A Response to An Open Letter To Yours Truly

A man. A plan. A canal. Panama.

One of the best parts about this whole blogging experience is the interactions it creates. You get to meet new people and exchange ideas with people you’ll likely never ever see in person. The hope is that you matter enough that when it’s all said and done people remember you, and the hope is that the memories aren’t negative.

Well, in similar fashion, one of my favorite parts of blogging is the feedback. And the criticism, and perhaps masochistically when people come at me sideways. I’m like a battle rapper in that regard. All beef is worthy of being taken on. So is all criticism if its sincere. And to be completely frank, all writers, artists, what have you need honest criticism and feedback in order to grow and mature as a craftsperson and as a human being. So when I received an email yesterday from Tina Watkins, letting me know that while she’s a longtime fan and reader of VSB, her readership has waned because most of our posts are ridiculous and that my post on the teacher breastfeeding in class and the comments that followed disturbed her. It was with that in mind that she felt compelled to pen “An Open Letter Encouraging Very Smart Brotha Writer Panama Jackson.”

Now, I’m not about to encourage everybody with a grievance to write open letters to VSB – heavens no – but if you do, and especially if you call me out specifically, know that I will respond. And I don’t mean that in an aggressive, antagonistic way, but in a “I respect you enough to hear you out and engage.”

So with that being said, Ms. Watkins brings up some interesting points and I’m going to discuss what I got out of her letter.

PS. Can we keep things civil around here today. I don’t want anybody reading her letter and disagreeing with any of it and taking aim at her. She’s a VSB contributor folks, let’s all play nice. It’s Friday.

Moving on.

What I got out of her letter was this: “with great power, comes great responsibility”. And when it comes to issues dealing with women, that taking some of the stances or presenting issues the “man” way that may or may not exhibit any real empathy or attempts to understand is not only counterproductive, but maybe even doing a disservice to the growth I purport to be seeking out. Oh, and I have a daughter now so I should think of how my daughter would be affected by the way I think, etc.

That’s what I took from her letter. And my guess is that’s something that’s been said to and about a vast number of people who venture here on the daily.

Quickly, much like I’m the kind of guy who always has nicknames, I must also be the kind of cat prone to receiving letters questioning if I was wasting my gifts. I can remember at least two other instances where I received either handwritten or typed letters indicating that the writer felt like I had all the fits in the world but were squandering them by not using them for greater change, etc. One even told me that I should be using my talents for God and and that I was using the vast talents I had for the devil’s work. That might have been the most backhanded compliment I ever received, by the way.

Moving on. I’ve always had a problem with the “with great power comes great responsibility” tagline when it comes to bloggers. Why? Glad you asked. See, while I understand it in theory, in practice it more or less implies that at some point, should you reach a point where you could be considered influential, you have to shift from what makes you happy to what does the most good. While that may sound selfish, the fact is, what usually brings people to you in the first place as a writer is your sincerity and honesty which is largely personal. And you’re ability to connect to people however it may be which is again, usually largely personal. Plus, we tend to pick and choose who we think should be responsible for social change. Diddy has way more influence than I’d ever have but there’s no movement to get him to change the world. And maybe that’s because he told people to vote. Me no know. Maybe it’s because nobody really respects his mind but his business acumen.

Me no know, but the point is if you gained power by being true to yourself, should you alter that version of yourself to hopefully “move” the most amount of people? I don’t know how I feel about that. Now that isn’t to say that you can’t or shouldn’t grow. In fact, if you’re not growing in this business then you’re not only going to lose your fans but you definitely are wasting time. However, how that growth materializes is a very personal thing.

I wrote that post two weeks ago about losing my edge because that’s how I feel. It was honest. But it wasn’t to change anybody’s life. It was because that’s what I felt like writing. That’s how Champ and I have treated VSB. Sure there are times when you feel an obligation to speak on something happening in the social consciousness. That’s part of the gig. People want and need to talk about certain things so you do that. And hell, since we’re a people too we also feel that need. But I know that very little of my writing has an agenda. Hell, that’s probably part of the popularity, there isn’t one…though we’ve been accused of being Kanye d*ckriders on more than one occasion. But largely, I don’t have an opinion on anything until I realize I have one. Which is why me writing about women’s issues would be largely disingenuous.

For the most part, my observations about womanhood are reserved to the differences between the sexes. Of course, on occasion I’ll weigh in on a topic that either matters to me because its been introduced into my world via my child or something. And it’s not because I’m afraid of those issues, its just that I’m not a woman. I don’t even realize half of those issues are issues. Does that make me oblivious…perhaps. I will say that there are some realizations that I’ve made though as of late about being a woman that I intend to broach here. But I also won’t feel guilty if I don’t, nor will I feel like I’m doing myself or our audience a disservice.

Also, I’m not even sure how Wednesday’s post could be considered incendiary. Sure, I focused on the breastfeeding and that was likely only a secondary issue but let’s be real, that’s what the majority of the discussion centered around. I’m not sure if I’m trending towards the mean there or if the mean is just mindless men who don’t realize that boobs are for feeding. Point is, while it’s a shame that we live in an oversexualized, yet taboo-centric nation when it comes to the female form, the fact is we do live there and boobs are boobs. Sure women don’t see the big deal, but that doesn’t make them not a big deal. It’s a larger problem…agreed…but I’m not sure that I feel any obligation to attempt to undo that pathology. Maybe that’s a problem. Maybe it’s not. I don’t know.

Perhaps this is all a copout because I have never had any designs on being an influencer or somebody who would change the world. For the most part I feel like my obligation is to my family and to ensuring that I don’t bring shame to them. Everything else is fair play. I’ve shifted some of my thinking towards creating a legacy that my daughter can be proud of. At this point, between everything I’ve written, all the music I’ve created, and all of the videos floating of me out there, I can make sure that my daughter never has to wonder who her father was should something happen to me. That is honestly one thing that does motivate me. The ability to stay alive through my words for her. While she may not like everything that she reads, she won’t ever think of her father in a negative fashion, I hope. Or at least not permanently.

But does creating a forum with a large following make one a de facto leader? Eh, I’m not sure. A facilitator maybe. But leader? Now, in life, I’d probably be considered a leader but that’s because I can only follow for so long, plus, I’m arrogant enough to think that in most forums I’m as good if not better than everybody else at what we’re doing. Let’s be real, I blog at a place called Very Smart Brothas…arrogance came with the price of admission. However, I don’t know that I ever wanted to use this forum to “effect change” so much as provide a place to think out loud. However, should I ever decide to take on an issue or attempt to change perceptions and bridge any gaps, I’d definitely feel comfortable enough to do it, but it would also be because at that time, it’s just what I felt in my soul.

Which brings us full circle. I get where Ms. Watkins is coming from, assuming I’m interpreting her letter properly, and she’s fair to make that critique and offer her encouragement. It’s all in play and all in bounds. I’ll even take it under advisement. But I also don’t know that I truly feel compelled to become an “issue” blogger just because I have the platform to do so. But who knows, maybe I’ll feel that way at some point. Perhaps a particular issue will compel me to dive headfirst into something and attempt to save some souls or something. Maybe not. But I get my any means on whenever there’s a drought…get your umbrellas out because that’s when I brainstorm.

So I guess we’ll see.

“Now before I finish, let me just say
I did not come here to show out, did not come here to impress you
Because to tell you the truth when I leave here I’m GONE!
And I don’t care WHAT you think about me – but just remember,
when it hits the fan brother, whether it’s next year, ten years,
twenty years from now, you’ll never be able to say
that these brothers lied to you JACK!”

Panama Jackson is pretty fly for a light guy. He used to ship his frito to Tito in the District, but shipping prices increased so he moved there to save money. When he's not saving humanity with his words or making music with his mouth, you can find him at your mama's mama's house drinking her fine liquors. Most importantly, he believes the children are our future.

Only ignorant people can’t understand the awesomeness of what Eazy just said. Break it down.

F – Is the 6th letter of the alphabet. June is the 6th month. So “F” stands for June.

I – Is the 9th letter. This stands for the 9th gift you get in the “12 Days of Christmas” song. Which are 9 Ladies Dancing.

R – Is the 18th letter. This stands for the age for each of the 9 ladies. This lets us know that if any sexual conduct were to happen, it’s not statutory.

S – Is the 19th letter. “Juice” is the 19th film Samuel Jackson has made. Juice, or “juicing” was children’s jargon for having coitus.

T – Is the 20th letter. Mississippi was the 20th state to join the USA. Notice how Mississippi has some letters repeated or “copied” multiple times. Meaning that all of the women involved were either twins or triplets.

Eazy is saying, that in June, he danced with 9 women, all of whom are 18 years old and are some sort of twin/triplet, and then afterwards, had coitus with them.

See? Now, apologize to this man.

      • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5FR1LGsT7E TheAnti-Cool

        F – stands for Fck
        U- stands for You

Now apologize to us since we made this comment that contributed nothing to the discussion more than it ever planned to be.

        • That Ugly Kid

No. I just showed you how it contributed to the discussion. He’s talking about an encounter he had with 9 women. And he did it as a sign of rebellion. COULD he have written about something with a “purpose”? Yes. But he decided to tell us a story about him getting laid. Basically telling Panama to “write whatever the f*ck you want to write about, homie.”

    • Double_Dizze

You’ve got my co-sign on that one, even though you may not care. That phenomenon of which you speak isn’t just here on this blog, or even confined to the virtual world of the internets (thank Dubya for that word). Since this topic is woman-centric, I’ll just address it as it relates to women…if you’re not with their opinion, you’re against them as a whole. It’s a strange thing, almost like a halfway polite version of ‘Get down or lay down.’

because women are the ONLY ones that write from a bitter/angry/argumentative/confrontational perspective? eaux.

Let me say this once and for all, since you like to make this claim on just about every VSB post you comment on (where appropriate to the post or not). A LOT of the women that comment here do not subscribe to what you say. You have a narrow view of some specific commenters. I’ve respectfully disagreed with many men just as many times as I’ve given them daps. Most of the regular/veteran female commenters are the same. You seem to think that disagreeing with a man’s comments = women being bitter losers. it’s the same as calling people haters just for having a dissenting opinion, and it’s old and tired.

If PJ was a different kind of dude/writer – this post could have been a complete and utter ETHER of this woman. he chose to RESPECTFULLY disagree with her opinion that she has EVERY RIGHT to present. there are ALOT of commenters (again both male and female) that could take a lesson from this post. (but won’t).

Let’s also be clear, not everyone comments for the same reason. Some DO come out and drop comment bombs just for the sake of watching the after-math ensue. This is equal opportunity (both men and women) do this. It’s human nature to react and want to defend. Some do this better than others.

Lemme go fold some laundry or something….peace out.

@KB- I did say “men”. I wasn’t just talking about comments that I make but any man that doesn’t subscribe to the type of feminism that SOME women on VSB try to shout us down or shame us with. What’s funny to me about the “bitter” comment that I’ve been using lately is that, I started using it because I read so many women calling men (other men, not even me) on VSB for not agreeing with them or having their point of view. Don’t agree- Call him bitter. Have a different point of view- Call him bitter. Don’t like his truthfulness, whether about himself or his own situation- Call him bitter. I started doing it as an homage to those women who love to call someone bitter but hate being called bitter themselves.

Careful BH. You don’t wanna go p!ssing off the womenfolk around here. Word gets out about your “abrasiveness” and women everywhere will flee. Then you’d be getting as much action as the “Archives” section of verysmartbrothas.com.

      • Marshal

I’ve noticed that many people on both- read BOTH- genders, aka the Usual Suspects don’t read the entire post and only look for buzzwords and sentences and just go off from there. This will Always Happen and the usual Suspects will keep having their Jerry Springer moments in these comment threads. I give props to Both- read BOTH- the guys and ladies that have Good Points, and I call BS towards them as well. Unfortunately, Buzzwords and Dog-Whistles seem to wine out over Differing Opinions and Healthy Debate…..

        • bhillboy

You know Marshal- I really do try to debate peacefully but I get a lot of below the belt comments from some people. Below the belt type of sh!t that I’m not good at letting slide in my real life let alone online. Maybe they don’t think they’re being “funky” but they are a lot of times. I get personal attacks when I’m making a general statement that usually doesn’t include my personal life. Then the same people who through a bomb at me will get all *butthurt* when I send a shot back. That’s life and I understand that. One consolation that I have is that I have TON of platonic female friends and they know how I feel about male/female situations and they are friends with me regardless and they tell me they agree with me in private settings. C’est la vie.

@PA—–Exactly. I’m not the only one who feels like this but I’m one of the very few who will express it. Now, if some of you other men on here spoke up and called out the hypocrites, you wouldn’t need to read my rants because, in actuality, I’m sticking up for you. Maybe you like that I’m the “whipping boy”. I went down thread and counted at least 5 other posters who basically have the same point of view that I have and aren’t afraid to say it. Go downthread and see the responses- non existent. I’m okay with being the whipping boy. I’m on VSB to expand minds and points of view not to have e-hookups or e-boos. I’m not on here seeking female approval. There are problems within the black male/female community that I think needsafixin and I’m here to help.

seriously dude…i honestly can say that i don’t get you. you cannot possibly be this oblivious where you think that your methodology actually is even presented to expand minds.

and no. you are not a whipping boy. you bring most of this shit on yourself, b. and you know it. there are no victims here. c’mon son.

you are intentionally antagonistic under this guise of just keeping it real and taking the L b/c nobody else will and it doesnt come across like that at all.

who do you actually think you’re sticking up for?

to be completely honest, i dont understand most of you niggas on here getting all butthurt about the plight of men being under attack or something.

how can you help fix the problems when you are actually one of them?

it seems like you take every possible opportunity to say that women are in here being all disagreeable and have formed some clique of EBBs hellbent on being contrarian to anything that doesn’t support a woman’s agenda.

but you do the same thing on the other side but then act like folks are just lobbing boulders at you and you’re just defending yourself and mankind or something.

c’mon doggy. i’m here every day. sure there are some chicks who go overboard. but man, why not just talk straight ot them or take that sh*t to email. passive aggressive shots for the sake of it is some real middle school sh*t. to be fair, you do that to anybody who dares to disagree with you anyway. youre the very stereotype you claim all women are: you can never be wrong.

i’ve seen that in the few times i’ve felt compelled to engage you. point is…life can’t possibly be that bad. yeah…stand up for men. yeah. rah rah.

but at least figure out who the real enemy is instead of making it everybody who disagrees with you which is the same thing you seem to be railing against.

(Online) People have a narrow idea of what growth is. Growth in the online world seems to be more about falling in line with the Black ‘progressive’ thought. Any unapproved utterance seems to open one up for attacks and Twitter declarations that they will never read your blog again.

I have always hated that “with great power comes great responsibility” line. Spiderman would give anything to not have to live a life that makes him happy. Dealing with great power has made him miserable and ruined every relationship he has had, including the one with himself. Spiderman’s greatest responsibility is to his own happiness. If he had looked out for his own happiness a little more, Gwen Stacy would probably still be alive.

    • https://twitter.com/#!/mackaroto Jay

Spiderman’s greatest responsibility is to his own happiness.

Ayn Rand presents “The Objectivist Spiderman”… I’d read that.

      • http://dashwilliams.me/ Dash

Adopting the identity of Spiderman was the most irresponsible thing Spiderman could do to his friends and family. Gwen Stacy, Harry Osburne, Aunt May, even Uncle Ben(who would probably be alive if Peter was at home and not out making money wrestling as Spiderman at the time of his death), and the faculty at Empire State University would have all been better off without Spiderman.

He caused those people untold amounts of pain by misinterpreting Uncle Ben’s words.

Great point. I forget the context but a few years ago there was a panel showing a few of the Avengers greatest hopes and Peter Parker’s was not to be Spider-Man. I don’t know why they’ve never done a story where he admits to being to having depression due to his sh***y life.

In House of M Peter was upset about being expected to fix things. He had everything he ever wanted when Magneto ruled the world, Gwen and a stable family life. He is haunted by the futility of his superhero career and the constant stream of Ls he and humanity take because it. Both The Dark Reign and The Siege of My Beloved Asgard can be traced to the failures of Spiderman.

Write what you want. If you’re going to specifically set scenarios up as discussion points than you have to be prepared to be vehemently wrong regardless of how silly or serious the subject matter is. +1 I don’t know why this is so hard to get. Everybody got an opinion. People disagree. People get mad, snarky, argue, call names, shame, insult. Whatevs. I’m gonna donate to the thicker skin fund. Some of you are living far below the epidermis poverty level. Who the f*ck cares if somebody doesn’t like your opinion and says so in whatever way they choose? Its only the internet. This is the place we say what we want.

If you say something provocative, be prepared to get a response. Don’t cry about it when you get it. You look like a punk. Don’t come back three days, weeks, months later talking about what somebody said. It’s over.

And people look really silly making subliminal comments like “I know some of you people are gonna say xyz” That is SO middle school. Passive aggressive. Weak, lame. Got sh*t to say? Keep it 100, say it. Be done with it. Deal with the people who don’t like it. Get the f*ck over it.

It’s great that you took the time to reply to her letter…it really is. However, I feel like she shouldn’t make such requests to you.

“When that’s used in a purposeful way, you can make a real difference. Why not be intentional about finding out the angle to your writing that uplifts women… In the interest of preserving mankind and stuff?”

The post about the woman taking her sick child to class was about just that. The breastfeeding aspect was secondary. Were you to spend 200 words praising motherhood while advocating nursing? Why is it your duty to single out a sex and “uplift” it …especially when a member of that sex is doing something wrong? I stand against treating my gender as 2nd class, but in no way do I feel we should be artificially praised. What purpose would that serve?

I’m not attacking her, but I feel you guys do a nice job of balancing substance with foolishness. While you do have a voice, you’re not a minister or a politician. You don’t OWE anyone anything.

Exactly! I’ve been reading VSB for a while now (lurked for like a year +) and I’ve grown to love the variety of content here. Panama, Champ, and Liz are friends *in my head* and I’d hate for them to get all hollywood on us now.

I’m on the Ms. Bridget train right now. The variety here is marvelous. Even if I don’t particularly enjoy the subject of the post, I read it anyway and I find myself learning new things.

Amen. I’m sitting here thinking that comments must have gone looney after I last looked. Someone previously mentioned a lot of commenters having an agenda…I think that Ms. Watkins may have had her own agenda in reference to her comment on yesterday’s post. She referened rape, pr0n, prostitutes, slavery, and a partridge in a pear tree. She also mentioned that she “spot-checked the comments” so maybe she took some things out of context.

      • DeeDee

I was confused as well. I thought the comments that day were fine! Some people will just never be happy man…

I agree with you. Even if you post and you are in the wrong… who cares?! We read your posts because we enjoy your voice, not because we look to you for guidance. We the readers are all adults and we know you’re human. Its like drinking with your boys. You don’t kick it because you think that they’re infallible geniuses. You do because you genuinely enjoy their company. Its pretty naive to expect you guys to be all things to all people… even with success. Plus, even when you’re wrong you handle it the right way. You take criticism like a Champ(no pun) which only does more to justify you doing you. Thats my take… KEEP DOING YOU.

That being said, I was hoping that one of the posts at the end of this week would be about what was going on in the Middle East right now.

    • Marshal

What is happening in the Middle East is the eptiome of why I No Longer wanted to be a Army Ranger nad why I’m Agnostic The filmaker and Pastor who reated and promoted that stupid Innocence of Mohammed movie pretty much pissed on the 1st Amendment, provoked all those countries to attack U.S. embassies in their countries, and pretty much inreased the Anti-American prsence acrosse the Atlantic. I feel ANY American that’s a tourist and/or don’t have dual citizenship in Yemen, Libya, Egypt, Iraq, etc are now targets, to be kidnapped, killed, and used in this endless Islam Extremist vs Evangelical-Christianity Extremist propoganda war. Also, the dumbass that is Israel’s Prime Miniter and his camp are trying to get us in a war with Iran because he can’t keep his ADD behind still and allow sanctions to set in; if Israel would STOP with their settlement-building and quit messing wit hthe Gaza Strip, MAYBE the Palestenians and everyone Not Israelis will lay off trying to wipe them off the map.

While this may sound harsh and somewhat Anti-Semetic, it truthfully isnt- They aren’t even the Real Jewish/Hebrew people anyways, just displaced mixture of Arabs and other Middle Eastern individuals granted land by NATO under the guise of being called Israel. While I can’t take the Bible seriously for my own reasons, people need to Really READ the Bible and learn the truth of who the Real Hebrews are- it ain’t the current State of Israel right now, that’s for sure

You said a hell of a lot right there Marshal and I can’t disagree with your analysis at all. I wish folks would look up what is anti-Semitic because it just so happens that Arabs are Semitic people. It really irks the shyt out of me when someone calls an Arab/Palestinian an anti-Semitic. The Jews of Israel are actually a majority Russian. Go figure. That’s about all I’m gonna add. :)

        • http://asiyah3.wordpress.com Asiyah

Agree with everything you said, Nilla, and it’s not because I’m Muslim. We all know Jews and Arabs are cousins, making Arabs Semitic peoples as well.

At least Panama, Champ, and Liz aren’t spreading propaganda or writing as a means to an end. You don’t always have to agree with them, and that’s the beauty of this blog and why I keep coming back. It’s transparent. There isn’t any brainwashing here.

          • nillalatte

I’d actually go a bit further than that Asiyah. “Jews” are not Semitic at all. While a majority believe they are a race of people, I disagree. Jew is a follower of the Jewish religion. Jews come from every nationality and ethnicity from across the world. Some were in my family tree as there is German-Jew ancestry according to my now deceased grandmother.

I saw an interview with Mike Wallace and Samuel L Jackson one day and SLJ said to Mike, “Well, you’re a white man…” and Wallace interjected, “I’m a Jew.” The look on SLJ’s face said it all. *WTF* He side stepped that comment, as well he should. SLJ is no dummy on that note.

Question: Has anyone ever filled out an employment application and declared their ethnicity for EEOC purposes? Of course you probably have. Is Jew anywhere on the EEOC self identification form? Why? It’s a religion.

            • http://asiyah3.wordpress.com Asiyah

DEFINITELY! I’ve had that debate before…only to be called “anti-semitic.” LOL. I’m like Judaism is the faith, not the race. I’ve grown tired of the back and forth and now I’m just like “sure you’re Jewish. sure, you are an Atheist. sure, you’re of Iraqi background…but you’re Jewish.” LMAO.

              • nillalatte

Definitely Arab Jews. It’s from people that truly don’t know history or ethnicity well. ;)

Sadly, there are SOME things the U.S. (Politicians and People ofPower) Should Apologize for- Iran-Contra, making the Ayatolla THE Head of Iran in the first place, supporting and propping Dictators BEFORE Condeming them (since they give us Oil and mostly kept Terrorism away from U.S. soil until ’93 and 9/11), and pretty much Taliking about Democracy but Bitch and Moan when countries elect people and governments that Just Don’t Like America; Thy Voted and Those are the People they Voted For…. just like 2010 gave us the Tea Party and a Useless Congress full of members that are Islamophobes, Homophobes, Racists, etc., Iraq, Pakistan, Libya, Afghanistan, and Egypt elected their Tea Party-versions, who Despise the U.S. and Israel. I haven’t seen the film nor do I condone $hittin on anyone else’s beliefs but ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?! Thats the only reaction I have while watching what’s going on and what caused it… a Youtube video!!? You f*cking kidding me!? The causality of it all blows my mind. 4 people died because someone, of zero importance and little influence, decided to pull out a recording device and created something that in some way disesteemed your prophet Mohammed?! How do you justify that?! Not to generalize but they look like a nation of immature children.

        • http://valsotherblog.wordpress.com Val

Yeah, those are extremists that after the revolutions in Egypt and Libya now have freedoms they haven’t had before and they are using that stupid film as an opportunity to try to shake things up and make those respective governments and the people more radical.

        • nillalatte

I’m gonna try to help bring this into perspective for you Jay. Rodney King. Okay, he wasn’t a prophet or an especially important person, but when those 4 white police officers were announced not guilty, what did the black folks of LA do? They rioted for what they considered injustice against a black man, right? Same mentality. Yes, I think that these pockets (not whole nations mind you) are extremists and violent when Islam absolutely forbids this type of action/reaction. However, extremists will justify their actions as being the ‘right’ way and use religion as an excuse to act this way. Eventually, these extremists will probably be jailed or killed themselves. It’s not childlike mentality as much as it is cult/gang like mentality, and dangerous. The way these people think, the extremists, they definitely have some wires crossed. Trust.

          • https://twitter.com/#!/mackaroto Jay

Nilla, Nilla, Nilla. I totally reject your comparison of the Libyan situation to the L.A. riots. You can’t compare the two. I’m sorry but you just CAN’T.

They rioted for what they considered injustice against a black man, right?
No it WAS injustice… clear as day on videotape. Wheres the injustice in the Libya situation!? One stupid unimportant American makes an offensive Youtube video and now all of a sudden its “DEATH TO AMERICA”. They need to grow up. Stupid people do stupid $hit. Accepting that is part of living as an adult on this planet. And the L.A. riots were about police brutality that had been brewing for years. L.A. was sitting on a powder keg and the Rodney King beating was the tipping point. The community rioting had been terrorized by the very people who were supposed to protect them and they were pissed. Did we not just assist Libya in overthrowing a tyrant?! And at least Rodney King was a LIVING HUMAN BEING. Its crazy how people go to extremes to defend dead prophets and deities when neither needs you to defend them. One is dead and the other is um… you know… omnipotent!! Neither Mohammad nor Allah needs your rock throwing a$$ to storm an embassy on his behalf. It’s childish, primitive thinking.

            • http://asiyah3.wordpress.com Asiyah

“Neither Mohammad nor Allah needs your rock throwing a$$ to storm an embassy on his behalf. It’s childish, primitive thinking.”

That’s true. You are right, but the same can be said about those people rioting for anything or anyone. They don’t really need our riots.

I for one don’t like any movie depicting any prophets, be it Jesus, Muhammad, David, Solomon, Adam, Moses, etc. but I won’t go ahead and kill people for it. I believe in actions, not reactions. Whatever film or article or movie comes out will not elicit a reaction from me; I will simply keep living my life as God has intended me to live it. And Allah knows best.

            • nillalatte

Jay, dear, I’m not comparing the reasons for the riots, I’m comparing the mentality. It’s exactly the same emotion. To these Arabs/Muslims there has been a long history of being disrespected and persecuted for their beliefs and culture. There is a long history of the American government doing exactly that — oppressing a people, oppressing their religion, just as in the black communities of America.

I didn’t mean to imply that what happened to Rodney King was not injustice. Without a doubt, it was, and I supported the cops going to jail for their crime. However, I did not support the riots where pockets of people maimed and killed because of the injustice that came out of that courtroom. It was just as wrong for those people to do as what these folks are doing in Libya and elsewhere.

Yes, Ghadahfi is gone, but here’s the issue with these life long tyrants ruling countries for generations; generations know no other way of life. Same with Saddam and Iraq. Democracy takes generations to develop. An entire country doesn’t just come to maturity when its people have been oppressed for so long. The only thing they’ve had to cling to is their religion and that has caused some very weird interpretations to manifest.

I agree with violence being childish and primitive thinking. But, here’s the irony in that… that is the only response these people understood from their ‘parent’ (Ghadahfi) so how else would you expect them to act when they haven’t been taught differently? This is why technology is either a medium for bringing folks together or further distancing the world.

BTW, I consider the guy that made that film an extremist. As do I consider the pastor in FL who burned Quran’s. There was nothing positive to come from these idiots. They only stir deep negative emotions in extremists all over the world and then you get what we got in Libya. If a lot more people would practice the Golden Rule world over we’d have a lot less discourse and violence.

          • Medium Meech

@Nilla: A more appropriate comparison for Rodney King would be the Arab Summer. I’m not sure if there is any comparison that could explain the mind state to Americans. Our reactions to the cheering after 9/11 maybe, but that doesn’t really fit. The cultures are just too different. The only segements of U.S. society with strong enough group identity markers or jingoistic sentiments to identify or relate to the feeling are oddly enough the same people who would make and approve of a video like that in the first place. You would think black people could, but the friction between minority sub-culture and the mainstream is different than the friction between two seperate cultures.

            • nillalatte

“@Nilla: A more appropriate comparison for Rodney King would be the Arab Summer.”

The Arab Spring is a good comparison. Thanks.

“the friction between minority sub-culture and the mainstream is different than the friction between two separate cultures.”

Different true. Transferable? I think so.

See I knew there was a reason I was feeling this magnet toward you. You have a way of viewing ‘arguments’ objectively and rationally, then providing other realistic views. I’m likely to find a quite corner with you in the future. ;) — Breezy, me and Meech are next in the corner! lol

            • Medium Meech

*Arab Spring. I’ll bring poweraid and trail mix, but those 2 dont mess with me anymore. Black people can relate and I think large segments of us are more simpathetic to Muslims (or are Muslim) and don’t see the U.S. from as strong as a nationalist view as others. But we are American in that it is hard for us to trully undertand the violation of a sacred abstract taboo (with this forceful of a reaction) because of our diverse and somewhat liberal (in the true sense) culture. A gang member disrepecting another gang member’s colors, yeah, but not really universally accepted.

              • Justmetheguy

No I agree with u both (Meech and Nilla). It is transferable and the disrespecting o Mohommed was most likely the straw that broke the camel’s back so to speak. I would imagine there’s a lot more to the story given the U.S.’s nefarious history in the Middle East.

                • Medium Meech

Maybe I’m not creative enough to come up with the parallel. What do you think it would be? As black people and Americans we have seen some pretty “disrespectful” films and books from fringe elements, but I couldn’t see people understanding a reaction like that to the slight. Think about that. Some random individual said or did disrespectful to an abstract cultural icon that there are riots over multiple countries. What do we have that sacred?

                  • Justmetheguy

Meech- It was foul and out of line. I don’t condone an overreaction of that sort, but I think it was about much more than that film. (imperialism comes to mind) But I could very well be makin it deeper than it is and givin an extremist idiot too much credit. The Middle East is a mess and our foreign policy has a pretty large chunk of the blame in the mess. That was my only point…And you’re right, black folks have tolerated disrespect on MUCH greater levels than a sacrilegious film

                  • Medium Meech

It’s Apples and oranges. I’m not even trying to compare who has been though worse casue I know it’s people over that deal with way more stuff when we do, even among the different branches and ehtnicities. The poverty and unemployment is really what is allowing the extreme views to flourish. It’s a mess. Men need productive stuff to do. All I’m saying is that I can’t think of anything stateside that was symbolic that would make us that upset so it is hard to relate.

                    • Justmetheguy

I feel ike this the modern Crusades happening right now and for the past 20 years. All I know is Christian extremists don’t represent ALL of Christianity, but Some Islamist Extremists have led to people here in the U.S. to call ALL Muslims- even U.S. Born Arab-Americans- Terrorsits, the same as how the Japanese were treated during WWII. Like I wrote on Facebook a few days ago, Me being Agnostic and Blac kwon’t save me if I do go travel overseas because I’m an American, and damn near the entire region has bounties of * “72 virgins and favor in the yes of Allah”* for the kidnapping/death of Americans

“damn near the entire region has bounties of * “72 virgins and favor in the yes of Allah”* for the kidnapping/death of Americans”

I’d have to disagree with this statement. It only depends on what countries and specific places in those countries. I traveled quite a bit in the Middle East alone. I got looks and some crazy cab driver tried to pick me up, but mostly folks let you do you. It’s only the crazies and we have those here in America too. Street smarts is always a good thing to have anywhere.

As for the 72 virgin thing (rolling eyes). That is not in the Quran, but was Hadith and is a metaphor.

THANK YOU! I have read the Qur’an in both English and Spanish and have never seen or read that. As for Hadiths, we all know that some Hadiths are fabricated, some are rigorously authentic, some are questionable and debatable, etc.

            • Medium Meech

I never got the 72 virgins thing. Wouldn’t you want like 69 virgins and 3 freaks to teach them the ways? 72 inexperienced chicks catching first time feelings seems like no paradise I’d want to visit.

“Great, now that dumb arse Christian extremist film is “American values?””

No, but the right to criticize any religion at will is. Nobody has the right to respond violently because their religion was insulted and apologizing only feeds that entitlement.

        • http://valsotherblog.wordpress.com Val

That’s the point though. There were still Americans in harms way in Libya and that’s why the State Department issued that “apology”. The situation required finesse, not we’re Americans and we can say what we want. That’s what Mitt didn’t get.

          • veryaveragebrotha

So we should be in the business of temporarily compromising our values/principles/constitution in order to possibly save a life or two? I fundamentally disagree with that position. I don’t believe in negotiating with terrorists, because you always loose.

            • http://valsotherblog.wordpress.com Val

Well to me, there is no real compromising of ‘American values’ when politicians keep quiet until a situation is under control. I wouldn’t think that waiting 72 hours to score political points is asking a lot when lives are at stake.

              • veryaveragebrotha

Problem Val, is you’re under the misguided notion that you can appease extremists. You can’t…what happens is you just end up compromising your own values and STILL end up having to fight them in the end. Case in point…The embassy statement came BEFORE the attacks started…and guess what, they still did.

                • http://valsotherblog.wordpress.com Val

Sometimes diplomacy is not about talking someone off a ledge, but not talking them into jumping. I’m not talking about a long-term strategy. I’m talking about a situational strategy. There was chaos and the situation required not making more chaos.

                  • veryaveragebrotha

I see you conveniently failed to address my case in point. Here’s the BLOT (bottom line on top). Diplomacy does not apply to extremists/fanatics. Never in the history of mankind, has it worked with them – long term or otherwise. Again, case in point – The embassy statement came well BEFORE the attacks started, AND THEY STILL HAPPENED!!!
The only thing trying appease them does, is show them that their barbaric tactics are acceptable…which only means they will use them again….’cause if it isn’t broken…

              • veryaveragebrotha

also – a quick clarification, I believe in diplomacy, but you can be diplomatic without compromising your principles. That embassy statement blatantly violated the spirit of the first amendment. They could have easily dropped a statement simply distancing the US govt from that documentary, rather than condemning it.

            • Huh Bruh

That’s not seeing the big picture. Yes, we’ve only lost four live as of yet, but our response to this situation could cause a firestorm. Radical groups are using this situation as a way to move Muslims who may already resent the U.S. over to their way of thinking. The video is a tool for extremists to exacerbate the situation.

          • nillalatte

“The situation required finesse, not we’re Americans and we can say what we want.”

Exactly. This is something that GWB didn’t get either and as a result international relations were non-existent and traveling abroad was especially dangerous. Obama brought a breath of fresh air to the foreign relations situation, but has still had to be very careful. He has some awesome assets that uniquely set him apart from any other President we’ve ever had and we’re not likely to have another like him. A lot of his perspective comes from his bi-racial, multi-ethnic background and has been an essential part of his Presidency.

            • http://valsotherblog.wordpress.com Val

Yeah, Bush’s “bring it on” foreign policy really hurt us all. All those years were wasted when the U.S. could have made real progress in strengthening relationships, especially right after 9/11.

              • https://twitter.com/#!/IluminatiNYC Todd

I see where you’re coming from, but on the big picture, I have to put this on the Foreign Service. There seems to be this odd mindset in the diplomatic community that The Coasts = America, and there hasn’t been a sincere attempt to bridge the gap between Red America and the world. Yeah, the Cowboy mindset is there, and it’s foolish. However, if you know your history, the Cowboy mindset didn’t come out of nowhere (hint: Google the phrase “Border Reivers” one lazy afternoon and you’ll learn a lot), and you need to somehow show that yes, this is a part of America and here is why. Diplomacy requires that you figure out how to get the best possible situation while respecting the beliefs and desires of other groups, and the Foreign Service has flat out sucked in doing so.

“Exactly. This is something that GWB didn’t get either and as a result international relations were non-existent”

Ok..there’s a blurring of issues here that I feel the need to point out. There’s a distinct difference between the extremist policies that GWB carried out, and not compromising on the issue of freedom of speech. People both here and abroad of ALL religions need to realize that they do not have a right to demand that other people adhere to or show reverence for their religions. That’s not something that should be negotiable.

              • nillalatte

“not compromising on the issue of freedom of speech.”

There is a difference between freedom of speech and hate speech. BTW, countries the world over DO NOT live by the American constitution. Apologies, but you are exhibiting an egocentric American way of thinking i.e. if you don’t do it like the US you must be wrong. In reality, folks that think like this are not seeing the other side of the situation clearly and IMHO cannot find that common ground that is needed in foreign affairs to cultivate mutually beneficial relationships.

“People both here and abroad of ALL religions need to realize that they do not have a right to demand that other people adhere to or show reverence for their religions.”

Right. They are not demanding you show reverence or acceptance, but tolerance. There is no reason, none, that anyone has to burn Qurans or make films that degrade anothers belief system. It is wrong and demonstrates hate. It is an attempt to stir hate.

                • veryaveragebrotha

“There is a difference between freedom of speech and hate speech.”

Actually there isn’t. ‘Hate speech’ is a constitutionally protected right.

” BTW, countries the world over DO NOT live by the American constitution. Apologies, but you are exhibiting an egocentric American way of thinking”

Having lived in 27 and travelled to about 90 of them, I’m fully aware of this. What you’re conveniently forgetting is that this was a movie made by americans on american soil. IT IS THEY WHO ARE NOT respecting the fact that we have different rules. If this was some issue of a dude going to their country grabbing a podium and spewing his shit that would be a different story. What you’re suggesting is we should change the way American’s behave IN AMERICA because people in another country don’t like it??? ummmmmm……NO.

                • veryaveragebrotha

“Right. They are not demanding you show reverence or acceptance, but tolerance. There is no reason, none, that anyone has to burn Qurans ”

Actually what you’re describing here is demanding reverence. Tolerance is respecting your right to hold a religious belief and build places of worship etc.. without prosecution (which should always be protected). I am however NOT required to value your holy books more than I value a piece of trash in my garbage.

Secondly, I’d just like to state that there IS reason to burn most holy books in existence. Most of them have single or multiple passages that talk a WHOLE lot of shit about non-believers. Is it ok for non believers to DEMAND those passages be stricken from your holy books?????? Because if it isn’t, that’s special pleading….I don’t play that..

              • http://asiyah3.wordpress.com Asiyah

I believe in freedom of speech and you know what? A lot of Muslims do. That’s why you’re not seeing every Muslim on the planet going up in arms. We don’t like this video, we don’t agree with it, but most of us accept the fact that not everybody will see our religion in a positive light. That dude can make all the videos he wants and it won’t matter all that much. At the end, this is deeper than a video. Look at the Salman Rushdie situation. Sure, lots of Muslims were upset about it. A few even took to the streets, but did it go this far? A fatwa was issued for his head and a few months later this was old news. All of this is happening because of bigger issues. This was just the straw that broke the camel’s back. Ain’t got nothing to do with freedom of speech. Just stating the obvious. Of course, not justifying the reactions because if I’m able to control my feelings, others can too.

              • Medium Meech

Right. So we shouldn’t let anybody compromise our (tragically misunderstood) ideal about freedom of speech. Anyone else’s lesser ideals are secondary and not as right/important.

                • http://asiyah3.wordpress.com Asiyah

Some people take Freedom of Speech as an inalienable right. Like if it’s the most valued freedom. I don’t know much, but what I do know is that my rights end where yours begin. If you are manipulating this freedom to trump on my rights, isn’t that a problem? Serious question.

                  • Medium Meech

Freedom of speech is a strong component of a free nation if other components are in place, but it can be an effective tool for repression and division as well. It shouldn’t be held up as a righteous ideal and in fact, no one in the government is denying his right to make the video or trying to imprison him for it so it really isn’t an issue. We as a country are in no way obligated to defend everything one of our citizens says anonymously so I don’t really get the argument.

And yes, it does end when it starts to affect people beside yourself.

                    • http://asiyah3.wordpress.com Asiyah

I don’t get the “freedom of speech” argument either as it pertains to this issue, but maybe it’s because, while I have a problem with the content of the video, I also have the freedom not to watch it. Also, those rioting aren’t concerned with “freedom of speech.” They just feel disrespected. When I hear people say, “oh well we have freedom of speech!” I say “yes, that’s true, but if you were at the receiving end of the polemic and rhetoric, would you justify it?” Pretty complicated stuff.

                • veryaveragebrotha

“Right. So we shouldn’t let anybody compromise our (tragically misunderstood) ideal about freedom of speech. Anyone else’s lesser ideals are secondary and not as right/important.”

Absolutely. America a sovereign nation. Perhaps you’re a tad unfamiliar with the facts here, but this was a movie, made by americans on AMERICAN SOIL!! Are you now suggesting that Americans should alter what Americans can or cant do on American soil based off other peoples ideals……ummm….NO.

                  • Medium Meech

I don’t think anyone said that. But the government doesn’t have to defend the product because it was made in America by Americans. It can call it hate speech but still not deny the right of anyone to produce it.

                    • veryaveragebrotha

“But the government doesn’t have to defend the product because it was made in America by Americans.”

Actually it shouldn’t defend the product if it’s religious in nature, but likewise, it shouldn’t condem it (which it explicitly did) that is a violation of the spirit of the first amendment. Like I said, I would have been ok with the govt saying..’The US govt. in now way endorses or supports or agrees with this video.’ But going a step further to condem it, wend too far.

                    • Medium Meech

Ideologues So your argument is that no one in government should be able to speak critically about anything an American says regardless of the merit of the statement or the, confusion around if it represents America as a whole, or the consequences for other Americans. You should really be able to relate to the ideologues taking up arms in the Middle East because there is no room for doubt or compromise in the absolute righteousness of your convictions as well.

  • That Ugly Kid

First thing’s first, Malik was right. Cruel Summer > Watch The Throne (And I’m one of the people who think WTT was great)

Now that’s out of the way, I agree with Panama. I assume people blog about what makes them happy. Or basically, they write what they want to write about. A growing audience shouldn’t mean a shift in topic or writing style in an effort to be more “positive” or “righteous”. Writing your way is what got you here, to this level, no need to pull a Nicki Minaj and switch sh!t up on us. Seriously dude don’t pull a Nicki Minaj.

But that’s honestly one of the major reasons why I don’t have a blog or tumblr thingy of my own. I wouldn’t even know what to write about. And I don’t want to write post after post only to have my cousin thrice removed, be my only visitor. Tis the reason why I stopped writing poetry and short stories and posting them on FB. However, kudos to you and Champ for keeping it going for so long.

    • https://twitter.com/#!/mackaroto Jay

How are youze able to hear Cruel Summer a full week before it drops. I’ve only heard “Clique” which murders 50% of Throne so I’m inclined to believe you.

      • Double_Dizze

The internets have a way of springing leaks from time to time….you’d be amazed at what you find, should you go fishing…

        • msdebbs

No need to fish there are zillons of blogs that you can download music from…..and that album is ridiculously dope.

      • That Ugly Kid

Lol, I know people. Legit people. I get most albums a week or so before they drop. Like, the actual albums, not bullsh!t leaks or whatever. I still go out and pay for it if it’s an artist I like. And since I stan for Kanye and everything he does, I’m coping this on the 18th.

But yeah the album is really good. The only weak track being “Higher”. Mostly because The Dream’s vocals kinda throw everything off. Would’ve been way better without the auto-tune.

        • Double_Dizze

Yeah, I’ll agree with you on it being a good album…and I’ll most likely cop the retail version once it drops. That ‘Higher’…it’s rare that a song will upset me enough to make me stop listening to an album just so I can regain my composure. Last song to do that was ‘Yuck’ off that 2 Chainz T.R.U. Story.

          • That Ugly Kid

LMAO. That’s funny because “Yuck” was the very first song on that album. I actually like it though. The beat is dope to me for some reason.

            • Double_Dizze

EXACTLY. First song on the album, and I was looking at my laptop screen like there was feces smeared on it. When dude went into that ‘ibelikeifyouwantheryoucangetherandyoucanhaveherandhebelikeyouwanthermeneitherandiwaslikeyup’ there at the end of the song, I had to call it a day for 2 Chainz. I love my ears, and will not allow them to be assaulted by foolishness of that magnitude.

              • That Ugly Kid

“When dude went into that ‘ibelikeifyouwantheryoucangetherandyoucanhaveherandhebelikeyouwanthermeneitherandiwaslikeyup’ there at the end of the song”

LMAO. That wasn’t the end! That was literally the MIDDLE of the song. You must have gotten p!ssed and turned the song off immediately after hearing it.

                • Double_Dizze

That was the middle? Shock and awe.

Ahem, can we speak a moment about Ice-T’s “hip-hop” documentary? I mean, it IS Friday. =)

Not to disrespect the old heads, forefathers, and founders of hip-hop but never before has a movie about hip hop had such a plethora of $hitty freestyles. Just keeping it 100.

      • http://verysmartbrothas.com Panama Jackson

i havent’ seen it yet. *drops head in shame*

but if ice t freestyles in it then of course the quality fo them all would suck. you cant let ninjas out shine and Ice is and has always been a fairly terrible rapper.

        • https://twitter.com/#!/mackaroto Jay

I posted my comment before I saw Mos Def, Eminem, Redman, and Nas… they all repped. Nonetheless… there’s no shortage of uninspired freestyles in it.

          • mellow.

i honestly wasnt AS annoyed by said whack flows as I was about the CONSTANT aeriel shots of NY… there’s gotta be more to life than Ice T’s directorial debut

  • http://www.twitter.com/deannadivine DeannaDivine

Yeah. I don’t post often. But this made me rise to the challenge. I’ve been reading this blog pretty much every day for the past 3 years. I love it for the ridiculousness, the varied topics, the regular crew of responders and the fact that you don’t have a freakin’ platform. If I wanted to be saved, I’d go to church. If I wanna read about an issue, I’ll check out CNN or BlackAmericaWeb. I come here for laughs, insight, and the awesomeness of “Girllll He a 3!” and the Champ (and Liz when she stops by!).

Write what you want. It works. It makes me happy. Don’t change. Let the ones who need “growth” repot their plants elsewhere. Personally, I’m getting all the shine I need right here on this site! Smooches! #FAMUForever
