2014 BET Hip-Hop Awards Recap

In keeping with the stereotype that Black folks are always late, BET aired the 2014 Hip-Hop Awards last night something like three weeks after it filmed in Atlanta. Why? My guess is because there’s usually a fight or twelve at the hip-hop awards and BET wanted the ability to edit it out, ya know, just in case. Can’t say I blame them. I guess.

Anyway, I’m going to have to revisit my tweets to figure out what happened because I actually can’t remember it at all. That’s not completely true. I remember a few things. Let’s dive in and see where this goes.

  • There was at least one highlight of the night in the “I Wanna Be Down (Remix)” reunion where Brandy came out lookin’ like everything I’ve ever wanted in a boo, then MC Lyte came out and looked like the baddest woman in the land who hasn’t aged in 20 years. She’s so hot. Yo-Yo and Queen Latifah did their thing. Point is, this song came out almost 20 years ago. That is amazing.
  • Speaking of old niggas being amazing, Doug E. Fresh won a lifetime achievement award and he and Snoop performed “Lodi Dodi” off of Doggystyle, a song that came out at least 20 years ago.
  • Snoop was the host. This is either a good thing or a bad thing. Turns out it was both. As a host, he’s pretty unremarkable. However, as a personality on stage who dances and sings everybody’s song with them? He was golden. Remember how Jill Scott was living her life like she was golden? Same thing.
  • That reminds me, though, how terrible Snoop is at Instagram. I follow him because I hate myself mostly. He has more random ass pictures that are clearly accidents that he decided to post anyway. Foot? Yep. Random ass blurry photo of an exit sign? Yep. Sprinkled amidst the pictures of his children, wife, and large catalog of self-appointed and monogrammed paraphernalia, are random ass shots of “why did I take this picture but I should post it anyway.”
  • One of the main reasons I watched this awards show aside from Tweeting with the Black populace was because I saw that Young Thug was going to be performing live a few times (once with Rich Gang compatriot, Rich Homie Quan who accepted an award with no shirt on and once with T.I. performing “About The Money”). I wanted to see how unintelligible he was live. Pretty darn, as it turns out. You know how folks try to sing along wtih songs all the time that they know and love? Not one damn person could sing along with”Lifestyle”. Folks were just swaying back and forth. Even Future, the godfather of this unintelligible shit couldn’t sing along. It looked like a church full of Black people humming along to the 2nd and 3rd verses of “Lift Ev’ry Voice And Sing”.
  • Wiz Khalifa’s Taylor Gang cypher was as bad as you think it would be. Wiz Khalifa isn’t really the best rapper on the planet but he knows how to make a hit. Now imagine a crew of people worse than Wiz Khalifa who also can’t make a hit. Then picture Wiz Khalifa’s 6’something” ass wearing what looked like white jeggings and an over-sized hoodie. He looked like a really cold woman. And THAT was the most interesting part of the Taylor Gang cypher.
  • Common, Vincent Staples, and Jay Electronica did the song “Kingdom” off Com’s last album whose name I forget because nobody remembers it. Jay Electronica showed up and continued to troll his fans since everybody knows we’re never getting a Jay Electronica album. But here he goes anyway with his random hot verse tease.
  • Migos came out looking like a lot of bad fashion decisions. I have no idea their individual names, but one Migo had on what looked like a paisley jumper. It might have been two pieces but looked like a big ass onesie. Don’t wear onesies on stage, yo. Just don’t do it.

I’m struggling right here. Seriously. I’ve got the amnesia Kevin Hart has in this season opener of Real Husbands of Hollywood.

  • I can barely remember any awards. In fact, I’m guessing they aired maybe 3 or 4.
  • Bobby Shmurda closed out the show with the song “Hot Nigga”. It was not an impressive performance but literally every single person in the audience was waiting for this song to come on. I love that song despite it being one of the most violent songs in the history of ever. But still, Free Meeshie, ho.
  • The only cypher that stood out to me was the live cypher done towards the end of the show and that’s only because Murda Mook tore the stage down. He took shots at Drake. That was fun. I don’t keep up with the beefs like I used to so I’m sure somebody knows why they were beefing. Not I said the Panama.
  • One highlight was Remy Ma and Papoose being on a cypher and doing a verse together. Now, I know many of you love Remy Ma. I’m not one of you. I like Papoose even less. But hey, Black love and shit.

Aight, that’s all I have. Literally. I know many of you watched the awards. What were your highlights?

Panama Jackson

Panama Jackson is pretty fly (and gorgeous) for a light guy. He used to ship his frito to Tito in the District, but shipping prices increased so he moved there to save money. He refuses to eat cocaine chicken. When he's not saving humanity with his words or making music with his mouth, you can find him at your mama's mama's house drinking her fine liquors. Most importantly, he believes the children are our future. You can hit him on his hitter at panamadjackson@gmail.com.

  • I’m just really out of touch with hip hop. I didn’t know any of the songs or music that’s current outside of Move That Dope. By time I’m 30 it’s unlikely hip hop will even be in the top 5 most listened to genres in my library.

    • Besides, hating on hip-hop is a good way to get intellectually minded natural hair sisters who meditate on intellectual bullshit they can get away with because they’re living off the Bank of Mommy and Daddy deep thoughts. :)

      • Naw, I’ll always love hip hop past present and future. If this is an indication of who’ll be caring the culture for the next five years than I’m going to be listening to less. Instead of 50+ albums and mixtapes a year I’ll probably only listen to like 20.

        • Val

50+? Wow, you need to monetize all that listening. If you aren’t already doing so.

          • panamajackson

Music heads are on that same wavelength. Back when folks were buying CD’s, I’m sure i was buying 100s a year. I download and listen to at least one new album every week. At least.

            • Val

Now see, here I was thinking I am a semi-music head becasue I discover 3 or 4 new songs a month. Obviously I’m nowhere near being a music head. Even back in the day I was only really feeling maybe one new cd per month. You guys are in another league.

              • panamajackson

As cliche as this will sound, I need new music to breathe. It energizes me.

                • RewindingtonMaximus

It’s hard to keep up with new music though. If it wasn’t for the My Mixtapez app on my phone, I sincerely forget new mixtapes come out like every day. I went from not downloading music for 3 months to having all the latest stuff taking up all the space on my phone, but I still don’t know anything about the music on the radio.

                  • You just gotta regularly read music blogs and check up on labels and you’ll find like 10 people each week.

                    • RewindingtonMaximus

I’m trying to now, it just used to feel like a lot of work earlier, but I want to keep finding new acts and vibing out to good stuff

                • who you listening to these days?

              • Paradigm

What folks describing is exactly why the music game is watered down.. Ayebody wanna be an artist now and anybody can put out music even if its trash.. I like the originality that comes w/ the true artists

            • h.h.h.

i used to be like this REALLLL Heavy in college. i still think Drag-On’s first album was worth it to buy.

since i kinda do gigs/events, i still need the new tunes so i have my avenues, but i do my best to still buy. i’m probably down to 1-2 albums a month.

nowadays anything i see, i send it to my amazon wishlist. i should probably start buying from there now.

          • It’s an extremely slow week if I don’t learn of and listen to at least 4 new acts a week.

    • Just go underground (or internet) bro. Check out Mick Jenkins.

  • Paradigm

The highlight was this review so I could go straight to youtube instead of sittin’ through full BET hip hop awards.. I fool w/ the battle culture so it was good to see them represent.. Tryna figure how they decide to let Calicoe on stage over Lux tho.. Ars did his thing too.. I thnk Surf flopped in his cypher but just as a sidebar he 2-1 over Hitman clearly/no debatin’.. Wanna see him battle Tay Rock tho.. Hoping Smack release the footage of the rest of those SM4 battles asap tho..

*Realizes this is wrong classroom.. Slowly backpedals out of classroom*

    • No stay…sit. School us. :)

      • Meridian

Word. I don’t really bother to keep up with battle rap culture but last night was eye opening. I’m interested. *gossips until the teacher comes back*

      • Paradigm

The guys that battle represent a certain brand of performer and put on a show w/ a level of hoodness involved.. The battlers themselves are like WWF so folks tend to ride w/ whoever they ride w/ based on what you like (Bars, Performance, Delivery, Aggression, etc).. The utter level of disrespect in the delivery of bars against one’s opponent is paramount to gaining crowd/viewer support during said performance..

The best league is Smack/URL followed by UW Battle League but it kinda drops off after that unless you’re white and then you’d probably trend towards KOTD or GrindTime (Just Trust Me) and don’t forget Queen of the Ring Battle League hosted by Babs (The Band), Vague and Deebo.. Some of the ladies got flow such as 40Barrs altho she got murdered by Jaz Tha Rapper (I’ll discuss the homicidal nature of battle rap at a later time)..

The battle style used now is not what you may have used on the bus, in the cafeteria, or in locker rooms during our era.. It’s expected that each battler will “prepare” rounds for their opponent which will consist of gun bars, drug and gang references, personal attacks on opponents character, etc..

Now back to the WWF.. The names of the battle rappers gives them that super hero feel (ex. Tsunami Surf, Loaded Lux, K-Shine, O-Red, Tay Rock, Charlie Clips, DNA to name a few).. Then you got dudes like Aye Verb who be havin’ super moves which adds to the entertainment value.. So I just set you up w/ the introduction into the culture now I’m gonna leave it to you to do ya’ research

Here’s a solid battle blogger Jayblac1615 who does reviews/reactions of battles giving his take on how battle rappers be which is pretty accurate..

Have a good day class *collects apples from students*

    • ima definitely have to play Lux’s verse back. I think Calicoe was appropriate for the stage cuz his lyrics were straightforward. From the antics on stage you know ninjas wouldn’t be listening close enough to understand Lux.

      • Paradigm

I think we’re on the same page.. To bring this full circle and according to Lux they put a “lost ninja” (Calicoe) on stage for “lost ninjas” performing and in attendance

    • SuperStrings

I used to try and stay up on this . Would be interested to know what the game looks like these days.

      • Paradigm

Its def not what it was but it’s not bad IF you take it for what it is.. Entertainment.. And some of the guys have flipped it into legit hustles which we gotta applaud (The BET Ultimate Freestyle Friday Contract.. Conceited/Hitman being regulars on Wild’N Out) Heck Kevin Durant was even on stage at SM3.. Puffy bet 10k during battle.. QTip and others showed love and Jay Z was tweetin’ after that Lux bodybag.. It’s good for what it is all day

    • panamajackson

You’re all good with me. Plus Damon loves all those battles videos. Me, not so much.

      • Paradigm

True indeed.. BTW I was gonna fall back on Dame after that television list fiasco but this statement “Damon loves all those battles videos” has absolved him

    • Kim

#Throwback I haven’t wactched smacked since Highschool except that Calicoe vs Loaded Lux battle, that was crazy!!

      • Paradigm

Yeah those Smack dvds was video mixtapes… The only thing that dropped during high school that had as big an impact on some non-mainstream ish’ was that And-1 mixtape volume one

  • One of my personal favorite highlights was Teyana Taylor. That woman is beautiful.

    • panamajackson

      She really is.

      • Sigma_Since 93

What has she done other than look chexy??? How has she maintained her 2 seconds of fame???

        • panamajackson

She can just look sexxy for me. And hey, she’s all over MBDTF. She’s alright with me.

          • Sigma_Since 93

            MBDTF??

            I can’t keep up

            • panamajackson

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Kanye brought her in to do backing vocals on the album. She’s listed in the liner notes and erything.

              • Man she could eat studio and session work for real. Maybe she don’t want the mega shine. Maybe she just want a lil shimmer.

              • PivotTable

I remember I went to Kanye’s Glow in the Dark tour and she was on stage during both NERD’s set and Jay-Z’s set.

            • yo you are REALLY showing your age today….youre the grumpy uncle on the porch wondering why the kids wont turn down that racket coming from their cassette players

              • Sigma_Since 93

It’s always been my goal to be the grumpy old man in my neighborhood.. real talk.

        • Val

I think it’s because she has true talent and many people assume that when and if she finds the right situation she’s going to blow up. Also, she hangs with successful people.

          • Sigma_Since 93

Lots of folks have talent. Who’s her sponsor (see what I did there)??? I know they are looking for a return on investment. I really don’t see a Puffy type out there keeping her fed.

Could Teyana Taylor and Jay Electronica be one in the same??? Talented individuals with no album(s) to speak of.

            • Val

Well, as for the fed part, I think she comes from money. Plus she has ‘hustles’. And, she had a semi-hit a while back called, “Go0gle Me”.

            • panamajackson

Naw. Nobody wants a Teyana Taylor album. People have been waiting for a Jay Elec album since 2009. I feel like JE’s album was finished years ago he just never put it out. Just Blaze said it was done in like 2011.

              • Sigma_Since 93

I love / hate the Boondocks for introducing me to Jay. The promo they had using Exhibit C was everything.

              • actuallllyyyy, she posted lil snippets of songs and EYE think her album would be great….based on her song on Cruel Summer with John Legend and what she posts on IG, I’m actually a lil intrigued to see a project from her

                • Sigma_Since 93

                  “what she posts on IG”

So you and Val are starting to hang out…………

                  • que?

                    • Sigma_Since 93

Bunni Love I don’t want your Tumblr page, with its lush home decor pictures and BAE pictures to turn into @disqus_QGKOTi1oX5:disqus IG page.

                    • Val

Why are you trying to scandalize my name, man?! First, I do not have an IG page. Second, like I keep telling you my tumblr is as tame as a newborn kitten.

                    • Sigma_Since 93

I meant to say Tumblr. I will make the necessary edits.

                    • I cant have you slandering my boo Val outchea!!!

                    • Sigma_Since 93

I love my wingwoman @disqus_QGKOTi1oX5:disqus despite the fact I need to convert to Catholicism and say 90 Hail Marys and 200 Our Father’s after looking at her Tumblr lol!!

          • God Shammgod

Is she really talented though? Like her body is bad and I know she can dance, but music wise?

The shadiest thing that Kanye West ever did was put her in a duet with John Legend on the Cruel Summer album. Teyana has the vocal range of DJ Mustards keyboard notes.

            • She got a bit of talent. She got the swag, as long as it’s on a leash. With the right writers and producers i think she could be halfway legit.

              • LadyIbaka

What is her talent? Having beautiful luscious hair?!???

            • Val

I’ve heard her sing acapella and was impressed.

          • PivotTable

“Also, she hangs with successful people.”

More emphasis on that. Lots of talented people out there. She’s smart.

        • She’s a club promoter. She was in a neck brace a couple weeks back and still showed up.

          • Sigma_Since 93

So I’m expected to pay $25-35 to get in a club only to see the hem of her garment??? Oh hell naw!!!

          • Sigma_Since 93

MODERATION??? All I said was Hades

      • She got a really good nose job.

        • Val

Did she really? I’ve seen pics of her where it just looks like contouring but everyone keeps saying she got a nose job. I hope she didn’t.

  • camilleblu

brandy, lyte, yo-yo, & big teef stepped on stage and performed a 20 year old song flawlessly. their performance put those new school rappers to all the shame. oh, and treach was looking as mean and chexy as ever. t.i. looked crazy on stage – he was way too amped. i thought it was funny to have mimi on stage but not nikko – but that’s prolly cuz everybody knows nikko is l’douche extraordinaire. BET told nikko that he can’t sit with them. it would have been epic if they would have cut to joseline’s face #doe. i loved doug e.’s speech and performance. old school hip hop will always be #1 in my heart. i really wanted wiz to take off my daughters leggings. oh, and it’s too bad paw-paw & remy couldn’t edit their verse, cuz NOAP on nick and mariah & wiz and amber.

    • “it’s too bad paw-paw & remy couldn’t edit their verse, cuz NOAP on nick and mariah & wiz and amber.”

      Freestyle my azz lol

  • Don’t understand the TI shade he actually performed his song rather than aimlessly standing and walking back and forth on the stage. That’s why most rap concerts are trash.

    • camilleblu

      just seemed *off* to me

    • panamajackson

I had no problem with TI doing this thing. But I think he tried to overhype a song that’s too chill for it. The BPM’s on that thing got to be in the 70s.

      • he seemed skittish like he took too many puffs on his albuterol inhaler….just tweakin with no place to go

        • camilleblu

lol, right…it was like he had all this extra energy and couldn’t figure out what to do with it…and maybe kept forgetting that the audience was there.

      • Jay

If you really pay attention Tip has a long history of this. Since the “I’m Serious” days I remember watching his videos like “whaa… what is he doing? Why so hype? The song don’t even call for it…”

    • Sigma_Since 93

His show (which is funny) undermines his rap persona => shade

  • SuperStrings

Brandy and company could all get it last night. Aged like a good port. Also, I never liked Remy Ma. I rocks with Rah Digga though.

    • Guest

His show (which is funny) undermines his rap persona => shade

      wrong spot

    • Val

      +1 on Rah Digga

    • RewindingtonMaximus

Beat that bish with a bat.

  • Things I know from what I saw of the BET Hip Hop gathering:

    1. I’m old and I’m cool with that.

    2. Never been a Remy or a Papoose fan but that was cute. I wasn’t dope though.

    3. The Migos are collectively everyone’s tacky cousins who show out at the family reunion. Even your short set wearing drunk uncles shake their heads.

    4. The Murder Mook cypher was dope but I don’t know who he is.

    5. Don’t wear leggings fellas. “Then picture Wiz Khalifa’s 6?tall” ass wearing what looked like white jeggings and an over-sized hoodie. He looked like a really cold woman.” He looked like a really cold woman who was going to ask you for money…for some crack.

  • BreezyX2

Mehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! I wasn’t overly impressed with the Brady performance. The ladies do look great tho. But to me it was missing something…idunno maybe a hype man?!? Anyways outside of that the show was a waste of time. Every time I think BET can’t do anymore to disappointment me they do.

S/N: PeeJ I don’t know how hard you follow Ray J Da Gawd but didn’t he and Princess break up? But I am pretty sure I peeped her next to him last night…or was that T-Murda? Also that preview for the Nelly show…..whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy?!?

    • panamajackson

That was definitely not TMurda next to him. I couldn’t remember his girl’s name either but yeah, Princess. I have no clue if that was her. His chicks look surprisingly interchangeable.

    • Jay

Anyways outside of that the show was a waste of time. Every time I think BET can’t do anymore to disappointment me they do.

I legit felt guilty after watching. Like I should find a way to punish myself for that epic waste of my precious time.

      • BreezyX2

BOL! Right!?! Also watching Snoop dance in his wife beater made me feel some type of way.

  • Sigma_Since 93

Dang I didn’t even know the show was on….. Wouldn’t have watched if I knew.

  • I found out it was coming on like 15min before it came on. It was terrible. The only reason I ever watch that show is for the cyphers, and this year it was Mehville, USA. David Banner’s freestyle made me uncomfortable and angry and turned on at the same damb time. I think I’m diggin his Frederick Douglass swag. MC Lyte shall be the emcee at my wedding….and I shall be marrying Queen Latifah….whew. Thats all.

    • panamajackson

Good luck with all that. lol
