5 Good Songs From Artists You’d Least Expect

ATTN: TODAY WE ARE BRINGING YOU A DOUBLE HEADER (NO TYRA). AFTER YOU CHECK OUT THIS POST, PLEASE BE SURE TO CHECK OUT THE FIRST EPISODE OF OUR PODCAST!! CLICK HERE TO LISTEN (at least check out our theme music!).

Let’s have some fun today. This past week has been full of ups and downs and somebody even said that the week’s posts weren’t helping them thru their relationship troubles.

You can’t fight crime if you’re out murdering mofos, now can you?

So today, let’s go in a different direction and put a spotlight on people who aren’t used to the spotlight – at least not for good reasons. Since I’m the music guy over here at VSB, and despite some folks taking shots at the King’s musical selections, I figure that I should remind you that even the worst artists can make some good music from time to time. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, today is the day where I show you that hope really does float and that there are always gems in the ocean and diamonds in the rough.

And most importantly, a broke clock is indeed right at least twice a day, unless of course your clock is digital in which case..f*ck yo’ clock.

Ahem.

1. Ray J – Keep Your Head Up

Now you KNEW that there was no way Ray J WASN’T going to show up here.  If you can just ignore the uber cornball imagery and gangster posering that Ray provides for this song (about upliftment to boot), you actually have a really good song that’s all about esteem boosting for women who can’t seem to see silver linings or anything.  Who needs a wonderbra when Ray J is around?  Basically, it’s the R&B version of Tupac’s “Keep Your Head Up” if Tupac had a sister who’s career (at the time) overshadowed him and had no real concept of who he was so he came off kind of dorky and..well…Ray J-ish.  By the way, “One Wish” is ALSO that crack.

For The Love of Ray J 2…Monday’s on vh1.

2. Immature – Feel The Funk

When was the last time you even thought about Immature?  If you’re like me, it’s been a while.  But those boys actually made a few good damn songs, with “Feel The Funk” from the Dangerous Minds soundtrack being some top shelf music.  They also had “Never Lie” with the standard (for the time) video on a beach wearing a lot of linen which made it very difficult for LDB – Little Drummer Boy – since all he could do was beat on rocks since he’s not much of a singer. Oh what a tangled web they woved.  Bottom line, one of the best songs you rarely remember was provided by 3 kids, one of which had a perm and called himself Batman.

Speaking of lil ole Batman

3. Marques Houston – All Because of You

Just a great damn song from the music down to the strange retarded rap by Rome (formerly Romeo). Hate him or love him that dude hit gold with this song.  “I don’t wanna play no games, wanna change your name to my name baby…”  Pure poetry.

4. Tyrese – How You Gonna Act Like That

I don’t know about you, but when I think of Tyrese, I think of Baby Boy 10 times out of 10. And then there’s his whole Black Ty f*ckery of an experiment. However, Tyrese ALSO brought us two really good songs in “Sweet Lady” and “How You Gonna Act Like That”.  Now I don’t care for the former but I recognize that it was a good joint.  But this song?  This song right here, ninja? I mean I want to know why she gonna act like that too.  So it’s good AND relevant. BTW, what the f*ck is Vevo??  And don’t even get me started on “What Am I Gonna Do?” GREAT song.

5. Pleasure P – Under

I know, I know. This dude was apart of freakin’ Pretty Ricky. I know. But let me tell you, I’d been hearing “Under” for a solid month before who I found out who it was and every time I’d sing along and be on some, “now this is some solid R&B” only to find out it was by motherloving Pleasure P of Pretty Ricky. Well, I got right with my soul after that and accepted that you know what, he made a good song and that is just what it is. I bought my soul back from Robert Johnson though, just in case you were wondering.

Those are 5 songs that are better than we give most of the artists credit for?

So, what you got?

-VSB P aka THE ARSONIST aka TANGLE JIG P aka GIIIIIIIIIIIIIIRL, HE A 3

BTW, I realize that I didn’t pick any women’s songs. For some reason, I couldn’t think of any women who made songs that surprised me b/c of what they’d done prior or who they were.  I guess women are just consistent. Yay prunes.

  1. Beauty by sisqo and ‘nem…their name escapes me at the moment…but they started with Tell Me and i was like “eh, shoulder shrug” and sisqo’s high octane-ish (yes i made that up) voice got on my nerves but Beauty was.is the ish…

    • @Caramel eclair,

LOL at “sisqo and nem” .. you mean Dru Hill? They had a few good songs tho. We’re not makin love no more? PSHHHH That was the ish!

    • @Caramel eclair,

beauty was a really good song. and please don’t let it be 1999/2000 and some corny ninja is singing it to you. chiiiiiiiiiiile, 15 year old charli skipper would be done.

    • @Caramel eclair,
I ADORE that song. Almost brought a tear to my eye when I would hear it when I was younger.

“Sisquo and ‘nem” though? LOL I’m mad they are already being forgotten.

    • @Caramel eclair,

Beauty by sisqo and ‘nem…their name escapes me at the moment

just this week my dad asked me if “this dru hill person” was a woman. apparently they’re on one of the body and soul cd’s he owns, and he apparently also thinks sisqo sounds like a chick.

    • @Caramel eclair,

ITA! Beauty by Dru Hill is a song I was surprised about and I like that song too!

      • @legitimate_soul, i’m curious as to why Beauty surprised you considering 5 steps and songs like that they were known for.

songs like, “we’re not making love no more”

        they were makign Joe songs…lol.

    • @Caramel eclair, i dont know if i could in good faith include Dru Hill on a list like this. I mean they had beaucoup dope songs and meaningful good songs.

even when they acquired the new 5th dru hill ninja they were making dope music.

      • @Panama Jackson, awwww man… yall taking me down memory lane right now.. Dru Hill was my motherf**king sh*t!!!!!! I mean, thats like classic 90′s/early 2000 R&B – Tell Me, Sleeping in my bed, 5 Steps, Beauty, You Are Everything.. even Sisqo’s solo CD was pretty good. Sisqo may be a joke these days (with his thong wearing sweet a**) but you cannot deny they were the SHYT back in the day.

Oh yeah, K-Ci and JoJo!! LOOOOOOVVVVEED them.. “Tell me it’s reeeaaal…. the feelings that we feeeeeeel” lol

  2. Honestly folk, Pleasure P’s “Under” was just a remade, rewritten version of Marques Houston’s “Naked”…same tempo, same general song structure, etc. Just a few different lyrics…

  3. LMAO at this whole post. I used to go around in high school singing “Baby you hang up! No you hang up! On three hang up!!” lol

As for my contribution — I gotta go with “Bed” by J. Holiday. I mean… his CD was named “Back of my Lac” which in and of itself is pretty corny, but “Bed” goes…. Can’t too many say they wasn’t singing along with that catchy azz chorus “I’ma put you to bed… bed! .. bed! …bed!” LOL

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=82t_UOMHPJY

  4. Tank–Slowly. This song is only played during those special times. It’s nice & slow… smooth rhythm. Yeah, I like this song.
Common–Punch Drunk Love. I feel like people didn’t really care for UMC, but I liked it, and I like this song. “Check the dictionary, that ass is so defined.” #cmonson
Dru Hill– Sleeping in my Bed
Tupac–How Do you Want It. Ok, I love Pac, and I loved it when he talked dirty to me.

That’s all I have for this morning. Perhaps people do give the artists credit for these songs. Me no know….

    • @N.I.A. lovesthekids….,

I’m not sure Common, Pac, or even Dru Hill belongs on this list…this is more for those artists who have one or two songs you may like, but you’d never actually BUY their albums. Pac and Common are considered pretty elite MCs (with actual music catalogs), and even Dru Hill had a pretty good run in the late 90′s.

I think this list is more for the ‘Soulja Boy Tel’ ems’ of the world…

    • @N.I.A. lovesthekids….,

I swear I thought that I was the only one that cut for Punch Drunk Love by Common. That song is a jam for real. I actually like Kanye’s hook and the Neptunes killed that beat. Never thought Common had that side to him. It sounded corny coming from him but it is a good song.

      • @ComicBookGuy,

I liked “Punch Drunk” too, though I wasnt too big on Universal Mind Control in general.

        • @Me fail english?,

Funny thing: I heard Common being interviewed on satellite radio last year and he was talking about releasing a party/dance record after Finding Forever. I was thinking it was going to suck and sure enough I was right. Stick to the conscious rap, Common. It’s what you are good at and there is too much going on the world. I felt like he kinda insulted his fanbase trying to come out with a “feel good record”.

          • @ComicBookGuy,

Word. I’m all about branching out. But Common is still Common Sense to me. Couldn’t get with his sleeveless turtleneck phase and I will NOT stand for his foray into Pharell/Bootsy Collins territory! lol

        • @Panama Jackson,

Tell us how you really feel, son. lol

I feel ya, though. I swear when I heard him talk about last year, it was doomed from the beginning.

  5. First time commenting. You got me crying laughing.

I was curious about that Ray J joint so I clicked on it…
    should’ve known better.

    Then that bit on LDB…
    HI-FRIGGIN-LARIOUS!

Now that “How You Gonna Act Like That”?!
After a quick listen to that, I always wanna change my cold dissin’ behavior.

I really needed the laughter- thanx!

  6. “…somebody even said that the week’s posts weren’t helping them thru their relationship troubles.”*

Say what? Did I just get an indirect shout out (even though it seemed more like pity)??

    I feel so special :)

*I never said “troubles”; y’all were just adding a bit of doubt.

  7. @ Charli skipper
lol! naw… i jus heard the song the other day on the local radio station and started singing my heart out loved this song…for some reason that song and jagged edge’s song walked right outta heaven been playing kinda frequently on that particular radio station i’m thinkn the dj going thru some thangs…

    • @Caramel eclair,

      “walked right outta heaven”

Good one! I don’t care for ANY of JE’s music. But this one right here…ahhhh

  8. yup I might have to agree with those who said that this week’s posts did nothing for them. It definitely was not your best stuff guys… entertaining nonetheless but I was left wanting in the balance. Still have love for VSB cus yall keep it real over here.

    Please go hard next week

    • @sexywinergirl, yup I might have to agree with those who said that this week’s posts did nothing for them.

um that aint what they said, nor what i said. lol. they said that given their long distance status in a relationship, these posts weren’t helping (ie cheating), etc. lol.

but thanks for the constructive criticism and advice.

  9. yeah under is the shyt and marques houston joint is nice although I liked a few joints off that naked cd
I loved immature! even the song were kel was rapping….
oh and that tyrese sweet lady cd was the shyt!
    other joints
    sisqo incomplete
miley cyrus party in the usa…that joint is mad catchy! lol
that sex therapy by robin thicke I mean I like robin and he makes good music but that joint is suprisingly hot!
jon b that joint with him and 2pac lol are you still down? cmon jon b and pac after pac’s death?

    • @shay-d-lady,

jon b that joint with him and 2pac lol are you still down? cmon jon b and pac after pac’s death?

you’re right. this isnt a terrible song

    • @shay-d-lady, Jon B’s albums were all actually pretty good. and yes that means i own ALL of them. lol.

and that miley cyrus song is dope as hell. but i liked her first, “i’m just being miley” song.

  10. Jahiem generally bores me to tears. All of his songs sound the same and that is NOT a good thing. But for some reason I liked “Backtight.”

Mystikal, “Man Right Chea” and “Danger.” I think he had the best flow out of that whole crew, but people (meaning those on the east and those on the west who hate to acknowledge any talent coming out of the south or the midwest) seem to write him off.

I find Nelly to be a sad one trick pony but I liked his guest appearance on R.Kelly’s (I know, I know) “Tryna Get a Number.”

Trey Songz seems to be very predictable, but maybe that’s just because the label chooses the singles and the radio plays them to death. But his 2009 Mixtape (I think it was a mixetape) had some surprises on it. “Don’t Wanna Come Down,” “Stupid Things” and “Feeling Like Money” had me going this summer.

I am not a Mary J. Blige fan and the only song I really like from her continues to be “You Remind Me.” Same for Faith Evans, but I like “Soon As I Get Home.”

“Chopped & Screwed” also entertained me and I thought that nothing from T “she made us drinks to drink, we drunk ‘em” Pain would ever entertain me.

And, fellas, I think the posts this week were great. You can’t please all the people all the time so you might as well do you and brush ya shoulders off.

    • @BiggFoxy,

This “T- she made us drinks to drink, we drunk em – Pain” slayed me…. and this:

“fellas, I think the posts this week were great. You can’t please all the people all the time so you might as well do you and brush ya shoulders off.”

I must Co-sign to the fullest!

    • @BiggFoxy,
Mystikal, “Man Right Chea” and “Danger.”

      Ya’ll MF’ers ain’t ready!!!!! I just wanted to yell that right quick…lol

    • @BiggFoxy,

Mystikal, “Man Right Chea” and “Danger.” I think he had the best flow out of that whole crew, but people (meaning those on the east and those on the west who hate to acknowledge any talent coming out of the south or the midwest) seem to write him off

I’m from the midwest and don’t care much for dude. He isn’t wack but I never got into his music except for maybe 3 songs. I had one set of friends that liked him and one set that didn’t. All of them are from the midwest. They both liked the Boot Camp Clik and thought the other Boot Camp Clik was wack. I can’t speak for the whole midwest but I know in Detroit and Chicago we aren’t as monolithic in our taste of Hip-Hop as other regions.

      • @Humble_One, Bwoy stop! “F!ck a dolla girl/pick-up fifty. Forget that coward girl/you need a real niqqa”… genius at it’s best- LOL

        • @Me fail english?,

The name of Mystical’s crew when he first came out was Boot Camp Clik. When he first came out I met mad people that knew nothing about Black Moon, Smif n Wessun, etc. I was surprised because me and crew messed with BCC(NY) hard.

          • @Humble_One,

Mystikal is a fan of hiphop. I’m mad he aint neva heard some Originoo Gun Clappaz.

          • @Humble_One, unless you were on some real hiphop shit it would be real easy to not even know who BCC BK were. lol. like OGC, made dope music but who was listening to that anywhere but ny? not that it excuses using a similar name…

on a side note, i STILL rock heltah skeltah’s nocturnal album. that is some beautiful music.

            lefleur leflah eshkoshka!!!!

            as we say in eshkoshkin…

    • @BiggFoxy,

I’m from NY and I thought Mystikal was nice. But his delivery was so “scream-y” and his accent was so thick half the time I aint know what he was talmbout!

Trey’s mixtapes are dope! He’s been putting out (at least) one per year since ’07 and they’re always crack. The albums leave a little more to be desired…

And I thought this was an especially good week on VSB.

  11. Boyyyyy, you can’t be a 3 when you pick songs like “All because of you!” That gets constant rotation on the ipod.
“Roger, go home” is still a cornball tho

      • @Me fail english?,

shooooot Sister, Sister was the ish! Now, I catch some reruns every now and then and think “Wth was I thinking???!!… and what was roger thinking with them mini Coolio braids all over his head?”

  12. Dude

Let me be the first to say i previously refused to listen to anything by Pleasure, cause of his realtion to Pretty Ricky…..but dude

“Under” is a solid tack, and i digress….continueng to eat my humble pie… it hink i might give the kid a break and while I’m in the spirit of open minededness maybe i’ll give Nicki Minaj, Gucci Mane, Triple C a try

  13. “I Wanna Sex You Up” was my ish. Color Me Badd may have been corny as all get out, but nobody can deny that song. “I Adore Mi Amore” wasn’t bad either.

This got me feeling all nostalgic. And old.

    • @SaneN85, that song probably had the biggest instant success rate of any song i’ve heard, like ever.

EVERYBODY loved that song off of first listen.

hell, why else would any body release an album full of some of the ugliest men ever. and i realize two of the dudes were pretty boys. but the ugly dudes were so bad they brought the whole average down.

      • @Panama Jackson, two of them were pretty boys? Mmmh, I can’t recall which two because all of them fools were ugly.

  14. “You” Jesse Powell..every black bride during the 1990s walked down the isle to this song….wondered what happened to him … need an episode of “where are they now”

    • @Caramel eclair, you know whats interesting abou this song is that it was on his first album and nobody cared for it. he put it on his second album, released it as a single, and had a hit.

      how odd is that?

  15. Damn I didn’t want to like Under at all. I tried to fight it but, damn if that ain’t a catchy hook. And co-sign on all three of the Tyrese songs! I feel like he has potential though…

    • Oh anybody remember that joint “Dance tonight” by Lucy Pearl?? “I wanna dance tonight… I wanna toast tonight… I”ll spend my money tonight” lol thaaaat was my ish

  16. Beat me to the Pleasure P cut…when I found out dude was from wack *ss Pretty Ricky, I couldn’t believe it.

I’m not a huge Ne-Yo fan (though I don’t think he’s a horrible artist), but “Fade Into The Background” is a killer.

How about that Limp Bizkit cut with Meth on the mic and Primo on the track?

N*SYNC’s “Gone” certainly surprised the hell out of me. As well as anyone else Black over 18.

    • @Stuff Ghetto People Like,

Meth can do no wrong in my eyes, despite How High. How about Jay-Z and Linkin Park on “Numb.” That shocked the beejesus outta me. Love that cut.

    • @Stuff Ghetto People Like,

Gone was ridiculous. I will not lie tho I refuse to believe anyone around my age (i’m 25 now), that claims they weren’t feeling bye bye bye. The whole structure of the song was crack.

  17. I loved Marques Houston’s song, that and Naked kinda surprised me! I also liked that Tyrese song and he had another one called Signs of Love Makin’ “I met a Scorpio (Damn)” that was my favorite line!

Anthony Hamilton had a few songs I liked. Float, I Tried and Better Days. I used to put those bad boys on repeat and just chill.

      • @The Champ, i agree. anthony hamilton’s regarded as a fairly consistant and good artist.

i mean he aint no Puffy or nothing but he can sing a little bit.

what? you heard puff singing on dirty money.

beautiful music when champagne flutes clink (clink)

        • @Panama Jackson,

          LOL at Diddy/AH Comparison…

          Everything looks/sounds better when it’s viewed in slow motion…. (c/o Chappelle Show)…

*take that, take that* in a low whisper

  18. I would like to submit Playa, “Cheers 2 U”. Thats a smooth jam that turned out to be their one trick pony. But It’s one I cant leave off my slow jams playlist.

    • @BigBuck,

“Cheers to you, for giving me a chance. I’ll be your angel, guardian man.” Good call on that one, you are so right.

    • @BigBuck,

Have you ever noticed that Timberland used the same beat for “Cheers to U” in Baby girl’s “One in a million” & a Justin Timberlake slow jam joint. He’s a one trick pony when it comes to slow songs, but the songs are hot!

    • @BigBuck, yeah, you’re right. that whole album was good though. like you could run it straight thru, no skips.

kind of like Profyle. yeah, i said it. LOL.

      btw, rip static major.

    • @BigBuck,

/I liked that whole CD though… and most of the songs they’re on.

Then again… I kinda like Timbaland waaay more than I maybe should. Oh, well.

*inserts one of many sped-up laugh samples from a Tim track*

  19. a throwback “just got paid , friday nite” Johnny Kemp! Ha! (I had to goggle his name and was hella pissed to discover Nsync did a remake of this and no mention of him anywhere)I was a lil kid and my mom would crank up the radio and my brother and i would dance around then my dad came home and was like sit y’all asses down …and my mom gave him that look…but yeah that song that dude…one hit wonder …again”where are they now”

    • @Caramel eclair, That’s one of those feel good jams right there! Weird looking brother though. My guess is he just made that song to get intergalactic busfare back to whatever planet he came from.

  20. good people of VSB I wish I could click on all the videos Panda man put up or even tune in to the podcast but damn if the limited bandwith on this dag blasted ship would not allow it. Just another way to keep the people down I tell you. I’m rounding 3d and will be sliding into home in 6 days and I am looking forward to a Homecoming and tomfoolery only VSB can supply (since I missed the NY gathering and BBQ)

  21. Maaannnn…”One good reason” by Dru Hill (Enter the Dru) STAYED on rotate when I was exercising one particular relationship out of my soul, lol. I played that song fiddyleven times!!

“I remember in our first days you would never ever leave me alone ,but now it seems here lately babe that you are always gone. So tell me what am I supposed to do should I stay and wait for you.My heart is slowly aching for your love and I don’t know what to do. Give me one good reason I should stay, your love is out of season be on your way..!!

MAN! I sang that song like I wrote it! LOL

Before Rruh was wanting to feel on my booooo-oooty my boo-oo-oo-oo-ty and trying to get me pregnant…he couldn’t sleep without me (I can’t Sleep baby)…not to say it’s unexpected from him…well Back then it wasn’t (sorta, lol)

    • @Smiley Face,

Before Rruh was wanting to feel on my booooo-oooty my boo-oo-oo-oo-ty and trying to get me pregnant…he couldn’t sleep without me (I can’t Sleep baby)…not to say it’s unexpected from him…well Back then it wasn’t (sorta, lol)

can you translate this to american please?

  22. First time, commenter long time lurker…

I always loves that song by Soul 4 Real…myyy love do you ever dream of, candy coated raindrops (bows?). You’re my sweet my candy rain!

  23. I totally agree with “Feel the Funk” I loved that song! I saw Immature live @ Disney World during my Senior Trip, they sucked, also saw the group Silk and they were Nice!

I disagree with the Ray J pick, I loved “Wait a Minute” that is really the only thing I like by him. I also disagree with the Marques Houston Pick, “Circle” was a beautiful song thanx to B. Cox on the Keys. But hey we all have different taste.

  24. It took me a while to think of one, but I was listening to the streaming radio the other day here at work and I heard a new song from All 4 One (?) called “My Child” that was suprisingly good.
First off, I was like dayum…I ain’t even heard them kat’s name since I was in HS, and 2nd of all I couldn’t believe it was a decent song because I hated “I Swear”. That isht was everywhere that year. Homecoming dance, Prom, all over MTV when they used to play actual music…lol You could not escape it.

*oh yeah…the podcast was nice. The theme song had me sniggling.

  25. I can’t believe no one said Christina Milian’s “Dip It Low”… that isht shocked the hell outta me!… then it her album dropped and so did my interest, but she was hot for a second with that one!

  26. Subway ft. 702 “This Little Game We Play”. This is the only song I know of them recording and actually getting some air play…via BET when they actually played videos. But this song goes HARD…and the video is classic 90′s: walking on the bridge, baggy clothes, grinding the air.

Brutha “She’s Gone”. I think I was the only person who brought their album.

I can’t even remember this groups name, but that song “Blackberry Molasses” was tight

      • @Yeah…SO?!,

Thanks! I really could not remember the name of the group. I could see the video clearly in my head and everything…but their name truly escaped me.

        • @La Bakir, Chile don’t thank me thank technology… I forgot their name too.- which is crazy cuz I’m sure one of them impregnated me(not Bobby V-lol) I was in love off of that song… oh well.

          • @Yeah…SO?!, ewwww … “I was SO in love off that song.”… I think I’m just gonna hire someone to type for me- proofing clearly isn’t my strong trait.

          • @Yeah…SO?!,

LMAO!!! I know the feeling girl. At least you were impregnanted by someone who is alive. Let me tell it, Marvin Gaye and I have been dating the past 3 months.

    • @La Bakir,

Blackberry Molasses? That was Mista… which spawned Bobby Valentino or Bobby V, or whatever he goes by now. I think his last album cover looked like an S Curl box.

      • @SouthernCharm,

        LMAO @ S Curl box!!! I can’t!!!

Speaking of Bobby V…I’d like to nominate is “Slow Down” joint to be added to this list.

    • @La Bakir, I think the group that sang Blackberry Molasses was called “Mista” or something like that. That was my song back when I was a youth!

Little piece of trivia…Bobby Valentino was actually the lead singer of Mista back in the day.

      • @AmbitiousBrown, damn…I was late as hell with that one. Gotta refresh the page more often when I’m reading through the comments…

      • @AmbitiousBrown,
“Bobby Valentino was actually the lead singer of Mista back in the day.”

And he looks exactly the same. I don’t think he even got any taller.

      • @Panama Jackson,

Lol, point taken. Hooooowwweeeevvvver…you can be surprised b/c the song was really good and they didn’t follow up with nan’ other song :)

      • @Panama Jackson,
They actually did follow up with another song. It was called “Fire”. They made a video and everything.
Why do I remember that ish? My sister played that ish into the ground. Ugh…lol

  27. Me and my friends call these songs/artists guilty pleasures.

M.C. Breed – Ain’t No Future In Your Frontin
    M.C. Breed f/ 2Pac – I Gotta Get Mine

Tear Da Club Up Thugs feat. Hot Boys & Big Tymers – Playa Why You Hatin (Hypnotize / Cash Money)

    Jahiem – Fabulous
Jahiem – Lil Ninja Ain’t Mine

    Paul Wall – Sittin Sideways
Paul is terrible but this song is good. I’m still mad I bought his CD.

Brandy f. Kanye West – Talk About Our Love
More than likely it’s Kanye’s beat that makes the song but I still like it.

      • @Yeah…SO?!, she so doesn’t…and i actually HATED “talk about our love”

every now and then folks picked less than stellar kanye beats.

i think she would have been much better had she had keyshia cole’s “i changed my mind”

that shit was a brandy song WAITING to happen.

truth be told, and i dont think anybody’s ever delved into this, but keyshia cole used to sound a whole lot like Brandy if Brandy had been smoking a lot of weed and sippin’ on that ‘yac.

        • @Panama Jackson, “I changed my mind”?- ewwww… P- I expect better from you… I’m not sayin it don’t be knockin cuz I got that isht in the whip rite now- but Brandy/Moesha- HELL TO DA NO!… that isht too grimy for her maybe a “Love” would have been well suited tho… I can hear her killin that isht right now- *dead*.

    • Beautiful-Reuben Studdard

I Still Love You-702 (not like 702 was horrible, but I was suprised this was their song)

      Turn The Lights Off-Tweet

Sponsor-Teairra Marie (the subject matter doesn’t represent the type of woman I am, but it’s a good song)

Lovin’ Me 4 Me-Christina Aguilera (I know she can sing and I know she has hits, but that song was a bit more soulful than the usually pop offerings)

  28. Y’all go in on Tiger and his bad roster management but Pleasure P gets a pass?

    Shame on you Panama.

That Pleasure P joint does bang though, It’s definitely a guilty pleasure of mine. Here’s my list:

“Classical” by Gucci Mane – it’s produced by Drumma Boy, give it a chance.

“Playaz Rock” by Hurricane Chris – Tiger should have heard that song and read this manual: http://carverthegreat.wordpress.com/2009/12/09/its-just-a-friendly-game-of-baseball/

  29. Wow… I only came on this page to leave a comment because I thought you weren’t going to give the necessary props to Tyrese “What Am I Gonna Do.” That song is in my Top 20 Best Love Songs Ever List.

But back to your list. Ray J could make the songs to save all souls and I wouldn’t give it the time of day.

    I looooooved Feel the Funk…
Someone up top put Jesse Powells You on…

I need to add Kenny Lattimore “For You”

And I’m gonna take it back 100 years with
Tony Terry “When I’m With You”
Tony Rich Project “No Body Knows it But me”
    Rome “I Belong to You”
    Az Yet “Last Night”

OOOO There are a lot of classics one hit wonders… I know I strayed from the premise of this list.. but I just can’t list to a lot of nonsense that is released nowadays. My mentality is “If Hot 97 (insert your version of this radio station) will play it, I will not. “

    • @JumpOnIt,
U ain’t never lied about that Tony Terry, Az YET, Rome and Tony Rich! U can keep them on repeat for a nice smooth night with your boostank!

I was drunk as a skunk last week grinding with my boo in a seedy bar to Az Yet Last Night, that there song got the party started.

    • @JumpOnIt,
      Rome “I Belong to You”

12 or so years later my Rome cd still get heavy play in the ride…lol

      • @miss t-lee,

Yeah that went hard. I was bumping that along with the SWV (a solid album) and Changing Faces (where are they now??).

          • @Panama Jackson,

You know that “Use Your Heart” by SWV was an early beat by the Neptunes? I already loved that song, but when I found out, I loved it even more because it sounded nothing they after that.

    • @JumpOnIt,

LOL…Tellin’ ur age with those selections…Rome and Tony Rich were THE FIRST ppl I thought of naming on this list…

Then you threw in AZ Yet to top it off….lawd, lawd, lawd….

      • @DG,

Lol… “age” is relative.. I am a 25.. but the music I listen to isn’t… it’s just the buffoonery that we have as options now.. keeps the classics playing.

    • @Stustustudious, did y’all hear about how she’s NEVER even heard a Jay song. lol.

she said in an interview she doesnt listen to Jay or Britney. at all.

the songwriters just had those names in the songs so she sang it and wasn’t expecting the song to get released (its a bonus cut). lol.

      she’s a liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiie

  30. Justin Timberlake and Robin Thicke aside, Jon B was my first real taste of blue-eyed soul when I was a youngsta (I’m only 22, don’t jump me).

The other day my Jodeci PlayStation on Pandora (this station goes HARD) played “Are U Still Down” and I was reminded how much I used to loooooooove this man. Don’t ask me who told him it was OK to come out with a Greatest Hits CD, but this song was on there and brought me back to stuffing my training bra during the summer and getting sprayed with the hose by Jean Claude, the Haitian across the street, who today is a bum still chilling in his mother’s house after returning from the army.

    • @Pinks,

“The other day my Jodeci PlayStation on Pandora (this station goes HARD) played “Are U Still Down” and I was reminded how much I used to loooooooove this man. ”

I have the same station on Pandora, and I was just telling a friend how much I miss Jon B. I’m a sucker for blue-eyed soul. I regularly listen to Michael McDonald and Hall & Oates.

      • @Voiceovereason,

While I’m on the blue-eyed soul movement, “Still on my Brain” by JT is my shiiiiiiiiiiiit.

        • @Pinks,

I love that song. JT’s first album was great. I went to an HBCU and everyone was copping that album on campus when it came out.

    • @TrueMan,

in college, i actually wrote about the gone phenomenon the campus newspaper. i forgot exactly what i wrote, but i do remember at least one letter to the editor asking me if i had a soul

  31. Feel the Funk was my mf’in jam! thats all I have to add. I used to be a huuuuge Immature fan.

*my initial post was in moderation and I clearly effed up the song title. my bad.*

  32. Thought of another one. Montell Jordan shocked me with “What’s On Tonight” after “This is How We Do It” and that whack line, “The hoods been good tome ever since I was a lower case G, but now I’m a big G, the girls see I got the money. Hundred dolla bills ya’ll”

      • @ComicBookGuy,

Haha. I luv black folk! Yall know good and well that song was “Get it on Tonight” or smthg!

        I liked it too :)

        • @Me fail english?,
          No…

there were 2 songs by Montell Jordan
          1. What’s On Tonight?
          2. Get it on Tonight

          #1 was a slow jam, #2 was a club jam. :)

        • @Me fail english?,

Naw, I know what song you are talking about but he did have a song called What’s On Tonight that was a good slow jam. Get It On Tonight was the track that had LL on it.

          • @ComicBookGuy,

lol. Well excuse me. Now I gotta check that one out! I liked Montell Jordan from “You must’ve been” to “Ya gotta get ya groooove on” *in Martin Payne voice*

  33. Outro, “Let me come inside”… That ish! and staying in the early 90′s, I’ll rock with H-town “Knockin the boots”

  34. Though he may be a pedophile, one can’t deny Kells’ songwriting talent…here are a couple of gems to remember…

“Ice Cream” by JS….the song was cool, but the video got me…both them girls were crucial.

“Be Careful” by Sparkle….”two years ago/didn’t know u had male friends/wait a minute, let me finish”….classic stuff.

    • @DG,

JS had another song called “Love Angel” that I used to LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE…I heard that they were both in a relationship before Ron Isley got locked up and one of them was even his wife…I gotta stop reading mediatakeout

  35. Here are some I thought about this morning fumbling through my Ipod.

All Alone by Dru Hill – This was off the first album and one of the few songs where you heard all four of them sing a verse.

Heaven Can Wait by Michael Jackson – The Invincible album was not his best work but that is a great song.

Baby By Me by 50 Cent and Ne-Yo – I am not a fan of either one of them, although I could listen to 50 interviews all day, that is a banger. Polow Da Don killed that beat.

Love Affair by Toni Braxton – Loved her first album and this one of my favorites on it.

Please Don’t Go by Immature – This song was a jam, especially the remix by Roger Troutman (R.I.P.)

Get Original by Black Eyed Peas – This song is good and significant because it shows how artists can change (yeah, I got a bone to pick with Will.I.Am.) This song was made when they were a real, underground, backpacking hip hop ground and oddly enough it is about rappers going pop and wouldn’t you know it, BEP ending up going more pop than bubbles at a soda factory.

Homies and Thugs by Scarface – I only listen to this song now because of the 2Pac freestyle at the end.

Stranger in Moscow by Michael Jackson – I get kinda sad when I hear this song because the writing was on the wall for MJ when he wrote this song.

One more for the road: Sniper Elite and Murder Goons by DillaGhostDoom – DOOM and GFK going nuts on a J Dilla beat. Gotta love it.

    • @ComicBookGuy,

Heaven Can Wait by Michael Jackson – The Invincible album was not his best work but that is a great song.

i think this is one of the best love songs ever. like, top 3 or 4.

    • @ComicBookGuy, Wait a minute… some of these artists are actually good. I thought we were only talking bout bad artists… MJ really? Now DillaGhostDoom ok- I don’t even know who dat is.

      • @Yeah…SO?!,

I know what you mean but it seems like a lot of folks went off on the tangent of low key songs by good artists and/or guilty pleasures, at least I did. There aren’t a lot of good songs by bad artists that I like, mainly because if you are a bad/gimmicky artist, I am probably not going to listen to you.

          • @Yeah…SO?!,

            Thanks. lol

I would never say MJ is a bad artist. That’s blasphemy.

BTW, DillaGhostDoom is a collabo between rappers MF DOOM and Ghostface Killah over beats by J Dilla (R.I.P.).

          • @Yeah…SO?!, Hmmm… Ghostface you say? You may have turned me on to sumthin new my friend… 1 cuchi coupon for you!- expires in awww times up – lol

          • @Yeah…SO?!,

Hopefully in my lifetime, MF DOOM and Starks will finally put out that collabo album. DOOM produced a few tracks on the Fishscale album and Ghost has guested on a few DOOM tracks.

        • @ComicBookGuy,

I hear you. That’s kind of how my list went (even though I put it in the wrong place). It wasn’t necessaarily bad artists, but songs that made you think “I didn’t expect this song from that artist and I’m surprised I like this!”

        • @ComicBookGuy,

Pretty much. If we stuck to bad artists making good music the thread would be like 3 posts long.

        • @ComicBookGuy, Awww sweetheart… I think you can hang that up. I don’t foresee an album, let alone a mixtape coming out from them dudes.

    • @ComicBookGuy,

Black Eyed Peas – This song is good and significant because it shows how artists can change (yeah, I got a bone to pick with Will.I.Am.) This song was made when they were a real, underground, backpacking hip hop ground and oddly enough it is about rappers going pop and wouldn’t you know it, BEP ending up going more pop than bubbles at a soda factory.

These dudes were always too soft for me. Even though I am a so-called backpacker groups like them and Blackalicous where just too soft.

      • @Humble_One, whoa now…

how is Blackalicious too soft? Gift of Gab is probably one of the best MCs nobody ever heard of.

BEP, now…sure…but in the Behind The Front days? they were raw uncut dope.

you must think Kanye is a straight p*ssy then.

        • @Panama Jackson,

Behind the Front and Bridging the Gap were two great albums. I bet 60% of their fanbase now knows nothing about those albums.

    • @Dorian G.,

Co-sign…I think some VSB and VSS are missing the point of this post. This is for artists that you WOULDN’T expect to make a good song…a best song of the worst artist list, in other words.

Artists such as Anthony Hamilton, MJ, Tyrese, 2Pac, Dilla….shouldn’t be mentioned at all.

    • @Dorian G., yeah, i admit Tyrese was a stretch, but I just felt like putting that video up b/c I love that song and hadn’t heard it in a while.

plus, he became Black Ty which nearly negated everything he’s ever done.

  36. although i know this is going to be at least 104% gay, the one song that came to mind when thinking about this topic is “let me hold you” by bow wow and omarion. i just…really like that song.

even though i’m a nas fan, i’d also count “just a moment”, the song featuring quan, because that was more of a quan song than a nas song, and quan, ummmm, sucks.

    • @The Champ,

“Although know this is going to be at least 104% gay, the one song that came to mind when thinking about this topic is “let me hold you” by bow wow and omarion. i just…really like that song. ”

Maybe not 104%…perhaps 58%. I like the song too, mainly because it samples an L.Vandross cut…so that’s my disclaimer.

On second thought, maybe 104% is pretty accurate…

    • @The Champ,

I liked the song too. It was somewhat of a guilty pleasure as I was around 22 at the time and was in love w/ Omarion who probably comes up to my hip (I’m 5’8).

    • @The Champ, yeah, that joint is all the way gay.

and speaking of Nas…seems like he needs to get onto some more Quan songs. at least that shit had a video.

      he’s gonna need some money.

      51k. C’MON SON. GTFOHWTBS.

  37. “let me hold you” by bow wow and omarion. i just…really like that song.

Are you on a mission to get your Wu-Tang card revoked?

  38. I thought of one more that I’m jamming as we speak.

    Teairra Mari~Make Her Feel Good

Anything else she’s put out since then is hot garbage, but this one always knocked. I think it’s the beat with the Rakim sample, or the remix -IDK, I have no explanation…lmao

  39. Not like these artists are wack, but this songs surprised me…I re[osted some of this because i put it in the wrong place. Sorry!

    Beautiful-Reuben Studdard

I Still Love You-702 (not like 702 was horrible, but I was suprised this was their song)

    Turn The Lights Off-Tweet

Sponsor-Teairra Marie (the subject matter doesn’t represent the type of woman I am, but it’s a good song)

Lovin’ Me 4 Me-Christina Aguilera (I know she can sing and I know she has hits, but that song was a bit more soulful than the usually pop offerings)

Wanna Love You Girl-Robin Thicke… this is not his best song, but i like it, lol!

Beautiful-Musiq Soulchild, I just didn’t expect this song from him. I’m so used to his songs using friendship to get to the honey pot, which annoyed the heyall outta me, but I have discovered more songs of his I really like.

  40. …so yea. I’m going to have to cosign this post. Especially because I like that Pleasure He P song…

I still think its suspect for a dude to have a grind off competition between other dudes. But still.

And I’m going to have to remove Tyrese as a bad artist. Um, dude can sing. Now it would be different if you posted him rapping a “good song” (as Black Ty of course…but that’s his drunken ego).

To add to the list…um…T-Pain: Buy You a Drank (d*mn you David Sides!!!)***

***Note: You cannot judge me for liking that song!!!

  41. Let me just say that this is my first time post, but I’ve been a “lurker” lol since the summer when a friend put me on… and i have to say that I can always count on this blog for entertainment when bored at work or need a good laugh… but enough of the mushyness

Solange Knowles – “Dancin in the Dark” at times Solange seems more soulish than B on her cd (it was $7 at walmart and worth every penny, but I would’ve paid $10)

    Tatyana Ali – Daydreamin

Keite Young – “If We Were Alone” – This song is so sexy it gives me goose bumps when I heard it (not a bad artist, but an unknown)

Lord Tariq & Peter Gunz – “Deja Vu” old, but classic 98 hip-hop track that was fire (well at least to me)

And umm… Kelly Rowland ft. Eve – Bump Like This (I love her but her R&B career is not the business thanks to Matthew Knowles)

        • @xave,
I did not like Solange at first until i heard the song the stillness is the move. You should listen to that one. The original is from the dirty projectors..its nice.

    • @Ashlove,
“Solange Knowles – “Dancin in the Dark” at times Solange seems more soulish than B on her cd (it was $7 at walmart and worth every penny, but I would’ve paid $10)”

True…I bought my cd on half.com for $1.75.
Some of the best money I’ve spent all year…lol
I loved the whole cd up until that kut with her and Bilal *eyeroll*

    • @legitimate_soul, That’s a good one! Under the theme of obscure, do you remember Ideal? They were the knockoff version of Dru Hill. Had a song called “get out”, good song but who would sign up to be a fake Sisqo? Really?

      • @xave,

I remember their name, but not their songs. You had me Google and Amazon searching like a mug, lol!

      • @xave,
I remember Ideal, and really only because of the song “Whatever” and that they were from Houston.

  42. Where is Billy Ocean? He was supposed to be the Michael Jackson Killer in the 80′s. “Caribbean Queen”! i’m only 26 but that joint was fire!

    • On the least expect element of this thread, I never expected to love some German soul music. Joy Denalane be killin’ it (even in German)! Most of the stuff I peeped I enjoyed, and by no means is she wack or a one hit wonder, but I just didn’t see it coming. I know we are everywhere and soul music is not only confined to the U.S. shores, but Germany? :

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-rrGHRG5hU&feature=channel

      • @Panama Jackson, My man Billy was representing for us dark skin brothas before Eddy Murphy and Wesely Snipes. Plus he was a no dancing a$$ dude from Trinidad, making him an even bigger anomaly in the 80s.

  43. Listening to the VSB podcast. The intro song literally made me lol. Champ, I can hear the “Pittsburgh” in your voice.

  44. UNDER IS THE ANTI-PANTY SOAKER…WHENEVER I SEE THE VIDEO AND SHE DIVES INTO TEH GROUND IT MAKES MY NOSE CRINKLE

    • @cam1ll3,

“you say he’s using friendship to get to the honey pot like that’s a bad thing…”

^It is. I confuses things and blurs lines and can lead to a lot of mixed signals. Folks trying to sit and crack the code, when one can simply speak up and make their intentions known. At some point, I want a man who will let me know with no ambiguity if he is interested in getting to know me or otherwise. But that friendship bit, when somebody really thinks you are just friends can lead to some hurt feelings. I’m not talking about folks who really were friends and it lead to more, or people who want a relationship and were friends first. I mean people who went into a friendship with an ulterior motive .

  45. Random question… Does anyone remember what episode it was of Living Single when Overton was like, “Oh, what a tangled web I have weaved… Woven?”

    *cough*

Anywho… I would put Ashanti’s whole first CD on this list. Production/writing was kinda crazy. Even makes me forget that time she was performing on the (Whatever-They-Were) Awards and got water all in her eyes while she was tryna be sexy. Well, almost. Bwahahahaha.

  46. Amerie’s still a banger (looks-wise) and she should stick to her looks and that high caliber education she’s tootin’, but that “Nothing Like Loving You” off her first album is golden to me. Also, anyone remember that lil’ boy group, ATL? “Let Me Make It Up with Love” goes ALL the way for me! And that one-hit group with that song “Emotional” from last year gets me everydamntime. Who knows who they are. Lastly…where’s K’Jon? He came outta nowhere and got everyone waiting for their very own to’ up canoe to come from some other shore, and we haven’t heard from him since!

  47. def agree with the pleasure p track. still am surprised to this day. good pick.

btw. great blog. keep up the good work. kudos!
