” statement was another.

      • menajeanmaehightower

        Like how?!

        • Like it was a far-flung c.y.a attempt by the cops that is too ridiculous to believe if you’re tethered to reality.

          • Val

IKR, basically they were saying he kicked his own azz. Yeah, right. I mean did anyone other than the idiots at the Washington Post believe that nonsense?

            • As a matter of fact wasn’t that how the South Africans said Steve Biko died in Cry Freedom or am imagining it?

              • Val

Just looked it up. The S.A. police tortured Steven Biko and then when he died they said he died becasue of a hunger strike.

                • I knew they tried to pass his murder off as some bull. I do remember one of those films when the prisoner was said to have died trying to throw himself out of a window…which had a large metal grate over it.

                  • Val

I’m sure police everywhere have used different variations of this same lie.

            • mochazina

duh! he went all bruce nolan on himself! smh it can happen, i saw it in a movie!

      • Sigma_Since 93

As a**hatted as the indentation in his head matching a bolt in the van.

      • miss t-lee

About as believable as these handcuffed suspects that decide to shoot themselves in the back of the patrol cars.

    • Epsilonicus

This is a victory, even if its small. Folks dont realize how rare this happens in Baltimore

      • Val

It’s not just rare in Baltimore, Eps. It’s rare everywhere in this country. I’m very pleased about the charges but I’m equally surprised. Especially with the quickness of the charges being levied. These charges are historic.

        • Epsilonicus

She throwing the book at them.

        • Sigma_Since 93

“I’m very pleased about the charge” I’ll be pleased if the White jury finds them guilty.

          • Val

Can’t get to the guilty verdicts without charges.

            • Sigma_Since 93

True but we’ve been here before so my standards are now higher.

              • Epsilonicus

We havent in Baltimore. Grandmas get beat up and there are no charges. This is big for us

        • uniquebeauty79

          EEEERRRRWHERE!!!!

  • Jocelyn

I have been doing the black lawyer chick dance at my desk since the press conference. I feel like I should call all the other black lawyer chicks in my city and plan a brunch with unlimited mimosas. Seriously, I am proud of Ms. Mosby and the fine job she’s doing so early in her new position. Even in 2015, there aren’t many of us so I’m going to pray and cheer for her through what is sure to be a bumpy ride.

    • Lisa Harris

Yeah, I feel like she’s kind of a superhero. She needs a cape. I might make her one.

      • Jocelyn

Please do. Make sure it’s fly.

  • Lisa Harris

I think the most important part of her statement is that the arrest was illegal. That’s big. The second most important thing is the “depraved heart murder” charge. The charges are stunning given the history of this PD and the way they have been allowed to abuse and kill without any accountability for so long. This is great. But I need convictions.

  • Lea Thrace

Didnt realize I was holding my metaphorical breath. Until I released the deepest of sighs when this press conference was over. I am so tired yall. So so tired.

  • CrankUpThe_AC

Dude, I feel like i’m in the twilight zone. This situation reminds me of a lot of other police injustices (you know which ones) but there is just something that feels different about this one. The aura just feels different. Stemming from the facts that:

1.Some of the officers who are being charged are also black and latino, which brings a whole other level of legitimacy to what communities of color are protesting. (“It’s not that you all are white, it’s that you all are f*cking us up.”)

2.The fact that members of the community were standing between violent protesters and the police.

    3. Rivals gangs coming together to make passionate, intelligent, and eloquent pleas for the community.

And now the swiftness of these charges have me anxious. Seeing these new narratives and fresh approaches are inspiring. Hopefully i’m not being swindled again.

…and yes Ms. Mosby is about to get some poster space in my room. Looking all kinds of bad. #yeslord

    • TeeChantel

      Mrs. Mosby :-)

      • CrankUpThe_AC

lol the good ones are always taken. (If you are reading this, respect, Mr. Mosby)

        • TeeChantel

lol same here. Cause Mr. Mosby is fine fine fine.

          • Epsilonicus

If Mr Mosby starts slipping lol

            • Sigma_Since 93

              You gonna be there like…………..

            • TeeChantel

Haha! Ya’ll are a mess. No plotting on married folks lol

              • Epsilonicus

We just stating facts. Thats all lol

              • Sigma_Since 93

@epsilonicus:disqus trying to introduce her to that swinger life….#marriedonmarried lol!!

            • miss t-lee

Look at this Bobby Womack type ish…

          • yes he is!

    • Sigma_Since 93

2.The fact that members of the community were standing between violent protesters and the police.

I can understand why one would. Look you can protest but don’t tear up our / my stuff in the process mayne.

  • TeeChantel

But, God. Charges are one thing. Convictions are another. I certainly hope they bring justice back to this city. OAN, Mrs. Mosby is an attractive woman. Mr. Mosby is an incredibly attractive man. Definitely a power couple.

  • Vivdarkbloom

Michelle Alexander, too, although she’s getting attention for her writing, not being a practicing attorney.

  • Freebird

I’m glad sisters are doing it big….great story. I’ll wait for the conviction.

  • uniquebeauty79

We NEED convictions to come from this. It is time that something happens to make them know they DO stand to lose something by doing this Robo-Renegade cop mess. If no convictions arise at all, we will be saying RIP to some random black man in another week.

  • Val

And, both Marilyn Mosby and Kamala Harris are HBCU grads!
