As A Dad, Queen Sugar Hit Me Right In The Feels

I love Queen Sugar. Let’s start there. I’d take Queen Sugar on a $200 date, juju on the beat with it, and cook greens, beans, tomatoes and potatoes just so it would have something to take home in case it got hungry.

For those who aren’t familiar, the Ava DuVernay-helmed show is the story of a Louisiana agricultural family—the Bordelons—dealing with the fallout after the death of the family patriarch, and it’s one we haven’t seen on television yet. At all. But Nova, Charley and Ralph Angel are all family to me.

The writing is good. The acting is good. The directing is awesome sauce. And on occasion, the show hits you right in the feels.

For instance? For instance.

[Editor’s note: Spoiler alert if you haven’t seen the Nov. 9 episode.]

Full disclosure, since I became a father in 2009, nearly all depictions that are father-related—especially those where you see a dad trying his best—get me. I’m talking, my whole atmosphere is an allergen at times. I watch movies differently since I’ve become a dad. I see commercials differently. When I’m out and I see a little girl holding her dad’s hand, I unintentionally smile as she looks at him like a hero. She has no idea what struggles he’s facing; she just knows that dad is a hero.

Stuff like that gets me. All. The. Time. My thug has been disposed of and replaced with a heart. I think kids do expose you to a different side of who you are—the better side. Even the roughest dude usually has a very, very soft spot for his children. I’m no different.

Ralph Angel (played by Kofi Siriboe) is the father of a little boy named Blue (Ethan Hutchinson). Since getting out of jail, Ralph Angel, for all his faults, has made sure to make his son the center of his universe. He provides for him the best he can and does all for him, including some temporary lapses in judgment. Thank God for Aunt Vi (Tina Lifford). Ralph Angel has pent-up anger at Blue’s mother for being unable to care for her own son while he was down because she chose drugs over her child, and now even she is trying.

Point is, Ralph Angel is a father who wants nothing more than to be a great father to his son. There’s just one problem: When he went to jail, guardianship of his son went to his aunt, Vi, who is not ready to give Ralph Angel that responsibility back. Ralph Angel has both implicitly and directly asked Aunt Vi to allow him to regain his legal guardianship of his son. It’s a running theme through the show, but it hit home especially hard in episode 10.

Blue’s class is preparing to take a trip to the zoo. Ralph Angel signs a permission slip so that he can go. The next day, the teacher asks Ralph Angel to stop by so that she can talk to him.

You probably see where this is going.

She informs Ralph Angel that because he is not Blue’s legal guardian, the school needs Aunt Vi to sign the slip. Ralph Angel retorts that he is Blue’s father; but legally, that’s irrelevant.

Bruh.

All the allergies.

I don’t even have that problem in life, but again, seeing this dad, who is trying, realize that he can’t even grant permission for his son to go to the zoo hit me where it hurts. I felt for him. I wanted to hug him.

In this same episode, Aunt Vi points out to Charley (Dawn-Lyen Gardner) that her soon-to-be ex-husband has a right to know what’s going on in his son’s life despite how horrible a person he is because everybody deserves a second chance. This resonates with Ralph Angel because despite the best efforts of mice and men, Aunt Vi doesn’t think that he, who is actively working and providing for Blue, is ready to be the guardian of his own son.

This sets up a scene where Ralph Angel asks Vi to sign the permission slip, which she gladly does, remarking how much Blue loves animals. Ralph Angel almost walks away but decides that he needs to let Aunt Vi know how it feels; that even though he’s not in jail and has paid his debt to society, he’s still not free. He does everything he is supposed to do but doesn’t have the right to do something as simple as allow his son to go on a class trip to the zoo; a decision so small looms so large over his heart and mind.

All he wants is to be a parent. And with tears in his eyes, he’s begging for his second chance, some mercy and a signature on a piece of paper that holds so much weight over his life. He pleads his case, and Aunt Vi balks initially, largely because she can’t stand Blue’s mama, who has come back into the picture, but she is also going through growth and realization in her life and realizes that it’s time to let the reins go, while still offering to be a source of help and support, because it’s OK to ask for help if you need it.

Their powerful embrace almost did me in. It wasn’t a hug of thanks, but of relief. It was Aunt Vi seeing him not for his mistakes but for who he is trying his best to be and what he wants to be for his son.

That entire scene illustrated why I love this show so much. It was real. It was acted well, but the sentiment was real. The struggle was present and not unfamiliar to many of us in our community. Something as small as a trip to the zoo emotionally triggered the struggle this man faces daily in attempts to get out from under the thumb of the system.

Scenes like that, with the smallest attention to detail, are why Queen Sugar is such a good show. The writing and directing are phenomenal, the cinematography is awesome. And the cast pulls it off. This particular struggle is Ralph Angel’s, but Nova (Rutina Wesley) and Charley are fighting battles and facing demons all the same while the family tries to keep up the good fight. Queen Sugar tells a million stories, and one of them is probably yours.

If you’re not watching Queen Sugar, you should be. If you are watching Queen Sugar, I’m right there with you.

Panama Jackson

Panama Jackson is pretty fly (and gorgeous) for a light guy. He used to ship his frito to Tito in the District, but shipping prices increased so he moved there to save money. He refuses to eat cocaine chicken. When he's not saving humanity with his words or making music with his mouth, you can find him at your mama's mama's house drinking her fine liquors. Most importantly, he believes the children are our future. You can hit him on his hitter at panamadjackson@gmail.com.

  • Darla got some John’s ball sweat on the baby. I stand with Aunt Vi.

    • Deeds

I agree, she should’ve had him go a year without getting into any potential legal trouble before signing him over to him.

  • Les Vegas

That scene had my allergies acting up too. Dang flu and cold season.

  • Kelly Kell

I’ve been waaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiting for VSB to talk about this show. So good. Better than the book even. So many stories that resonate and give you the feels. Darla’s amends to Aunt Vi and Hollywood, literally had me in tears. My heart always hurts for Ralph Angel (and Kofi Siriboe is so damn fine). Last week’s slavery reveal was TV gold to me. Queen Sugar is my favorite new show of this television season, hands down. And just another example of how exciting TV is right now for black characters with compelling story lines and dimension like we haven’t seen before.

    • Geechi_Luciano

that scene with Darla has me in full blown tears. It was gripping.

      • NomadaNare

Bruh my eyes were burning trying not to let a single tear go

The poise of Darla in that scene was everything

        • Geechi_Luciano

I’ve only known Bianca for her roles when she plays a teenager, but that scene man, she showed us something. She dug deep for that one.

Couldn’t agree with you more. The slavery reveal in last week’s episode was one of the most powerful moments I’ve ever experienced watching a TV show.

    • Young Olu

Yeah last week’s slavery reveal was very enlightening. My in-laws are originally from Alabama and have over 400 acres. This episode made me ask just exactly how they cam about the land so Wifey started calling Aunties. They pretty much revealed that the land was purchased in a similar manner but by an uncle who was mixed and super light skinned. This was a game changer for them because back then, only white people could purchase land and this uncle was the cheat code!

  • Detroit Skater

listen! this show has me wanting cable. i binged on a recent trip and came home actually wanting cable. until i decide to get it i watch on sunday’s at my brother’s, but this one particular show has me wanting cable when before i could have cared less. everything about this show is great to me.

    • Get you a fire stick or zoomtak android TV box.

      • Detroit Skater

i should have also said i don’t have internet either…lololol.. my brother told me to look into fire stick. i have been in no rush b/c cheap, but will loosen the bank belt for this show.

        • Get you a homie with a fire stick and download the episodes to your phone.

          • Detroit Skater

Technology is not my thang, BUT thank you sir! had no clue….for real? #DontJudgeMeEducateMe

  • redstickbe.spoke

while i like that positive black tv is back it seems…this shows acting just bothers me…the acting is just bad…almost unbearably bad…to the point where i havent watched it in over a month…maybe these last few shows are better…i’ll give it another shot

    • Yeah…idk where Panama seeing good acting, Rutina overemotes every scene and Ralph Angel whispers when he loses the accent

      • BlackExcellence

Ralph Angel isn’t the best actor but he’s nice to look at and he’s really good in his scenes with Blue.

        • Blue is the better actor.

          • TeeChantel

            Dead.

        • Scorpiogoddess??

You talking bout that blue black hansooooome piece of double dipped chocolatte?!?

      • Scorpiogoddess??

        Lol.

      • TeeChantel

Tris, we not gonna let you talk about Ralphangel now.

        • I’m all for team darkskinned prospering but you know damn well that boy can’t act

          • TeeChantel

I think he’s good, but I am a bit biased. Give him time. He is only 22/23 so he has time to perfect his craft.

      • Negro Libre

Is the acting worst than Haves and Have Nots?

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7mOFoib7AA

(So much drama, so little execution lol. They playing music like Rocky is about to train to fight Drago, but all they doing is exchanging threatening facial expressions)

        • I draw the line at Queen Sugar…I be seeing the ads for these other shows like, nah B

        • TeeChantel

Same with If Loving You is Wrong…

        • Treat the scenes with Tika Sumpter the way I treat Janelle Monet videos- just hit the mute button.

      • thought it was just me tired of her clenching her jaw and trembling just to say “good morning”

        • And she gives really strong hugs

      • MsCee

That fake country accent kills me softly each and every week…but come on, there is some pretty good acting going on.

    • Negro Libre

      That’s probably why it’s a success.

    • Y’all tripping. The acting is great. Southern people just awkward. *deletes account*

    • TeeChantel

I agree, the first couple of episodes were kind of boring, but it has gotten better. You should give it another shot.

  • BlackExcellence

This show is appointment TV. Totally worth upgrading my mama’s cable subscription.

  • ChokeOnThisTea

Speaking of “queens,” can we finally drop that stunt queen Koonye Trump Kardashian once and for all? https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/c3dc94297559d0be2925dc06d88e1058c387cc2030b9badf2cc33a4690d9d1b5.jpg

    • “Queens”, tho.

      • PinkRose

Don’t forget he married a buck naked type woman too!

        • He calls the system rigged when he doesn’t get his way

        • Scorpiogoddess??

Bye Pink! How you gon call her a hooe.

          • PinkRose

I didn’t call her a ho and I actually don’t think she is. It’s just SUPER old seeing her a$$ all over the place, ALL THE TIME!!

            • Scorpiogoddess??

              I know. I did.

              • PinkRose

                We’ll d@mn, lol!!

                • Scorpiogoddess??

                  eh.

      • Scorpiogoddess??

You win. You won. Continue winning.

      • Basically.

        Wait I’m a Gemini….*

I find this interesting although I think Astrology is pure hokum.

      • ChokeOnThisTea

EXACTLY!!! Don’t forget “with a ho(llow shell) for a wife.” All of these explain why he supports Trump. Because he sees himself in Trump. So in his warped mind, if Trump can win, so can he. I’ve got news for that n—-a though.

    • Negro Libre
      • ChokeOnThisTea

You think so? I definitely think his problem is white, but it ain’t drugs.

        • It’s the fame. Kim is a symptom, not the problem.

          • ChokeOnThisTea

Oh, absolutely @ “Kim is a symptom, not the problem.” She’s a symptom that exacerbates the real problem– Kanye’s obsession with all things white. Don’t be fooled by the faux-pro black talk. All of it points back to one thing– his need to rub shoulders with white folk.

            • Kanye is in love with Kanye but he does associate success with Whiteness. But that is the same for 90% of rich niqqas I’ve ever heard of.

              • ChokeOnThisTea

Eh. No one can convince me Kanye loves Kanye. That’s low self-esteem falsely parading as ego. But eh. Whatever.

        • Negro Libre

          Maybe…

        • BlackExcellence

I read a theory that he has a mental illness and his mama kept him in check. The stress of losing his mother and maybe going off meds/whatever may be to blame.

          • Can I say I’m tired of this excuse? Donda been gone almost a decade, we’ve seen this Kanye longer than we have the old one…maybe this is just who he is

            • ChokeOnThisTea

Ha! You beat me to it. But yes, I agree. Except this Kanye existed even before Donda died.

            • PinkRose

And maybe some of y’all don’t know jack about how mental illness really works.

            • TheCollinB

You can never negate losing your mom as a life altering experience.

              • cakes_and_pies

I have a “friend” who lost her Mother a decade ago. She turned into a depressed b!+ch who won’t get help. She acts out all the time.

            • I keep telling folks Kanye is a bad wig and a dead white woman away from being Phil Spector.

            • blogdiz

Not buying the boy dun lost his minds since his Mama died but do think this is who he always was just that she kinna kept him in check

          • ChokeOnThisTea

Can I be honest? That “mama” excuse holds no weight with me. This koontastic kneegrow has associated white with right long before Donda passed. I think by associating with certain folk, he’s just gotten bolder in admitting it.

            • Brooklyn_Bruin

But he said George Bush doesn’t care for black people? !!!?

He always wants attention, so unless it’s an album (which I’ll pirate anyway…) I don’t give him any

              • ChokeOnThisTea

Kanye only stood up for black folk when black men were involved. And can I be even more honest? He’s always been such a cornball to me. Even in that video. Once again, that was Kanye trying to be Billy Bada–. Trying to be on some wannabe controversial like Tupac and ODB mess when he’s really not about that life. Poor thing looked like he was about to pi ss his pants in that video.

I just hate how he always tries to be controversial for the sake of being controversial. Yet, he NEVER says anything of substance.

                • Brooklyn_Bruin

      Kanye been crazy

Talking about Black Skinhead when the fashion industry scoffs at his *designs* which are three thousand dollar threadbare tees but then wants us to *not focus* on racism when the rest of us hurt while his taxes get lowered

I am glad yall are finally catching up

      I miss the old Kanye.

      • Val

Yeah, ‘George Bush does not care about Black people’, Kanye.

        • NomadaNare

That ‘when he get on he leave your a.zz for a white woman’ Kanye

      • ChokeOnThisTea

I’m afraid this is the REAL Kanye.

      • Jetty

I miss the old Kanye, straight from the ‘Go Kanye
Chop up the soul Kanye, set on his goals Kanye
I hate the new Kanye, the bad mood Kanye
The always rude Kanye, spaz in the news Kanye
I miss the sweet Kanye, chop up the beats Kanye
I gotta to say, at that time I’d like to meet Kanye
See I invented Kanye, it wasn’t any Kanyes
And now I look and look around and there’s so many Kanyes
I used to love Kanye, I used to love Kanye
I even had the pink Polo, I thought I was Kanye
What if Kanye made a song, about Kanye?
Called “I Miss The Old Kanye,” man that’d be so Kanye
That’s all it was Kanye, we still love Kanye
And I love you like Kanye loves Kanye

He literally has always been a limitless creative. He was getting his craft out and being called weird for it since day one (soul samples under rap tunes wasn’t always the direct ticket to hits). He figured out how to box it and put a pretty pink bow (read:polo) on it so that he could have more appeal since people wouldn’t accept him wholly. He played the role so well that for a time even he believed it. So he only made moves that this imitation would have made.

Now he is laughing at how the song he made to explain everything will surely only be viewed by the masses as this new iteration of Kanye doing what you would expect that imitation of Kanye to do. In plain English, folks have been missing the core of the actual person for the roles we create around his current actions and image.

He has always been a creative man who identified differently from most on any variety of topics but needed ways to get the non geniuses to support.

Finally he loves that we all think that the outward was the point when it was really just the way the inner expressed its defiance and freedom just like a vain person behaves as if they love themselves fully when you know they simply love the way it looks!

There is no old and new Kanye its just how familiar you are with a free thinking ever evolving (note: sometimes what may be seen as regression is required for evolution) man who creates. We call him the name Kanye.

And internally he clearly has always sought to scale to the upper echelons of elite living and to have the power that often comes with it (that unfortunately reads as: white) the whole time.

  • These daddy lenses can take you there. Lord, don’t I know it. I can’t even watch adult films without thinking “That’s somebody’s baby.”

    • BlackExcellence

We didn’t need you depressing our “fun times”. -_-

      • Share my pain.

        • Nope. Get over it. I came to grips with the fact that my daughter is going to do the nasty with someone someday. Hopefully, they’re in elementary school right now, or junior high at most, because otherwise, I went wrong somewhere. Considering my rap sheet, what could I say that wouldn’t make me sound like a hypocrite?

          • You’re a real role model, Todd.

  • Scorpiogoddess??

So I guess insecure is not on this here radar. God.

    • BlackExcellence

Too cheap for HBO over here.

      • Scorpiogoddess??

There are ways to get around that.

        • BlackExcellence

My cousin won’t let me mooch off him anymore lol

            You need new cousins.

      • It’s free legally on HBONow, they really want fetch to happen.

    • I watched the pilot. I didn’t care.

      • Scorpiogoddess??

What do you care about?!? Let’s start there.

        • Issa? That you mama? I care about compelling characters, I can see the appeal of the show but I don’t really find them that endearing

          • Scorpiogoddess??

            Mschew. Issa, ke. Gotcha.

    • Brooklyn_Bruin

We talk about it in the comments a lot

      • Scorpiogoddess??

I mean an article post or whatever it is called.

    • I will say the bisecksual topic wouldve been interesting to see discussed on here

      • Brooklyn_Bruin

I said this over at Av Club, that entire story line was a bad idea. Shows their naivete as writers

      • Scorpiogoddess??

        Who bisecksual on that show?

        • I don’t watch but as I recall, the girl who isn’t Issa was seeing a guy who was with other men before and shenanigans ensue..I just seen facebook asking would they do it

          • Scorpiogoddess??

            Oooooh. Ya.

          • Men don’t even think about that question. Now, when your ex goes lesbian, time for some soul searching.

        • Brooklyn_Bruin

The one decent guy Molly met. They were talking craziest stories, and she says she had a girlfriend in college.

He then says I had an experience like yours.

          *pump brakes*

          Please clarify

He got a blowie from a dude back in the day, but then realized he wasn’t feeling it.

Well she can’t deal with it, even though she did far more than him.

The scene cuts to her blabbing his business to her girls at some party. Issa says it’s not a big deal, but some of the friends get a little extra.

She ends up breaking it off with him, and her narrative rolls on.

However you feel about her decision, to me bringing up a heavily charged issue with no clear resolution was a grave mistake.

The other problem with that episode was the imagined domestic violence.

Wilmore and Rae, imo, don’t have the chops to do nuance with some of the topics they broach.

Basically the problems I had with Awkward Black Girl are the same ones I’m having with Insecure.

*finally gets it of my chest*
          *breathes!

          • NomadaNare

I like how brash the show is but the characters are purposefully imperfect

How many sit down and think about the overarching ramifications of domestic violence from their current significant other after smashing their ex

            • Brooklyn_Bruin

Characters need to be imperfect because this story is about growth.

              But what is Molly’s arc?
              What is Issa’s?

              • NomadaNare

I dont know if Molly or Issa need well defined trajectories of *growth*

Real people dont have character arcs

They grow or they dont grow and even those periods of growth often come in painful fits and starts with long plateaus in between

Maybe this show is more slice of life

                • Brooklyn_Bruin

Real people do grow, but more importantly this is a tv show. And aside from the casting this is a conventional tv show. No invisible cars

Because it’s a tv show, a story, the narrative structure of a tv show forces growth. Episode to episode, characters solve problems. As they solve problems, their character learns, and the overarching plot moves forward.

This show is not breaking new conceptual ground.

The show is whether Issa will drop her guy, and will Molly find someone.

That’s really all you need to be frank.

But the added burden of being young, black, and female in this cultural atmosphere..means the writing has to be tight.

                  • NomadaNare

                    I think it is

Besides Issas show what other show makes a young black woman who is not a firm member of the upper/power class and doesnt have her ish all the way together the single protagonist

What other show features cross class relationships between women of color not based on competition or exploitation as a feature

I think oversimplifying it to what Molly and Issa do in their relationships is a disservice

I think with Issa the question is more will she understand the cause and deal with fallout of what is basically a quarter life crisis (this in itself a relatively new phenomenon created by and for millenials) or will she continue in her current mode of living with new found guilt and a refined sense of appreciation

For Molly its really a question of whether she will overcome the insecurities in herself to get what she wants whether that be a man or just a sense of self satisfaction independent of her relationships or not

Both of those question involve men or relationships with men peripherally ie they are more symptoms of insecurity than the true problem (hence the name of the show) and neither really require a character arc as both characters could learn nothing from their experiences (like real people)

With regards to the writing are you concerned other shows in this vein might be hampered by Issas missteps

          • Deeds

What did they need to discuss about imagined domestic violence? That was just her imagination. I know a lot of times, people imagine the worst, that was just what she imagined.

            • Brooklyn_Bruin

Why show that image in the first place, especially when Lawrence is a good dude?

I don’t think they/folks in general realize that black imagery on the screen is not a game?

But to go further with that message, the reason she didn’t tell her boyfriend about her infidelity is that she’s in fear for her physical safety?

That was where Issa’s mind jumped to? Have we seen Ol boy get violent before?

              Hmm, tell me more.

One could defend the show for some of these blunders,

But as a writer,I think to myself, is this helping me in anyway tell the story.

The team keeps writing themselves into these corners – but either they don’t see it, or they do and don’t care

On some ol, “Sorry that you feel that way” type steez.

              • Deeds

I see what you’re saying about black imagery. But usually when I’ve watched any television show and a character has to deliver bad news and they imagine what the reaction will be its usually something extreme. I just saw her picturing a reaction that is so out of his character for her to imagine.

          • Scorpiogoddess??

But was her narrative supposed to stop because dude was biseksual? Perhaps, the writers didn’t feel a need of furthe rexploring THAT ‘issue’, because it really IS a non-issue. It is what it is. He had an encounter, Molly felt some type of way about it and was no longer interested. I don’t want to speak for them. But I don’t see the need of it being dissected. Because, preference.

In regards to nuance….you think they should bring new writers on board to deal with that?

So how did you survive THAT long without breathing boo?!?? Shiiiiiid. You should have said from jump, the writing ain’t shiiid. lol, or not lol.

    • PinkRose

I’m VERY “throwed off” by the title, not even a hint of curiosity.

      • Scorpiogoddess??

Lord. To be honest I’m really really really watching it because of her boyfriend he a fine piece of chocolate that unfortunately ain’t checking for chocolate, but I digress.

        • Deeds

Awww..who’s he checking for in real life.

          • Scorpiogoddess??

I like Insecure. It’s gotten better. It started out a bit slow to me. Damon and I both definitely watch it. We even text about it while it’s on. We’re pretty much bro-texters.

      • Scorpiogoddess??

Can you guys bro text your texts into a post?

  • Sigma_Since 93

I’m Sigma_Since93 and I approve of this entire post. That episode had me all Kim K ugly cryface.
